SLP 115: Time Is Of The Essence with Deb Battaglini
Tuesday Oct 05, 2021
Tuesday Oct 05, 2021
‘The older you get they tell you; you have less time. There’s less hours in the day and minutes in the hour. And it’s interesting since I have heard that, I feel that. I feel like time is of the essence and that if we are given this one opportunity to be on earth, and I have seen how short life can be, and how we should 100% embrace every opportunity and why not experience everything that is available to us. And as you have previously mentioned, being open to it. And being available to it as well. I truly believe that anything is possible.’
Deb Battaglini former bank owner, event manager and charity fundraiser shares her beautiful life story, the highs and lows and how the big challenges you go through can make you stronger. It is important to know that what you are going through that you will be ok and you will get out the other side. She knows that life is never an easy course. It’s going to have lots of different twists and turns, but it is very much how we respond to those situations that determines us. Deb appreciates we can’t always get it right, and has had to let go of perfection over the years, especially with three kids. She believes you just have to be present in that space, in that decision and at that time.
Life has come full circle for this special soul I have known for over 15years. Born and raised in Canberra Debbie Battaglini moved a lot as a young woman. She has lived in Melbourne and NZ and now calls Queensland her home.
Debbie was married to a renowned banker Laurie Clarke, for 15 years and describes him as someone, who when he spoke, you would stop and listen. Everything he said was well thought through, he was respectful, loved, gracious, intelligent, gentle and genuine. Sadly, a number of years ago dear Laurie became terminally ill and Debs whole world was shattered, leaving her with their three young children.
She remembers wondering how life could move on and thanks to an oncology nurse who pulled her aside as Laurie was near the end of his life, she gave her a piece of advice that Deb says she will never forget. Wanting to escape to Italy for 12 months the Nurse told her, that her children need stability and consistency and suggested she stay put for a bit. Debs listened and to this day is grateful for her advice.
Deb describes herself as a perfectionist and how much life has challenged her to be adaptable and willing to ride the waves.
When asked, ‘Who are you?’, Deb said a valuable lesson she took from her nomination as the Sunshine Coast Business Awards was wondering who you are when you stopped what you do? Deb says you are not the label but what you represent. First and foremost, she is a mum and even though she has always put everyone else first she has since learned the importance of taking care of herself.
Self-preservation is paramount. Having the ability to cope through things like witching hour. Put time aside for yourself no matter what.
To be a great parent she believes open communication and conversations with nothing off-limits is the best advice. Being there 24-7. She tells her kids your integrity means everything, so it is important to not be a liar. The kids might cross the line, but they know who they are and what they want to stand for. Kids jobs are to push the boundaries and our job is to pull them back into line. Equip yourself with as much information as you can and a great community.
Deb talks about her own mother and how much of an incredible woman she was. Even though she struggled with mental health issues she always seemed to be a tower of strength. Her takeaway from her mother would be that we come in on our own we leave on our own, but to show that inner strength through all things.
Deb speaks openly about the loss of her mum. When living in NZ, she got the call that her mother had taken her own life and Debs recalls how devastating it was, how tragic it was. She thanks the Universe for the work she was doing at the time around youth suicide to equip her to get through this incredibly devastating and challenging time and appreciate that perhaps there was no accident there.
She shares how to keep showing up through all challenges and that for her, family and friends are paramount through the times of struggle, and community is everything. The most important thing she can suggest on a daily basis when going through a challenging time is to get out of the house, get in the sunshine. Get that space for yourself. If you have to, get the kids out there with you, take them along, no matter what it is important to get out in the fresh air. And get someone you can trust, maybe with a medical background to regularly check in with on a fortnightly basis.
What you put out to the Universe you get back. Deb says she does not believe in bad karma she believes in the good. She believes people come into your life for a reason or season and they can serve in whatever way you need at that time. Deb also believes her beautiful new fiancé Col was hand-picked by Laurie. Col is an extraordinary man, he is calm and has a beautiful energy. And she is ever so grateful every day for this beautiful opportunity to marry again.
The Universe knows what you need and at what time and will over and over give you what you can handle. Our destiny is ahead of us, it is already mapped out she believes, and yes maybe sometimes it is the sliding doors moments and what choices you make so trust that.
Deb is blown away by how this beautiful man Col has come into her life. She believes there is always someone out there who will be your soul mate no matter what. She appreciates it is not always easy but says sometimes take your foot off the pedal and smell the roses. Sit back and enjoy life for a change. It will all be ok. It is ok every now and again it will unfold, and all is meant to be.
She talks about how tough covid has impacted on family and that travel has been pulled out from under us all. She says she has learned to create a closer connection to family. Navigating covid is a real chance to stop as it has forced us to look at things differently. It all depends on how you want to respond to things. Look at the positives and focus on ourselves. Notice what we can contribute to the life. Try and find the good in bad situations. All things shall pass.
Debs is so grateful for her networks as it is connectedness that has got them all through. When you have love in your heart and surrounding you… love is all that matters.
Her final piece of advice is to know you are enough. No matter what your current form or situation you are an amazing, beautiful human being. And regardless of what you are going through to know it will all pass.
