SLP 32: Self Love Quicky – 8 Tips For Better Concentrating
Thursday Dec 17, 2020
Thursday Dec 17, 2020
In this week’s podcast, we talk all things concentration without the brain fog. Here are 8 top tips for keeping clear and focused and able to achieve more naturally and with ease.
8 Things You Ought To Know About Concentrating Without Brain Fog
Do you ever find it hard to concentrate? Feel like you have a constant brain fog or fuzziness? Or do you find yourself easily distracted from the task at hand? And notice how easy it is to be distracted when you really do not want to do the task!
Concentration is said to truly drive intelligence. It is not memory but more the person’s ability to control one’s selective attention. So how do we become more selective? And what happens to the brain when we need to concentrate?
When you decide you need to get focused and do something your brain will have blood rush to the prefrontal cortex. It is almost like a neurological switchboard that tells the brain to shift its attention and concentrate. The next phase is an electrical impulse in two parts – first there is a search query where the brain searches for the right neurons to do the task and second there is the command where the neuron is told what to do – i.e. focus on writing, reading, listening etc.
If there are a lot of chemicals in the environment, or we are lathered in chemically-laden personal care products, makeup, deodorants, shampoos, body lotions or air fresheners around us we could have a major concentration problem.
Chemicals enter into our blood stream when things are placed on the skin and many cross the blood brain barrier when inhaled. This can create such a load on the detoxifying processes of the body that we are left feeling exhausted, distracted, lethargic or foggy.
Add to that distractions like a Facebook notification, an email, phone call, children, partners, boredom or a particular noise the mind disengages and the focus is lost.
Then, once the distraction is over, or we need to get focused again, in order to get back into a concentrated state the brain has to go through the above steps in this organised manner, which gives less kudos to the idea of being able to multi-task. Perhaps it is more than likely there really is no such thing.
Here are 8 ways to get focused and stay on track.
Work on one thing at a time.
It’s never easy to swap and change or do a multitude of things all at once. In fact it has been proven that the more you are in that scattered state the less you achieve and the more frustration can occur. So, put simply focus on one thing at a time. Write a list if that helps and then one by one get through the list. The more we switch our attention and focus the harder the brain has to work.
Eliminate distractions.
If you need to get work done turn off technology notifications. You know it too well. It’s addictive. The minute we hear a tweet, Facebook notification, email or text it is so easy to lose our attention and turn our focus elsewhere. The reality, as mentioned above, is incredibly taxing on the brain and can cause more stress and take tasks even longer.
Eliminate toxins and spritz with essential oils.
Get rid of anything in your home that is a chemical concoction. If you use the synthetic fragranced air fresheners or plug-ins you are really taxing your hormonal and detoxification systems. Check all ingredients in your bathroom and laundry cupboards. Go as natural as possible. There are so many wonderful clean, natural companies with an array of products that will serve you and your family not harm you. This alone may improve your ability to concentrate. Brain fog can lift just by focusing on this one area for many.
The use of essential oils to get focused is phenomenal. These incredible tools are one of the quickest ways to access the brain as they cross the blood brain barrier almost immediately.
Choosing high quality therapeutic grade oils that will stimulate, freshen and activate the mind are powerful. Simply fill a 50ml glass spritzer bottle with water and add 4-6 drops of three oils (or a synergy blend) that are activating like Rosemary, Lemon, Basil, Black Pepper, Lime, Myrtle, Spearmint and Grapefruit.
Our two synergy blends are Focus & Clarity and Energy & Vitality. The act of closing your eyes, taking a deep breath as you spritz will help anchor the mind, get focused and remove brain fog. You can have a vaporiser next to your desk or wherever you are working to help your ability to concentrate too.
De-Clutter.
It is well known the more clutter around you the least effective you are. The same is true if your diary is cluttered, or your kitchen or pantry is cluttered. Clear your desk at least once a week to find your happy place. Complete tasks so you dont feel as though the build up of what needs to be done is clutter. And if you do not complete certain tasks, simply add to your list for the following week. That way the brain knows it is there and will not keep coming up in your mind as a reminder so you don’t forget.
Make lists.
Making lists allows the brain to give it up. It now knows the task is either taken care of or at least acknowledged. When we worry we will forget something or have so much going on in our minds it is hard to remember whether you have completed something or not and this in turn can cause massive stress. Making lists also means you get to tick things off as you accomplish them. The satisfaction in that is huge.
Get moving.
Moving the body creates an energy like no other. The release of dopamine, seratonin and endorphins during exercise gives us a good sense of self, improved energy and an increased state of happiness and joy. It is thanks to exercising that the brain is able to create new neurons to store information more easily.
Get clear.
Know what it is you are trying to achieve or do. Even if you are not sure how that will happen at least give your brain a clear indication of what you are wanting to get done or how you intend to spend your time getting there.
Saying things like this can be helpful ‘I am now writing my assignment and spending the next 90mins focused and attentive to the outcome of at least 1000 words.’ It gives clarity on the task at hand, a goal and an idea of what you want to achieve so you stay focused and on task.
And if for some reason you do not achieve it then hopefully you have allowed time to put into the next block of allocated time so you are not stressed about it either. Simplifying what you need to do allows the brain to stay more focused and gives you a deadline on what you are wanting to achieve.
