SLP 139: An Opportunity To Return To Centre with Jordan Potts
Tuesday Dec 28, 2021
Tuesday Dec 28, 2021
‘There will be a level of self-doubt that’s created in all human beings, that’s the mind. And I think along the journey, the Universe gives us opportunities to wake up and opportunities to return to centre and to really realise what’s within us. And if you’re truly to sit in peace, in silence, and think about what you could do, or who you could be, if you didn’t let all of the shit stop you. If you just let go of all the stories, let go of the opinions of others, if you just did what you truly wanted to do and went after it, you could do it.’ Jordan Potts
Jordan Potts is a remarkable soul who has been through a hell of a lot in his 28 years. High on drugs and waking up in hospital after falling ten metres out of a tree he realised that was the turning point, a second chance. It was the wake-up call of his life and an opportunity to come clean, find himself and return to centre.
In a world full of technology that is advancing in progression like never before, one of Jordan Pott’s greatest values is actually Nature and Connection. And he loves nothing more than connecting with people in person! He believes it is so important to stay as connected as much as possible and took advantage by being in person for our interview today.
He started life as a happy go lucky kid… an ENFP, a super hero! Up until 11 years of age his family felt like it was the perfect picture. Then there was that one night when his dad told him he was leaving and their parents were splitting up. He had no idea how to process the anger, guilt, frustration and shame, but these feelings had a massive impact on his life and how he chose to do things moving forward.
He went into the sport of Rugby League to quite literally break people, only the problem was he was the one that ended up being more broken. He continued to doubt his ability and self. And got to a very lost point where he did not enjoy life at all. At 16 years of age, he was overweight, lost, full of anger and shame.
He found he was drawn to some older friends which lead him to doing many different drugs and drinking all the time. Taking drugs helped him to believe he was a super-hero again full of life, partying and doing all sorts of things that lead him into a dangerous place including 3 or 4 day benders. He got to a point where he was very distracted from himself.
Jordan became dependent using drugs on the weekends to access what he believed was happiness. However, he also realised this was only temporary. He was heavily addicted to drugs and got to a point where he became a burden to many and in very toxic relationships. It skyrocketed out of control.
He woke one day to the beeps of a machine in hospital after climbing 10 metres up a tree high on drugs at a Splendour Festival. He fell badly injuring his back and having an epileptic fit. His dad was right there beside his bed as he woke.
He realised he was in trouble, that he had to rebuild his life and rediscover himself where he could simply love life again without the drugs and toxic relationships. He moved to Melbourne with the intention to do nothing but learn about the body and do it completely sober, no partying, no girls… just reading, learning and listening to podcasts for six months.
He explains how this amazing woman walked into the gym one day but did not want to be that ‘creepy trainer’ stalking on the gorgeous women in the gym. But he knew if he did not ask this woman out, he could miss the most amazing opportunity of his life to connect.
One thing led to another, and that move was his opportunity to form an amazing life-long connection with Nicola that has manifested into an incredible relationship and their first baby Indigo being born just a few months ago.
Jordan believes every single human being is born with a spark beyond the labels, beliefs and conditionings… somewhere along the way it may dim due to the experiences of life, but he says there is that potential in everyone.
As a parent he knows he cannot protect his son from scary experiences and he is well aware that self-doubt will be part of his human experience. We need not be afraid as the Universe gives us opportunities to wake up and opportunities to return to centre.
Around the right people and the right environment, you do not need a near death experience or a massive Universal call. You can truly nurture your potential and wake up to it with love.
You should put yourself first and your environment should be second largest dictator of your potential. Put yourself in environments that will really nurture and harness what is within you.
Our greatest experiences and ability to wake up is within us all and Jordan explains how he feels now as a dad wanting to protect his son and any future children he has. He says this allows each of us the ability to surrender to the ultimate life experience. What is important is creating the most safest environment he can. It is all about perspective too. As soon as we change the way we look at things the way we see things change. It’s about encouraging and embodying for himself the experiences of life. He accepts pain is inevitable. So long as he can teach his son to love himself that’s what truly matters.