If you have self-doubt or not good enough know that tomorrow is a new day. Never make a decision in night-time in the darkness. Make it in broad daylight when you are fully functioning. And know that you are strong enough with the love and support of those you trust. You can reach out to someone like a GP. Journal and share your thoughts. Society as a whole, shows that the majority are all good people and great listeners. Just know that you are not alone and can get through anything.
The book Debs is speaking of is ‘How To Stop Worrying and Start Living’ by Dale Carnegie. She also recommends ‘The Body Keeps The Score’ by Bessel Van der Kolk.
So to recap Debbie Battaglini-Clarke is the former Owner/Manager & Marketing Director of the BOQ Maroochydore, a multi-award-winning full-service bank – with a heart. Her roles included marketing and event managing, strategic development, finance and HR – in effect all of the business functions other than the operational aspects of banking.
Deb has enjoyed a long and varied career in business development, marketing and as a business owner. These roles have included mass media, owner of Table Toppers (an event management business), and working as the Corporate Partnerships Manager of leading children’s charities. On a personal note, she says one of her greatest achievements to date is her three beautiful children, Adison, 14 years of age and after 5 IVF attempts, her high-spirited 10 year old twins James & Sofia – the joys of my life.
Deb’s definition of Self Love is having it all but maybe not having it all at the same time. It is being 100% present in that moment, in that space. Try not to multi-task, just stay focused in the now. Time is of the essence and make every moment count.
Her favourite quote is shared in her household daily:
You get what you get, and you don’t get upset!

SLP 114: Self Love Quicky – Making Time To Read
Thursday Sep 30, 2021
Thursday Sep 30, 2021
Reading to the mind is what exercise if to the body. Most book lovers will agree that if you make reading a priority in your life, you will be amazed at what you will gain. Books can literally change your life: as you read, you grow! It is amazing though, how many people say they simply do not have time to read yet reading can open up a world of imagination; it can challenge, motivate and inspire you. Reading gets you thinking!
There are millions of books out there and any one of those has the potential to transform and enlighten your life. There is nothing better than getting lost in a great novel; such escapism does you wonders when life is busy. Favourite reads might be books that challenge us to think about how we are living our lives. Motivational real life stories, personal growth books and all books related to health and well being. There is so much to learn – it is a privilege I am sure we all never take for granted.
It has been said 15 minutes a day reading will change your life. Where do I find another 15minutes you ask? Here are a few simple suggestions:
Be selective about what you watch on television, Netflix or social media, they can all be such time wasters. Choose to read instead.
Wake up 15minutes earlier, and start your day off reading. Imagine a good positive read first thing in the morning. It could do wonders for the attitude you embrace for that day.
Schedule a 15minute break in your day to sit down and pick up that book.
A good book and a warm bath – bliss!
Maybe your job, or role as a parent or care-giver is taking up too much of your precious time? Perhaps that needs to be re-evaluated?
Books are the opposite to television: They are slow, engaging, inspiring, intellect-rousing, and creativity spurring. David Shenk.
When you think about all the books out there it can seem quite overwhelming the amount of authors who have taken the time to write a book. I personally know what it takes to write one, I know the endless hours of research and writing they take. But like completing a marathon, there is no feeling that can describe how it feels to actually accomplish writing one. I encourage any of you – if it has been a dream of yours to write a book then take the bold step and do it. Just so you know we were turned down by our first publisher for our first book but as we walked out of that meeting we decided that if Harry Potter’s author had nine rejections before she was accepted, we had at least eight to go before we would even contemplate giving up!
Look up Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane (you can hear our interview on show number 91) for ghost writing a book – https://www.roxannewriter.com.au/
Juliet Lever (you can hear her on show number 11) runs a program Birth Your Book here – https://julietlever.com/courses/
Mark Twain once said, ‘The person who does not read good books has no advantage over the person who can’t read them.’
Take advantage of the wonderful book-stores and libraries around, offering a world of knowledge and enjoyment. Or of course there is also a huge selection at places like Booktopia and Amazon online.
Try joining a book club – or start one yourself. This is a great way to learn about new books, great reads or the latest findings and share them with like-minded people. They are not a bad social activity either!!
And in the finest words of Burke Hedges, ‘Reading is like no other medium, it can transform your life in a flash, and you never know which book, at which time in your life, might be the one that rocks your world and inspires you to grow in ways you never thought possible’.

SLP 113: Tap Away Trauma and Meditate On Love with Dr Dawson Church
Tuesday Sep 28, 2021
Tuesday Sep 28, 2021
‘You need to go deal with childhood trauma, you need to deal with your adult trauma. And if you try to escape, because that’s what people did 100 years ago, 500, 1000 years ago, you would run to the convent, go to escape the troubles of the world in the monastery, go be an anchor ride, be in the desert, be in the forest, a forest hermit, get away from things. And nowadays we don’t have to. We have EFT in Doctor’s offices, we have EFT in hospitals, we have EFT in veterans centres, we have EFT doing it with people who have survived terrible, terrible events. And so clearing trauma is the first thing to do. Then, when you clear trauma, you then work on your potential, and developing a spiritual practice, developing meditation and then you start to hit the peak, the mountain top and that state of self-transcendence.’