Train your mind.
Like anything you have to practice to get better. Training the mind is like training a muscle. Whilst we tend to have a plethora of things to focus on each day the brain with all its so-called ‘multi-tasking’ abilities is being trained to not focus. Practice being focused and attentive on one thing at a time and see your productivity increase tenfold.

SLP 31: Primal Reasons For Living Your Purpose with Helen Marshall

“For me, self-love is the same as self-worth, so it’s about valuing yourself enough to take that time to work out what you actually want in your life, in all the different areas of your life. I don’t just mean your career or your family or where you want to end up living. I think it means about looking at all the seven different areas of your life. And just taking that time, you know the amount of time you’d spend booking a vacation right, just spending that amount of time, just sit there and say, ‘Well, what do I actually want in these different areas of my life?’ and then taking the time to really feel what that would look like. And then to work towards that, and to have this kind of overarching purpose or reason for being.” Helen Marshall
Before ditching the rat race, Helen Marshall was a Fitness Instructor and Personal trainer, then a Business Manager for a leading recruitment company in the city. Hailing from the UK Helen knew there was more to life than sitting front and centre of this life so set out on a world adventure. She met her gorgeous hubby Mike who is from NZ and they decided to settle in Australia which was neutral territory.
Helen gets the struggles many face around food and wellness, knowing her own journey created a deep desire to seek answers and not follow the status quo. She discovered her health problems with very closely linked to food, things like dairy, grain and sugar. With this newfound knowledge she said she became a little evangelical in her desire to teach others about these amazing findings but soon realised people didn’t want to give up things like pizza and bread.
So what does someone do when she’s told she can’t? She creates what is needed for all. She started sharing her gut-friendly, healthy alternative recipes which were absolutely loved and people wanted more.
She packaged everything she’d learnt about creating a food business from home whilst on a healing journey, raising a family and designing a lifestyle around the things she loves. The Primalista Licence was born and what is so beautiful is it meets the needs of many people in all areas of their lives: vocational, financial, mental, spiritual, social, physical & familial.
Helen lives on 100 acres of wilderness in Albany, WA with her husband Mike and their children Sam & Milly. She likes pilates, massage, coffee with her bestie, sunbathing, meditation, walks in nature and champagne in the spa. The things she values are fresh air, space, solitude and silence.
In this week’s podcast, we get to share beautiful Helen Marshall’s journey from her early days as a health coach and aerobics instructor to her health crisis. This crisis lead her on a completely different path with a new mindset and created new beginnings which then lead her to creating a massive amazing business called Primal Alternative.
I personally love how Helen shows such grace and grit. If you are ever questioning what your passion and purpose is then listen in to this brave soul, and you will hear her magic.

SLP 30: Self Love Quicky – Natural Healthy Hair Tips
Wednesday Dec 09, 2020
Wednesday Dec 09, 2020
Like the skin, the hair reflects inner health and wellbeing. If you are eating well, getting adequate sleep and feel good about yourself, chances are your hair will show this. Medications, ill health, stress and fatigue can all affect lustrous, healthy hair, leaving it dull, hard to manage and you having a ‘bad hair day!’
Regular visits to the hairdresser can do wonders for your soul! It’s time out and there is nothing nicer than having your hair washed by someone else. But keeping hair healthy does not have to take a lot of time or money. Treatments at home are also effective and beneficial.
Choosing good quality hair care products is one of the first steps to healthy hair. Many shampoos claim to be ‘herbal’ but when you read the list of ingredients, the herbal content is somewhere very near the bottom, meaning there is very little of it in there. So be discerning about what you buy.
Commercial shampoos are basically made with the same formula as carpet shampoos. One of the main ingredients is Sodium Laurel Sulphate, an emulsifying agent, also found in engine degreasers. We have become accustomed to believing that foam and lots of lather is a sign that the product is an excellent cleanser. But this is not the case, all that lather is for our gratification.
If you really like your shampoo regardless of the ingredients, then try diluting it by half with water. You may be impressed to see it cleans just as well, is far more gentle on your hair and has cost you half the price! Detergent-based shampoos can strip the hair of all its natural oil, which is why you often require a conditioner as well. Opt for shampoos free of the more harmful ingredients. There are definitely more natural ones available and once you start using them you may well notice a significant difference. One of my favourites is Everescents.
Try washing your hair less too. Once or twice a week is more than enough. The body creates it’s only nourishing oils to give your hair its shine and luster but if we over wash the hair it can get excessively oily or dry and brittle.
Just remember if you have been using more harsh shampoos and conditioners for a while it may take a few weeks for the hair to adapt to the less chemical ones. As with skin care, allow 28 days for new products to take their effect, and don’t give up on them.
After you have washed and conditioned your hair, a lovely way to finish is with an aromatic hair rinse. These add vitality to your hair and leave a gorgeous light aroma around your head.
Before you hop in the shower or bath to wash your hair, simply fill a 100ml glass bottle with warm water. Add 4 drops total of your chosen essential oils then shake the bottle well.
