SLP 91: Be Open To Share The Difficult Parts with Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane
Tuesday Jul 13, 2021
Tuesday Jul 13, 2021
“Everyone that’s been through something tough knows that when you’re in the thick of it, it is really, really hard to see the silver linings of what’s happening. What I’ve come to realise is that everything does happen in divine timing and for a perfect reason. And while we may not understand what that is at the time, we’ve just got to trust that, you know, it was meant to happen.”
It’s not often you get to meet a person who has the profession of being a ghost writer. This week I share with you an incredible soul who not only writes for a living but in fact supports others to share their amazing story too. You will hear Roxy’s own personal story realising she had no control over her destiny. She dreamt of a Defence Force career but very soon and very young, realised she had to learn to trust that what happens to you no matter how bad it feels, happens for a reason.
Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane completed her journalism degree and is now a ghostwriter and book coach who works closely with aspiring authors to empower them to stand up and become the changemakers they dream to be through achieving their goal of becoming an author.
Roxy knows anyone can tell their story but it’s the person who is willing to dig deeper and share the warts’n’all story that gets the true guts of a story. People will connect more and get your lessons more easily when you do.
Storytelling has been Roxanne’s bread and butter for the past 14 years with a long career as a journalist for Sunshine Coast community newspapers, the Sunshine Coast Daily, My Weekly Preview, Salt Magazine and a contributing writer for countless online magazines and several websites before transferring her skillsets into non-fiction book creation.
Her emphasis on connection to her authors and honouring the uniqueness of their stories has seen her recognised in:
2019
Finalist for Young Person of the Year in the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards.
On a national level, was a finalist in My Business Awards for Young Leader of the Year.
2020
Australian Small Business Champion Awards Finalist in the Sole Trader category.
My Business Awards for Young Leader of the Year, one of only two female finalists.
My Business Awards for B2C business of the Year.
2020
Australian Small Business Champion Awards Finalist in the Sole Trader category.
Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards Finalist in Micro/Small
With her ghostwriting services now in high demand, Roxanne is expanding her offerings to include one-to-one power coaching sessions as well as small group coaching sessions to equip writers with the tools they need to write their own books.
“I have been labelled as a chronic over-writer by many of my editors and it is a moniker that I own with pride. Why? Because it means I treat every interview as an opportunity to learn everything I can about the person I am speaking to – no matter how many words have been allocated to the story for publication. The beauty of ghostwriting books is that I am no longer confined to column space! There is potential for 30,000, 50,000 or even 70,000 words to be dedicated to each person’s story. This is my true calling, and I am loving every minute of it.”
Roxy shares some amazing highlights in her career which I know you will love. You will hear the stories that have really moved her and captivated her.
She talks about Tracy Morris and Annie Jones the founders from No More Fake Smiles who help children and their primary care givers who have suffered from sexual abuse. Although a heavy topic Roxy says it’s time for these conversations. Here is their link – https://www.nomorefakesmiles.com.au/
Roxy also shares why she thinks the Sunshine Coast has such special energy and how many amazing people are here on the Coast. There is a real sense of community and a desire to want to collaborate. Everyone is so openhearted and warm. That’s my jam!
She mentions people I have had the privilege of interviewing on this Podcast like Jeanette Allom-Hill (Show 45), Genine Howard (Show 87) and Carren Smith (Show 3) as women who truly inspire and step up and be amazing to support you to do the same.
We have an interesting conversation around why the media portrays such negativity and fear. Roxy gives us the stats and why if it bleeds it leads! And the more tragic the more clicks. She talks about how this impacts the world as we know it today. She said if you are sensitive to this kind of news it might be best to make a conscious decision to not read or consume it moving forward.
Roxy’s definition of self-love is:
Confidence really boils down to how you perceive yourself and how you see yourself. Self-love is being brave, being open and having that confidence. It is important to keep you feeling nurtured and functional. You will love her self-care rituals to fill your own tank.
Roxy interviewed me on her show The Phoenix Phenonemon here is the link: https://www.roxannewriter.com.au/s1-ep5-kim-morrison/
Roxy’s Favourite Quote:
“When it comes to life the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.” Gilbert K. Chesterton
Final tip:
When it comes to self-love it’s about giving yourself the space to allow yourself to fill your tank. Put yourself at the top of the priority list will serve you most moving forward. It will make you feel more confident and the empowerment to step up and step out to be your authentic self.

SLP 90: Self Love Quicky – Immune Boosting Tips
Thursday Jul 08, 2021
Thursday Jul 08, 2021
We are right in the throes of Winter down under, and that means it can be the time for nasty flu bugs, chest infections and colds. It also means more than ever we need to take great care of our bodies and boost our immune system. This week we discuss 6 top tips for keeping well through the colder months and which essential oils are a must-have in your home first-aid repertoire.
There is no doubt a lack of eating well, emotional stress, little exercise and not being your happy self can all contribute to challenged immunity so here are some simple but effective tips to keep you healthy and well and feeling your best.