Dr Dawson Church
Dr Dawson Church is highly motivated to not see people suffer. No matter how many people he speaks to, or presents to where so many share their stories, whilst they might look good, they may have youth, they have wealth and health and affluence, wonderful jobs and careers, they’re actually miserable.
But none of that suffering is actually objectively real, it’s all created by worry in the mind. Our brains are simply built, structurally by evolution, to worry. It’s the way our ancestors survived. And our brain defaults to worry today.
People have very little objective threat to survival yet they are often consumed with anxiety, depression and with stress… and Dawson just wants that to stop! The tools we have nowadays in psychology, spirituality, body work and movement, prove there are so many ways with a weight of scientific evidence that this stuff works.
This is a beautiful podcast where Dawson explains how to research, how to look for what you need to get through traumatic times, how to manage your emotions and what are the key elements to relax and feel more love.
Two of the greatest tools Dawson explains are the powers of EFT – emotional freedom technique and Meditation. EFT heals the trauma and. Meditation can take you to the mountain top and make you feel orgasmically divine!
The point higher than self-actualisation is actually self-transcendence. That’s where you want to be in daily meditation. But you cannot get there effectively if traumatised. This is where EFT comes in.
Clearing trauma and then moving to these peak states without trauma… and then downloading all that love and gratitude and joy is where it is at.
For a newbie Dawson recommends you use a guided meditation initially and you can do so using Eco Meditation which strings together a number of techniques in seven steps. Dawson is the founder of this work and here is the link at www.blissbrain.com where it is all free.
Dawson shares his own dark times with grace. He has learned to orient himself to that non-local mind first thing every morning. You want to get addicted to being at one with the Universe at the start of each day, he says. Dawson has had life’s fair share of problems and does not go without his own struggles. He shares one of the most traumatic stories when a fire destroyed his home and he and his wife were facing financial disaster. He shares how they bounced back and realised at the core what really matters.
In case you are wondering the EFT statement you say as you tap on the end points of the meridians that regulates them is, ‘Even though this ‘thing’ happened and this thing that happened really sucks, nevertheless I fully and completely accept myself, I love myself.’
Dawson Church, PhD, is an award-winning science writer with three best-selling books to his credit. The Genie in Your Genes (YourGeniusGene.com) was the first book to demonstrate that emotions drive gene expression. Mind to Matter, (MindToMatter.com) showed that the brain creates much of what we think of as “objective reality.” Bliss Brain (BlissBrain.com) demonstrates that peak mental states rapidly remodel the brain for happiness. Dawson has conducted dozens of clinical trials and founded the National Institute for Integrative Healthcare (NIIH.org) to promote ground-breaking new treatments. Its largest program, the Veterans Stress Project, has offered free treatment to over 20,000 veterans with PTSD over the past decade. Dawson shares how to apply these health and performance breakthroughs through EFT Universe (EFTUniverse.com), one of the largest alternative medicine sites on the web.
His definition of Self Love is the language you speak inside your head when nobody sees you or hears you and if you are able when there’s nobody there to hear you or see you and if you are able to love yourself then you can shift and grow.
Self-love is the foundation of wellness. Drop into your heart, be in your body and just immerse yourself in love. Those negative voices are there trying to help you, protect you. Tune into non-local mind where there is so much love. Self-love is at the core of everything.
Dawson’s favourite quote is from Lao Tzu.
‘If you want to waken all of humanity, then awaken all of yourself. If you want to eliminate the suffering in the world, then eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself. Truly, the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own self-transformation.’

SLP 111: Money Hurdles Are Amazing Learning Curves with Megan Wolfenden
Tuesday Sep 21, 2021
Tuesday Sep 21, 2021
“We have this expectation that life’s just all up to the right. That everything’s honky dory and we are working towards everything going properly. And fortunately I think, don’t realise in advance, that there’s going to be massive hurdles that we have to get through. And those hurdles are amazing learning curves, but they’re also about bringing us back to gratitude when we can see what’s going right in our lives.”
With three big financial hits behind her plus a life-threatening illness, Megan Wolfenden epitomises what it means to never let fear beat you. Her inspiring story where money hurdles become amazing learning curves will show you how to continuously show up and stay focussed on the end game all in honour of creating a lifetime of health, wealth and abundance no matter what.
Megan Wolfenden is an award-winning businesswoman who used to travel the world teaching people how to build their own business and reach their full potential. She is passionate about education and inspiring people to retire from their jobs and create a successful business and/or Real Estate Portfolio for themselves and their families. She is also a 2 times Amazon # 1 Best Selling Author. Her first book is called “Extraordinary You – A Woman’s Guide to Having it All”. Her second book is “Courage After Cancer”

She specializes in teaching Investment, Leadership and values-based goal setting and believes that results come through persistently and consistently working on your goals and enjoying the journey.