Just before you hop out of the shower, turn the tap off, squeeze the excess water out of your hair, take your bottle and shake a couple of times, then tilt your head back and allow the aromatic rinse to pour through your hair. Good essential oils to use would be:
Essential oils to make up your own Aromatic Hair Rinse
Dark Hair: 1 drop Geranium, 1 drop Lavender and 2 drops Sandalwood
Light Hair: 2 drops Rosemary, 1 drop Chamomile, 1 drop Lemon
Red Hair: 1 drop Orange, 2 drops Geranium, 1 drop Frankincense
Or you could head to Twenty8 and get our very special Aromatic Siberian Hair Rinse here
To do a Hair Serum Treatment simply take the Moroccan Hair Serum and place onto the scalp in small sections. Cover the whole scalp and then comb through. Leave on for at least 20 mins or put on a shower cap and sleep in it for the whole night.
You can get the Moroccan Hair Serum right here
You will also notice we have a gorgeous Himalayan Beard Serum for our men which you can get here
Hope you enjoy these quick healthy natural hair tips and don’t forget your discount code below.

SLP 29: Rock Bottom Is A Beautiful New Start with Dr Brett Hill
Tuesday Dec 08, 2020
Tuesday Dec 08, 2020
“I think definitely for me, and I think this is true for most if not all people, the first step is definitely that self-love. Because when I tried to fix the problem without having the self-love then that lead to just beating myself up. That lead to a lot of critical analysis of self, self-loathing, self-sabotage, all of those things, because I just wasn’t in a place to come to those solutions from a balanced perspective. And to see the problem from a balanced perspective. And so the first step was definitely that self-love. It was essentially about having the same empathy for myself that I have for others. And that sounds so ridiculous like of course, you would have that, but I didn’t and I think many people don’t. It’s always easier to see someone else’s life and to see their challenges and to see what they’ve overcome and why they’re in the situation they’re in and all of those extenuating factors that lead them to end up where they are. Bit it’s often harder to see that for yourself and we often judge ourselves much more harshly.” Dr Brett Hill
A heartfelt and open conversation about love, life and hitting rock bottom. Dr Brett Hill is a dear friend and someone who went from living a relatively ‘normal’ happy life for his first thirty-five years to all of a sudden faced with being alone, vulnerable, scared and pissed off. A remarkable journey with many ups and downs, clawing his way from the depths of self-sabotage to finally finding his true self and realising he had the resilience, power, tenacity, curiosity and determination to come out the other side a way better human.
Brett talks openly about his desire to take a fairly manly approach and just ‘fix’ his problems but soon realised this big cross-road in his life was not just a quick-fix and he would have to travel some deep and dark roads to truly heal. He also talks about how he feels the legal system is flawed for men.
Brett shares the science behind what the brain does when challenged. And he shares what is needed by those witnessing someone at rock bottom. He gives some go-to strategies on what to do to crawl out of your rock bottom and most importantly how to truly love yourself through the process. And he talks about the importance of being curious, having fun and to believe in miracles!
Dr Brett Hill is the host of some of Australia’s top-rated health podcasts, resilience mentor, functional nutrition coach, chiropractor, public speaker, and author of numerous books and e-books. He regularly appears on TV, radio and in print, and his media appearances, seminars, coaching and consulting have inspired thousands of people over the last decade to live a long, happy, healthy life full of energy and vitality.
A divorced and now remarried father of three with a string of entrepreneurial pursuits and life challenges along the way, Brett brings a unique perspective to health and mindset challenges with his communication skills and emotional vulnerability. He has been able to combine his decades of research into building human health and resilience (including study of Health Science, Nutrition and Counselling) with his own personal journey and lessons to help others rediscover their own innate resilience in a profound way.
Dr Brett has been able to share his journey with his three gorgeous children Tom, Charlotte, and Tim who have inspired Dr Brett to take his message to the world in order to create a healthier environment for his family to thrive in.

SLP 28: The Best Oils For The Festive Season
Thursday Dec 03, 2020
Thursday Dec 03, 2020
If you want to make your home smell special this Christmas then a mixture of pure organic essential oils that could fill the room with aromas of wood, spice and citrus would be the perfect way to go. Essential oils like Frankincense, Myrrh, Pine, Nutmeg, Orange, Sandalwood and Clove are Christmas favourites. They all enhance those special feelings of celebration, connection and good cheer.
Every day I personally use my Diffuser in my home or car. It is something I have done for the past three decades and it is a habit that will continue. You can use a glazed candle ceramic vaporiser as well or simply stick to an electric ultra-sonic Diffuser. Use it in the kitchen, bedroom, and lounge, at dinner parties, in the office, hospital or even at school. In fact, anywhere you want to enhance how people feel – then a Diffuser is perfect! I even travel with one and have a car diffuser too!
Diffusing is simple. You can check them out here, it’s stunning. Fill the unit with water to the correct height. Place 6-8 drops in total of your chosen oils into the water and switch the unit on. If you are using a vaporiser then light a candle at the base of the unit and within a minute your oils will be vaporising into the air affecting everyone who walks into that space. It is not uncommon to have people comment that they ‘smell’ their way to your home when you use essential oils.