Top 5 Winter Immune Boosting Tips
Maintain your fluids – Getting enough fluids and good hydration during the winter months can be a challenge. Maintaining hydration levels is actually imperative for good immunity, healthy digestion, skin health and feeling well. If you do not fancy drinking water then warm herbal teas are also a good idea. Sorry but coffee does not account for fluid intake!
Include quality fruits and vegetables daily – Nutrient dense foods are essential for good health. This is a good time to include lots of winter-time fruits like kiwifruit, citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruit. One of my favourite health shots when feeling run down is to chop up a clove of garlic and add a half squeezed orange then drink it as a shot. All of these foods contain natural doses of immune boosting vitamin C which is one of the superhero’s for wellness.
Take time out – There is a reason we all feel like staying in hibernating. It is crucially important to rest, take time out, relax and recharge. This slower time out is critical to help re-set our adrenal health and calm our nervous system. Using essential oils can be a wonderful tool to help you relax especially oils like lavender, marjoram, chamomile and orange.
Get good quality sleep – Healthy sleep hygiene is a vital part of staying heathy and well. It is not just the hours we spend asleep but also our bed time routine. Getting into bed before 10.30pm helps us get into the deep sleep stage and has been shown to support brain detoxification. It helps to eliminate waste and support new neuro-connections. Having healthy sleep habits and a sleep wake cycle will definitely support good immune health, mental and physical health, and believe it or not optimal gut flora.
Stay warm – Staying warm and being comfortable can help us stay in tip top condition. Whilst it might be good to go for a cold morning swim or walk, or take a cold shower to boost circulation, its important not to stay cold. A nice hot shower or warm bath can do wonders for keeping well. Adding essential oils is another amazing tool you can use.
Include top winter immune boosting foods – Blueberries, dark chocolate, turmeric, oily fish, broccoli, sweet potato, spinach, ginger, garlic, green tea, kefir, sunflower seeds, almonds, oranges, kiwifruit and red peppers are wonderful immune boosting foods to include often throughout the winter months.
The best Winter essential oils include: Patchouli, Rosemary, Black Pepper, Lemongrass, Ginger, Myrrh, Thyme, Eucalyptus, Pine, Sandalwood and Chamomile. Use in your diffuser, aroma spritz bottle and in a massage blend. Don’t forget to do some good old fashioned inhalations so you can deeply breathe in their antiseptic, antibacterial goodness too!

SLP 89: Create Beauty With A Blossoming Heart with Robbi Zeck
Tuesday Jul 06, 2021
Tuesday Jul 06, 2021
‘But we have to be kind to ourselves and have a set of daily practices if you like, that connect you back to that present self and to get us back into our flow, and I like to test for oils. Today I chose, not just for myself, but for the listeners as well, I pulled out a card for myself which is the first step to working in the aromatic kinesiology method. The oil, the card that I chose was Myrtle and it’s positive or most expanded sense of the word is ‘illuminated’ and the affirmation that we have here is ‘I create beauty and hearts blossom.’ Robbi Zeck
Robbi Zeck believes the key to loving oneself is to be fully present with oneself. And there is no doubt this woman is a true trailblazer in the wellness world, in particular in the field of aromatherapy. She has spent many years in France and loves the folklore and traditions of this ancient modality. This week we talk about how the power of plants can affect us individually and assist one another easily and effectively, all with a blossoming heart and true self-love.
It is an honour and sincere pleasure to interview Robbi Zeck a dear friend and colleague and author of the most beautiful book The Blossoming Heart and creator of Aromatic Kinesiology Method -The Aromatic Heart work that Inspires Transformation.
I love Robbi’s work on the mood enhancing benefits of essential oils for emotional health and how they affect the integration of emotional experiences is powerfully represented in each Aromatic Kinesiology workshop.
She has a unique teaching style that explores how to use essential oils to facilitate change, release unresolved stress, change patterns of belief that are no longer useful and to reframe emotional issues.
Essential oils are such strengthening companions for any healing journey and quietly influence the heart and emotional brain through the powerful effects of aromatic anchoring.
Aromatic Kinesiology is an immersive aromatic experience crafted with beauty and love, where you are fully supported to renew your relationship with yourself and your beautiful blossoming heart.
As your emotional resilience and self-confidence grows, you can live more fully and make an impact with the people, passions and purposes that matter most to you.
Like a gentle ripple passing through your heart, Robbi’s work offers a simple reminder to nourish yourself on a daily basis. Nourishment is a necessity just like love. It’s the spark that lights your heart.
With a career spanning more than 40 years as a Kinesiologist, Counsellor, Naturopath and NLP Practitioner, Robbi is also a women’s retreat facilitator, has led more than 30 exquisite retreats in Bali and is also co-founder of Aroma Tours which she established with her husband Jim Llewellyn in 1995.
As we spoke Robbi shared what was in her Diffuser which was Orange (light-hearted) May Chang (being successful) and Myrtle (to be illuminated).
