SLP 187: The Practice Of Non-Striving with Cindy Scott
Tuesday Jun 14, 2022
Tuesday Jun 14, 2022
‘We are in this perpetual pursuit of something. And so, one of my dear friends is a Buddhist and whilst I was in treatment she said, ‘Cindy you are continually striving, when you do practice non-striving?’ And I’m like, ‘What? What do you mean? What is non-striving? Explain.’ Because I didn’t understand that concept at all and what I realised was I never practiced non-striving. I never, prior to cancer, gifted myself time to just stop and be. I did not understand the concept of being, I knew how to do. I was this high-achieving, independent, go-getting kind of chick that would make anything happen that I set my mind to, but tell me how to BE?’ Cindy Scott
A beautiful interview with the amazing Cindy Scott. Looking forward to 2020 her life felt incredibly perfect, and she was ready for an amazing year ahead. However, a massive and shocking setback with a life-threatening illness set her on a journey of questioning and what was her purpose is? What change could she affect? In the perpetual pursuit of something she came to realise the power in non-striving.
It was January 2020 and Cindy’s life was as perfect as anyone could imagine. She had recently moved to paradise, the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia and was getting married in March. She was in great shape, her annual vision board was beautifully created and beaming its shiny promises from the wall of her office.
Her business plan was done. She was set to have the best year of her life at work and play.
And then in one single moment, everything changed. She was getting her annual mammogram and ultrasound, when the sonographer said, “Cindy, you have a lump”. She lay there in disbelief. She could not accept his words.
It felt like she had already been through so much in her life … moving overseas, being bullied, losing a job, getting divorced, having her heart broken, grieving the loss of a loved one and raising her son as a single Mum.
In the span of just a few weeks she was confronted with her second diagnosis of breast cancer, undertook two surgeries, cancelled her wedding, shut down her business, commenced chemotherapy and went into self- isolation with COVID-19.
2020 year was NOTHING like the one she had envisioned!
The impact of all This would cause even the strongest among us to falter. This was huge! Any one of these events might have knocked her off track, but the complex and simultaneous experience of these events was the most profound, truly gruelling and yet, greatest gift of her life.
Cindy has learned that having moments of stillness and getting really quiet in oneself is paramount. Learn to get acquainted with self and to like oneself. Love being in your own company. Take care of oneself. Self-care is an amazing practice for self-love. She has written the book, ‘The Healing Journey’ and hopes that these kinds of conversations will help many others.
About Cindy:
Cindy Scott is Canadian born and has spent half of her life living in Australia. She has a son who has been her greatest life achievement. She is very familiar with navigating challenges and managing change; the perfect training ground to empower and enable others.
She is an author, speaker, coach and creator, passionate about women’s empowerment, leadership, resilience, emotional intelligence and well-being.
She is a multi-passionate entrepreneur utilizing her unique blend of talents and experience to empower women to see their potential, navigate life’s major transitions and take proactive steps to living a vibrant, beautiful, purposeful life.

She holds a degree and post-grad in health science and human resource management and is a certified and seasoned coach.
Her definition of Self Love is self-acceptance and loving and appreciating herself for who I am. It is about self-care and having healthy relationships, managing stress, honouring your body with good food and movement and to nurture oneself. It is honouring and loving oneself. It is having awareness of self, the good, bad and the ugly.
The stats show that one in two people will get cancer by 85years of age. Australia has the highest incidence of breast cancer in the world. One in seven women will get breast cancer, that’s 55 women a day will get breast cancer. Nutrition, movement, mindset, stress management, repressed emotions and even EMF’s and chemicals into and onto the body.
Cindy believes self-care is the greatest medicine, it is the best investment you can make in you. Let go of the guilt. Make self-care part of our regular routine.
Her favourite quote is from herself… Just do you!

SLP 186: Self Love Quicky – If I Could Change The World Poem
Thursday Jun 09, 2022
Thursday Jun 09, 2022
In this ever changing world we may feel like we need to change it further. Here is a poem I wrote reminding all of us to be the change you want to see. I hope you enjoy it.
If I Could Change The World
When I was young and free
I dreamed of changing the world
I wanted it to be perfect
But I was just a spirited girl.
As I grew older and wiser
I learned the world would not change
So my sights narrowed and shortened
And my beliefs did the same.
But something deep inside
Knew that there had to be a way
Where the vicious cycle could be broken
And that change could forge the way
So I decided with my country
I would start by changing it
I would stand more for the people
And make us feel more proud of it.
But as the time went on
I got discouraged and sick of trying
It seemed too big an ask
To keep a united spirit from dying.
In a last desperate attempt
As I reached my twilight years
I settled for changing my family
To let them see how much I cared.
But alas, all those close to me
Saw no need to change at all
It was their right to live their life their way
And experience each rise and fall.
And now I lie on my deathbed
The penny drops and I realise
If only I had changed myself
I think that would have been more wise.
All my thoughts and actions
Could have helped the next generation
On all of those around me
I could have been an inspiration.
I might have changed my family
A fuller life they could have sampled
I may have been a greater role model
Their mentor leading by example.
Imagine then the impact
If I alone had made some changes
It may have had a ripple effect
And created more healthy, loving exchanges.
Then each family could stand united
Teach pride in every boy and girl
I may have bettered our country, and who knows?
I may have changed the world…