One of my favourite annual rituals begins on December 1st. I choose my favourite four festive oils Frankincense, Myrrh, Pine and Orange to make a special Christmas blend and tend to use this combination mainly at this time of year – and for the whole month of December. It is incredible how this blend enhances all those yummy feelings associated with Christmas.
And let’s face it this year has been a bit of a hum-dinger for most. Certainly not the year we thought it would be. So my intention with this particular podcast is that we end the year how we want to end it. Hopefully uplifted, grateful and happy.
What I love about creating festive rituals is that you create aromatic anchors for this special time of year.
You may recall various smells throughout your life that if you smelt today would instantly transport you back to a certain time. This is what I mean with aromatic anchoring – when a smell anchors you to a certain memory or experience. For some it could be the smell of cut grass takes them back to their childhood or school days, for others the smell of a certain perfume or aftershave reminds them of someone. This is particularly interesting if you meet someone new who is wearing the same aroma that someone from your past wore. Depending on how that relationship ended this will have a huge impact on the way you feel the minute you smell it! There are hundreds upon hundreds of aromatic anchors for all of us. Our children always used to comment on Santa and the holidays once they could smell this combination of oils. We anchored that further by reading the Christmas Story or The Night Before Christmas (actually all of our Christmas books) and together we counted down the sleeps to the big day. This aroma created an aromatic anchor for them.
You may recall Frankincense, Myrrh and Gold were the gifts bestowed on Jesus Christ by the three wise men. Well, Frankincense and Myrrh are joined by Pine and Orange to make my special Christmas blend. I sincerely hope you try it, it’s amazing.
Frankincense is an oil that instils tranquillity. Throughout history, it has been used for its spiritual and religious qualities. It will bring courage and strength to all occasions. It is rejuvenating, comforting and fortifying. It is also a mild expectorant and will assist in rejuvenating the skin. It is deeply relaxing.
Myrrh is renowned for promoting endurance and as a support for demanding physical and emotional performance. It has also been considered a most precious oil throughout history. It is inspiring, warming and fortifying. Myrrh is an excellent antiseptic oil that can help strengthen the lungs. It is a great skin tonic, is cooling to wounds and helps create a more positive outlook.
Pine is our wonderful Christmas tree. It is invigorating, refreshing and inspiring. Pine has a stimulating effect on the body and helps to improve oxygen flow and breathing. It is clearing to the mind and helps revive creative forces.
Orange is the oil for celebration and exuberance. It has an energising, refreshing fragrance. Orange enhances communication and helps create more joy and compatibility. In a Diffuser, it is excellent for setting the mood for entertaining. Orange is refreshing, uplifting and enlightening.
You can see then how wonderful these four oils would be in combination and why they are perfect together at this time of year.
You could also go for the delicious Festive Spirit Blend from Twenty8 which contains the gorgeous oils of orange, clove and cinnamon.
Remember the key to aromatherapy is to use high-quality, organic essential oils and use diffusers and vaporisers from a reputable source. A Diffuser and a couple of oils would make a great Christmas present for someone special, maybe even yourself! Of course, it would be remiss of me not to mention including a good reference book ‘Like Chocolate for Women’ and ‘The Art Of Self Love‘ are the perfect reference guides! Not to mention the amazing Aroma Cards that have 50 incredible oil profiles that make it particularly easy to use and learn.
And finally, in the build-up to the big day, I just want to remind you to take special care of YOU. Use your precious oils. And create delicious aromatic anchors for you and your family no matter what their age.
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas…make sure you get that Diffuser going!

SLP 27: Healing From An Eating Disorder with Millie Thomas
Tuesday Dec 01, 2020
Tuesday Dec 01, 2020
“So I wrote about what it was like to actually be in an eating disorder and how it felt. And it resonated with hundreds and hundreds of people in the comments, and then Huffington Post asked to publish it. And then it ended up in a lot of other media as well. It was in that moment that I realised that my story had a lot of power in it. And that I would really, really use it to help others. I knew in that moment that very next day when I woke up and saw how many people had liked it and resonated and commented, I knew that this is what I was going to be doing for the rest of my life. I knew there was a reason that I’d struggled so long and so hard and been told that there was no hope because I can now hand on heart stand here today and say it doesn’t matter how long or how hard you have struggled with an eating disorder for, full recovery is possible. I am living proof of that.” Millie Thomas
This week’s podcast is an incredible story around eating disorders so please be mindful of this and take note of the links for support in the show notes below.
Millie Thomas battled Anorexia Nervosa for 15 years and very nearly lost her life to the illness. She was given up on by her treatment team and told to consider palliative care options.
Her miraculous recovery was a catalyst for a complete career change.
She left her hometown of Auckland, NZ and moved to her ‘happy place’ – the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, where she became determined to use her lived experience to help bring eating disorders out of the shadows and into the light.
She dedicates her time to eating disorder advocacy and eating disorder recovery coaching. She helps clients around the world to gain freedom from their eating disorders and reclaim their lives.
In addition to her private practice, she works with Sunshine Coast-based charity endED where she has been involved in numerous projects including the establishment of Australia’s first residential Eating Disorders facility ‘Wandi Nerida’.