Jordan says he wants to embody his beliefs. A smart person doesn’t tell you they are smart. A tough person doesn’t tell you they’re tough. A rich person doesn’t tell you they’re rich. There is no reason to tell. Just embody it.
Jordan wants to embody the things he hopes his son will experience. He also appreciates his experience of fatherhood is about allowing his own emotional experiences to unfold naturally too.
If his son is in a safe container to express his emotions and thoughts, then that would be Jordan’s greatest wish.
There is so much self-love lacking in many in this world. Confidence is an incredible skill and ability for the human experience. Confidence and Cockiness – is a very fine line but a distinct line. Confidence is when you love and believe in yourself but not at the expense of others. Cockiness is being better than because… it is about pulling others down to feel better. It is a survival state.
His definition of Self Love is almost a reminder to come back to yourself and to accept everything you have been blessed with. Your flaws your triggers your insecurities, everything that is wrong with you that makes you human as soon as you accept that, you become more full of love. We live in a society to give our love to everyone else and to help others, that’s not a lack, but it changes when you give that back to yourself. What I am not and accepting who I am. And when you release those shackles, you will find you can love others more.
When you are judging others that is an insecurity within self. Or they may be doing something outside of your values. Or you may just not vibe their vibe. Loving people you don’t think you can love is where the growth lies.
Knowing when to express parts of yourself can be key to minding yourself. Finding your true self is unpacking and expressing yourself in a safe space. Surrounding yourself with amazing people, mentors and the right culture of people who help you to see things differently. Seeing life with a different lens allows you to see a different world.
We talk a lot around the power of understanding your values and the importance of being clear on them which allows you to step into the right environment and embodying them. If you are struggling, you need to give yourself time and safe space to find your way through.
Set amazing goals, visualise what you want and then seek after people who have embodied it and go after their values beliefs and actions.
Jordan explains how they set up his amazing gym Exalto and the important values and ethos he has created to attract the right people. He wanted the gym to be a fertile place, a place for self-love and an integration of mind, body and lifestyle. If the fitness industry is all about health Jordan questions why they do not approach a more holistic approach and build all areas of a good life into the whole program.
Jordan believes it is important to look at moving towards more of what you want rather than running away from what you don’t want. Get into a place of peace and presence and then ask what you truly value.
There are so many beautiful questions in this podcast and the way Jordan answers them will give you huge and incredible insight. His experiences and level of maturity will blow you away.
He shares when he slips off the path, how important it is important to let go of what should be, but notice what is actually happening in a space of awareness. Notice how you feel, what is happening, and why? Addressing how you are behaving from a place of how you are feeling rather than judgement can be so much more helpful.
Jordan shares even being healthy can be an addiction, and noticing the expectations we place on ourselves when we have healthy rituals can be a limitation. If it ever causes a negative result through resentment, then that may need your attention and awareness.
His advice to our listener is if you are worried about someone you care about just share openly. For men to see other men come from a place of drugs, alcohol, sex, abuse, fights and all that shit, that is so fear and survival driven to then step into a place of being calm, loving and strong… powerful not forceful. It is not about telling men what they need to do, it is just giving people permission to access more love.
Love is not a common topic in an intimate way for many men, often it can be seen as queer or gay in a negative way. But it is encompassing all that can be, to let the guard down and be the beautiful example of strength, power, presence, protection and nurturing. Get back to being grateful men, men of service and enjoying their own internal world.
A beautiful podcast with a remarkable human.

SLP 138: Self Love Quicky – 5 Self-Care Tips For Christmas
Thursday Dec 23, 2021
Thursday Dec 23, 2021
As we venture towards the end of the year I not only want to thankyou for being a part of the Self-Love Podcast journey, I am hoping you will get some time to just reflect and take a moment to look at how you can get through the festive season with a loving intent for your self-care. I know some will feel exhausted and overwhelmed, some may feel alone and not so great, so now is the perfect time to assess your daily routines, build resilience and make self-care priority.
Self-care has been defined as a term described where someone takes care of their own physical, mental, and emotional health.