In this podcast you will hear Megan’s incredible resilience and persistence along with her amazing ability to keep on keeping on. We talk about money as energy, how we can come back from loss and what it means to make and lose money. We discuss the stigma around people being sticking rich, filthy rich and dirty rich.
Another great topic we go down the rabbit hole on is the association to men vs women and the relation to money. And the importance of how much is enough for your kids.
We talk about the pandemic and how it is affecting life, business and families but also our teens especially. Our kids will grow up eventually and if we do a little too much then so be it. Plus dear Megan goes into how cancer affected her life with all its’ challenges but also the gifts she took from this journey.

SLP 110: Self Love Quicky – Just Say Thankyou
Thursday Sep 16, 2021
Thursday Sep 16, 2021
Isn’t interesting when someone generously says: You look beautiful; your hair looks fantastic; nice write-up in the paper; that was very kind of you; or great job that often we give that humble knee-jerk response to avoid the compliment or deflect it toward someone else. Why is it so hard to just say Thankyou?
As a child we are taught not to show off or brag too much about our accomplishments. There seems to be this fine line between confidence and arrogance. And often this trickles well into our adult years. However, learning to stand up for yourself honestly by graciously accepting a compliment with a simple thank-you, helps remind us of our special abilities and innate creativity.
Praise is fantastic. We all love to give it. But if everyone responds the same by not accepting it, then who exactly is receiving this praise? You are probably aware of when this may have happened recently. You tell a girlfriend when you are going out how beautiful she looks. Does a typical response go something like this… Yeah pity about the boobs though; shame about the hair; not bad for cheap shop purchase; bummer about the bum underneath; wish I could have got the dress I really wanted; you look heaps better… the list is endless isn’t it!
How do you feel when she responds like this? Is she fishing for another compliment? Does she genuinely believe she does not look beautiful? Why did you even bother saying it? Wouldn’t it be nice if she just said thankyou!
The question now is how do YOU respond to compliments and praise?
It can be a hard habit to break this one so you need to become very aware of it. Just listen to conversations over the next few days and watch how people respond to a nice compliment or praise. And most importantly listen to yourself. If you can break the habit with you it may just be the catalyst to make others follow suit.
Feeling good about ourselves because of genuine praise will inspire us to freely compliment others to make them feel good too. It’s the ripple effect! And there is no doubt the positive energy that is generated can fuel many happy moments down the road – this is especially great to get us through those in-between times.
Go on… say it… next time someone says something nice about you just say thankyou!

SLP 109: Chocolate Is The Answer – with Brigid Woolnough
Tuesday Sep 14, 2021
Tuesday Sep 14, 2021
‘The business has grown organically but it isn’t without watering the flower. Like there’s… anybody who says like, ‘Oh you’re so lucky’, I just feel like that’s the most incessant insult you could pass to somebody. It’s like saying somebody’s nice. Nice is a biscuit, I don’t want to be nice. I want to be bigger than that, same for the business. I think this year’s probably been my hardest year so far and that really had to do with scale., so growing… You know COVID hit last year and lots of businesses went on the downturn, however we didn’t, we went on an upturn… because chocolate is the answer for everybody’s problems!’
Going from primary school teacher and extrovert to a stay at home mum, without adult company Brigid Woolnough decided to start making wedding cakes. With a love of people, connection and creativity this grew as she studied and fell in love with making chocolate. Selling her sweet masterpieces at the markets is where the award-winning business of Kokopod evolved. Now with huge commercial space, a team of 8, Kokopod is servicing over 300 stockists. Here is this amazing entrepreneur’s story.
Brigid has a great network which helps her to take risks, but to go to the corporate leap she believes you have to really love it. This has to be at the core. Nothing else will get you through the tough grind of working your own business.
We talk about how Kokopod has grown organically, the growing pains, the highs and lows and how Brigid likens having a business to childbirth. She knows if you can get through that you can get through anything.
Brigid has not been without mishaps, problems and challenges in being an entrepreneur. She is strong and courageous. She works hard and knows that it takes her full attention and commitment giving us some tips on how to ride these waves.
When I asked is someone wanted to start a business she suggests to look inside your own soul if you want to it. If you are integral you will build a brand of integrity. If you are a deceitful type, you will build a deceitful business. Your life becomes your brand. You have to be careful and mindful. She says to find where you belong. It is easy to choose the short cuts, but as a leader Brigid likes to be around people who grown her and stretch her. She believes it is having authenticity, courage, grace and tenacity.
There is no doubt Kokopod makes really good chocolate with a strong sense of integrity from the nose to tail approach. Brigid knows the importance of knowing where they source their ingredients to suppliers to quality to who makes the chocolate, the care and attention to sending out the product and how everyone talks about the product.
This is testament as the leader. So she says to look at yourself internally first. Ask do I have the qualities to take me far? If you don’t have the qualities can you choose to step up and into those qualities. You do not have to have it all but you can choose to step up into it.
We talk about the movie Like Water For Chocolate… and I can highly recommend you watch it noticing how evocative chocolate really is. And just quietly this was the motivating film to call our first book Like Chocolate For Women!