This podcast is Millie’s remarkable story and my wish in sharing it is that anyone who is in the throes of an eating disorder or knows someone who is that you will hear Millie’s words and realise there is hope, there is a chance that life can be turned around and you can indeed make a full recovery.
We talk about the lengths Millie’s family went to, to support her through this illness, the different therapies and the approaches they took and the session that changed Millie’s life forever.
She talks about groundbreaking research into epigenetics and the pathway to healing. We dive into the role of the caregiver, where to turn to for support and how you do not have to travel this path alone.
Some of the questions that stick out in Millie’s mind the most at the turning point of her illness was when she was told to ask herself, ‘Who am I without my eating disorder? Who am I? And what are my values?
She talks openly about the healing process and that you can almost look at the recovery like a blank canvas, recovery offers you a change to reinvent yourself and create an intimate understanding of self where you get to know yourself inside and out. Millie says to grab that, harness it and create the life you truly want to be living.
Along with a number of her therapists and mentors Millie is paving the way discussing what it means to BE in an eating disorder.

SLP 26: Self Love Quicky – In Honour Of Our Beloved Pets
Thursday Nov 26, 2020
Thursday Nov 26, 2020
There is something quite magnificent about animals and to those of us who are pet owners I particularly dedicate this podcast to YOU!
I lost my mini black panther Meisha on the 12th November. She was 15 years of age.
We got Meisha off death row from the RSPCA in Auckland when she was just a kitten. She was cheeky, self-sufficient, her own kind of lady boss and was a cruisey, loving sweetheart who gave her love unconditionally.
Losing a pet is heartbreaking, and I know for anyone listening to this will appreciate how much your heart and soul hurts when you do.
This week I particularly want to honour our beautiful wee Meisha. I also want to honour all the incredible VET’s out there. You guys do an amazing job, you are one of a kind and I love how you not only love all animals and somehow have to understand them and their problems, you also appreciate the owners and their love of their beloved pets.
You are phenomenal souls, and I particularly want to thank Nicklin Way Vets and Jan from Sunshine Vets for making our wee girls’ transition so beautiful. And thankyou to Pet Rest Cremations for also making this part of the grieving process that little bit easier. You are all incredible souls.
Even if you are not a pet owner one of the kindest and most thoughtful things is to give to your local RSPCA and Animal Refuge centres. These amazing places rely on us to support them to take care of the animals that have been hurt, lost or abandoned. Please give to them as often as you can even if it is your old towels and blankets. Every little bit matters.
To those of you who have lost a pet or have a sick pet, my heart goes out to you. I send all my love and the biggest of fur hugs.
Whenever someone loses a pet close to me I send them a copy of a book by Cynthia Rylant – Cat Heaven and Dog Heaven. They are gorgeous books for families who lose their fur baby.
Never underestimate the grief experienced in losing your pet. And give yourself the time and energy to grieve for them.
I am so grateful to Pet Rest Cremations here on the Sunshine Coast who took Meisha and then brought her back to us with this beautiful poem in the card with her paw print.
Do not stand and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand and mourn for me.
For with you, I will always be.
I am also grateful to my mum, my sister and brother for their love and messages as they loved our wee mini panther too. My brother sent me this wee message:
Paw Prints On My Heart
You came into my life one day, so beautiful and smart,
My dear and sweet companion, I loved you from the start.
And though I knew the time would come, when we would have to part,
You’ll never be forgotten, you left paw prints on my heart.

SLP 25: Playing The Part Of Me with Luke Hines
Tuesday Nov 24, 2020
Tuesday Nov 24, 2020
“And then when I drawback to my younger years of primary school and high school where I struggled with my weight I’m like hang on there’s something in this here. I’ve got a platform on television where I’m performing and I’m ticking that box out of my energy, and I’m talking about something I’m passionate about that actually transformed my life when I was overweight, now I can help others do the same thing through this large platform and having a really cool voice. So now it’s 2020 the face is holding up alright, but the goal is to perform, share, project, be confident and share far and wide health, wellness, vitality, happiness – it’s the best part I could have ever got because it’s me being me.” Luke Hines
A deep-dive conversation with the incredible Luke Hines celebrity chef, author and television host, where we talk about breaking and healing, living your best life, the highs and lows of Luke’s life, his self-care rituals, how to plan your day, how loneliness has affected him, we talk sexuality, negativity, social media, covid, Luke’s mum who is his idol, his love of animals and how to support people you love through challenging times… and of course we talk cauliflower!
This amazing podcast dives into the life and times of the incredible Luke Hines, someone who in his early years, always struggled with his weight. He knew he wasn’t taking the best care of himself and one day woke up and realised he needed to make some positive changes if he was to live to his true potential and have a happy and healthy life. So he began eating well, moving his body, reading and researching, and most importantly started thinking more positively about himself and for the first time he truly started to believe in himself that he could achieve anything if he put his heart into it.
Luke went to University and attained a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Musical Theatre Performance (the same degree that Hugh Jackman completed). He performed for a few years in some great shows but soon realised that the lonely on-the-road life of an actor was not what he wanted, so he studied health and fitness and became a personal trainer. He was a finalist on MKR where his love of television was born.
