SLP 56: Self Love Quicky – Essential Oils For Menopause
Thursday Mar 11, 2021
Thursday Mar 11, 2021
Thank you to one of our beautiful listeners for asking the question, ‘Can essential oils help with menopause?’ because in this week’s self-love quicky we go into some of the best oils to support a woman through this transitionary time.
The word menopause can strike fear in many women. We’ve generally been taught to fear it, fear “the change”. However, in more recent times, we’ve come to know, learn and accept more about this new phase of womanhood. We know it’s not something to be feared, but something we can embrace, learn about and from, and celebrate this new phase of our lives. One tool we can use to support us through this change is essential oils. Essential oils are a wonderful support tool to use throughout the various stages of life’s journey, and the transition into menopause can be aided by them too. But what is menopause? What oils can help offer relief and support?
So, what is menopause?
The term “menopause” refers to the final menstrual period and marks the end of a woman’s reproductive life. The lead-up, called perimenopause can last between 5 to 10 years, hence the term transition is used.
According to the Australasian Menopause Society, symptoms commonly experienced during peri- and post-menopausal women include hot flushes and night sweats, bodily aches and pains, dry skin, vaginal dryness, loss of libido, urinary frequency, and sleeping difficulties. Approximately 60% of women will have mild symptoms for around 4-8 years, 20% of women will have no symptoms at all while another 20% will be severely affected, with symptoms continuing into their 60s or later. (Australasian Menopause Society)
Perimenopause often begins with irregularities in your cycle. This can include skipping cycles or having cycles that come too quickly. You may start to experience chronic fatigue, trouble sleeping, mood swings, or depression. This is the time your progesterone levels begin to dip. Progesterone is the hormone that makes us feel good, emotionally stable and nourished.
So where do we start with our oils? What oils can support us during this cycle of our lives?
Stress
Stress levels can change easily during this phase of our lives, so it is important to manage your stress. Diffusing oils such as Neroli, Lavender or Geranium may help reduce the stress you are experiencing. Neroli is known to act as a natural sedative and can help reduce stress, irritability, and feelings of overwhelm and anger. Lavender is cherished for its calming and relaxing properties and can help ease signs of stress within our bodies. Geranium is useful in helping bring balance and harmony to our bodies and minds, and a must-have oil for your menopausal management toolkit. Place a drop of the oil on a tissue and inhale the calming aroma throughout the day or whenever you feel your stress levels rising.
Sleep
Changes in our hormones can affect our sleep patterns, so it is important to get good quality sleep as much as you can. Oils that can support your sleep include Lavender, Vetiver and Sweet Marjoram. Lavender is widely used and well known for its ability to help us relax and used in numerous commercial products as a sleep aid. The smell of Vetiver is reminiscent of wet soil, so, for some it isn’t the most pleasant smell, but it has an amazing capacity to heal us in many ways. It can help us centre ourselves, relax and unwind, especially when it comes to mental and physical exhaustion. Sweet Marjoram is calming and nurturing, and a must for any sleep blend. In your diffuser, try this simple blend: 3 drops of Lavender, 1 drop of Vetiver and 2 drops of Sweet Marjoram prior. Diffuse it for about 30 minutes prior to heading off to sleep, and make sure it is turned off before you fall asleep. It will make your room a calming space and help you to fall and stay asleep.
Feeling Blue
Whilst some women embrace this time and change of life, for many, it can bring a sense of loss and confusion leaving you feeling down. Essential oils are a great way to help uplift you. Your favourite essential oil may help during this time, or you can try Geranium, Rose or Bergamot. Geranium brings a sense of balance, and Rose can soothe the heart and uplift your spirit, whilst Bergamot can ease tension and anxiety.
Add a drop or two of these oils to your diffuser or place a drop on a tissue. You might want to create a personal perfume for yourself using these oils. Place a drop or two of each of these oils in a 10ml roller bottle and fill with jojoba or apricot kernel oil – these are just two carrier oils that could be used. Whenever you need a pick-me-up or you can feel the feelings arising, roll the bottle over your wrists or pulse points, and feel the blues dissipate.
Hot Flushes and Night Sweats
Hot flushes and night sweats are the symptoms most commonly associated with menopause. It is due to our changing hormone levels, and our inability to effectively manage their fluctuations. Peppermint, Geranium, Lavender and Neroli would be good additions to your essential oil toolkit,
Peppermint can be cooling in low dilutions which would be great for helping cool down the heat, whilst Geranium brings a sense of balance and restoration to our bodies. Neroli is known for its ability to support, stabilise and regenerate the soul and emotions so adding it to our options is perfect as the hot flushes and night sweats are due to changing hormones; therefore, Neroli can help stabilise the changing hormone levels. Lavender is purported to be very relaxing and calming to our systems and a must for every home.
Before heading to bed, place a face washer in a bowl of cool water then a couple of the above essential oils. Swirl the oils around in the water with the face washer, then place the face washer on your neck or chest area for a few minutes. This will help cool your skin down. Keep the face washer and bowl beside your bed, so you can use it during the night if you need.
Another option is, after your nightly shower, massage your favourite carrier oil like Sweet Almond or Jojoba Oil into your skin. Add 3-5 drops of the oils into the carrier beforehand, then massage all over your body.
Here is a link to my favourite Body Boost Ritual – click here
Other things to consider…
Track your cycle
As we move through the menopause process, it is important to note the changes in our cycle. Have a look at apps such as Flo or MyFlow – you can use these free phone apps to monitor symptoms and changes in your cycle. This information can be useful for your doctor, and it can help you manage your cycle better.
Apps not your thing? That’s ok, use your diary to note your mood, your cycle, your flow. All the information will give you a clearer picture of what’s happening within your body as you move through the menopause phase.