SLP 185: It’s Not Enough To Just Imagine It with Jessica Perez-Beebe
Tuesday Jun 07, 2022
Tuesday Jun 07, 2022
‘We all know and no matter how in flow you are, no matter how in tune you are, no matter if you are on purpose, it still requires work and consistency and effort. And that has never changed. That formula has never changed in terms of creating, manifesting, whatever term you want to give it… the life that you want. It’s not enough to just imagine it, we’ve got to put the consistent actions in behind it. But going back to the question I think yes, it’s curiosity, I think yes, it is certainly creativity, I also think there’s a boldness to entrepreneurs.’ Jessica Perez-Beebe
Jessica Perez-Beebe has been an entrepreneur for the past 17 years. She has started 4 businesses from the ground up. Raised by a single teen mother it took her a while to step into entrepreneurship, even though she always had the calling to work for herself. She was the first person in her family to graduate from school, so it was a big deal for her to consider wanting more, but here is a beautiful story of someone who never gave up and was filled with hope, consistency and determination.
Jessica says entrepreneurs are creators and on reflection she can now see how far she has come following that courageous spirit. But it did not come easy. Jessica’s mum was killed in a car accident at 45 years of age when Jessica was just 27. This news understandably made Jessica hyperventilate but also in that moment of shock and pain she heard a voice that said, ‘Jessica you have to live your life now.’ It was the realisation that life can change in an instant. She quit her job and followed her heart a few months later.
Jessica is now the coach’s coach focusing on all things entrepreneurship in the health and fitness industry. She believes in the nature vs nurture story and feels there was always something inside of her that dreamed of something bigger. Even though she was raised poor in public housing, violence and food stamps and below poverty level Jessica appreciates not everyone can get out of that life.
She remembers so clearly as a child that she was not supposed to be living that life. She had ways to remove herself from the situation, which she appreciates is part of survival, but she also knew that she would not allow her circumstances to affect her future. It was only a little spark of belief and desire for something else that energetically helped to attract other things into her space and into seeking different things. She believes her upbringing helped to make her more curious, make different decisions and take more risks.
She believes it is about believing in yourself. The people, the opportunities will appear the more you believe in them. If you have even a little bit of that spark within then you may have the drive, even if you have the darker more negative moments it can be a motivator to have something different. You just have to start where you are.
Jessica says social media can paint a picture that may not be realistic or seem too easy. It is inherent in the word entrepreneur that you are a risk taker, and you are often putting yourself out there on the front line. Entrepreneurs are driven to see something through.
Her secret sauce of success is a combination of things however none of it happens without your consistent action and effort. It may not always be physical. But there has to be a consistency in your thought patterns, especially moments of discomfort. Notice your thought patterns when things are not happening as quickly as you want or when things go wrong? It is your thoughts first, i’s what you think that leads to the emotions that you feel, that then leads to what action or non-action you take.
Your emotions can affect the actions you take. How you manage your emotions will determine what you do so it’s important you take care of your mental and emotional wellbeing.
Typically, people quit when disgruntled or lose faith in themselves when consistency could ultimately get them the results they are after. When life is truly hard Jessica believes it is a choice. You can stay in that feeling. Or if you really don’t like that feeling you can change that thought. It’s that simple.
Remember it is ok to feel your feelings, they are real, they are genuine. And they are often just an automatic response that you may not have taken the time to stop and assess, is this the way I want to feel? Is this feeling going to serve me in the outcome I desire? You can decide if you are going to feel depressed for 10 minutes or 10 days or 10 months it really is a choice. The way Jessica shifts out of that thought so quickly if things are going so bad for herself is focusing on the future and that helps her to decide what her present moment can be.
Asking yourself how you would like to feel is acknowledging yourself and allows you to change the present moment. We always have power over our choices and how we are going to feel in any given moment, she says.
In Jessica’s coaching academy one of her foundational principles is that you cannot go out and coach people in anything you yourself are not doing. You do not have a business if you do not have clients. If you expect people to invest in themselves then you need to invest in yourself. Coaching holds Jessica accountable, and she knows she must walk her talk even though she knows it’s not always easy. She is constantly challenging herself in many ways and that could be to do more self-care or more down time.
There are different levels and stages throughout an entrepreneur’s life, and one must self-reflect regularly whether it is spiritual, physical, emotional, relationships or financial… it has to be a priority. People can smell the fake-ness and hypocrisy. You need a strong why to keep you at your best so you can aim to be your best.
In regards to her sporting success, Jessica never set out to be a pro athlete. When she thinks back to the beginnings, she says it is important for us all to notice when and how you get started. She shares her before and after photos and realises what a mediocre life she was living back then. She wasn’t fulfilling what her desires were.
If you are afraid of what people will think or that you will fail or not good enough, when you are stuck in this you do start to self-destruct. You may not even realise you are doing it until you reflect on it. It was noticing women who were healthier than she was, more fit that she was, that sparked a curiosity that maybe she could look that good at that age. If you are not exposed to other ways of being, then how on earth can you be called to do something different?
If you ever have a little desire, the seeds, the curiosity then know you are being called to action. Start to imagine it, visualise it more, believe in yourself then start to talk more positively and notice the emotions are more positive and therefore the actions will align. It is about doing little things every day and then the motivation will come for even bigger things. She started training at 25 years of age, got on stage at 37 for the first time and became a pro athlete at 43 years of age. She says to feel the energy of what it takes and live into it.
Realise it is doing little things every day that can equate to big results. Ask yourself what is one thing I can do today to make a difference? It could be in your body, your relationship, a business you are starting or writing a book. It all gives you the wins you might not even have imagined for yourself.
Her definition of Self Love is first and foremost taking care of yourself. We all know what it feels like to take care of ourselves whether it is the food, exercise or downtime or speaking up for yourself or not overcommitting. When you start to set boundaries and take care of yourself it is an act of self-love. Secondly it is believing in yourself and that it is possible for you. And thirdly it is about forgiving yourself. You are going to make mistakes or a fool of yourself or get it wrong or have bad days… there are so many layers to life. So, forgive yourself, laugh at yourself and you will get back in the game way quicker.
Her favourite quote is from Lao Tzu:
‘If you do not change direction, you may end up where you’re headed.’

SLP 184: Self Love Quicky – Aroma WOD’s
Thursday Jun 02, 2022
Thursday Jun 02, 2022
An Aroma WOD is a quick workout using your own body weight in a functional way with essential oils. WOD stands for workout of the day. The human body was designed to move. And there is no doubt we all feel better when we exercise, whether it is going for a run, a swim, or even a walk on the beach. Add in a few squats, lunges, sit-ups and tricep dips and you are WOD’ing!
A WOD can be done in your own home, out on the lawn, on the beach or at the park. It can be just two minutes long or up to 20 minutes maximum. The key is to make it a workout that is easily performed in the time frame you have. This in turn helps to keep up a positive, happy and healthy attitude towards moving your body and making it a ritual we embrace for life. Let’s face it, many will regret it when they find an excuse not to exercise but with a workout regime as simple as this and there is no more excuses, no more regrets. Add one more powerful dimension… essential oils!
You can listen to Show 82 – Fab4In5 – for workout ideas but here is a wonderful way to add to the feel good factor.
Smell is closely linked to our emotions and can affect the way we think and feel. To truly lock in those good feelings we have associated to exercising and to encourage the longevity of endorphin release we use our sense of smell to anchor it. A couple drops of a favourite essential oil or an essential oil blend is the most ideal and effective way to enhance the mind/body connection.
A couple of drops of your favourite oil on a tissue, a brisk body boost massage or a spritzer are all fantastic ways to incorporate essential oils into your WOD – your brand new, exciting and uplifting Aroma WOD!
For example:
Set an intention to do your workout. Have appreciation for your body. No matter how your legs look be grateful you can even attempt and complete a workout of the day. Too often we complain about how they should look when we really should be grateful for all they do!
You can look at the phenomenal oil of Neroli! Neroli is from the blossom of the Orange tree. This delicate, light, sweet aroma has very calming, tranquillising, restoring and regenerating qualities.
Physically it is excellent in skincare for dry and sensitive skins, it also works a treat on scars and broken capillaries. It is also an excellent oil for insomnia and muscle tension. Emotionally, it is beautiful to use as a calmative especially when worried. Neroli is known as the ‘Rescue Remedy’ of essential oils so it is the best oil for shock, hysteria, anxiety and depression as well as helping to manage emotional demands in our busy everyday lives. And it can help add to the euphoric feelings a workout brings.
And as a side note… this beautiful oil makes an exquisite perfume, one drop is all that is needed on the perfume points. Indulge, enjoy and never ever forget to love your legs!