He appreciates how much his life has come full circle. Twelve best-selling cookbooks to his name and nutritional therapy qualifications he has developed programs and products to combine his passion, expertise and love for nutrient-dense delicious meals, realistic mindset motivation, and the moves that will keep you well for life, because his number one goal is to help people positively change their life to be the best, healthiest and happiest version of you.
Lukes non-negotiable self-care rituals include:
good coffee
beach with Ty and the puppies
family time
sunrise
set up the day with a plan
good food choices
gym and work out
plan what to eat and to get to bed early
sleep well
The podcast Luke speaks of that inspired him is with Jeff Probst – host of American Survivor.
This beautiful human is one in a million, I know you will love this interview as much as I had the pleasure to bring it to you.

SLP 24: Self Love Quicky – Eliminate Stress with Breath and Gratitude
Thursday Nov 19, 2020
Thursday Nov 19, 2020
One of the best ways to eliminate stress costs very little time and no money. Your breath and perception of gratitude will be your saving grace. Learning the simple act of taking long deep breaths and always finding something to be grateful for will instantly change your bio-chemistry and have you change your state instantly. If it seems to good to be true, this week’s Self Love Quicky will be a good one to tune into!
How on earth do we get off the stress express and take some time for ourselves when we feel overwhelmed and strung out, stressed or worried?
I had the pleasure of listening to Dr Libby Weaver recently talking about the challenges for women to get off the stress express. She said women have less energy and are now more stressed than ever. Many have father’s jobs as well as mother’s responsibilities.
She said one needed to think of energy like a bank account. If you are not depositing (with things like eating healthy, sleeping well, meditating, exercising, getting sunshine and doing all the other ‘right’ things) and always withdrawing, even going into overdraft, you will soon pay interest.
When the body is stressed (or in danger as our ancestors would see it) the body will choose glucose to support it to run from that danger. Not such a bad problem thousands of years ago, but today we are more stressed and eating more sugar than ever before.
Sugar has fast become our energy source and this is playing havoc with our bodies, hormones and wellbeing. Nothing replaces an amazing way of eating. Real food is the foundation of everything. Good fuel in will give your body the best chance to survive and even thrive through stressful and challenging times.
You don’t have to be perfect with your eating but it’s what you do consistently that matters. Look also at the chemicals in your environment. Unknowingly there may be many unnecessary chemicals around your home that could be wreaking havoc and causing stress on your system. There are 50trillion cells in your body. It is essential each one of them receives the right nutrients and the right care for optimum output.
Check out Self Love Podcast show number 2 on aromatherapy and how powerful it can be as an alternative to everyday chemicals and products that you may be unknowingly using in your home.
Let’s take a closer look at what stress is doing to our nervous system and eating habits. The CNS (central nervous system) is seen as the conscious mind; the ANS (autonomic nervous system) the unconscious. This breaks down into the SNS (sympathetic nervous system – the red zone!) the fight or flight response and the PNS (parasympathetic nervous system the green zone!) the rest, digest, repair and reproduce centre!
When you are in stress mode or fight or flight mode the adrenaline needs kick in. Blood supply to the digestive system digresses from the gut to the extremities. Interesting that one in five women have IBS – irritable bowel syndrome. When the body feels in danger or stressed it will choose glucose to fuel it.
Thousands upon thousands of people use glucose not fat as their fuel. And if you are constantly in SNS it changes your desires to consume. Your body naturally will want more sugar, more sweet foods. And this is where many reach for refined sugary foods – like a muffin or cake at 3pm in the afternoon for example.
The worse part about this is often eating like this can lead to guilt. Many women get home and figure they have ruined it for the day so they have wine and cheese when they get home and then think stuff it – have blown it might as well have dessert too.
Then they lie in bed trying to sleep feeling so guilty beating themselves up. And whilst you might think start again tomorrow and you will find the will power we have to remember we are built on ancient mechanisms and these will override and dominate behaviours. We forget and seem to think that we cannot choose what we do. That something else is controlling us.
Well, in fact we can and with the right perception – with gratitude – you simply cannot be stressed. If you can begin your day thinking about how ridiculously grateful you’re you are giving your body the best chance to be in the PNS – the green zone. You wake up feeling energised and avoid long periods of time in the red zone. Better still add in the Daily Body Boost (a two minute all over body massage using natural oils) and you are really setting yourself up for a great day.
Check out the Self Love Podcast number 18 to know how to do the Daily Body Boost ritual.
But here’s one step further. It has been proven that along with the right food and as small amount of toxic load as possible, the biggest thing that truly helps to change the bio-chemistry is your external breath and extending it. Taking nice long deep breaths into the belly where your tummy extends as well as your chest has been proven to massage internal organs and create internal calm.
Aim to take 20 nice long slow breaths each day. First thing in the morning might be a good time for you to try or just as you are going to bed. When you breathe slowly fat is used way more efficiently. Become breath aware. Simply place your right hand over your naval then the left hand over that. Practice breathing by moving your tummy as well, see your hands move as you breathe.