Hydrate
Dehydration can lead to elevated stress, so it is important to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Don’t like water? Add a slice of fruit such as lemon or lime, or some herbs such a basil or mint for a refreshing flavour. Do NOT add essential oils to your water. The oils will float on top of the water, and you’ll essentially be drinking the oils straight. This can cause damage to the mucous membranes. Read our article on essential oil ingestion for more information.
Be gentle and loving to yourself
As we move through this phase of our lives, it is important to practice self-love and self-care. Practising gratitude, moving our bodies gently each day, meditating, and journaling all can help us greatly. This phase of our lives can bring us many challenges but is also a great opportunity to thrive and explore ourselves in a new light. Our beautiful can certainly help and support us on this journey.
Be gentle with yourself. Be kind to yourself. Give love to yourself. You’ve got this.

SLP 55: Be Calm But Wild with Lauren Verona
Tuesday Mar 09, 2021
Tuesday Mar 09, 2021
What an exquisite conversation with yoga teacher and entrepreneur Lauren Verona weaving the spiritual and ascetic discipline of this ancient practice into today’s fast-paced world. We dive deep into the meaning of slowing down, creating daily disciplines and rituals all to truly master the art of being human. You are going to love this precious soul’s approach to being calm with a touch of wild!
“I think they said something to me on the weekend about me. They said mum, it’s very funny that you’re a yogi because you’re so calm but you’re so wild. And isn’t that the feminine though? This is what we need. And this is what we’re trying to teach them, that’s feminine. We’re chaotic women. Around the cycle we can go into ‘I just want to stay home in bed, just chill and just you know, read a book and eat chocolate…. to I just want to build an empire and take on the world!’ And I think that’s the feminine. And we need to recognise that we’re all of that in one month!” Lauren Verona
Lauren is a passionate businesswoman, yoga teacher and business mentor who has created and grown four thriving yoga communities across Australia. She is also the creator of The Love Tank – an online community that helps women to embrace self-love, seize opportunities and create the life they truly desire.
Lauren’s energy and enthusiasm for life are contagious and she has a unique talent for helping others knock down the barriers that are holding them back.
Over the past 10 years, Lauren has guided thousands of women to connect with their true sense of purpose so that they can become the best version of themselves.
Her insights, compassion for people of all abilities and a light sense of humour bring a unique blend of instruction and guidance that is refreshing and down to earth.
Heat is built quickly in her classes and within moments she will move your heart, body and mind through an array of sequences and poses blended with Sun Salutations in her beautiful Power Flow classes.
Lauren discovered yoga whilst she was running a full-time PR company in Melbourne and within months of completing her teacher training was teaching full time. As a mother of two, she understands life’s challenges of finding time for herself and is passionate about assisting others with finding that balance.
Find out more about Lauren Lauren Verona at www.laurenverona.com
Lauren explains to us the history of yoga and how it was the one discipline that saved her from her frantic corporate career and personal and mental health concerns. She shares how yoga taught her to love herself and find her true self.
Lauren shares her meaning of self-love comes from one of the 10 guidelines of yoga – ahisma.
Ahimsa is an important spiritual doctrine shared by Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. It literally means ‘non-injury’ and ‘non-killing’. It implies the total avoidance of harming of any kind of living creatures not only by deeds, but also by words and in thoughts.
The practice of ahisma allows everyone to live their own path rather than try to point out or make suggestions. Helping other people is not ahisma. You can hold space, love and support. But more importantly shine your own light and embody self-love.
Lauren discusses the power of discipline which is known as ‘tapas’ in sanskrit and the importance of rituals and to make time every day to flirt with discovering YOU and to trust the journey.
Life is always teaching us, we need to regularly show up. Keep polishing it and make time to master every hour and polish it.

SLP 54: Self Love Quicky – Am I Really Making A Difference?
Wednesday Mar 03, 2021
Wednesday Mar 03, 2021
Do you ever wonder if what you say or do really matters? Is it really that important, & does it really, actually make a difference? Have you ever questioned if what you have, or do, is enough? And do you ever find yourself wondering some days if it’s really all worth it? In this week’s Self Love Quicky I share with you a little the times that I have had these same questions & I share with you the message I read when I feel that doubt, to remind myself that maybe, just maybe it is possible that we do.
I’m not sure about you, but this question does come up a number of times, whether it’s as a mum, a partner, a friend even a businesswoman…
The point is there are always times we question our worth and its when you receive beautiful messages like the one I read on today’s podcast that you actually realise you do.
Please take the time to let someone know how much they mean to you, or the difference they have made in your life. You have no idea how much it means and what it can mean to someone.
Here is what the beautiful Christin Plint sent me one day after Cyndi, Carren and I were questioning ourselves as to whether or not it was all worth it and if indeed we were making a difference?
And here is the link on the Up For A Chat podcast I mentioned.
From Christin Plint:
So I thought I would share a little story with you about the evolution of one of my workmates.
As some of you may be aware, I work in mining, in the port side of the operations. To paint a picture it basically means I operate giant machines, loading huge ships at up 8000 Tonnes an hour and other equipment to keep the plant running. I am the only female on a shift of “big tough” men and the only female some of these guys have ever worked with. It can be exhausting. The hard part is to be accepted as part of the crew while still maintaining my own feminine identity – if you know me you will have heard my potty mouth will know its a struggle!
One of the better jobs is in the train unloading station. It is where I get to spend hours upon hours listening to podcasts, play catch up with my homework & probably spend a little too much time on Facebook.
A few shifts a week I’ll have one guy that comes down to relieve me in the station he walks in the door and asks “so what are we being brainwashed with today.” I’ll tell him what I’m listening to & we’ll have a bit of a discussion or debate about it. It would usually end in him calling me a hippie. Apart from being a miner he grew up on a cane farm and farms cattle too.