We spoke about Aromatic anchoring which is very important to create change in the moment and you can also anchor that in with different acupressure points. One must do something, smell something and read something cognitively as we look at the reflections in Blossoming Heart. It brings your awareness to life in a very unique way. It creates greater clarity in the prefrontal cortex.
We talk about the magical energetic qualities of plants and their connection to our moods, feelings and emotions or even a neuro-chemical event. It’s about building resilience inside and use tools to support you through any challenge.
We have emotional intelligence, heart intelligence and physical intelligence. Our hearts are magnetic, and they attract us to people, experiences and opportunities. When we smell something the part of the brain that recognises the aroma is closely linked to our emotions.
We speak about creating deeper conversations with self and others. This can stir us up a little but can also lead you to the path of beautiful possibility. We also know that emotions are stored in the body. Everything is stored in the subconscious.
How can I be a better version of me is something we can ask ourselves and combining that with the power of plants we can follow our heart into being the best we can be.
We discuss Robbi’s beautiful book ‘A Blossoming Heart’ in detail and if you would love to get your own copy the link to her website is below. And we talk about the beautiful tours she and her husband Jim Llewellyn have been leading to Europe for the past 25 years.
We take a deep dive conversation into the ancient tradition of aromatherapy and how plants play such a very special part in our lives. We see magnificent potentiality in plants which can be mirrored in us as well. There is a lot of harmonisations that comes through our plant world. It’s when we don’t take care of ourselves that we may not be listening to our hearts desire, that we may need them even more.
We discuss our innate ability to heal and how powerful essential oils can play a big part. If we can tap into that reservoir of positive habit changing it can be very liberating, ridding ourselves of limiting beliefs and heart clutter, maybe even addictive patterning and inherited emotional patterns.
This beautiful conversation will have you feeling more calm, centred and connected. Robbi discusses her work, her passions and her desire to make a difference. She talks about trusting herself and learning to love herself and others.
Be your own guide and trust yourself is something Robbi advocates. We have to be brave enough and have courage and put ourselves out there in order to create the life we love. Do something small every day to move towards your goals and use amazing essential oils to anchor you on your way.
Ask yourself how is my heart today and how will I meet me more deeply today? To do that Robbi uses her techniques of aroma-therapeutics, aromatic kinesiology and dynamic relaxation.
We talk about how hugely Covid has impacted on Robbi’s world, the struggles and the huge challenges she and her hubby have had to endure. And we discuss if there are any esoteric teachings here.
Robbi’s definition of self-love is doing rituals on a daily basis. Her love, grace and gratitude ritual is definitely one of hers. She believes that maybe we are being asked to care for the world in a very different way.
A beautiful part of this podcast is hearing Robbi talk about the power of Myrtle from her book Blossoming Heart.
The best French Apps she mentions are Rosetta Stone and Duo Lingo.
Robbi’s Favourite Quote:
“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances with our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.”
― Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth
Love, Grace and Gratitude is also part of Robbi’s creation story and is a meditation in motion that she developed and has been practising daily for more than 10 years.
If you are wanting a little inspiration and heart settling you can watch the short film she made a few years ago about Love, Grace and Gratitude and there is a free download so you can learn the movements if you so desire…

SLP 88: Self Love Quicky – The Importance Of Self Care
Thursday Jul 01, 2021
Thursday Jul 01, 2021
Most of us don’t think twice about investing time and care in our children, parents and friends but it can be a different story when it comes to self-care. Whether you are a busy parent juggling work and home-life, an aspiring business person, enjoying the benefits of retirement or just starting your path into adulthood, the chances are you still have a bit to learn about self-care. Self-care is the essential ingredient missing for many of us – and those who have found it are reaping the benefits with renewed vigour for life, increased vitality and a renewed sense of calmness.
Self-care is taking care of your mental, emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing. It is a practice that incorporates all of these things in a holistic way. The practice of self-care is contagious and can create a wonderful ripple effect that helps many. This is an essential step step if you are to realise all you can be.
Self-care is self-respect and that means not taking your precious body for granted. It is your most valuable resource and the best barometer for where you are at. Listen to the whispers and notice the aches and pains. Eat nutritiously, drink plenty of quality fluids and getting adequate sleep. Treat it like magic and revere it with all your being.
Nurture your mental and emotional health, embrace healthy relationships and be ok to ask for support and coaching when needed.
Make sure you invest into your health and self-care or else sickness will invest itself in you. It is a constant practice and one that should never be taken for granted. What you do today is having a wonderful effect on your future self. This also takes care of your environment and effects the planet.
And let’s not forget to honour and nurture our spiritual self. You can do this religiously if that what works for you. Or you can simply get in touch to a greater force and meaning by getting into nature.
It takes practice to look after yourself.
This is why I adore presenting my Essential Self Care Workshop. You can click here to get more information on these events run by me. I cannot recommend immersing yourself and taking advantage of learning in a beautiful environment.
And of course you can also join and be a part of my Self Love and Wellness Mentorship Program click here for more information.