With a 10yr old, 6 year old and a 3 year old, we talk about Brigid’s role as a parent and former primary teacher and her beliefs around showing up for her kids and being there. She believes it is demonstrating their love as parents not only with words but actions. She likes to talk about the why’s in life and explain to the kids the importance of boundaries. She also talks about how incredibly precious their advice is when it is reflected back at her.
I ask Brigid why she does what she does. And she said it is because it feels right. She wakes up every day and knows that she loves it. Sher loves working towards something that is bigger than her. It is not about settling. Not wanting yesterday’s news. She’s in a race to the top not the bottom. Her biggest response to why she does what she does is why not? It’s worth it. It’s about multiplying it.
We give a shout out to Heidi Meyer who hosted the Pyjama Summit where Brigid and I met and discuss the key to that weekend, which was that we showed up not knowing what we were showing up for. The secret was it felt right, so we just showed up in our rawest state! We all did. Showing up to show up!
The hardest part about doing something new or uncomfortable is getting there. It’s the same for any new circumstance. Every day she says you just show up. It’s a choice, it’s an action and you need to show up every day. And therefore, the good will come.
Brigid says showing up is loving ourselves.
Her definition of self-love is, You need to have a servant heart. It can’t be about anything else. It is because you want to be there. When you give you need to give it without thanks. You shouldn’t do something for something in return. Do it with a servant’s heart. Anything that you do. Your team, or your family, marriage or your kids… you are doing it because – a) it feels right, b) it seems like the right thing to do and c) it’s not about anything other than this moment in serving and showing up or giving in this moment. It is committing yourself to something with no expectations. And meeting it with no expectation. It’s just about stopping and being.
We talk about mother guilt… Brigid believes it’s different for everybody. Your choices impact your circumstances and your life. The things you do are to be linked to your values. Perhaps mother’s guilt is about needing to be somewhere else when you can’t be somewhere you want to be. It’s not for everyone to judge. It’s all relative. Juggling three kids is an example if they all have something on. Have to be attuned to who they are and ascertain if it is pivotal or not. Be in tune and connected to the people around you.
We are going through lots of strange times. I ask how Brigid is navigating the world right now as a business-woman and wife and mum. She is keeping to herself mainly. There are a lot of voices out there and Brigid thinks we are in a season. She is focussed on the goal of work, family and friends and staying in her lane. Keeping on the down low right now.
Brigid won an award for business in 2019. The sunshine coast has an extraordinary array of humans here and there is an incredible group of independent men and women and businesses. Brigid believes they are a cut above the rest, looking for more out of life. Being the captain of their own ships. It is an amazing part of the world for sure.
Her message on the journey of self-love. Be true to who you are and be ok with who you are. And if you are not ok then taking action to move upwards and inwards of who you would like to be. Without it you are leading a life of false opportunities. Knock down the wall and be authentic. Show up as who you are. Find your tribe and know who you are.
Her favourite quote is from Brene Brown
“Integrity is choosing courage over comfort; choosing what is right over what is fun, fast, or easy; and choosing to practice our values rather than simply professing them.”

SLP 108: Self Love Quicky – Ingredients To Avoid In Skincare & Food
Thursday Sep 09, 2021
Thursday Sep 09, 2021
With 84,000 chemicals listed as being legally safe to use in food, drugs and cosmetics – yet most of them are seen as questionable – it’s hard to imagine what they are used for and how they came to being considered acceptable in the first place? When you realise most of these ingredients are described as having health concerns for example they are carcinogenic, skin sensitive or endocrine disrupting, it its even more disturbing to imagine how they get to stay on the market.
Understanding labels on your personal care products, cosmetics and packaged foods seems like you need a science and chemistry degree. And you are not wrong. It is one of the most confusing and sometimes scary challenges you may actually be faced with.
Think about how many times you have picked up a bottle or jar to read the ingredients label only to realize you have no idea what some of them actually are, let alone how to pronounce them? Have you ever questioned why they are even in there? What’s their point?
One of the most common answers questioning safety is, ‘They wouldn’t put it in there, if is wasn’t safe!’ How lovely it would be to believe that was true. Trusting everything you read, or believing manufacturers will put health before filling their pockets sadly is not a reality in the food, beauty and cosmetic industries.
I have a simple strategy when it comes to choosing products I buy. When I pick up any product I instantly turn to the ingredients label, not the nutritional label, not the marketing material but the ingredients. It only takes me a couple of seconds to determine if it is something I will buy or not. There are a number of things I look for.
With food if I see numbers – especially things like 951 (aspartame) or 621 (MSG) – or words like flavor, colour or preservative it instantly goes back on the shelf. End of story. Non-negotiable. Not bought.
Just to show you how much the context of our food is changing, in the 1960’s there were approximately 500 known food additives . Today there are over 4,500. According to Dr Sarah Lantz – author of Chemical Free Kids – the average person in the USA, UK and Australia consume on average four kilograms of chemicals a year in the form of additives and preservatives. This does not include the pesticide residues in food before processing, nor does it include the leaching of plasticisers (phthalates) into food from plastic tin-can linings and packaging.