One week I decided to introduce him to Kim Morrison. I played him the Wellness guys episode on Chemicals that make us sick and obese.
He came into work the next week and said he went home and played it for his wife and daughter. And then he said “so it turns out we already had some of those Essential Oils thingies. And now each night before I go to bed I read a few pages of my book and just before I fall asleep, I put a couple of drops of Lavender on my pillow.”
Me “Oh my goodness! You have a ritual!”
Him “A what? A ritual? Nah, nah, it’s just something I do before I go to bed each night.”
A few weeks later he said “that talk on chemicals really got to me. Every night I massage my wife’s feet with lotion, it’s something I have always done. Lately, I haven’t been able to do it knowing that the lotion could be so bad for her, so I went and got some beeswax and some coconut oil and made my own lotion and I’ve started using that on her instead.”
Fast forward a few more weeks… “You’re bloody sending me mad with this stuff! On my days off I found borer’s in my trees and instead of spraying them like I normally would I got a pin and poked them through their holes in the tree. It was embarrassing! You know I used to sell pesticides for a living right?”
After having him listen to a podcast on sugar “you can’t play me this! I’m a cane farmer! What am I going to do now?!”
We have had many heated discussions on chemicals, pesticides & herbicides. Roundup was one that kept coming up, with him saying “you’re being brainwashed by all this hey, this is all fear-mongering. Round up is a safe chemical, trust me, I used to sell it, I’ve sat through seminars on the stuff…”
I played him the Up For A Chat episode after the MINND forum & another interesting podcast of wheat by the Good Doctors.
The lights started to come on. He came back after days off and said “it turns out I’m the one that has been brainwashed. If only you knew the conferences & seminars I sat through on round up. I was told it was safe I didn’t know what they were really doing with it. I didn’t know it would end up in our food.”
Now for the really exciting news… In the past few weeks, he said “you know, I’ve been losing sleep because of you…
My parents are getting old and they need to sell their farm. I would hate to see it go to someone else but how could I invest in another sugar cane farm knowing what I know now? Also, all of this talk of conservation and chemical-free living has made me realise I don’t want to hand over a farm to my children one day, there is enough of them around. I want to hand over something special.
I think I want to regenerate that land and turn it into a nature reserve. There is already a large part of uncleared land, creeks and a lake I want to turn it into some form of Eco-retreat so others can enjoy it and it’ll be there for generations to come.”
How freaking amazeballs is that!!!! So, Kim Morrison never for a second question whether what you are doing is making an impact. It truly is. One 30 minute podcast you made a couple of years ago may lead to a nature reserve being created for generations to come.
I sincerely hope you don’t ever underestimate the impact and effect and difference YOU make. Can not wait to hear your feedback on this one and please celebrate with me the times you have made a difference!SELF LOVE PODCAST SPONSOR LINKS

SLP 53: When We Know Better We Do Better with Cyndi O’Meara
Tuesday Mar 02, 2021
Tuesday Mar 02, 2021
When we know better, we do better. And as we educate ourselves we do better. I’m the same. I’ve learned through the thirty years I’ve had kids and even before that. And as I learn I do better. Even the food I fed my kids I realise now it probably wasn’t the best food because I was feeding them organic flour and now I know that was Triticum aestivum that was hybrodised wheat. Even though it was organic it was probably still contaminated. I used raw sugar, I should have been using rapadura sugar. I probably fed them on too many carbohydrates. I can go through that whole guilt too. But that was the best I could do at the time. And I was doing better than anyone else out there too. But now that I know better I’ll do better with my grandchildren.” Cyndi O’Meara
I am super excited to bring to you one of the world’s most well renowned and respected Nutritionists’ and Researchers’ Cyndi O’Meara. This week this very dear friend of mine and I take a deep dive into how food is affecting every part of our life, soul and being. Cyndi explains how important education, being observant and having an open, curious and enquiring mind is how we will know better in order to do better.
Cyndi is about educating. Her greatest love is to teach, both in the public arena and within the large corporate food companies, to enable everyone to make better choices so they too can enjoy greater health throughout their lives. Her unique, surprisingly simple yet extensively researched but down-to-earth approach, challenges and encourages others to eliminate unhealthy habits and has inspired thousands to make smarter choices about the food they choose to put into their body.
Cyndi confronts her audiences, whether, within the public or corporate sectors, she has the courage to call out deception and misinformation and believes in arming people with the tools and resources to reach their goals.
By educating people on food choices, how to read food labels, why diets don’t work, and how drugs can affect your total well-being and vitality, Cyndi empowers them to make long-lasting changes with simple and achievable steps on how to create healthier habits.
Cyndi suggests the following simple 6 ingredients for great health:
Sunshine and moon cycles and circadian rhythms
Quality of sleep
Breath – clean air and breath and nose breathing
Movement, nature and grounding
Connection
Food
Cyndi’s Favourite Quotes:
‘Get back in the kitchen to feen and nourish our families to heal a nation.’ Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride
‘If we can see our body as a wonder, we also have the opportunity to see the earth as wonder, and healing can begin for the body of the earth. When we go home and take care of ourselves we heal not only our own bodies and minds, but we help the earth as well.’ Thich Nhat Hanh
Some of the books and websites Cyndi mentions are as follows:
Silent Spring by Rachel Carson
Whitewash by Carrie Gillam
The Circadian Code – Satchin Panda
Breath – James Nestor

SLP 52: Self Love Quicky – Declutter Your Life
Thursday Feb 25, 2021
Thursday Feb 25, 2021
Clutter is debilitating. It can be stressful, impacting and create a complete sense of overwhelm, and for some… even failure. In this week’s quicky, I am talking about some simple steps you can take to not only declutter your home and office but also declutter your life. And we know when we declutter and make space, we create an opportunity and we get to invite new energy in.