Here is what many say about the Essential Self Care weekend:
‘I actually felt it was too big a commitment. I felt guilty for taking this time for me. But now I realise it was exactly what I needed for me right now. I am so happy and grateful I came.’ Rachel
‘Taking time out to nourish and nurture and embrace oneself is the kindest and most loving gift you could give yourself. This is a reminder to fill your own cup, remind yourself about self-love, self-care and self-nourishment. It will bring all the jig-saw pieces together and remind you what a beautiful human you are.’ Carolyn
‘I will walk out of this weekend a better mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend simply because I now understand who I am and how I can take responsibility for all that happens in my life.’ Natasha
‘This has been truly restorative, informative and entertaining. My team and I have all tapped into Kim’s passion for essential oils and chemical-free living – all of which truly resonates with my own personal philosophy. Thankyou for your kindness, generosity and wisdom, I feel I have tapped into who I used to be. Thankyou.’ Dr Viv
‘This retreat is for anyone who wants to contribute more as a father, mother, brother, sister, friend, colleague and give back to the community. We have to fill our own cup first, self-care is an essential. I knew it would be an amazing weekend but it was even more beautiful than I could have imagined. In fact – it was priceless.’ Dr Adam
And if you still need convincing…
‘I knew I had potential but didn’t know how to dig deep and have confidence in myself. Your story, your workshop has shown me so much I feel unstoppable now.’
‘I was aware I needed to make changes to my lifestyle Thankyou for giving me the tools to give myself permission to focuse on myself and the tools to implement my actions.’
‘I knew it would be an amazing weekend but it was even more beautiful than I could have imagined. It was priceless.’

SLP 87: Feminine Leadership and Living In Alignment with Genine Howard
Tuesday Jun 29, 2021
Tuesday Jun 29, 2021
‘It’s more about how we are expressing ourselves. So, you could be expressing yourself or purpose through your job that you work in, or you could be expressing it creatively on the weekends. You know it’s every moment of every day, Kim. It doesn’t matter what job we do, how much get paid, it is in each and every moment if we are living in alignment and true to our purpose, that’s really where I believe the magic is and doing it consciously.’ Genine Howard
If you are an entrepreneur, or have a budding desire to be one, you are going to love this woman. Genine Howard’s inspirational approach to feminine leadership is awe inspiring. She shares her incredibly compelling story about her life and business journey and how she became a well revered entrepreneur, magazine owner and business coach. She also shares how she has overcome the extreme lows, always open to the learnings, with ease, grace and flow.
Genine Howard is a former magazine publisher turned transformational leader who teaches business-building from a combination of deep inner feminine wisdom and smart masculine strategy. Her work in the world is to teach women to reconnect and embody their inner soul wisdom to create impactful, abundant feminine empires with ease, grace (and style!).
Genine has helped many women build multiple 6-figure empires, attract soul-aligned clients with ease and create lives that are on-purpose and grounded, all in her signature style and energetic presence. Now heading up ‘The Feminine Wisdom Co’ collective of transformational leaders, products and services, Genine is leading the way in the ‘new’ way of building business empires.
In this week’s podcast, Genine shares how she and her husband Rowan, decided they would not have children, but the Universe had other plans! And after three miscarriages they realised how much it mattered to them and went on to have two beautiful souls, and how as a family they home school and drive both their businesses.
Genine gives practical go-to advice on how to take care of yourself and live your life with purpose. She also talks about how to get curious, become interested in why you get triggered over people or things and how you get to create your reality every moment simply based on your perceptions.
If she was to give any advice to her children it would be to ‘trust themselves’ through their physical and magnetic heart. Wisdom is not external, it is completely within. She would want them to know that they are perfect just the way they are.
Genine believes taking self-responsibility particularly in relationships, and instead of blaming or pointing the finger, is saying things like – ‘This is how I am feeling about this…’ Two people can have very different paradigms when we approach conversations more from this heart space and mind set.
If we can perceive through the eyes of love and so it shall be love.
Genine believes the biggest step to live in alignment is through Meditation. By quietening the human mind. If we can move from the mind and into the heart space by tuning into the frequency of love, breathing in love and receiving and breathing out love and giving.
Whilst the current world may look chaotic, there is perfection in everything. Moving from the patriarchal mindset and shaking it up so we can move into this whole new way of being. Freedom, love, openness, connection, unification… this is where peace is.
The Dalai Lama once said that the world will be saved by the western woman.
Genine could not agree more as she believes we all have this feminine power on how to change how things have been done based purely on the frequency of love. Everything is happening for a reason and for us to awaken and use this power to do what’s right, with love.