There are many forms self-care can take. It could be getting enough sleep or grounding yourself outside for a few minutes.
Self-care is vital for building resilience and tenacity towards the stressors in life that you can’t control. When you’ve taken steps to care for your mind and body, spirit and soul, you are able to live your best life.
Unfortunately, however, many people view self-care as a luxury, rather than a necessity. And then find they are unable to deal with inevitable challenges or problems as well as they could.
Self-care isn’t just about finding ways to relax or switch off. It’s about taking care of yourself mentally, physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. It is important to find a balance that allows you to support each of these areas. Sometimes you might need more self-care in one area to restore balance or a combination of a few to help get you back to homeostasis.
1. Physical Self-Care
You need to take care of your body if you want it to run well. There’s a strong connection between your body and your mind. When you’re caring for your body, you are caring for your mind and you will find the more you do this the more you’ll think and feel better too.
Physical self-care includes how you’re feeding your body, how much sleep you’re getting, how much physical movement you are doing, and how well you’re caring for all of your physical needs.
When it comes to physical self-care, you can ask yourself questions to see whether there might be some areas you could improve on:
Are you getting adequate sleep?
Is your diet feeding your body well?
Are you taking charge of your health?
Are you getting enough exercise?
What daily self-care rituals do you have?
Social Self-Care
Being social is key to self-care. But, sometimes it can be hard to make time for friends and family especially when life is busy.
Close connections are important for your well-being. The best way to cultivate and maintain close relationships is to put time and energy into those relationships.
The key is to figure out what you need and then build enough time in your schedule to have the ideal social life.
To assess your social self-care, consider:
Are you getting enough face-to-face time with your friends?
What are you doing to nurture your relationships with friends and family?
Mental Self-Care
The way you think and the things that you’re filling your mind with greatly influence your psychological well-being.
Mental self-care includes doing things that keep your mind sharp, like puzzles, or learning. You might find reading books or watching movies that inspire you feeds your mind.
Mental self-care also involves doing things that help you stay mentally healthy. Practicing self-compassion and acceptance helps you maintain a healthier inner dialogue or to make friends with that inner voice.
Here are a couple of questions to consider when you think about your mental self-care:
Are you making enough time for activities that mentally stimulate you?
Are you doing proactive things to help you stay mentally healthy?
Spiritual Self-Care
Nurturing your spirit does not necessarily have to involve religion. It can involve anything that helps you develop a deeper sense of meaning, understanding, or connection with the universe, source, soul or spirit.
Whether you enjoy meditating or attending a religious service, or praying, spiritual self-care is important.
As you consider your spiritual life, ask yourself:
What questions do you ask yourself about your life and experience?
Are you engaging in spiritual practices that you find fulfilling?
Emotional Self-Care
It’s important to have healthy coping skills to deal with uncomfortable emotions like anger, anxiety, fear and sadness. Emotional self-care may include activities that help you acknowledge and express your feelings regularly and safely.
Whether you talk to a partner or close friend about how you feel, or you set aside time to help you process your emotions, it’s important to incorporate emotional self-care into your life. This is where having a coach or mentor can be the best investment you ever make.
When assessing your emotional self-care strategies, consider these questions:
Do you have healthy ways to process your emotions?
Do you incorporate activities into your life that help you feel recharged?
So Why Is Self-Care Important?
Having effective daily self-care routines shows a number of important health benefits that can include:
Reducing anxiety and depression
Reducing stress and improving resilience and tenacity
Improving happiness
Increasing energy
Reducing overwhelm and burnout
Stronger relationships with others
Having a purpose in life can certainly help you to feel more connected and add years to your health and wellbeing.
An effective self-care plan should work into your life and your needs. It needs to be something created by you, for you.