There’s a whole bunch of advice out there, beginning with those sensible instructions to designate boxes either ‘charity’, ‘rubbish’, ‘keep’ or ‘unsure’ and then telling us we must make up our minds about what we put into the ‘unsure’ box within a week … or else.
We have a rule in our house: we only keep that which is useful and/or beautiful. You could try and adopt that mantra if it worked for you — even if you need to take baby steps — and see how an organised home and office can improve the way you get things done. And when you’re cleaning out those rooms, choose a blend from Basil, Rosewood, Pine, Rosemary and Lemon oils to use in a diffuser; it will help you stay focused and be more decisive.
Brian Tracy, in his book’ Eat That Frog’, reminds us of the basic principle of doing the jobs you least want to do first and then getting onto the things you do want to do. If you procrastinate on the yucky ones, they’ll wear you down and play at the back of your mind. For example, if tax time is a pain in the butt for you, then quit procrastinating, get up early tomorrow morning and just get it over and done with. You know you’ll have a wonderful sense of achievement (and relief!) when you do complete it. Just one step at a time.
Beyond general clutter, though, there’s another worthwhile challenge. Why not declutter and simplify your life as well as your cupboards? Living differently takes courage. So, bearing in mind that there’s nothing wrong with shopping for fun, or just buying things that take our fancy here are some reasons why living simply will recharge you and, yes, transform your life!
Less stress: simplifying the way you live requires you to make priorities of the things you value, whether they are possessions, goals or relationships. Less ‘stuff’ in the cupboard means you’ll keep the things you use or that bring you pleasure. What matters to you? Which possessions really make routines easy or your days richer? Focus on the things that matter to you: it’s very easy to fall into the trap of telling ourselves we’ll do something such as work on our dreams or help others when there’s time’ or ‘when … is finished’.
What about going a step further and deciding that you’ll concentrate on the things that matter to you and then, if there’s time, you can add the other things. Concentrating on things that matter to you is by no means selfish. It simply means you will begin to do the things you were put on this planet to do, rather than cluttering your life up with busyness. Work out what matters to you — and of course, that will be different for each of us because we’re all talented in different ways.
The other big idea that makes decluttering worthwhile — whether you’re getting rid of things or unnecessary routines — is that you’ll be making way for new things to come into your life. I have seen it on many occasions: people declutter their wardrobe and their weight suddenly begins to fall, or they organise their finances and then the money begins to flow in. It really is true — how can you possibly have more in your life when it’s full and cluttered already?
So go ahead over the next 28 days get serious about creating spaces that are organized, calm, practical and beautiful. Use label makers so everyone at your place can keep the system working, get the kids to help out, sell or give away what you no longer need, and value the things you keep. Do whatever it takes. And while you’re at it, do the same for your soul. Be strong and gracious about your priorities and watch what begins to happen. Let me know how you go!
Take action:
First things first, sort out your wardrobe and let’s be real, if you haven’t worn it in two years, you probably never will! Getting rid of the old makes way for the new!
Over the next 28 days aim to have your house completely organised. You may like to sit down and plan the month; set yourself weekly goals and what rooms or cupboard you will work on first. Having a plan makes it a lot easier to stick to.
Remember your mantra ‘unless it’s useful or beautiful I don’t need it’.
Plan your next adventure — make it exciting and fun and maybe away from the shops!

Tuesday Feb 23, 2021
Tuesday Feb 23, 2021
This week’s podcast is a beautiful deep dive into what it takes to lead yourself first. Lisa Thompson began her career after studying Psychology, Social Work and Counselling, working predominantly in crisis spaces, including youth homelessness and a hospital emergency department. She now describes herself as an expression of love, hope and inspiration, enlightening others that they too can reclaim their health and well-being by following the golden thread home to the healer within.
“My advice is to do the work on yourself. Because when people notice the change in you, it inspires them. But also what I’ve really noticed is the more work I do on myself, the more those around me shift and change based solely on my perception and the inner work that I’m doing, it’s such a fascinating thing to watch. When you heal things within yourself and then it has this… like a flow-on effect and things shift and change with the people around you. And so yes I guess my advice is to be the example and lead yourself first.” Lisa Thompson
Lisa has always been deeply passionate about her work however it wasn’t until she led herself through her own powerful journey of healing herself of an incurable condition and freeing her mind from the bind of past trauma that she really discovered therapies that light her up, energise her soul and create deep transformation from within.
Lisa is now proudly a certified Master Practitioner of NLP and Time-Line Therapy, Hypnotherapist, Integrative Health Practitioner, Meditation creator and Reiki Practitioner, shining a light and sharing the incredible gifts of traditional, holistic and natural healing practices.
Supporting mostly women both 1:1 and in group settings to address any area of life where they may be feeling stuck (family, career, finances, relationship and health), to clear what is unconsciously holding them back and allow them to propel forward, taking full responsibility for the creation of their life and therefore designing a world that they ultimately desire.

SLP 50: Self Love Quicky – What Is Natural Skincare?
Thursday Feb 18, 2021
Thursday Feb 18, 2021
This week I am celebrating 50 shows and I want to thank you especially for tuning in and making it a possibility. I am so grateful for all your love and shares and wanted to take this opportunity to also acknowledge my amazing business Twenty8 Essentials for being the main sponsor of the show. It is such a treat to align my passion for natural skincare and essential oils and my love of this podcast together and this week I answer a question I get asked all the time ~ What is Natural Skin Care?