‘For me chiropractic is about helping people fulfil their potential. I have, my tag line, my Northern Star, the thing that excites me about what I do, is that I truly believe that as human beings we are designed to live extraordinary lives. And that’s why I put my hands on people, and that’s why I want people to come and see me through chiropractic is to not just be out of pain which is perhaps where chiropractors choose to play the game of chiropractic, it certainly is still a part of my practice if that’s what people want. But beyond pain relief there’s prevention and beyond prevention of pain there’s performance and beyond performance there is truly fulfilling your innate potential to live an extraordinary life.’ Dr Carmen Atkinson
Growing up Carmen Atkinson was always super active, determined and deeply driven. She saw herself as a bit of a tom boy with a love of all sports. Her brother Brad had a lot of talent too, which inspired Carmen hugely. And whilst neither ever settled for mediocrity, she acknowledges that this was a gift and a curse. She has always been curious about human potential and believes that we are all designed to live extraordinary lives.
Carmen’s family were all drawn to Chiropractic care which inspired her to do a Human Movement degree which then led her into doing her Chiropractic degree. She has always had huge reverence for the human body and elite athletes and how to optimise function to optimise human performance to optimise human health and vitality.
It saddens Carmen to think people do not take care or acknowledge what they are truly capable of and the intelligence that moves through them. ‘We are an innate expression of Universal Intelligence’, says Carmen. And if people only knew that they can express themselves differently, whether it is about relationships, sleep, food or stress… it is these things that can compromise our wellbeing.
We put so much stress on our bodies and chiropractic is a wonderful way to be healthy with regular adjustments to create optimal function and a healthy nervous system. It is important to listen to the whispers with regularity.
As far as her ability to do ultra’s and becoming an incredible athlete it started for Carmen at school running a 10km run at 12 years of age. There was deep sense of pride in completing that. Those 10kms runs turned into half marathons which then became a marathon. She continuously pursued that feeling of satisfaction. And her first marathon was what drove her to understand pushing through pain to get to the opposite feeling of exhilaration and joy.
She then met someone who had run the Conrad’s Ultra. She got curious about it and ended up running in a team of four in a 100km trail run. It was her first ultra and it was this race that she realised she loved the longer stuff. The capacity to do more has been cultivating within her from this very first ultra.
A question that she was asked when all she wanted to do was quit was, ‘Will it hurt more now, or will it hurt more if you quit?’ She has since completed in over 20 ultra’s and has a huge passion for this sport.
There is no doubt in the long stuff that you go to some dark places, and you are in a constant negotiation with self. The way Carmen works through this is to constantly evaluate oneself and get curious. She uses mantras a lot and counts a lot. All strategies of mind distraction come into play. Carmen is deeply committed to her spiritual practice and says pain is inevitable, but suffering isn’t. She has learned to change her story around it. The key is to experience pain with curiosity, to lean into it and acknowledge it but work with it.
You don’t train to get to race day, so it doesn’t hurt, you train to meet it in the race. And move with a little more ease and less suffering mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
An ultra is all about training oneself for life really. We can get through tough times, and we can find our capacity and Carmen believes there is nothing that replicates life as much as running. Beyond cultivating resources for managing life and races there is this spiritual revelation that you cannot get anywhere else where we can dissolve our sense of self. Time stands still. You become this minute experience in life. You are connected simultaneously.
As Carmen has aged and become a better athlete, she has learned to prioritise her recovery. And even her training has changed as she ages. She says it is crucial as we get older to take even more care and pay attention to all aspects of training and recovery.
Carmen shares her experience of what she has considered the perfect race which she says was in July 2021. She also shares how tough it was to open her own practice some 21years ago. She was riddled with self-doubt and wondered if she had what it took. She reached out to Laurence Tham who is a chiropractic coach and business coach. Then she wondered, what if she did it her way? How could she embrace her authenticity? How could she embrace a heart-led business?
Her definition of self-love is reminding herself that she is capable of more than she can imagine. That she is a part of the divine blueprint to live an extraordinary life. She says it is always about coming back to being part of this amazing thing called human-kind, and nature remembering that it is all divinely created. Recognise it within yourself to keep going. And meet yourself with more kindness.
Her final message is to let you know that you are designed to live and be extraordinary and be mindful of the choices you make to bring that potential forward.
Her favourite quote is:
‘You never know how far reaching something you may say think or do today will impact the lives of millions tomorrow.’
Dr BJ Palmer

During this 4 year period Carmen convened the largest Chiropractic conference in Australasia, co-ordinating 1000s of delegates, Exhibitors and speakers from all over the world, delivering the latest in research, practice management and personal development to Chiropractors and their teams.
Carmen is also an avid Ultra-distance endurance athlete. Competing in her first marathon in 2005, she quickly found a passion for races that went beyond the usual marathon distance of 42.2km. Carmen has since competed in over 25 Ultramarathons and in 2018 claimed the title of the 100km Australian Trail Ultramarathon Champion. Carmen has also completed 6 Ironman Triathlons including the illustrious Kona Ironman World Championships in 2015.
In 2018, Carmen completed Australian Ultraman, a 3-day Ultra distance triathlon covering over 512km of swimming, cycling and running, a race she attempted a year earlier but crashed her bike on Day 1 resulting in face, head and hand fractures.
Never deterred by setbacks and challenges, Carmen feels 2021 was her best year of ultra-distance racing, competing in the inaugural Ultra 355 in Hervey Bay another 3 day triathlon, finishing 2nd Female as well as completing the audacious task of racing a 100mile ultra trail running event in Brisbane, finishing on the podium in 3rd place.
There are many events still on Carmen’s bucket list.
All of this has been achieved in spite of a diagnosis as a teenager with severe spinal Scoliosis and was warned that without surgery she would end up in a wheelchair.
Over the past few years Carmen has made a conscious decision to immerse herself more fully in her Yoga and spiritual practice, deepening her personal practice that has spanned 20years.
Carmen completed her 200hr Yoga Teacher Training in 2020, as well as completing a certification in Trauma Awareness Yoga and is currently completing a further 300hrs of study. As a student and teacher of Yoga, Carmen offers a unique approach that fuses her clinical perspectives as a health practitioner, with her athletic knowledge and experience, together with a reverence for the subtle energetic body and the spiritual teachings of ancient yogic traditions.
Carmen’s fundamental belief is that as human beings we have the divine blueprint to live an extraordinary life, and she is committed to helping and inspiring people to realise that innate potential.