As you create your self-care plan, the following steps can be helpful:
Assess your needs
Look closely at your stressors
Devise self-care strategies and create boundaries
Plan for and expect challenges
Take small steps
Schedule time to focus on your needs and honour yourself
Don’t forget the Essential Self-Care Weekend is a fantastic way to immerse yourself into better self-care routines and rituals. Check it out here: https://twenty8.com/events-and-workshops/
Merry Christmas to you my beautiful listener, I sincerely wish you and your loved ones a very special festive season and wonderful happy new year. Thank you for being on this ride with me xx

SLP 137: Peeling Back The Layers with Nikki Parkinson
Tuesday Dec 21, 2021
Tuesday Dec 21, 2021
“Our generation of women have been served up layer upon layer of diet culture, damaging diet culture information. Well-meaning relatives and friends making comments about their looks for years and years. Trashy magazines always talking about you know… picking apart a woman’s cellulite, which is a perfectly natural thing, through to the ridiculous, ‘Lose 10kgs by Saturday’ headlines. So many of us, myself included had to pick apart. Where has that all come from? Why is that what we think about ourselves? And it is layer upon layer of BS, because that’s not health, that’s not self-love.” Nikki Parkinson
If you choose work that brings you joy and your overall reason for doing it continues to bring you joy, then it is definitely worth getting up each day! In this podcast Nikki Parkinson explains how she left the safety of a career in journalism at the age of 41 to successfully branch out into unknown territory for a world in fashion and blogging. The key to her success was community and connection and allowing women to peel back the layers of BS to be themselves no matter what their age, shape or size.
Nikki says she loves to chat and loves communication and what she saw in 2008 that Facebook was just starting a business page. She knew she wanted to continue to write and communicate with her audience which is where her blog sat and the social media was the amplification of this connection and sharing. She saw the possibility of creating a community via Twitter and Facebook and it was outstanding in that time to take a chance and connect even more.
She has cultivated a community of like-minded women and it fills her cup connecting other business-women together. She believes the sharing between business women can be so rewarding and it always comes back to you.
Those who do not share may have a fear and scarcity mindset. If you help someone Nikki believes it comes back tenfold.
Every aspect of Nikki’s business is because of her community. Not everyone is going to like me, but I have only ever been myself. So if I am not your cup of tea or glass of champagne there are plenty of other places where you will belong.
I love to celebrate who we are as an individual through the power of clothes. It is definitely for people who want to play and how they present themselves to the world and how to honour that message. Every woman is real. At any age, stage, size, background, believe there is power in how you choose to dress.
Nikki explains the launch of her first season label and how it coincided with her peri-menopausal years. There was a lot of anxiety and disruptions from Covid for the past two years… she believes you have to come back to your why.
We get to hear the feedback from one of her regulars who says… ‘Midlife has thrown me a changed body that I want to embrace and not hide away. Thankyou for creating a brand that allows me to be me.’
Nikki wants women to feel great. Women do not have to feel invisible in their 50’s and beyond. Clothes are such a tool to feel visible.
The backbone of the collection is the core non-boring pieces, designed to make life easy. Then there are the show pony pieces including sequins.
Self-love to Nikki is nurturing the person I am today. What can I do to make me feel whole and nurtured. I say today because tomorrow I might need something different. Nikki is aware of what she needs now and honours the fact she is in menopause and is more aware of what is going on.
Nikki said she went from HIIT exercise and running and switching to walking and yoga as her body rebelled. For someone else it’s different again. It is self-awareness of what your body needs in that moment. Sleep, good food, less champagne, the way you exercise… and being aware of what you need right here today.
Nikki shares how her beautiful children have ridden the path with her. She has a 26 year old son, a 25 year old daughter and a 16 year old son. They are their own people, and I am just the facilitator of their lives. It is their journey and how they step up to life says Nikki.
We talk about how Nikki lost her mum and the journey of how she has coped with all her huge losses. It was the tipping point of last year that opened the pathways to do the inner work. She sees her psychologist for maintenance… you don’t just go in a crisis or when the fires are burning. You go to do the back burning.
Health tips that Nikki uses to keep healthy. She says be a life-long learner. She says do not hold onto the notion that you cannot reach out. Have people in your corner for any aspect of health. Nikki herself has health conditions she has learned to live with and they have helped her to become more aware of what she needs when depleted. Here’s her top 3 tips for good health.