What exactly is natural skin care? Is it the same as chemical-free? Does it have any bearing on organic or pure skin care? Do companies have to display or demonstrate their meaning of natural, organic and pure? It is one of the most confusing and scary things to question, and sadly it is not that easy to decipher.
Natural skin care was first recorded in Egypt in 1000BC. One of the first popular skincare treatments was a mixture of bullock’s bile, whipped ostrich eggs, olive oil, dough, resin and milk; this was thought to be beneficial for dry skin. It did not take long for someone to derive a more pleasant mixture for the face. Plant oils and herbal tinctures, and readily available ingredients such as honey and milk and fruits were used. Cold cream developed by the Greek physician Galen was a great success. Made from olive oil, beeswax, water and rose petals, it was said to have a cooling effect on the skin.
Today, thankfully no whipped ostrich eggs or bullocks bile in sight, truly natural skin care using essential oils, herbs, roots, flowers, clays, honey, and combining them with naturally occurring carrier agents and preservatives is still, for us, the best skincare option. This is because products using ingredients derived from nature and produced for use with as little human interference as possible are kinder to your skin. However, in the last 3,000 years human interference has become the norm in skincare products.
As the industrial revolution took shape, it became a lot cheaper and easier to synthesize ingredients found in nature. For example, the vegetable oil in cold cream was replaced with mineral oil. Synthetic ingredients don’t spoil like their natural counterparts, giving them a longer shelf-life and making the manufacture of beauty products a much more profitable venture. Synthetic ingredients also allow for a multitude of new concoctions to be added to the market with ease. During the nineteenth century the tide turned –beauty products became cash cows. As natural went out ‘scientific’ skin care came in. Women were impressed with the amazing claims that they would look younger and more beautiful than ever. The products available were endless, with lovely textures, smells and colours. It was exciting times as the industry boomed.
However some of us have always questioned this industry, because unlike a new drug which has to go through exhaustive testing before it can be used on the public, cosmetic ingredients are virtually unregulated. Contrary to popular belief the United States Food and Drug Administration (the FDA) does not regulate skincare and cosmetic products before they are sold. Generally, the FDA will only regulate a product once it has been released to the marketplace when and if they receive a complaint or a query from the public. Manufacturers may use any ingredient or raw material with the exception of colour additives and a few prohibited substances in a product without government review or approval. Australia and New Zealand are no exception to this worldwide situation.
Increasingly aware of this, the general public has called for more natural products. But here is the all elusive question…what is ‘natural’? The FDA and most other regulatory bodies have no actual definition of ’natural’. All ingredients are chemicals by definition. However, the term ’natural‘ has considerable market value in promoting skincare cosmetic products to consumers and, despite pressure from advocacy groups such as The Environmental Working Group (EWG), the FDA has not defined what ’natural‘ is or how to achieve it. In the market today we see thousands of skincare products claiming their ingredients are the best. Many are marketed using the natural angle, claiming they contain active botanicals and plant extracts. We are bombarded by hundreds of plant images and the promise of plant extracts to solve every beauty problem. Unfortunately when these extracts are suspended in a chemical synthetic base, as they are in most cosmetic products, any real enzyme activity the plant extract had is totally lost. To add to this, consumers are exposing themselves to harmful ingredients in the form of the synthetic base itself. Yet these products still claim that they are truly natural.
So how does the consumer navigate the shelves of the average pharmacy or beauty therapist? For the purist, there are regulatory bodies. Many will only certify products which have ingredients they consider to be safe. These are mainly natural ingredients though a few do allow some synthetics. So even regulatory bodies can be confusing. Then there are words like ‘organic’ and ‘pure’. These words are bandied around often with no real intention or meaning. We believe it is one of the hardest industries to believe and understand.
For most of us then, it comes down to a case of trust. Getting to know companies philosophies, personal integrity and understanding of their interpretation of what is ‘natural’ is the key. With a growing, though still small number of companies committed to a holistic and ethical approach to skin, we can, if we are able to understand and navigate the market successfully, see and use the best of both science and nature.
I grew tired of not knowing who to believe or what it all actually means. And although it took us over ten years to create – this is why we do what we do… Twenty8 was born, and we can honestly say we are incredibly in awe and proud of it. I hope you love it too!

SLP 49: When You Do The Work, The Work Works with Brendon Giebel
Tuesday Feb 16, 2021
Tuesday Feb 16, 2021
“Ask for help. As hard as it is, and I know it’s not bred in men to ask for help. It’s seen as a sign of weakness but just seek help pretty much. You don’t necessarily have to go out and say that my life’s so bad, what am I going to do with this and that, but yeah just ask for help and just understand it’s not a weakness to ask for help.” Brendon Giebel.
Another remarkable young man I have the privilege to interview this week. 29-year-old Brendon Giebel is the Founder & Lead Breakthrough Expert at Advanced Men’s Development. After being a shy, sad, lonely and depressed boy in his early 20’s he started on a journey to find who he was and what it takes to be a man. We hear his journey from not wanting to be here to the power of going within, and has discovered a systematic formula that is helping men do the same.
He has set himself some pretty big goals. His first target is to personally transform the lives of 1 million men and his second is to build the #1 training facility for Men in Australia.
Combining his skills as a Master Practitioner in NLP and Time Line Therapy, there is no man that he cannot transform.
So many shy, or more introverted men, can feel worthless or not good enough. Brendon explains how he was on the edge questioning himself if it was really all worth it and made a decision after he found a voice within question… ‘Are you really going to give up that easily?’ And being a pretty stubborn soul, he realised running away or ending it wasn’t going to work and made it his mission to do anything and everything he could to crawl out of that hole.
He shares his beautiful story of being told he needed medicating, that he was depressed and needed tablets to help, but Brendon felt differently. He believes you can feel sad, even deeply sad, but not everyone is depressed.