SLP 182: Self Love Quicky – Time To Tidy
Thursday May 26, 2022
Thursday May 26, 2022
There is a lot of attention given to cleaning and decluttering lately, you only have to see Marie Kondo or shows like The Home Edit to get inspired to sort yourself! But is decluttering and sorting all it is said to be?
I love this quote from Kathleen Vohs, a marketing professor at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, that speaks to the uplifting sense that both the elimination of clutter and the bringing in of order can create:
“Clutter is very stressful on people’s psychology, and there have been a number of studies that have looked at what clutter does to people’s minds, and from that we can take the perspective that things that are tightly organized are going to have the opposite effect. If people are perhaps stressed out or somewhat exhausted from their normal everyday lives, looking at a hyper-tidy environment, a hyper-organized environment could give that sense of calm or release because it sort of suggests that all you have to do is follow the rules, and everything will be okay.”
If there’s ever a time to reduce stress and engage in tasks that give a sense of “calm or release,” it’s now. No need to wait or plan maybe this coming weekend tackle a declutter of some sort.
You know these practical reasons why tidying is good for you, but I will remind you…
– You will find it easier to locate things
– You’ll buy fewer double ups or know when things need replacing
– You may find your time management improves
– Some say you sleep better
– Creates more calm
– Tidy home, tidy mind
So are the top 6 suggestions from the cleaning queen herself Marie Kondo.
1. Prioritise tidying and make a commitment to it
2. Visualise your home or workspace exactly as you would like it to be.
3. Keep only items that spark joy. Hold them in your hand and consider the matter. Does the item give you a little thrill of joy? Is so keep it. If not, discard it.
4. Discard with gratitude. Take a moment to thank the item for its place in your life, even if it was a mistake purchase. There is still something to learn, so focus on that.
5. Tidy in the right order. According to Marie Kondo that is: clothes, books, paperwork, miscellaneous and sentimental items.
6. Tidy by category, such as books or clothes not location.
The new Netflix show ‘The Home Edit’ founders Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin say:
1. Create an “away” system to separate work from personal life.
2. Contain items mindfully and with purpose.
3. Use walls and doors when you’re short on shelf space.
4. Check your sentimental items to see if they’re still sentimental.
5. Whatever you’re organising never ever skip the edit part
The Home Edit team swears by four concrete steps in their organizing process: edit, categorize, contain, and maintain. And there’s a very obvious reason that the “edit” portion is first—it’s what sets the foundation for any space that’s transitioning into a more organized one.
Whether you’re reorganizing an area, single space, or multiple rooms, it’s important to go through each item first to make sure it actually should have a place in your home at all. Otherwise, an item you don’t even care about can take up precious square footage that could otherwise open up a room or be vacant space for more important objects.
Here are some small organization tasks that don’t require any extra products and that will make you feel better, both while you’re doing them and when they’re done:
– Clean out and organise your pantry
– Clean out your spices
– Declutter your wardrobe
– Clear out the Fridge
– Sort your stationary/dumping/junk drawer
Most of all set the time to do it and get it done! And remember…
‘Clutter is nothing more than postponed decisions.’ Barbara Hempill

SLP 181: The Journey of an Unemployable Entrepreneur with Briony Kennedy
Tuesday May 24, 2022
Tuesday May 24, 2022
‘To me, I think a born entrepreneur is someone who is pretty much unemployable. I think we are the kind of people that are 150 miles an hour. They’re all about ‘let’s do it now, let’s stub our toe, let’s get our toe in the water, make mistakes, get on with it.’ You know I have never had business plans, I’ve never had marketing plans, I’ve never had… no plans at all. It’s just all in my head and I just go, this is what we are doing and I know it will work and if it doesn’t, that’s great. I’d rather save time now just throwing everything at it and if it doesn’t work, then I can just move onto the next thing.’ Briony Kennedy
Briony Kennedy calls herself a jack -or jill – of all trades! With a background in sales and marketing, the gym industry, the car industry, animals and many other different industries, she realises there is not a lot she has not put her hand up for. She would change direction often as she got bored easily. She was not one to sit still. She calls herself a natural born entrepreneur and knows she was always like this.
Briony believes there is a certain personality type that is born an entrepreneur. She says, ‘They think a little differently’, and whilst she agrees they can be made, she does feel an entrepreneur is usually born with a certain way of being.
Briony talks passionately about how her Adorn business began. At the time she was working in makeup artistry. Colouring in is actually one of her self-care rituals still to this day as she loves colour. She got this wave and overwhelming desire to get out of her day job and wondered what she could do, so she started looking at businesses.
She came across a nail salon. She learned a hell of lot of things in this business like how hard it was to actually make money in beauty salons. She also realised there was no consistency in this industry.
This is what she discovered was the key element to success. And she knew loyalty would also help hugely, so she started a membership program which was a very successful initiative. It helped her to sell the business with ease two years later.
Whilst she was there, she recalls she had a visit from a Rep who left a business card offering her the ability to make her own products if she was ever interested.
At the time of selling this business she found out she was pregnant with twins. She was quite unwell during this pregnancy and had to take some time out. They were 6 months old when she noticed she was getting a little bored!
She thought she could start teaching make up classes in women’s homes. This was really successful but she knew she could make more money if she could have her own products. Briony knows if you don’t ask you don’t get. And if you don’t put one foot forward you will always be where you started. So, there was no harm in trying to create these products. She found the business card and made the call. Adorn was born.
It was successful to a point but back in 2008 you could only really buy makeup and skincare in store so she decided to make a website as she could not afford the fancy stands and stock and risk if it didn’t sell. It was not easy but she kept going, kept building an online website.
Over the years she has been offered the chance to go in store but one of her personal passions is around waste and she wanted to ensure she had a product that did not cause waste from the beginning.
The website was born and initially she thought she could go down the network marketing route to market her products. But she quickly realised this could not work as there were not that many Briony’s out there let alone the cost to build the website. She had to think outside the square to help people buy Adorn when they could not touch, see or feel the product. And this is where samples became her winning formula. And they are still popular still to this day. This helped with confidence, building loyalty and minimising waste.
Building Adorn cost Briony and her husband everything they had. And they did everything they could to put money into this business. They worked really hard, it was incredibly stressful and at times soul destroying. She did not understand capital investment at the beginning and just really wanted to make it work the way she saw it best. She did not go to Beauty Expos, she went to all the other expos. The Cruelty Free and Vegan expos. Anything to do with the environment and self care. This was a positive move for the brand as people loved it.
It gave customers the ability to get a quality luxury product that they did not feel guilty about using it as it is not wasteful or harmful. It has only been in the last 5 years that Adorn has become a multi multi million dollar brand. And Briony struggles to say that, given family had to buy her food at times and the debt and lack of cashflow in the earlier years was quite overwhelming.
However, no matter what, Briony knew that to give up would mean to fail.
To get through the hard times she believes it is hard to answer simply as it is very layered. She was not good at sharing how stressed she was through those years and whilst she does not advocate this approach, she knew if she was stressed and upset then what the hell would that do to everyone else. She never wanted to put her stress onto her family and worry them.
She doesn’t recommend not talking as she has lived with depression and anxiety as a result. She just could not handle creating stress for others. She admits she is quite OCD and not very patient, so now it is all about being very present and in the moment right here right now.
Do not allow your mind to wander to the past or into the future as it can be very damaging to your growth. It is very much around what can you do in this moment to fix, solve or evolve.
Nowadays she does not get too fixated or emotional on things like money and says what saved her was literally changing her mindset to being in the moment. She also says having great mentors were incredibly beneficial to her growth and success too.
A turning point for Adorn was in year 8 when the business was growing but they were on the bones of their backside. It was tough and really embarrassing and upsetting needing help from family. She kept questioning what she was doing wrong?
Her husband kept asking her why she was not the face of the brand? Briony did not feel comfortable in this role and it took a lot for her to step up as she felt the products spoke for themselves especially being:
– Highly acclaimed
– Vegan
– Refillable
– Recyclable
– Biodegradable
– An awesome company
She thought she needed models, high-end photography, magazine stories but there was no way she could afford any of that. So, she agreed to put her face to the brand picked up her phone, went into her bathroom and filmed her first tutorial.
They used this recording on their Facebook page and on the story and came up with the bi-line ‘Luxury without the guilt.’ Five years ago this was very new. And she got a lot of criticism and trolls. But these first few tutorials gave the brand a massive growth injection which turned it into a multi-million dollar brand by being a real person without any airbrushing. She admits it took a lot of blood, sweat and tears.
Briony openly shares her struggles over the years with anxiety and even tells us how she thought the people she loved would be better off without her. She didn’t want to die, she just didn’t want to exist anymore. Her message is if you are not feeling great, whatever you need to do to get well, just do it. This is why she is the ambassador for:
Beyond Blue:

Ph: 1300 22 4636
PANDA:
Web: https://panda.org.au/
Ph: 1300 726 306
Her definition of self-love is truly appreciating your body. Your body is an incredible vessel that deserves gratitude. It is about appreciating all the things you do have. You need to feed it the best food and you need to look after it in the best way. This is the most important thing you can do for you, your partner, your children… everyone. When you are happy then no one has to worry about you. Do what the hell you bloody want to do. Stop feeling bloody guilty doing things you enjoy.

About Briony Kennedy
As a beauty industry veteran and former professional makeup artist, Briony knew the importance of using good quality products with safe ingredients. So, she went the distance to make sure every ethical beauty claim by Adorn was backed by real certifications. With an unwavering commitment to her customers – her Adorners – Briony guaranteed complete transparency on all the ethically sourced ingredients in every product.
With the world choking on plastic, Briony was also determined to minimise waste, so in the year 2010 she pioneered circular beauty refill and recycle initiatives – a bold move, but a much-needed change for the beauty industry.
Briony deliberately chose to be the face of Adorn because it’s so much more than a cosmetic brand: it’s a powerful collective movement that aligns with all her values. She lives with purpose in all areas of her life, not only as an entrepreneur and environmental activist but as a mother of three boys and an advocate for mental health awareness. After the birth of her twin boys, Briony suffered debilitating postnatal depression which prompted her to help other women enduring this common mental illness. She encourages women to share their experiences of mental health and is now a proud ambassador for both Beyond Blue and Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia (PANDA).
When she’s not working on Adorn or trying to improve the world, you’ll find Briony donning colourful activewear and sipping a Dirty Chai after a KX Pilates class (or an Espresso Martini after work hours). At home she’s an enthusiastic recycler and will often go live on Facebook when she’s in the bath – called ‘Waffle time with Briony’ – chatting about products and advice with her VIP Adorners.
Above all, Briony advocates kindness – to ourselves, each other and the planet. She empowers women to look good, do good and feel good with her easy-to-follow ‘Better Beauty Tutorials’. You can also follow her personal podcast from the link below and join the conversation about beauty, babies and business – https://www.adorncosmetics.com.au/blog/category/business-beauty-babies
Her favourite quote is:
It is none of your business what someone else thinks of you.

SLP 180: Self Love Quicky – Geranium Essential Oil
Thursday May 19, 2022
Thursday May 19, 2022
If you have ever felt like life is one big emotional roller coaster or whenever you feel physically or emotionally off balance, Geranium is the number one oil to call on.
Due to its regulating effect on the nervous system it can help to relieve stress, depression, nervous tension, headaches and anxiety. Used in a bath, diffuser or spritzer the sedative yet uplifting qualities makes it an ideal choice.
It has been known to be the best oil for workaholics and obsessive perfectionists so again placing a few drops in a diffuser by the computer or in the office can also bring a sense of calm, balance and perspective.
Not too dissimilar from Lavender, if Geranium had a personality it would be described as a mother – a person who is nurturing and always ready to take care of someone! This beautiful floral aroma gives a sense of security and stability. It is said to be balancing, stabilizing, regulating and comforting.
Geranium contains geraniol making it strongly anti-viral and due its high ester content it is also considered an excellent anti-fungal oil.
Geranium has excellent healing, astringent and homeostatic properties which is why it is used in compresses and massage blends to treat wounds and bruises. It has anti-inflammatory properties making it excellent in skincare for acne, eczema and psoriasis. And it has antiseptic and cytophalactic (cell regenerating) qualities for the treatment of burns and skin conditions. You can add 3 drops to a teaspoon of coconut oil and apply to the effected area 3 times per day. It is however, recommended to be avoided topically on hypersensitive skin.
One drop of this green leafy-rose scented aroma added to your moisturizer can have a wonderful balancing action on the skin’s sebum. This can be particularly helpful for dry, oily and combination skin.
From soaps through to moisturisers, detergents and perfumes Geranium has been used throughout history for its fragrance and to promote beautiful radiant skin. Combined with jojoba oil it is excellent in helping to reduce wrinkles.
When hormones feel like they are up and down, especially during puberty and menopause, or if pre-menstrual tension is present, Geranium can help bring a whole new sense of balance and calm. In fact adding a few drops to a diffuser can be a subtle but effective way to bring relief for everyone!
When used in a spritzer with Lavender and Tea Tree, Geranium has natural insect-repellant properties. And because Geranium is a circulatory oil it is excreted through your sweat, making it an excellent oil to use in your deodorant.
One drop makes a beautiful perfume and a few drops in a bath before bed with Lavender is a wonderful way to calm the mind and body before sleep.
Versatile, fresh, balancing and uplifting, Geranium is a must-have for every home!
The Aroma Card message is this:
‘Now is my time to steady, nurture and love myself unconditionally.’