Move your body to practice body acceptance
Sleep to get good sleep!
Nutrition with whole foods, not processed, good food that tastes good
We talk about Nikki’s love of essential oils including her favourite Twenty8 Romance & Intimacy Oil blend. They are her anchors and we discuss the concept of aromatic dressing.
Through Covid Nikki talks about the way her business grew and how they then regrouped. It is so important to her to simplify and aim to be able to control the controllables. Not every business has to be massive she reminds us too. She explains how she manages her work and how she does her setting of intentions on a Sunday.
Nikki shares how well she has worked in collaboration with other amazing brands and in particular with Frankie4Footwear and the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network on the Sunshine Coast. Plus Business Chicks. Nikki talks about how she names her pieces in the collections.
About Nikki:
Nikki Parkinson, 54, is a former journalist-turned blogger, author and now fashion designer. At the core of all that she does is her love of helping and supporting women to find greater confidence through their everyday style and the life they lead.
Styling You, a Queensland micro business Telstra Business Award winner, has attracted sponsorship from national brands such as FRANKiE4 Footwear, Allianz travel insurance and Priceline.
In 2019 Nikki launched her own fashion label, Styling You The Label, offering Australian-made, non-boring wardrobe basics that take the stress out of the what-to-wear question.
She has long advocated for a disruption in the way that fashion is marketed to women. Styling You The Label is the first label globally to invest in showcasing its designs on every size that it sells – size 6-20. Not only does that increase customer confidence but it flips the idea that fashion should only be seen on one size, height, age, colour, belief or ability.

SLP 136: Self Love Quicky – Myrrh Essential Oil
Thursday Dec 16, 2021
Thursday Dec 16, 2021
If ever there was an essential oil to use to support rejuvenation and endurance, then Myrrh or Commiphora myrrha would be it! An amazing oil to help you through physically and emotionally demanding times and particularly perfect for this time of year being the festive season.
The history of Myrrh is closely tied to that of Frankincense and were amongst the two precious resins preserved for rituals and ceremonies, perfumes and medicine. It has been mentioned as far back as 4,000 years and has been considered precious given its association as one of the gifts to Christ from the wise men for its power to ground and connect at a deep level. It was always used for religious ceremonies and fumigations by ancient Egyptians.
Myrrh has powerful therapeutic and medicinal qualities. It is used as an anti-inflammatory aid, an expectorant, a stimulant and digestive aid. It can assist with bacterial and fungal infections, diarrhoea, and flatulence.
Myrrh has astringent qualities and is said to support the healing of mouth, gum and throat infections and wonderful for cold sores. In an ointment this amazing oil can also support the healing of bed sores and wounds.
When it comes to skincare Myrrh is a miracle worker. Amazing for dry and mature skin, it also helps with the reduction of wrinkles and can help to heal cracked heels. You can use Myrrh as a skin tonic and a quick pick-me-up to make your skin feel refreshed.
Myrrh instils a deep sense of calm and connection and can help you to feel more grounded and peaceful. It supports you to feel more abundance and expansion.
This powerful oil is an excellent uterine stimulant and can help relieve painful periods. It is said to help with childbirth and to support more trust from within.
Myrrh is wonderful to use for respiratory conditions such as colds and flu’s and is most powerful in an inhalation by placing a few drops into a bowl with hot water and placing a towel over the head. Of course the diffuser is excellent for supporting everyone in the home to breathe easier too.
From an emotional point of view, it can be used to help create more patience and is an excellent tonic for those who over think, worry and suffer from anxiety. If you feel down and vulnerable, then Myrrh is a strengthening oil to help you feel more inspired and empowered. It can help you feel less neglected, overwhelmed and sad. It supports a more positive outlook, is inspiring, warming and fortifying. It is an excellent oil to help seek life’s direction and of course for endurance.
Myrrh has been symbolic with rituals for thousands of years. It blends beautifully with Frankincense, Pine and Orange and is a main ingredient in the famous Egyptian perfume ‘Kyphi’ known to reduce wrinkles and preserve youth.