Rather than look at all the things not working in your life, ask yourself what is and what more do you want?
Self-awareness is something he advocates hugely. He has dedicated his life to helping people get out of their conscious mind and tap into the wonder and drive of the unconscious mind. He has some beautiful quotes and self-care rituals he suggests below.
He talks about the insight into people who annoy or trigger you, how important self-awareness and learning is to grow and let go of those triggers and he shares how having a coach or mentor or someone who supports you to do the work on yourself is when the work really starts to work for you.
He has advice for men over 30 and for those under 30. His wisdom and care are beyond his years.
You will love this amazing interview with an incredibly insightful and brilliant young man.
Brendon’s Quotes:
You change a man, you change a family
You change a family, you change a community
You change a community, you change a country
And you change a country, you can change the world.
“The world is divided & lays in broken heaps because man is divided within himself” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
WTD – Walk Think Discover – Self-Care Ritual

SLP 48: Self Love Quicky – Essential Oil Ingestion Safety
Thursday Feb 11, 2021
Thursday Feb 11, 2021
Essential oils are truly amazing, they can literally support and change lives and there are many ways in which we can use them powerfully. The ingestion of oils is perhaps one of the most controversial topics amongst users of essential oils, aromatherapy enthusiasts and practitioners and this week we address the importance of understanding how you could, but also understanding why you probably wouldn’t.
It is controversial because it is a complex area of aromatherapy called aromatic medicine, and one that the average enthusiast or practitioner has not studied in great depth. In the past, people were simple taught that no, we do not ingest essential oils; but, we have learned so much since then. And now the answer to the question is more complex.
In short, yes we can ingest essential oils, but, the question really is about whether you should, and whether it is safe to do so. Did you know that you are most likely already ingesting essential oils daily? It’s true. That is because they are used largely by the food and flavouring industry to enhance the flavour in products.
What we are talking about here is using essential oils for health and wellbeing at home. We are talking about whether it is safe, effective, and the reasons behind it all.
One drop of Lemon essential oil is not equivalent to one drop of Lemon juice or Lemon extract. Nor is one drop of Lemon essential oil in water a safe approach. Essentially, oil and water do not mix, so you are no diluting your oils by adding them to water. You would be drinking them neat, which is equivalent to drinking them straight from the bottle.
There is a time and place for ingestion. For the home user, the time and place should be making the time to see an appropriately qualified practitioner, and they can prepare a remedy for you based on your individual needs. It may or may not include the ingestion of oils depending on the goals and objectives of the aromatherapy consultation.
What about using essential oils in food preparations? Can this be done? In short, again, yes and as mentioned you could use them minimally in a cake or smoothie but remember to use them with some sort of fat.
There are several key points we need to understand and learn before we consider the safety. Potency, purity and GRAS status is important and there is much even more to know about this subject such as biology, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics to name a few.
Each drop of essential oil has been created from a large volume of plant matter, we call this essential oil yield.
The yield of essential oil from each plant can differ vastly, after all not all plants yield up the same amount of essential oil. Growing conditions, time of year of harvesting, skill and knowledge of the distiller, all play a part in how much oil is distilled from each plant. To produce 1kg of Lavender oil it takes approximately 120kgs of material. To produce Melissa oil, it takes 6,000kgs of plant matter to produce 1kg of essential oil.
Why does knowing the yield matter? Well, it highlights to us that a lot of raw material is needed to produce our oils, meaning they are extremely potent; which in turn means that one drop of oil can actually mean that it has several lemons in it or hundreds of grams of leaves and flowers in it.
When was the last time you used two or ten lemons in one glass of water? Or the last time you used several bunches of basil leaves in one dish? Put simply, we do not use this amount of raw material.
Whether we are diffusing oils, or putting them on our skin, or even ingesting them, we need to be under no doubt about their purity, that is are they exactly what they purport to be. Essentially a GC/MS report is like the fingerprint to that particular batch of distilled oil. Each oil will vary due to the climate it is grown in, the conditions its grown in, as well as other factors; however, the oil should be representative of every other oil produced of the species.
The company you purchase from should be able to verify the plant’s botanical species, that is that the Lavender used is the right one, and not blended with other subspecies of Lavender or Lavender chemical constituents. The average purchaser of essential oils is not trained in this, so it is up to the company you are purchasing from to determine this for you. They will label their bottles accordingly.
Purity is much more than most people understand, that is why you need to develop a good relationship with you preferred supplier, as you are placing a lot of trust in them, their abilities, and their processes.
Many essential oils have been designated GRAS status, meaning they are generally regarded as safe, for their intended purpose. The intended purpose component is the part that is generally forgotten by those who throw this term around. Essential oils are mostly used as food additives and flavouring, and they are considered to be generally recognised as safe when used in accordance with good manufacturing practices.
As Kreydin (2015) points out, most people stop digging further and “assume that this designation means that an essential oil is safe in any application that will be going into their mouth”; and this is not the case. GRAS just implies that the oil can be taken internally, but it doesn’t address the how and why component of the conversation.
There is some evidence to suggest that essential oils can positively influence the gut microbiome which sounds promising; however, many of the studies were conducted using essential oil constituents, not whole oils and were either conducted in vitro (a petri dish) or on animals.
We do know that there are commercially available preparations that use Peppermint essential oil to help balance bacteria due to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The difference between these commercially made products and DIY at home is that they are created in clean conditions (good manufacturing practices are followed and maintained, as well as quality assurance standards followed and adhered to), made to an exact measurement, usually by weight, not by drops.
It is a safer option to use the herb or plant extract rather than the essential oil at this stage whilst the jury is out on it all.