Genine talks about her passion and skill in reading the Akashic Records and how she downloads pieces of the puzzle that is information based on pure truth. It is a guided system to help reframe the past and move forward. It is innate ancient wisdom we all have access to. SLP 85: Your Exceptional Life with Marcus Pearce
Tuesday Jun 22, 2021
Tuesday Jun 22, 2021
“The word diversity has been reduced in today’s world to mean gender and race. But really diversity in its pure definition is around every single difference that you can imagine in life and how unconditionally loving you can be towards every single difference, particularly the ones at the other of the spectrum of your beliefs and views and behaviours. How compassionate can you be towards the things that you vehemently, and the people that you vehemently disagree with and continue to live your life with love?” Marcus Pearce
From smoking, drinking, workaholic, TV producer to radical, preaching, vegan health nut, this week we have the gorgeous Marcus Pearce talking openly about the pathway to health and living an exceptional life. He shares his journey from being a corporate executive to parenthood, from event organiser to best-selling author, from directing others to podcaster all with love, intelligence, enquiry and compassion.
Marcus gets us to think more openly around topics on nutrition, diversity, wellness, beliefs, values, drive, purpose and love. We talk about being hypnotised in life.
Marcus believes all of our values are an illusion, in fact we are all in the illusion of life. And what if everything we believed was wrong? He talks about our identity and how it might suit us better to let go of always being ‘right’ in fact it might be better to be wrong. It allows you to have a more diverse and wider experience of the world.
As a father, Marcus does not want his children to feel shackled by his own thoughts and beliefs, he wants nothing more than for his four kids to grow up with an open mindset reminding us all to read an excerpt from the Prophet by Kahlil Gabran.
And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, Speak to us of Children.
And he said:
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.
On the topic of changing the people around us to live the way we do he is reminded of a Benjamin Franklin quote:
“Consider how hard it is to change yourself and you’ll understand what little chance you have in trying to change others.”
If only we could love people for who they are. The most loving thing we can do sometimes is the cruel to be kind or at other times let bygones be bygones. Do we really need a right and wrong? He thinks it’s important to love people for who they are and gives examples in his book of the most unforgiveable acts where forgiveness takes place.
Marcus describes the 8 parts of his Exceptional Life Blueprint that includes Life Purpose, Movement, Social Life, Nutrition, Family, Growth, Finances and Spirit.
He talks about rituals and how they have made a huge difference to his life and how they constantly change depending on his needs and wants. He insists they should be rituals for winning and that means sometimes they change. Your ritual should compliment every other part of your day.
He says the 4 cardinals mentioned in his book are: generosity, respect, kindness and helpfulness.
Marcus has been a part of The Wellness Couch for many years, he is the head of marketing and running the Wellness events with well over 4,500 attendees. He said it has taken him to Ikaria, he launched 100 Not Out Podcast which is now the longest standing podcast on the couch and now it feels it is a reason, season and lifetime. It has served a massive purpose and now the time has come to end it.
Below you will find the link to attend or get the replay of this life inspiring and wonderful platform of exceptional people. Hope to see you there.
Marcus talks about the path of detachment and the path of compassion and talks about all of our differences are what makes life so colourful.
He believes self love is loving yourself in a conscious way. Self love is everything. The soul part and life purpose part of your world. It effects every part but it is yours and yours alone. It’s about the relationship with yourself.
Make sure you get a copy of Marcus’s book on the link below too, it truly is exceptional.
Favourite quote is a Sufi prayer:
“My heart is at ease knowing that what was meant for me will never miss me. And what misses me was never meant for me.”

SLP 84: Self Love Quicky – Peppermint Oil
Thursday Jun 17, 2021
Thursday Jun 17, 2021
Peppermint oil creates a refreshing, cooling, warming and activating feeling. It has been used in many cultures for thousands of years, mainly due to its extremely useful health-promoting properties. It is an excellent digestive aid, helps with the respiratory and circulatory systems and is a fantastic anti-inflammatory and antiseptic oil and this week we look a little deeper into the benefits and qualities of this incredible oil.
On top of this peppermint is an exceptional flavour, particularly when it comes to dark chocolate and is excellent to use in the bathroom as it’s familiar aroma and taste is in most toothpastes and mouth washes. It even keeps mice, fleas and ants away. There is no doubt every home should have a bottle of this on hand.
One of my most favourite ways to use peppermint is in a footbath. Simply fill a large stainless steel bowl with warm/hot water and place 3 drops Lavender and 3 drops Peppermint into the water. Agitate the water then immerse both feet and soak for a minimum of ten minutes. Even better place a face washer at the bottom and two large marbles on top of that. Now rub your feet over them massaging any sore points and triggering as much of the sole as possible. If you add ½ cup magnesium salt to this footbath you really are giving yourself the best of best home spa foot treatments around!
Peppermint compresses are also fantastic. A cold compress on the forehead and extremities when a fever or headache is present is ideal and the perfect way to help bring comfort when unwell. Placing a warm compress on the tummy when there are digestive issues is a real winner as is a peppermint spritzer when suffering with morning or travel sickness!
One of the most common questions I get asked in relation to peppermint is ‘How safe is the toothpaste I buy with peppermint oil in it? Let’s think about everyday toothpaste… Did you know that toothpaste is not regulated as a food but as a cosmetic product? Understandably we are not meant to swallow it but we all know small amounts do trickle down the back of the throat even when we do not intend to. And most international well-known brands – particularly if they are sold into China – will definitely have been animal tested as part of their importing legislation.