Myrrh is said to have a wonderful effect on the spirit and instils more inner peace and quietness. It is excellent to use in prayer and meditation and in healings.
‘My Connection to intuition is empowering and I follow the guidance that comes with ease and grace.’

SLP 135: Choose Better Live Wildly with Tarnea O’Meara
Tuesday Dec 14, 2021
Tuesday Dec 14, 2021
‘It’s quality and that’s why I made it. I was so sick of having or finding things that had something else in it. I guess that’s another reason why I created the company. I just wanted people to choose better. I wanted better quality and if I can inspire someone to choose a better quality product just in one thing then hopefully that inspires them to choose better in every single thing in their life. Or maybe they’ll look at something else a bit different and think, ‘Oh maybe I should look at something else in my life. Or what about the skincare I use, she said something about the chemicals in sunscreen? Well ok, what sunscreen do I use?’ That’s pretty much why I did make it and why I love it and I still do it. It’s just this awesome product that came along with it.’ Tarnea O’Meara
Daughter of Cyndi and Howard O’Meara the gorgeous Tarnea O’Meara explains how she grew up seen as the ‘hippy’ given her upbringing with these two special souls and how it is no accident she ended up studying nutrition and chiropractic care. We find out what makes this young woman tick and how she is making the most of her life regardless of how the world is right now. Tarnea is all about making better choices, choosing the best quality and living better, wildly.
Tarnea shares with us about her rebellious years of eating a lot of things that did not work for her but also how it lead her to want to actually study nutrition. A desire to be a professional surfer and a love of nutrition also helped her to realise how amazing the body is.
Now studying to be a chiropractor in Spain, Tarnea realises how special it was to grow up in the O’Meara clan! She knows how rare it is to be a part of such an amazing family and is now acknowledging what it means to her.
With an incredible start in life including a journey that took her family travelling around Australia for two whole years, made her value and appreciate the outdoors and family a lot more. It has given her the confidence of where she is and where she has been. And the places she wants to go. Being immersed in the Aboriginal culture at times and seeing different families and ways of living has made her appreciate how she has confidence to travel and fall in love with the idea of adventure.
It opened her world to other people and not feeling so isolated in a home. It has made her think for herself and create a more open mind.
Tarnea talks family and appreciates how her siblings are her best friends thanks to a shared and unique upbringing. She believes it is a bit of both nature and nurture that has inspired her to be who she is today.
As a teenager she had a snow season at Mt Hotham and had a few seasons in the USA which included cheap and not so nutritious food. She explains how the SAD (Standard Australian Diet) has such detrimental impacts on our health and body.
She explains that the ramifications of eating this way which includes inflammation and pain but also knows this is NOT normal. So many may not know what it is like to be without these symptoms, they think it is normal yet as Tarnea explains this is anything but normal.
Tarnea explains the most common conditions she saw in clinic were anxiety and depression as well as gut issues. Of course there was weight issues but it saddened her to see when a diet is so bad it can be hard to see how it effects our moods and emotions so extremely.
We talk addiction to sweet cravings and the emotional impact this has on the individual. Advertising does not help. Media marketing is smart but does not serve the health of the individual. We are not educated enough or educated in the right way.
To get back to wholistic living and fine health Tarnea believes it is important to be open minded about what is out there. There is not one protocol that fits one person. She believes the less ingredients the better. Taking responsibility for what you put in your pantry. Part of loving yourself is knowing what to do to take care of yourself.
Education and experimenting can be a wonderful way to understand how your body is best served. Maybe dropping certain foods, trying something for a week. Being mindful of how you feel after eating a meal. Don’t scoff food down. Self-awareness would be one of the first most important steps and noticing how you feel every single day.
Experimenting with certain protocols like the 4 Phase Fat Elimination protocol at Changing Habits or fasting or the GAPS protocol which allows your system to rest, all of which allows the body to reset metabolism and the gut or look at it as a detox.
Tarnea admits failure has been a part of her food. But she says the most important thing to do is to remember your why? That is what will keep you focused and on target to keep you more motivated to stick to taking care of yourself.