When it comes to personal care products it is actually worse. The governing legislation is very unregulated. According to the Environmental Working Group – www.ewg.org personal care products are manufactured with 10,500 unique chemical ingredients, some of which, as mentioned above are known or suspected carcinogens, toxic to the reproductive system or known to disrupt the endocrine system. Though some companies make products that would be safe to eat, others choose to use dangerous ingredients like coal tar and formaldehyde, both human carcinogens and lead acetate a developmental toxin.
When I pick up a personal care or cosmetic product, again I look at what exactly is in it. To make it easy here are some of the things I look out for as to whether or not I will purchase it.
Check the ingredients list. The minute I see chemical words (not botanical names) I am cautious. Things like parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl and heptyl), PEG, DEA, TEA, the word parfum or fragrance, or things like benzoate, propylene glycol or sodium lauryl sulphate all of which appear regularly. If I can’t understand a name or use it in my kitchen I put it back. I also figure even if just one of these ingredients is present then the ethics of that company actually do not match mine so I will not purchase and I look for something in line with my values.
Use Additive Cards. It’s hard to remember all the chemicals and ingredients to avoid so this is a fantastic reference. You do not have to do the research but can trust we have done it for you. Get the book ‘The Chemical Maze’ by Bill Statham and ‘Chemical Free Kids’ by Dr Sarah Lantz and subscribe to Skin Deep the cosmetic safety database at Environmental Working Group – ewg.org
Divide the ingredients list on the label. It is good to divide the ingredients list into thirds. The top third usually contains 90-95% of the product. The middle third usually contains 5-8% and the bottom third is approximately 1-3%. Don’t be mistaken if something that is questionable is last. It’s still in there and no one knows the long term accumulation effects of these chemicals.
Check for warnings. And look for the consequences of misuse that could be hazardous. For example all products containing halocarbon or hydrocarbon propellants such as aerosol hairsprays and deodorants must disclose the exact warning. Soaps and bubble baths will show a warning ‘may irritate skin’. Keep out of reach of children is another common one. Read them and make sure you know exactly what they are warning you about – and then decide if it is a risk worth taking.
Be aware of anything that is nature derived. If you see an ingredient like SLS – sodium lauryl sulphate – and in brackets the words – coconut derived – are present, be aware. Pure, unprocessed coconut oil is not SLS. Companies do not have to disclose what chemicals or ingredients are used to refine or process something either.
Look for the words chemical-free. And see what else the company stands for and is willing to express. Natural and organic are common phrases that can be overused or misleading. I personally have become a bit cautious of them as they do not necessarily mean what they say or say what they mean. Organic can simply mean an extra carbon molecule. Natural can mean there are some natural ingredients but both can still contain harmful and questionable ingredients. In fact a product only needs 5% of natural ingredients to call themselves natural!

SLP 107: Don’t Give A Fifty with Mel Salmond and Trish Gordon
Tuesday Sep 07, 2021
Tuesday Sep 07, 2021
“But what we’re embarking on with our podcast ‘Don’t Give A Fifty’ is to create a place for women like us who can tell their stories and also just feel like being a middle aged woman is not necessarily a time for being invisible or being uninteresting or disappearing as such.” Trish
“I don’t see my husband ever standing in front of the mirror and going oh look at me, you know, look at this, look at that and cellulite and fat stomach and blah, blah, blah. I don’t do that so much now, but I used to. They don’t do that. They don’t look at themselves like that. But we do. And it’s so destructive, like it’s so counterproductive to all this great work you are doing. Your mental health, your exercise, your discipline and your self-care ad those sorts of things. We really need to stop that in its tracks.” Mel
Trish Gordon and Melinda Salmond have been besties for over 35 years. These two amazing souls are boldly and bravely speaking openly about the transitioning into mid-life. And like all good friends they decided to share the journey and launched a podcast! This is a podcast for midlife women looking for a weekly hangout with two regular 50ishers who aren’t prepared to put on the handbrake just yet. Remember, fifty is the youth of old age so let’s cut the crap, be who we are and enjoy the ride together!
We talk all about the transition for kids leaving home, the empty nest syndrome, being at the mercy of a pandemic, relying on people and the feeling of being absolutely de-railed.
The realisation your kids are ok and all the angst, worry and anxiety you feel can be completely crippling to you, not your kids, they are out there living their best life. One must get your own life together and thrive as a woman again, not just a mother.
To live your best life there is a sense of needing to be in line with who you are and what your values are. To be congruent with who you think you are. Kindness is a huge factor. Treating people with curiosity and non-judgement is so important. To be generous and to feel that sense of satisfaction in all you do on a day-to-day basis.
Another important thing to live your best life is the power of self-discipline. This can really help you to live your best life.
We talk openly about aging with grace. Or at least the idea of it!! And the struggle with weight, keeping on top of your health and moving well as we age. We discuss what does body image can do to us growing up and then how it can be closely linked to self-loathing. How do we make sense of it in proportion to what actually is the problem is a big ask.