The safety testing of cosmetic products is incredibly lax compared to food products and we all know there are many cosmetic brands on the market today that have well known questionable and scary ingredients. This means sadly, that the manufacturers of toothpaste can just about fill the tube with whatever ingredients look, smell, feel and taste great without ever giving a thought to our health and wellbeing.
If you ever want to check your ingredients you can suss out the Environmental Working Group safety chart http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ but for now some questionable ingredients to look out for in your toothpaste are:
Triclosan – an antibacterial agent and preservative used in some toothpastes. According to the EWG Triclosan has been shown to be an endocrine disrupter, skin irritant and can cause allergic reactions.
Sorbitol – this is a liquid that stops toothpaste from drying out. It has a laxative effect if too much is consumed.
Aspartame/Sachharin – well known sweeteners that have been linked to all sorts of problems and conditions like alzeihmers, dementia. They are considered neuro-toxins so best to be avoided at all times.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – is a foaming agent and detergent that is added to most toothpastes on the market. It has known side effects that are detrimental to the body as well as during the process of it there may be ethylene oxide which has moderate cancer risk associated to it.
FD & C Blue Dye No 2 – this so-called fun ‘stripe’ in toothpastes is most likely from a synthetic dye which are known have adverse effects including hyperactivity in children, allergic reactions and even cancer.
Fluoride – probably the most publicized ingredient of all and deserves a whole article itself but put simply fluoride is dangerous and toxic. Too much can have serious side effects including fluorosis (spotting and discoloration on teeth). The FDA now requires all manufacturers put a ‘poison warning’ on all fluoride toothpastes.
Many natural health food stores will stock quality toothpastes without these nasties. I look for chemical-free ones that and contain no parabens, SLS, added fluoride, sugar and artificial sweeteners or petrochemicals and chemical bleach. It has mild foaming, a nice mint flavour and is NOT tested on animals.
Here is a link to some natural toothpastes as recommended by Women’s Health Magazine.
If you would like to make your own toothpaste then here is a recipe you can make at home!
Homemade Toothpaste
6Tbsp coconut oil
6Tbsp baking soda
10 drops Peppermint oil
2 drops stevia
Mix all together and keep in a glass jar.
It might take a little getting used to at first but it may well be worth persisting.
If you would like to get yourself some organic Peppermint oil here is the Twenty8 one.

SLP 83: Pain Always Leads To Something Better with Tayla Morrison
Tuesday Jun 15, 2021
Tuesday Jun 15, 2021
“Like you said, ‘there are no accidents’ and I just trusted. I feel like I have always had this belief, ‘everything happens for a reason.’ So even through the heart break, even through the disappointments of careers and boys and all these kinds of things, it’s all been leading to something bigger and so I’ve just trusted that living in the moment of pain is going to lead to something better.” ~ Tayla Morrison
What an absolute honour to interview my very own precious daughter. This week we get to hear from a young woman on a mission. A woman who has lived a lot in 23 years. Tayla Morrison has always had a passion for dance and through hearing her story you will see how she has navigated the pains and joys and the highs and lows of this crazy world and how it has become a strong metaphor for her to attain her dreams.
We discuss what it was like for her to go through school, how to learn about who she was, who she could be and how other people made her feel. Her advice to parents and teenagers is liberating and so important.
We talk about how dance is a metaphor for life and how the teachings gave her freedom to aim for perfection in her own way. The ballet world can be very harsh, almost cruel, but it can also teach you resilience and self-awareness.
Tayla mentions how her teachers all supported her to find her own unique pathway. She gives thanks to the many important teachers who gave her hope, guidance, patience, love and support. From Suncoast Calisthenics to the Sunshine Coast Conservatory of Dance to the Queensland National Ballet. They all helped to build her confidence around her artistry and technique, and Tayla worked these attributes the best way she could.
One of the toughest times in her life was the realisation she had been training and dancing with a broken back. It ruptured her world and hit her hard. She talks about how this experience not only broke her but also humbled her.
After many auditions and lots of no’s Tayla learned from Li Cunxin from the Queensland Ballet who reminded her to remember that a no today does not mean a no forever.
We then talk about her Crazy Horse Audition in France and her first contract that came to fruition in Germany. BUT, then COVID hit and her dream came crashing down. Tayla shares how she pulled herself out of her rock bottom moment and where she put her energy to refuel broken heart.
Tayla shares the amazing thing that came out of COVID and where her life is now in regards to love and her career. And she talks about the big losses in her life.
She is one remarkable being… but then I know… I am biased!
Tayla’s definition of self-love is all about self-respect. Putting yourself out there, putting yourself first, loving yourself, embracing who you are, doing the right things for you, taking risks and taking opportunities, to want better for yourself.
Tayla’s favourite quote: ‘Don’t make a habit out of choosing what feels good over what’s actually good for you.’