SLP 179: Being Divinely Lead with Marie Chronopoulos
Tuesday May 17, 2022
Tuesday May 17, 2022
‘I had the book ‘The Secret’ and that’s where my journey started, and I had this deep knowing. Once I went within, I just knew that I was being divinely lead. I had to trust and believe in myself, if that makes sense. When things came my way, I just put it out there. I wanted to heal myself, so for me, ok I will learn meditation. I was having conversations with people that I would not normally have, and those conversations were very empowering conversations. I would always have something to take away from it. So, I had to go away and learn those tools and since then, I mean I had to literally do a crash course because remembering I was given 12 months to live.’ Marie Chronopoulous
Marie Chronopoulos remembers watching an interview on Food Matters with myself and James Colquhoun about the power of essential oils. One thing I mention in there is the ritual of speaking softly! It made her laugh given her Greek heritage and the challenges of being anything but loud!
Raised by her father after her parents divorced became a real challenge with the gossiping and bullying. Marie had dyslexia and eventually dropped out of school at 15years of age. But there was this inner vision and belief that she could and would one day become ‘somebody’.
And she did, she became a mother of four and a beautiful career running a recruitment agency in Rockhampton. She was fit, healthy and proud of herself. Everything seemed on track.
However, one day sitting in her office in a team meeting she felt a lump on her collarbone. She made an appointment to see a Doctor and that became the start of a whole new challenging journey. She was diagnosed with a very rare cancer called Myxoid/round cell liposarcoma, or MRCLS, is one of several types of liposarcoma. Liposarcoma is a rare cancer that grows in the cells that store fat in the body. MRCLS usually grows in the arms and legs. These tumours grow slowly, and they can spread to other parts of the body.
This was devastating at the time and Marie found herself questioning everything especially where to from here? A specialist visit a few days later in Brisbane found even more devastating news. There was another primary lump in her leg and test results showed the cancer had invaded her body, it was literally everywhere.
She was told to go home and get her affairs in order. This is 1% of all cancers and within 5 years they don’t usually make it. Her response was strong and angry… she felt how dare you tell me that news. She made it her mission to heal herself.
Whilst she knows we are all going to die she was determined to make it on her terms and her other driver was the fact she had four children. The thought of them losing their mother was too much. She was determined to not let this be the diagnosis. She created a vision in her head that in 6 months time she would walk back in his office and prove him wrong. She had to arm herself with as much knowledge about this cancer and a very powerful healing journey.
Marie never understood the power of visualisation and the power of belief. She was never consciously aware she was using this super power until now. She would imagine what she wanted and really feel what it would feel like and see what it looked like.
She believes everyone has this super power.
When we worry, we are literally visualising that thought. When we get determined we are literally visualising that thought. The book ‘The Secret’ became her bible, her go to, her own cheerleader. What we think manifests and that is where we can actually manifest a new reality.
Marie thought she was fit and healthy and this news made her really go within. She had not practiced meditation back in 2008, people thought it was woohoo! The first step was she had to go within and find out who she was. She had to change her story. Breath work really helped her to become present and help with her high levels of anxiety.
She was forced to listen to herself which was so toxic. She needed to change her language and story. Exercise and nutrition was huge. She not only detoxed her thoughts, she detoxed her body, her friends, her work… everything that was toxic she had to let go of.
She had to get back to basics and strip everything away. The four pillars of health she talks about in her book are:
Diet and nutrition
Inward focus and meditation
Power of belief
Power of love
When I asked Marie how she got the cancer she said she still asks herself this. She honestly believes she probably attracted it unconsciously on some level. And she can now say she is grateful for it. With hand on heart she believes that this is her purpose. She has managed to turn something that was so devastating into something positive. It changed who she was to who she is now.
She realises the things you face they happen for a reason to stretch us, to grow. She now welcomes challenges as she sees them as an opportunity to grow. She no longer has fear around adversity anymore. The inner critic, who she has named Meraki (which means to do everything with love), is something she has become very aware of. When that voice comes up, she now has a chat and tells her everything will be fine! She believes it is important to know we can do anything.
Marie has learned how to embrace problems and see them all as challenges. The old version of Marie would have quit and seen nothing but turmoil. Now she has more tools to help her through the challenges.
She is on this incredible journey of self discovery and self enquiry. Pausing in the moment and being present. Questioning what I need right now? Marie encourages people to continuously learn tools that will serve them.
Dare To Choose chronicles Marie’s story as a cancer survivor, recounting the moments following the devastating news and the incredible life transformation that she underwent to take back control of her body and her fate, turning her disease into an opportunity to become the best version of herself she could possibly be: stronger, healthier, and more open to belief and love than ever before.
In regards to her book Marie had already seen herself writing that book and public speaking about her journey. She put pen to paper and got into this zone that is unexplainable, like a deep meditative state with no boundaries and no fears. She would write in her motel room and could not wait to get home to start writing. It was an extremely healing process.
Her friend Rose was one of the first to read it and started crying when she finished it complimenting her on writing such a moving story. That self-belief, drive, determination and taking action has been such a big part of Marie’s life.
Everything she does in life she has to back herself 100% as no one else will. Ultimately all we have is ourselves and we need to be there for ourselves.
When she was given the clean bill of health five years after the initial diagnosis she felt yes… she knew she would beat this! And she told the surgeon exactly how she wanted to feel and that she did it.
Believe it or not she then sustained another diagnosis with a lump on her pancreas. Medical staff were not sure she would make it. They have literally re-plumbed her insides. It took every resource she had to get through this. She admits there was a moment in that 5 weeks where she was so exhausted fighting for her life that she almost gave up. But again, the faces of her children came into her mind. She flipped that picture of her funeral and tapped into the emotion of what it was like to feel fit, strong and healthy and saw the best version of herself again. This is who she is today. And she has not looked back since.
Marie says be careful with the words you speak as they are so important.
Marie shares the power of visualisation with her book and now her retreats where they can learn these tools. Her first retreat is on 1st July in Hepburn Springs. It is all about self-care and unplugging from your daily life and spoiling yourself. It is about giving yourself permission to take time out. It is about relaxing, restoring and rejuvenating.
Her final message is if you are facing an adversity ask yourself what do you need? Do some self-love practices. Who do you need on your team to get through this? What tools do you need to learn? Reach out if you want someone to talk to. Get people to cheer you on no matter what you are facing.
About Marie:
Dare to choose is also a fulfilment of a personal promise. The promise to give back, reach out and lend a hand through her words to all others who might be travelling down an unexpected fork in the road. Marie’s story is your wake-up call.
After undergoing procedures to remove the tumours that were all over her body. Marie was ready and committed to embrace a better, healthier lifestyle. In this book, she guides you through the process of rethinking what you eat, the stuff you bring into your home and understanding the nutrients that you do (or don’t) feed your body. Marie guides you in relearning how to breathe by incorporating a meditation practice into your life and teaches you about exercises to strengthen core muscles and fight off the pressures of aging and the threat of disease.
The power of beliefs and love were the cornerstones of Marie’s self healing journey from the beginning of her diagnosis, and she wants you to feel moved and encouraged to believe in your own transformation as something totally possible. By giving love and being open to receiving love, you’ll be able to take steps towards your own healing journey, no matter what you are facing.
Her definition of Self Love is so many things it is taking care of yourself mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, socially and it is important to acknowledge that you are worth investing in. You need to do whatever it is to take care of you. It is not selfish. You are worth it. You are the best investment that you will ever make, more than houses or the stock market. It will carry you through and give you a very fruitful life for the rest of your life.
Her favourite quote is from: Brene Brown
‘Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love.’