Most essential oils are produced for the cosmetic and food industries, not the health or healing professions. Essential oils are used to flavour thousands of food products throughout the world. You are already ingesting essential oils each and every day via these products. However, and it is a big, however, these products are using the oils in minute amounts. When we work out the ratio, they are being used in parts per million (PPM).
This is the biggest difference between ingestion and food flavouring.
The dosage is completely different.
One drop of essential oil in water or a capsule compared with one drop of essential oil in a cake that will be eaten by several people. If I cut the cake up into 12 pieces, each person may be lucky to get one twelve of a drop of the oil. If heat has been used to prepare the cake, then a lot of it would have evaporated (essential oils are volatile meaning they will evaporate readily), and each slice of cake will have considerably less than that single drop.
In summary, the ingestion of essential oils is not for the home user, but something that only should be done with the assistance of an appropriately trained professional. If you have any questions about this vast topic, please speak with your favourite aromatherapy professional.
Check out www.twenty8.com for a full range of organic, pure, high grade essential oils.

SLP 47: Let Your Heart Be Your Compass with Jake Stone and Callan Krause
Monday Feb 08, 2021
Monday Feb 08, 2021
It’s not often you get to interview two young men who have been through a lot in their relatively short lives and have chosen to learn from their challenges, invested into their growth and taught themselves to let their hearts be their compass. This week we talk to an Australian Body Board Champion who endured a career-threatening serious injury and the other a Brazillian Ju Jitsu Coach who actually spent time in prison. Their openness, grace, determination and sheer love is something to behold.
“You feel uncomfortable, you don’t want to cry in front of all your friends and all your family because you feel vulnerable but you do it anyway. And I think you do that about a hundred times and then once you do that and you begin to just drop in to that vulnerability, you realise that vulnerabilities are actually your strengths.” Jake Stone
“Let your heart be your compass. And then speak your truth and face your choices around your truth. Then be ready to drop your truth if another truth resonates with you more.” Callan Krause
Jake Stone is 31 years of age, he is a Holistic Health Practitioner and a lover of life (and extraordinary bodyboarder and skateboarder) from the Sunshine Coast. Callan Krause is 28 years of age, an Integrated Movement Science and Holistic Lifestyle Coach, a Brazillian Ju Jitsu Coach and MMA fighter.
Together they run Corrective Culture https://www.correctiveculture.com and their website shows the meaning for what it is called what it is:
Corrective – designed to correct or counteract something harmful or undesirable.
Culture – the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society.
They met through Ju Jitsu and it was thanks to a video Jake shared of Paul Check’s that gave Callan a different insight into what made Jake tick. Callan went down the rabbit hole into the world of health and fitness and as a scaffolder, he knew there was more.
One of his favourite quotes was from Paul, ‘Look with your eyes and ears but let your heart become your compass’. He instantly knew he wanted more and worked in the mines to save the money to become a Chek Practitioner.
Both of these men were drawn to the spiritual path as they navigated through their twenties, something that many young men are either not aware of or not willing to look at. They both believe that everything is perfect especially to those who seek it and have been challenged for opening their hearts.
They talk about the 4 Doctors of Health: Dr Diet, Dr Quiet, Dr Movement and Dr Happy
They each talk about what they did when they got lost, what they have both done to find what lights them up and what would you do if money was no problem.
I love in this podcast the way they give advice to men older than themselves and then do the same for young men. There is wisdom in their words. There is love in their hearts and there is an incredible passion for them to help people to see their greatness and to own it.
Favourite Quotes:
Callan: “Sooner or later your health will be your number one concern.”
Jake: “Everything we see and feel is a reflection of the state of our own consciousness. Every person we attract into our lives is showing us a perception we hold about ourselves. Every feeling expressed by another mirrors a deep feeling within us. This reflection is a gift for it allows us to aware of the ways we have blocked the divine love that flows through us.”

SLP 46: Self Love Quicky – Earning Self Respect
Thursday Feb 04, 2021
Thursday Feb 04, 2021
In this week’s Self Love Quicky I invite you to think about the words ‘self-respect’ and what it means to you. How do you know when you have it? What does someone look like to you who has self-respect? How do we build a higher level of self-worth, self-love and self-respect? Discussed in my book ‘The Art Of Self Love’ I am proud to share with you my thoughts around the importance of self-respect and how you can earn, maintain and ooze its magnificent power.
Take a look around you. Think about the people you admire and look up to and ask yourself, what are the attributes they possess that you are inspired by? Is it how they talk or hold themselves? Is it the way they look? Is it their success or ability to overcome challenge? Their incredible spirit? Their kind heart?
If you are willing to identify what you find attractive in those you admire, you will see a common thread among each of these people that runs deeper than appearances and any achievements. There is often a subtle energy, an essence that you love. It’s a profound deep sense of self-respect that you can feel when you’re in their presence, and you find that you are drawn into it with ease and with love.
But again I ask, what does someone with self-respect look like?
When we look to others with admiration for who they are and what they represent, it’s often because we feel uplifted by them, or we seem to feel better reading about them, watching them, or listening to them.
Conversely, if we find ourselves competing with people, comparing ourselves to others, feeling inadequate, not measuring up, and not feeling good enough, we may not necessarily bring out the best in ourselves. Sadly, the real fallout from this often sends us down a slippery slope of self-loathing and at worst, self-destruction.
I’d like us to explore the little voice inside and begin to pay attention to what we want and what serves us so that we can build our self-esteem and self-confidence. This, in turn, leads us to the ultimate experience of self-respect and self-love.