If you would like to follow and contact Tayla you can go to her Instagram Page: trm.training
And if you would like to meet Tayla then check out the link below for the Essential Self Care Weekend on the Sunshine Coast because she will be making a guest appearance.

SLP 82: Self Love Quicky – Fab 4 In 5
Saturday Jun 12, 2021
Saturday Jun 12, 2021
How often do you find exercise a chore? A guilt-ridden ‘have to’? For some it is even a filthy word! But if we only realised just a little bit often can have huge impact on how we feel, how we look and how we age, we might get over ourselves a tad! This week I share with you my Fab 4 In 5. Just 4 exercises done everyday in just 5 minutes, after all doing a little of something is better than a whole lot of nothing!
Resistance (strength) training helps promote human growth hormone (HGH), a great anti-aging hormone that boosts new cell growth. It also helps to boost your immune system, increase strength, shape and build muscle, burn fat and tone your skin. Research to date shows you don’t have to a lot of exercise for good results but if you at least do something every day it becomes a healthy habit that you will stay in for life.
However, many are constantly pushed for time, don’t want to spend any more money, maybe don’t like gyms, yoga or pilates or maybe don’t even like to sweat! In fact, there are plenty of excuses why people don’t exercise! This is why I created the Fab 4 in 5 some 20 years ago, which is a couple of great exercises to be done each day that only take a few minutes and can even be done naked! If you have been making excuses its time to stop, get up off your butt and give it a go. Take it on for 28 days and you might just love the results!
If you are reasonably fit, then start with whatever number is comfortable, maybe 20 or 30 of each. But if you haven’t done this sort of exercise for some time, or any at all, then start with just five of each. The next day try an extra one and so on. The key to doing these four exercises and with good results, is to do them slowly. Count slowly to three on the resistance and three on the release. The release is just as important as the resistance. If you wake the next day feeling sore (lactic acid is one of the by-products of over extended muscles) then lower the number you started with and build it up more gently.
Here are the fabulous four exercises that should take you just five minutes to perform each morning. Chances are at the end of 28 days you may even like what you are doing and who knows what that might inspire you to take on next!
Sit-ups are great for toning the stomach and lower back. You should be on your back with your knees bent. Wedge your toes under a chair or bed to hold yourself secure. Place hands behind the head and lift from the stomach only. Keep arms in one position and look at the ceiling. Only lift as far as you can feel resistance and hold for three seconds, pushing a little farther each time.
Press-ups are fantastic for firming and toning the chest and shoulder areas. They can be done with your knees touching the ground. Take each one slowly, counting to three as you take your nose to the ground and counting to three again on the way up. Once you feel strong enough in the back and arms, try one or two in the full press-up position, with legs straight, increasing the number by one each day.
Tricep Dips help give shape and strength to the shoulders and upper arms. A great exercise to reduce ‘ta ta’ arms (you know, the underarm bit that wobbles when you wave to someone!). Find a stable chair or low table. Sit on the edge and place your arms at your sides with hands on the table. Take your legs out to a comfortable distance and, taking your weight on your arms, lift your bottom off the table but keep it as close to the table as possible. Slowly lower your body as far as you can go, hold, then slowly come up.
Squats are brilliant at helping tone the butt and legs. Stand with your feet at hip distance apart. Stand tall with hands on hips. Take a large step out in front of you with your right leg, bending at the knee and taking your body as low as you can go, but making sure your right knee does not go past your right foot; if it does you have not stepped out wide enough. Hold, then bring the leg back to the starting position. Repeat with the left leg.
The key is to remember to do these exercises in a controlled manner and make sure you do them at least every second day. It will only take 5 minutes and could be the best investment in your health you’ve ever made. Check out Dr Google or follow your favourite exercise experts for more exercise ideas, photos and videos on how to do them correctly.
Most importantly ENJOY!

“I really don’t know mum’s here that are loving and feeling amazing in early motherhood. I just felt like it was a very common discussion to talk about, ‘Far out I’m just so tired,’ ‘Where has my libido gone?’ ‘Where has my energy gone?’ ‘But I can’t sleep and why do I have anxiety now? I never used to have that.’ So again, possibly a little biased, but I was looking around and just going this isn’t normal, this isn’t right. This isn’t how early motherhood is supposed to be. And I started to really think about those early years of mothering and what they do to the rest of our mothering journey.”
Charmaine Newmark, is the Nourished Naturopath, an Embodied Alchemist and a teacher of earth, body and soul wisdom. This week we hear her amazing story and how she worked through her break down after believing success was doing all the things to tick the boxes of the perfect super woman. And even though this was her darkest moment it was also the greatest catalyst for a bigger awakening which has since became her super-power.
With a deep passion for reconnecting women, to the innate wisdom of our bodies and our world, she has an intuitive visual reference for what life would of been like, long before we were told ‘what healthy should be’, before the busy and before the technology.
Charmaine is on a mission to change the narratives of challenging times, to empower the next generation of women and to remind us, what it can feel like to live in this modern world, yet still remain anchored in the innate way of being, our bodies where designed to live amongst.