Trish talks about the emotional connection to getting shingles just a few months ago and how it made her sit still for a minute, much in the same way covid did last year. As she recovered, she questioned her health and the thought processes and how closely linked they were. The upside was this illness made her clean up her act and she is now eating more clean, real food, moving more and, as a consequence, is feeling so much more vibrant. There is always a gift even in the challenges.
Mel says the most important thing you can do to age well and be a great role model is to get up and move every day. Your kids will see you creating routines and looking after yourself. It is powerful for your body, helps with mental health, struggles with anxiety, energy, you sleep better, feel more toned and its wonderful for your own personal presentation if that’s important to you. As a fashion blogger this is closely linked with her identity.
Books mentioned in this show are:
You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay
Loving What Is by Byron Katie
Loving Wholeheartedly by Brene Brown
The Art Of Self Love by Kim Morrison
It is ok to be vulnerable and ask for help. This is why these two created their podcast. Not everyone has their shit together all the time and that’s ok. If there is one piece of advice is to know that when nothing is working for you then the bravest thing you can do isseek help.
Mel and Trish’s definition of Self Love.
Mel – I think self-love is more around self-care. I relate it to things that work for me and would recommend you establish a routine, I believe in fresh air, benefits of Vit D, to clear the mind, going for a walk, even better with a friend. Get out and do some form of exercise. Start by meeting a friend as you are less likely to cancel for someone else. Be a little kinder to yourself.
Trish – I think it is whole-heartedly accepting yourself. Loving what is. Treating yourself with compassion, curiosity and kindness. Self-love is living with kindness and vulnerability.
Favourite quotes are:
Trish:
Be curious, not judgemental.
Don’t let the wisdom of age be wasted on you. Ted Lassoo
Mel:
Adapt and overcome.
If you’re sad, add more lipstick and attach. Coco Chanel.

SLP 106: Self Love Quicky – Top 5 Essential Oils To Move Your Body
Thursday Sep 02, 2021
Thursday Sep 02, 2021
There is no doubt a happy, healthy, vibrant life includes regular movement. People who consistently exercise tend to have more energy, sleep better, have less health issues with more happy hormones running through their body. They emit a radiance that is alluring and easy to be around. Their skin tends to be clear and no matter what their age, size or hair color they appear more positive. Here are 5 of my most favourite essential oils I use to move my body!
Let’s go back a little… why is it so many people struggle to exercise on a regular basis? Perhaps the focus should be less on ‘having’ to exercise and more around appreciation. Being grateful for what the body can do, for the fact it can move. It is not until we are sick, injured or disabled that we realize how precious the ability to move actually is.
What if the next time we exercise we do it with intention, we focus on the fact the body is a beautiful temple and we honor the fact we are moving it. It’s another way of saying we are worth it. It doesn’t have to mean running a marathon or going to a one-hour gym class. Regular movement can be appreciating a gentle walk, a dance class or gardening.
Essential oils have wonderful properties that can give us a lift, a pep-up, a touch more energy and can anchor in the positive feeling exercise creates. The next time you feel the urge to move your body and give it the thanks it deserves, try any one of these 5 oils.
You can use them in a spritzer by filling a 50ml bottle with water and adding 6 drops in total, shake the bottle then spritz it around your head inhaling deeply. You can place one drop of your chosen oil on a tissue, inhale it slowly and then place it inside your top as you head out the door. You can even use them in a diffuser to create a more positive ambience or 6 drops in total in a bath with a cup of magnesium salts to ease your muscles.
Geranium is a great oil to help balance emotions and instill a sense of positivity. It helps alleviate mood swings, restore calm to the mind and body post exercise and enhance general feelings of wellbeing.
Lavender is the most versatile of all oils. It has many therapeutic properties that help calm the body and mind. Known for its ability to reduce stress and tension this can also help increase energy levels. The perfect oil to blend with peppermint after exercise, in a massage blend or bath.
Grapefruit is one of the most uplifting and refreshing oils. It helps to ease aching muscles, eliminate toxins and its powerful stimulating properties help to enhance a sense of hope, happiness and clarity. This oils is especially good with lavender and peppermint for a muscle ease blend.
Peppermint as you can see is a refreshing and uplifting oil. It is wonderful to help reduce mental fatigue and improve concentration. This oil seriously awakens the mind and senses. Adding a drop or two in your shower gel is a great way to stimulate the lymphatic system and awaken the mind.
Lemon oil is a wonderful pep-me-up oil! It is excellent in helping to relieve anxiety, which can stop you from wanting to exercise. It is refreshing, inspiring and clearing. A few drops of this onto a tissue can do wonders for a fatigued mind and stressed out body.
So here’s the goal, within the next 24hours commit to moving your body, honour the privilege and give yourself a beautiful boost using any of these oils on their own or together. Essential oils will add to a more positive exercise experience long term.