Dr Libby believes most people believe the opposite to stress is calm. She believes it is trust. Two things in particular. Things that cause stress tend to be about:
What you really care about or
What frightens you…
So much stress comes from your beautiful heart. It is remarkable that you care so much or are worried about something… And most women are raised to be a good girl. It is the highest of human needs to serve and contribute. But what is this really doing to your health?
Think about the things that really stress you. Even take a moment to write them down just so you are aware of them. Do you wake each morning feeling like – Wow! I have such a busy day today, I am so excited! Or do you feel like – OMG! I have got so much to get done today… Now ask yourself if you are stressed about it – is it fear? Fear you will miss out? Or fear of letting other people down? Your emotions drive a lot of behaviours and experiences.
Sometimes a change in perspective can help. Good nutrition is obviously important. Just remember that any diet change should come from a place of kindness not harshness. This is where eating more SLOW food (seasonal, local, organic and whole), more greens and water will certainly serve you.
And try the breath exercise. Here’s the bonus – add in essential oils to your breathing exercise to truly anchor in its benefits. Use essential oils in place of harsh chemicals in your skincare, personal care products and even cleaning products.
One of my absolute favourites for the Daily Body Boost is Sandalwood.
Sandalwood is one of the most beautiful, grounding and most of the precious oils to create a sense of oneness. It is renowned for promoting a profound sense of well-being. It can soothe nervous tension and anxiety and is ideal when you are worried or feeling like you have little control. It is a wonderful oil to help relieve stress and support an increase in confidence and self-esteem. Take your beautiful bottle of Sandalwood, try this amazing ritual and see what unfolds.
Sandalwood Ritual – Place a drop of Sandalwood on a tissue and tuck it into your top. Light your vaporiser, add 4 drops Sandalwood, 2 drops Geranium and 3 drops Lime or Orange. Find a place of rest, either sitting on your bed, on a comfortable chair, even the floor. As long as you are upright and comfortable and your vaporiser is close.
Now sit quietly, take three deep, relaxed breaths and centre yourself. Now focus on the breath and as you take a breath in say aloud or within ‘I am at one with the universe, I am grounded and embrace all that is.’ Then breathe out relaxed and slowly. Repeat it again and now really focus on those words and what they are actually saying.
Now, allow your breath to carry your thoughts for another few minutes or for as long as you desire. And trust when you feel the time is ready to slowly bring your awareness to the present moment, you can smile and be grateful for all that is.
I hope you love Sandalwood too… In my humble opinion it is pure magic in a bottle!

SLP 23: The Tsunami Of Change with Kirsty Wirth
Tuesday Nov 17, 2020
Tuesday Nov 17, 2020
“It made me realise that I have resilience that prepared me to go through what I had to go through with my son Noah. I always think that there is no way that had I not been through the Tsunami and then all the counselling afterwards of all the post-traumatic stress that I had, had I not been through that I would not have had the tools , the resilience, I wouldn’t have had the gumption to then be able to go through what I’ve been through with Noah. So it was my trnaing ground, it was my absolute training ground and yes it is a metaphor for the fact that I see adversity and I bring it on and I look at what can I learn? What can I understand? What’s the shining light out of this? And then how can I use this for community, for external… it’s nothing about me.” Kirsty Wirth
Welcome to the amazing Kirsty Wirth, not only a remarkable woman with an incredible story but a clever and very strong woman determined to let her challenges become the lessons for others to benefit from so she can leave the world a better place.
In this week’s podcast we talk all things resilience, something Kirsty has mastered through her surviving the Boxing Day Tsunami when on December 26 it will mark 15 years since a 9.1 magnitude quake off the coast of Indonesia’s Aceh province triggered a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and nine other countries. Her determination and resourcefulness is something born of this experience which has also taught her to master problem-solving with sheer strength, tenacity and a never say die attitude.
Kirsty has a number of University degrees to her name. She is passionate about education and learning all she can. She loves to be outdoors in nature, she loves to camp, mountain bike and hike.
She had a number of challenges with her health as a young girl but neither her mum or she knew what was wrong and after many unknown diagnoses, antibiotics, a diet that may not have served her, the environment and her genetics that Kirsty learned to live with her problems. She was a typical young woman who partied and played hard and thankfully found nature to be her saviour.
It was when she had her own children with health issues that she became vigilant, determined and focused on solving their health problems, refusing to let them endure what she had. We talk about the lengths she and her husband Mark went to to help their two children. And how that lead to her starting her own company Kultured Wellness.
“I am the founder of Kultured Wellness, a company whose mission is to inspire and educate people to take control of their health by eating real and fermented foods that nourishes the brain and the gut. I am the brainchild behind the Kultured Wellness Culture Starters and functional supplements, the Kultured Wellness Optimal Gut Healing Programs and the proud co-author of GUTALICIOUS. I have been fortunate to have appeared on numerous leading health and wellness podcasts and I love being able to break down complex concepts into easy to understand information. My qualifications and experience in education, teaching and research spans over 15 years and continues to drive my purpose of empowering our community to gain knowledge and understanding to become well and thrive. I am also a HUGE nature lover, a mother, wife and a fervent advocate for children on the spectrum.” Kirsty Wirth

SLP 22: Self Love Quicky – The Importance of Loving Yourself
Thursday Nov 12, 2020
Thursday Nov 12, 2020
We hear it all the time – love yourself, look after yourself, be good to yourself, be positive – and we all know we should – but the truth is we find it much easier to dislike ourselves, beat ourselves up, knock ourselves and be negative! Why is that? Seriously what is this strange, degrading fallacy all about? In this week’s Self Love Quicky I am talking about the importance of changing this self-talk and loving yourself up!