I asked my then twenty-year-old daughter, Tayla, to explain to me what someone with self-respect looked like to her. She said, “They know who they are and never apologise for it. They won’t settle for relationships that do not serve them. They don’t seem to concern themselves with what other people think of them, and they won’t compromise their own values to fit in, they don’t gossip or judge, they look after themselves, and they care for themselves, for others, and the planet!”
Tayla nailed it. In my mind, she seemed to encapsulate self-respect beautifully. Interestingly, when I ask people in my workshops to answer this question they are not as forthcoming in their response. People tend to have to really think about it.
‘Self-respect can be defined as a feeling of confidence and pride in your own ability and worth.’
As I investigated communities that have a powerful relationship with self-respect, I found myself drawn back to my roots of growing up in New Zealand, where the Maori culture is founded on the respect for family, including respect for self, elders, the land, and of course, their culture.
The Maori word mana means power, in the literal translation. The Maori dictionary defines mana as prestige, authority, control, power, influence, status, spiritual power, charisma – mana is a supernatural force in a person, place or object. Mana is the enduring, indestructible power of the atua (God).
Maori who grow up with the belief in mana since birth automatically have the notion of respect, which, generally speaking, seems to be missing in our European-based modern culture. Tribal cultures are blessed with an innate knowing that they have a force inside each of them that is akin to the power of God, or Source, or Spirit, which leaves them free to honour themselves, each other, and the world around them as a natural expression of being alive. It’s beautiful, and while there are many ways our modern progress has added enormous value, when it comes to the greatest expression of ourselves, I believe we have a lot to learn from our Maori and Aboriginal traditions, and cultural history.
Sometimes we just need to take a breath and surrender. Trust the path that is already mapped out for us and build a relationship with the mana inside as it grows to be a present and powerful force in every aspect of our lives!
Ultimately we know that self-respect is earned and not demanded or bought. I truly believe taking on just a simple beautiful Body Boost ritual (check out Podcast Number 18) is a sure way to earn a deeper more loving respect and connection with yourself. As well as giving huge thanks and appreciation to the most important person on this planet.

“My nickname for many many many years professionally from one of my managers a lifetime ago, she said to me, ‘You are marshmallow covered steel!’ I love that! I talk very much about that ability to be a brave leader, but a brave leader with heart. So I think it’s balancing the authenticity of who we are as women and being proud of that. I think as a woman, when I sit at a board table and I’m the only woman you know, on a very senior team, I am proud of what I bring to the table. Of the diversity of thought, of the diversity of mind. I am in such awe and honour of my gut. And the feeling that I get about things that gives me the wisdom. But I’m also very conscious to make sure that I am seen to be able to deliver. I remember I had a manager who said to me, ‘Just because everybody likes you doesn’t mean you are good at what you do.’ And I said to him, ‘Well actually it’s because everybody likes me that I’m good at what I do.’ Jeanette Allom-Hill
You are going to be blown away by this week’s podcast with the one and only Jeanette Allom-Hill who is the 2020 Telstra Business Woman of the year. A podcast where this stunning woman shares her story with such vulnerability and strength, and such grace and grit. Her personal story is one of resilience and recovery and as a student of change, you will find her story moving and powerful.
Jeanette is a results-driven leader and brings years of experience in developing, designing, and executing complex Transformation initiatives.
She has worked in the private sector for over 15 years holding senior roles in Optus, NBN and Microsoft. Over the last 12 years she has dedicated her career to the public sector as a transformation expert, having held senior roles in NSW Treasury, working with the Secretary and in NSW Transport, being accountable to the Minister’s office for Customer experience.
Jeanette established and chaired the community of change professional for the NSW public sector that set the standard for government change management practice. Jeanette has also spent two years in top tier consulting with Boston Consulting Group as an advisor in implementation and sustainable change, working across multiple federal and state government organisations with senior leadership teams and ministers.
Jeanette recently held the role of Chief Operations Officer for the Sunshine Coast Council, managing just over 2,300 employees with an organisational budget of $848 million.
She is currently consulting into Federal government implementing the Australian Public Sector reforms for Prime Minister and Cabinet.
In 2020 Jeanette was awarded the Telstra Businesswomen of the Year for the Public sector and Academia She has recently accepted a consulting role with Prime Minister and Cabinet and joined the NFP charity, No More Fake Smiles, and the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s network as a member of the board.
Jeanette describes herself as a brave leader with heart who leads with grace and grit and lives a life of wholehearted job.
In the Self Love Podcast she shares her personal and professional story.
As Brene Brown says so eloquently, “Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do.”
Jeanette believes you can hold yourself back or heal yourself back together. Just stand up. Marvel at your life. Know how to respond, recover and thrive. Visualise standing in front of the fire. See the darkness, know there is light at the end of the tunnel. Make that decision and just show up.
Jeanette shares her vulnerabilities around parenting and her relationship and her work.
She said her big learning is to be kind, be a good leader, be brave with heart and keep safe.
The behaviour you walk past is the behaviour you accept.
Leadership is about being authentic and real, being brave with heart, having grace and grit and to speak up.
Brene Brown says “Integrity is choosing courage over comfort. You choose what is right over what is fun, fast, or easy. And you choose to practice your values rather than simply professing them.”
Jeanette mentions the book ‘Plan B’ by Sheryl Sandberg and quotes her, “You are not born with a fixed amount of resiliency. Like a muscle, you can build it, and draw on it when you need it.”
Her advice is to take time to heal, ask how you feel. How can you be unified as a family? Sleep in, relax, read a book. It’s ok to let yourself rest. Lean into joy. Brene Brown says, ‘Now I can lean into joy, even when it makes me feel tender and vulnerable.
Her final quote is
“Do not choose the lesser life. do you hear me. do you hear me. choose the life that is. yours. the life that is seducing your lungs. that is dripping down your chin.” ― Nayyirah Waheed