SLP 105: Phenomenal Feminine Entrepreneurs with Edwina Murphy-Droomer
Tuesday Aug 31, 2021
Tuesday Aug 31, 2021
‘It is a value question. And we do find money for the things we value. There’s no question about it. And you know as many, many years as a single mum with four kids we always at organic food. And I hear people say ‘but how did you afford that?’ Questioning that. And I said ‘well we bought all our clothes second hand in op shops and I drive an old car. The thing that I valued was the priority and I think that for the mothers that are listening they will know that if your child needs something, you find the money.’
Has hearing someone else’s story ever impacted you to such an extent that it changed your life? Edwina Murphy-Droomer had such a moment in 2018 when she travelled to the USA to attend a conference put on by her coach where she got to hear the stories of six women with phenomenal success in their business. A seed was planted and a year later her vision came true when she was invited to be on stage as one of the success stories. You will not want to miss this podcast.
Edwina originally trained in health and wellness and wanted to share her knowledge as a practitioner and health coach. It was a naturopath who helped to change the course of Edwina’s life when she was young. This pivotal moment set her on the path to become a Naturopath and she also completed Cyndi O’Meara’s Nutrition Academy program. She knew she wanted to empower women to take care of their own health and make their wellbeing a priority.
As you will hear in this interview Edwina also noticed she had always relied on other people’s opinions and insights to make big decisions. It was realising the call to be an entrepreneur herself, to do the thing she wanted most, that became a decision that took her to that conference in the USA and has been part of her success formula ever since.
Edwina has a deep understanding of what it means to truly BLOSSOM. Like many women, Edwina’s metamorphosis sprung from her darkest hour as suddenly single, broke mother with four children, to leading a full-colour life of love, prosperity and freedom.
Edwina is a powerhouse in the fields of vision building and transformation. She has supported thousands of women to create an exciting vision for the life they want to live and then provides the support and accountability to bring that vision to life.
Her own vision was huge. And to be an entrepreneur it is almost like you ‘can’t NOT’ chase your dream and do it! Being so driven and wanting to teach about nutrition and food, using the power of transformation was the starting driver, and this has grown into sharing wisdom and women’s stories. It is the vision and desire to do the things she wants to do and it being so strong that pulls her forward.
She believes that finding your passion in being in service of others and knowing how you can pass that wisdom onto other people it what can become addictive. Making a difference in people’s lives literally becomes an addiction.
Edwina has always made a difference by following her heart, and she has chosen to do the things she needs to, to make those big dreams come true.
Sitting in that audience in the USA listening to the phenomenal female entrepreneurs at that conference share their very real stories was what sparked her desire to launch something quite extraordinary herself.
She believes many women have accumulated knowledge throughout their lives. And she decided to launch the Phenomenal Feminine Entrepreneurs Summit. She had to find 21 women to share their stories. She wanted to gather these women across the world and share their stories all of which have turned out so powerful, inspiring and full of wisdom.
Anyone who listens to the interviews of this Phenomenal Feminine Entrepreneurs Summit and reads the book will experience something very unique and you will get a sense you feel a part of every story. She wants to plant the seeds of possibility into the hearts and minds of all women on the planet through these interviews.
Lovely Edwina also shares what things would mean a rich and prosperous life to her and hopes to ignite you to ask the question of yourself.
Her definition of self-love is, One of my values is responsibility. And personal responsibility, I am 100% responsible for myself, my health, my happiness. Self-love is an act of responsibility to me being the best version of myself.
Her one message of advice is that you are enough right now in this very moment. You are perfect you are beautiful. If you don’t love your life, it’s time to sit down and create a vision of what you would like your life to be. Start with yourself. Note how you are feeling. Plant your feet on the grass, look up at the sky and breathe in what mother nature has provided. Put a high vibration into your body. Listening to things that lift your vibration and create a vision for the life you want to be living.
Favourite quote is by Edwina in her book:
The truth is, your beliefs are either a ball and chain around your ankles or the seeds that bloom into a beautiful life.

SLP 104: Self Love Quicky – Celebrate the little Wins over Winter
Thursday Aug 26, 2021
Thursday Aug 26, 2021
It’s so important to take time to acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how little or small they might seem. The big monumental ones are not the only ones worth recognising. Life is a constant journey and all about what happens in between the big wins and although you have probably heard it all before, we all know, it is about the journey not just the destination.
Take a moment to realise over these cooler months that the more you celebrate your little wins, the more you get to see how much there is to be grateful for. And being grateful nurtures the neurological, mental, emotional and spiritual self. So why not…
~ Give yourself 2 minutes and body boost every morning using your favourite body boost blend
~ Turn on your Diffuser and give thanks to one simple thing you have in your life as you do it
~ Take an Aroma Mist with you in your hand bag or car and on the hour every hour stand, stretch, spritz and smile
~ Use a nourishing Face Serum every day through the colder months, say something beautiful to yourself as you do
~ Inhale your favourite essential oil slowly and make a wish
~ Give yourself a face mask and for 10 minutes do nothing but acknowledge all the little things you do well
And remember no matter how big or small:
– Your work will never be done
– Your inbox will never be empty
– Your world will never stop changing
– Your body will never be perfect
– Your desires will never end
So take a deep breath, be grateful for what you DO have and always celebrate your little WINS!