If you are not totally happy with where you are at right now then that’s ok, you have a choice to change that but guess what? If you really do want to change, you have to know you must act on it and do something about it. No point complaining about anything anymore, just get onto it and do what needs to be done.
It’s amazing when you see how people transform their lives, we are inspired seeing people pick themselves up, we all love to see before and after photos and we often dream it could be us doing all these things. Well, the time is now… It’s time to say I love me and it’s my turn to make a difference!
There are beautiful anchoring rituals you can do to say you love yourself. Things like eating whole and real foods, using skincare products that are free from harmful chemicals (check out the cards link below), using your essential oils, putting on your diffuser each day, a lavender and peppermint footbath, get outdoors and move your body, barefoot earthing, decluttering cupboards, drawers, wallets and your handbag, saying a beautiful grace before you eat, being more in the moment and being present, journalling and saying things you are truly grateful for.
Here is the link to the gorgeous aromatherapy synergy blends I mention, you can click here.
If you are still struggling on how to change your mindset, then how would you want your young child or teenage son or daughter to love themselves? How would you want to hear your best friend talk about him or herself? Or your mum or dad? What would you like to hear them say about themselves? More importantly, how would you remind them of their goodness, their amazing strength and their beauty if they were running themselves down or not making an effort to care for themselves?
Well, it’s time to turn that amazing advice on yourself and create your own special self-care rituals. And remember you are part of the ripple effect. Every positive thing you say and do has an effect on all of those around you. No more I am not good enough. This is the time to start a new trend, it’s time to say ‘Life is good, I matter, I am worth it and I love me to bits!’
If you would like to get yourself some delicious aromatherapy products like oils and a diffuser or you would like to try a completely natural range of amazing chemical-free skincare then head on over to www.twenty8.com and don’t forget your discount code below.
If you would love a brilliant wallet-sized card with ingredients to avoid in food and skincare then you can check them out right here.
THANKYOU FOR LISTENING… If you would like to share your feedback on this podcast please head to my Facebook and Instagram pages below. SLP 21: Finding Your True Self with Dr Damian Kristof
Tuesday Nov 10, 2020
Tuesday Nov 10, 2020
“Well, there are times in my life where I have not loved much at all, to be honest with you. Where I’ve seen the blank screen of a monitor and that felt like I couldn’t see into the future like it felt like I couldn’t see into the future. Like I literally just saw black. In that time there’s not much that you like about yourself. You don’t like the person you’ve become, you don’t like the things that you say or the things that you do, or the people you piss off of the people that you surround yourself with or whatever else. Those times are tough. But what I really like about me these days is that… what do I love? I love that I laugh, that I love to tell a joke. I love that the person that I am these days. I am not trying to be anybody different. I’ve really found who my true self is.” Dr Damian Kristof
This is a wonderful conversation with one of Australia’s top health and wellness experts. Dr Damian Kristof is not only an amazing wellness mentor, he is also a dear and treasured friend. Damian is thoughtful, clever, humble and very smart. He shares his philosophy for health and wellness so openly and we get an insight into his world with huge love and the power of vulnerability in finding your true self. If you have ever heard him speak or listened to The Wellness Guys on The Wellness Couch podcast channel, you will know how much he makes you think outside the square, challenges you to not follow the status quo and do your own research to make informed decisions.
In this interview, we talk about times where Damian has been challenged financially and emotionally, what he does to take care of himself and how he has embraced learning how to love himself. He talks the philosophy of touch, naturopathy, nutrition, homeopathy, chiropractic and how all of these modalities can support us to move from sympathetic dominance to a balanced dance between sympathetic and parasympathetic throughout your day.
“You have the opportunity to heal yourself. So you hear of people who meditate or people who follow yogi practices or maybe have an anti-inflammatory lifestyle or diet or move a lot, or they show lots of gratitude or they take time to breathe, do lots of stretches, open up their chest and their heart. They do all these so it’s these sorts of things that can actually move you towards rest, digest and repair which is a really great place to be. And you want to cycle between sympathetic and parasympathetic throughout the day. You don’t just want to be in parasympathetic all day because too much rest is not good. And you don’t want to be too sympathetic because stress is not good either. You want to kind of weave your way through the day moving in and out of parasympathetic and sympathetic in order to function properly. And we know with stress comes strength.” Dr Damian Kristof
We talk about the impact of love, especially for those who have hurt you or let you down. We talk about how to become an attractor of goodness and kindness and love, and the importance of making the decision to be the person who can forgive and be ready for love.
I ask Damian questions like what does he love about himself? What does self-love mean to him? How can we help ourselves when we don’t feel great or that we belong anywhere? We talk Covid and the meaning of this moving forward.
I sincerely hope you enjoy listening to this remarkable soul share himself so openly and with such vulnerability and care. It’s pretty special.