SLP 178: Self Love Quicky – VAK Learning Styles
Thursday May 12, 2022
Thursday May 12, 2022
Everyone processes and learns new information differently. There are three main cognitive learning styles. VAK stands for Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic and these learning styles helps people to understand what type of learner they are. It helps us to understand what works for us best and can help us to maximise the time we spend studying or taking in information or processing what we need.
The VAK learning model divides people into three categories of learner:
Visual learners – absorb information by sight and seeing things
Auditory learners – absorb information by sound and hearing things
Kinaesthetic learners – absorb information by moving and feeling things
People predominantly learn using one style – whether visual, auditory or kinaesthetic. And even though every learner can incorporate more than one type of learning they are more likely to achieve better results and output from learning by focusing on their primary style.
VISUAL
Visual learners absorb information primarily by seeing it, or by visualising it mentally. They:
Are imaginative and can easily picture complex scenarios, images or ideas without reference
Are good at reading body language well
Recall various bits of information well and tend to have good memory if written down
Love to ‘see’ the information
Enjoy art, aesthetics and the written word
Are usually excellent at spelling
Take frequent notes
Revise well using colour coordination, mind maps and flashcards
Love to use graphs, maps, diagrams, flowcharts and written instructions
May struggle with verbal instructions
Find themselves easily distracted by visual stimuli such as sitting beside a window or being bombarded with pop-ups on a computer!
AUDITORY
Auditory learners absorb information primarily by hearing it. They:
Retain information by hearing it
Love verbal instructions and follow them easily
Prefer to be told how to do things
Summarise things out loud
Are sensitive to tone of voice, pitch and rhythm
Notice different aspects of speaking
Understand and process information by talking it through
Would rather record a lesson or lecture than take notes
Are usually very good at oral presentations
Learn better with music on, provided that it is not too distracting
Thrive in group and panel discussions
Are easily distracted by auditory stimuli such as background noise or being spoken to
KINAESTHETIC
Kinaesthetic learners absorb information primarily through movement in a physical way. They:
Love the hands-on approach to learn or for problem solving
Usually very good at maths and science
Are often physically coordinated and good at sport
Enjoy expressing themselves physically and may engage in performing arts or dance
Prefer working in groups and work better with others
Prefer to see or do a demonstration than have it verbally explained
Struggle with overly abstract or conceptual topics
Have a good sense of direction
May learn by drawing and doodling
Excel at practical subjects such as construction, cooking and engineering
May be restless or fidgety in the classroom
You can make use of these learning styles to streamline learning processes with the powerful neuroscience. And it can help us to learn more effectively and with greater enjoyment.
Whether you are a parent, teacher, educator, speaker, coach or mentor, the best way to get your information across should ideally incorporate activities that facilitate all three learning styles to cater to the needs of everyone.
For instance, reading textbooks and writing notes to satisfy visual learners, explaining a topic aloud to the class for auditory learners and practical activities for the kinaesthetic learners. If possible, combine all three styles into activities.
When it comes to your work and to ensure it is satisfying think about your dominant learning style and see if it aligns with where you are at right now.
Each preferred learning style has methods that fit the different ways an individual may learn best.

SLP 177: The Definition Of Success with Linda Ireland
Tuesday May 10, 2022
Tuesday May 10, 2022
‘It made me really good at what I did because part of my natural state of being is I’m very caring and I have a lot of empathy. And so, it made me really good at finance. And then the extra layer of what my definition of success is meant that I really showed up. And I showed up until 11’o’clock at night, 12’o’clock at night, 1am in the morning, 2am in the morning, that wasn’t uncommon for me to work crazy hours like that, and what that meant was of course was my health got eroded over time. And there was a couple of big events that happened like the GFC, that was a really challenging time, and some other big events and with each big event it just kind of jolted me into I guess this state of adrenal fatigue and the beginnings of burnout. And then one day I just couldn’t get out of bed.’ Linda Ireland
Linda Ireland found herself in a conundrum wondering who she was and what she really wanted. She championed the business world until it took its toll and with a financial degree and a number of highly successful businesses behind her the need to stop and heal took priority. She has built and sold many businesses over the years, and since retiring early, she continues to work part-time in her natural haircare company, BodFood.
In this interview we discover what has been Linda’s drivers and how she has created wealth and success. She actually starts all of her workshops now asking participants for their definition of wealth and then their definition of success. She believes these two questions are a brilliant place to start when it comes to honouring our wants and needs.
Linda believes health should be our number one priority. The day doesn’t start unless she has done her own self-care rituals like a walk on the beach, meditation and being present. She is really conscious of being her best self and after confronting her health challenges she has now realised how serious she needed to take on the advice of experts. And that included selling her business to begin her journey of healing.
It wasn’t just physical healing either there were many layers to her overall healing journey. Over four years she discovered it was way deeper than she could have ever imagined. She gradually healed the Hashimoto’s and chronic fatigue and is very aware of the power in listening to the body’s signs.
She has also come to realise how many people are experiencing the same health issues as she did. At the simplest level it is about ignoring the signs and a body in chronic stress is not good. There seems to be this expectation to work really hard and to always show up. This can also lead to overwhelm, depression and anxiety.
Linda talks about the turning points that directed her on a healing path and needing help. She also talks about the power of being a mum and leading by example. She remembers having to choose between being a serious business-woman or a yoga teacher and at the time she felt she had to abandon the yoga world. Then when her health became so compromised in the business world she realised she needed to sell this business and get back to her yoga world.
She believes there is no point worrying about things until or unless they happen. There is no need to bring it into this present moment and ruin what is happening right now.
We discuss why worrying or being busy is seen as a badge of honour. Linda tries to steer away from this now and practices being very present as often as she can. She suggests asking these two questions when challenged. 1. Is it yours? And 2. Is it serving you?
Linda shares the Conscious Initiatives programs that she offers which is about living from a conscious space in all aspects. Get out of the past or the future and ask yourself what is relevant right now? Goals are important to work out where you are going but being consciously present is even more powerful in her humble opinion.
And when you’re truly present you are connected into that higher self, be it God, soul, Universe… whatever word you would like to use. And then it is like getting into that Jetstream, into flow.
Linda has a set of choices she makes every day that are important in her life and these include.
Health
Living your true nature and purpose
And each day focus on one of these and ask what is the next obvious action you need to take to make it happen
The always connect into the part of you that wants you to be the best
It is important to Linda to continuously focus on two things… to create and contribute. And then once you learn it, it seems obvious that you would share it.
There are tips she shares around getting through the grind of life and business:
Using the tools of self-care
Being fully present
Showing up
Get present daily to that consciousness
Get next clear action to take
Seek help from coaches who have been successful in your industry
She talks about her new project BodFood.
Although impressive to read, Linda is quick to point out that her business success was far from smooth sailing. From starting so young, Linda learned the ropes of a very tough industry, made instinctively good decisions and impulsive bad ones. Long hours, burnout, chronic stress, pressure and unforeseen global events severely challenged her mental health, physical health, personal relationships, and love for life.
Linda approaches work projects in the same way that an artist might look at a canvas: life and all of its experiences are a creative process. She attributes this attitude as the key to why she achieved so much success in her career.
Linda has explored many different creative projects, from owning a yoga studio to one of the largest finance brokerages in Australia; selling one of their businesses to a listed company to running a marathon with no prior practice.
Today, Linda dedicates her working life not only to BodFood but also to sharing what she has learned in both business and quantum universes through Conscious Initiative‘s workshops. She pays forward the tools she gained through sharing stories, methods, philosophies and principles with anyone who wants to benefit from them.
Her definition of Self Love is showing up and doing your meditation and yoga. Taking that time to connect with that consciousness and take loving action to live in your true nature and purpose. And to always have deep, deep compassion for oneself.
Her favourite quote is from Pablo Picasso:
‘The chief enemy of creativity is good sense.’