Charmaine’s own health journey, took her on a healing process of the gut and the mind, as she navigated recovery from depression, anxiety and chronic fatigue which she now sees as one of her greatest awakenings, and greatest teachers. She has helped open the doors of healing for many women recovering from mental health and gut health challenges and loves to practise the simplicities of healing with plants, energy and love.
Slowing down, breathing open life and finding safety and joy in the body, have been Charmaine’s greatest teachers as she navigated the constant growth points of health, relationship and parenting. This personal journey and wisdom, alongside her training as a Nutritionist, Naturopath and Embodied Healer, have really created a unique way of teaching and leading her family, community and her clients to greater fulfilment in their own lives, through body and soul medicine.
Charmaine suggests we all have a ‘Self Love Mirror’ where no nasty words are ever said. Intentionally look for something you can adore in that body.
You are going to love hearing Charmaine’s story, her journey through motherhood and her current pregnancy. She talks health, marriage, fears, pregnancy, family, healing and love. It is a real honour to share her with you.
Charmaine’s definition of Self Love – The ability to love yourself, radically, through all of the parts of yourself you wish could be different and that you label as ‘wrong’.
Self-love to me is seeing how everything I have created and choose for my life, has been created from trying to do the best for myself. Even the traits I don’t ‘feel’ I love.
Under the layers of self-awareness, we are always choosing yourself. We are always choosing to survive, and we are always choosing love.
Favourite quote is:
‘It’s is not bigger than you, it is you’ – Nourishing the Mother.
Those things can feel so hard to get through or to look at, are already part of you are coming from you. That profound peace that you feel when you meditate or attend a healing session, is not from outside of you, it is you. You did that. The next contraction that you don’t feel you can make it through, its coming from your body, it is you. It’s not bigger than you.

SLP 80: Self Love Quicky – Grapefruit
Thursday Jun 03, 2021

If you ever feel like you need an energy boost or that you want to rediscover your zest for life then grapefruit might just be the ‘pep’ you are after! In this week’s Self Love Quicky we talk all things Grapefruit. Perfect for winter and to help boost your immune system, Grapefruit is also one of the best oils to help detox the body and heal the soul.
You can use this exquisite oil in your diffuser or in an aroma mist as the most effective way to embrace its virtues.
Grapefruit is a cold-pressed oil extracted from the rind of the fruit. It is not only used in aromatherapy but also as a flavoring agent in soft drinks and as a fragrance component in soaps, detergents and personal care products.
This light, citrus oil has very uplifting effects. It is refreshing and revitalising and has wonderful detoxifying qualities – both mentally and emotionally. This can be particularly beneficial in the work place where deadlines can be pressing and demands may be high.
It is the oil to help focus on life’s positives and is one of the best oils to help nourish the soul and inspire the heart.
With well-regarded therapeutic actions grapefruit is considered an antidepressant, diuretic, antiseptic, disinfectant and stimulant.
Combined with exercise and a clean diet you can have remarkable results using grapefruit it in a body blend with oils like juniper, cypress and rosemary. This beautiful combination can be helpful for cellulite, weight-loss and fluid retention. Just make sure you massage onto the effected areas with care and gently show your body how much you appreciate – not loathe – it.
This valuable oil is ideal for treating stress, anxiety and nervous exhaustion and is perfect for people who feel wrung out, disappointed, maybe even depressed. A great winter oil – especially when energy levels may be low – you can add one drop onto a tissue with one drop of frankincense for an instant lift. Simply tuck this tissue into your shirt pocket or bra and enjoy its aroma throughout the day.
From a skincare point of view grapefruit is particularly beneficial in helping treat conditions like acne and oily skin. Fill your bathroom sink or a small bowl with warm to tepid water, add 2 drops grapefruit, 1 drop tea tree and 1 drop lavender. Agitate the water and immerse a cotton face cloth. Gently wring out the cloth and compress onto a clean face, pressing into the skin with love and care. Repeat 3-4 times before using a natural, deeply replenishing serum or moisturizer.
An all-over body massage in the morning using 1 teaspoon of carrier oil like sweet almond or coconut and 1 drop each of grapefruit, geranium and sandalwood is a beautiful way to use grapefruit’s cooling, cleansing and detoxifying properties which can also help relieve a sluggish lymphatic system.
The important thing to remember is when we have skin conditions or health concerns it is the body’s way of communicating with us that something is not quite right. By honouring these conditions and treating them with care and high quality oils – especially beautiful grapefruit oil – we are giving the body the best chance to restore and repair.
From an emotional and mental point of view grapefruit can help to release feelings of self-doubt and frustration and it is one of the best oils to help instigate playfulness, fun and child-like wonder back into your world.
In the amazing Aroma Cards you will find the essential oil of Grapefruit is for the heart chakra and is considered a euphoric oil. It is described in 4 words as ~ Refreshing, Revitalising, Uplifting and Detoxifying.
The quote channelled for Grapefruit is:
” I recognise my self-worth and step into my power with love, grace and ease.”