SLP 176: Self Love Quicky – Using Essential Oils Safely During Pregnancy
Thursday May 05, 2022
Thursday May 05, 2022
Essential oils and aromatherapy can be a wonderful addition to your pregnancy journey. They can aid in easing morning sickness, relieving muscular aches and pains, and relieving stress and feelings of anxiousness. Aromatherapy during pregnancy can however be a controversial topic as it is topic that not many fully understand. It has been stated that ‘the use of essential oils in pregnancy is a contentious subject, especially during the vital first 3-month period.’ Whilst there is some controversy there are some simple ways that you can incorporate essential oils during this miraculous time in your life.
There are limited clinical studies addressing the safety of essential oils during pregnancy due to ethical concerns and issues of testing expecting mothers and their unborn children. Therefore, we need to rely upon what we do know about essential oils, general safety rules and toxicity data. Ask twenty aromatherapists, and you’ll most likely get twenty different responses, not because they don’t know what to use, but because there is a huge element of personal and professional risk when it comes to advising about oils during pregnancy. I believe that oil choice, toxicity, quality and therapeutic actions all need to be taken into account; however, one needs to first look at HOW the oils are being used. This makes a huge difference.
Ingestion poses a higher risk than inhalation or absorption through the skin. Ingestion of essential oils is ill advised at the best of times and even moreso during pregnancy. We advise that if you are ingesting essential oils for whatever reason, please discuss it with your primary healthcare practitioner and qualified aromatherapy practitioner. The reason ingestion of oils during pregnancy poses a higher risk is because the oils may carry across into the placenta, we just do not know in what amounts, and we do not know the effects that they can have on the developing unborn child.
Battaglia shares this insight: ‘The judicious use of essential oils together with appropriate forms of massage by a skilled therapist can help ease the discomforts of pregnancy and provide a sense of nurturing that will comfort the mother at times she is likely to be feeling rather fragile’. You might like to use Rose, Geranium, Lavender or Jasmine to help comfort and nurture yourself during this time.
A quick search of the internet about oils safe to use in pregnancy will only provide more confusion, as each list seems to vary. This is, in part, due to early data provided on essential oils and their safety related to the herb or plant and its safety. This data was then extrapolated out and assumed the same responses with essential oils. However, as Tisserand (2011) points out “proving safety in pregnancy is always a challenge”. Most people point out that it is best to err on the side of caution and not use, but this could mean we miss out on some wonderful support during the pregnancy.
Guidelines for Use
If you have had difficulties falling pregnant, have a history of complicated pregnancies or miscarriages, or trying to fall pregnant using IVF treatment, avoid using essential oils during the first trimester unless you are under the supervision of a qualified practitioner.
Dilute essential oils to 1% in a massage blend. Low dilutions are recommended because the expectant mother may experience a heightened sense of smell and find a stronger blend too overwhelming. Secondly, there is good evidence to suggest that essential oil molecules can cross the placenta and some essential oils in large concentrations may not be healthy for the baby. Conrad (2019) suggests that during pregnancy they dilution should be between 0.5% and 1%, which is 1 to 2 drops per 10mls of carrier oil.
Our sense of smell increases during pregnancy, so take time to really smell your oils before you use them. You may find one day you’ll completely love the smell of an oil, and completely dislike it the next.
Usage Suggestions
1st Trimester
A drop of Ginger or Mandarin or Peppermint on a tissue can help ease nausea. To help with your emotions, you could diffuse a drop of Lavender, Roman Chamomile and Mandarin (adhering to diffusion guidelines).
2nd Trimester
A drop or two of Sweet Orange, Lemon or Bergamot in your diffuser can help ease any tension, both physically and or emotionally.
A lovely pregnancy relaxation massage with a drop of Lavender, Neroli or German Chamomile would help bring a sense of peace and calm. Check for any allergies prior to using.
You may notice changes in your skin, try using a lovely hydrating Rose oil mist. You could use it as a toner in your skin care regime, or as part of your daily skin care ritual.
3rd Trimester
You might find your body has more aches and pains than before as you carry this baby weight. Use a compress with a drop of Frankincense to help ease the discomfort.
Sleep can be challenging during this time, so try diffusing a drop of Lavender in your bedroom for 30 minutes prior to going to sleep. Or put a drop of Mandarin and Lavender on a tissue on your bedside table. You’ll be able to smell it during the night to help relax you throughout the night. If you wake, pick it up, take a big deep breath then go back to sleep.
What oils are safe to use during pregnancy?
When diluted correctly, the following essential oils appear to be safe for use during pregnancy:
Bergamot,
Black Pepper,
Chamomile (German & Roman),
Clary Sage,
Cypress,
Eucalyptus,
Frankincense,

Ginger,

Juniper,
Lavender,
Lemon,
Mandarin,
Marjoram (Sweet),
Neroli,