We talk about the health of surfers. Tarnea believes some are maybe even half of all surfers out there have an affinity for health and excitement of travel. But she soon realised for herself how beneficial food was in the way she performed or felt the next day or recovered.
Tarnea discusses her beautiful brand new product ‘Wild Collagen Reds’ that took her over two years to develop. It started out as a thought being in the sun all the time so she wanted something to help support her in her body and what she was doing. Particularly when it came to skincare. You are what you eat. So she looked into the good foods for the body and good proteins.
This is why marine collagen became the foundation for her new product being great for the skin, ligaments and the skin. She then wanted to support her immune system when traveling so she added beetroot, raspberries for their Vitamin D and blackcurrant which has anthocyanins which are so beneficial due to the Vitamin C but also the antioxidant qualities too.
And so Wild Collagen Reds was born which you can get from: https://www.thathealthyco.com/ or from Changing Habits at: https://changinghabits.com.au/product/wild-collagen-reds-that-healthy-co/
This is super beneficial for recovery and has remarkable qualities to help the individual to choose better. And maybe this would then inspire people to make better choices.
Tarnea enrolled in a weekend to hunt and gather her own food in Sydney. She was the only woman on this trip. She was watching the way the world was going. She realises how disconnected to food we really are and where it actually comes from. She wanted to know she could catch it, shoot it or cut it up and use it correctly. She learned how to hunt, and on this weekend, shares how they found deer and goat. She learnt how to harvest it from scratch and appreciate the true meaning of grass fed. And most importantly the gratitude for the life of the animal.
She shares what drove her to travel to Spain to study further. She shares her experience of seeing her niece born, the initial struggles and need for medical intervention but even more so how the chiropractic community all came together.
She wanted to be a part of this and felt signs from all angles to get to Spain to be part of this loving community. She felt staying in Australia would have been the easy way out. But she has been in this country her whole life and needed a new experience and challenge. She has always wanted to study overseas and experience new cultures and the overriding appealing thing was the challenge, it was not the easy way out.
Now, Spain is her home away from home with even more like-minded souls. It is amazing and awesome and she feels she is in the right place right now.
She says go when you are not ready, you will never be ready. Take the leap of faith even if it scares the shit out of you. You can always go back.
Tarnea talks about the state of the world and how she is navigating it all. The virus is indeed a conversation and some rules have changed and they want to bring out a vaccine passport as well. She says it doesn’t effect her too much. She doesn’t care if she cannot go out. She still sees the world as amazing and as far as she is concerned it is about perspective. She will continue as she wants to go on and get around the obstacles. And if there is a block she will find a way!
Her message to her family is that she misses them all a lot. But she is doing so freakin well, worry about yourselves hoping everyone is all ok in Australia. She loves them all. And staying connected via technology makes her feel like she is almost here.
Her definition of Self Love is taking responsibility for your own happiness. She realises she was trying to find an external source of happiness but with a change in mindset she knows that no one else can make you happy. Happiness is a choice. It’s your responsibility and how that manifests which could be a bath or in nature or spending time doing nothing.
She knows you can have a day of a pity party but do something, or do something else. Change what you are doing. If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got… So, do something else.
Tarnea talks openly about her chiropractor brother in law TJ (Tim James) and shares how inspiring he is. She talks about how inspiring her sister Casie and TJ were through their challenges of their child being born.
Tarnea shares her daily practices on how to live through such strange times:
Find something you love and do it everyday
Find rituals and routines
Appreciate the small things in life like the rain
Make tiny things better
Gratitude, write down what you are grateful for that day
Show appreciation
Affirmations are amazing for manifesting
Mindset quotes
Stay in your own world and skip!
Her message to her mum and dad would be thankyou for all the hard work you have put in. She knows how lucky and fortunate she is and appreciates how hard her parents worked.
Her favourite quote is from Anais Nin:
The world is not as it is, it is as we are.
Asking Tarnea who she is, here is her response.
Well, where do I start? I grew up is a dang lucky family that embraced wholehearted living and holistic practices. Was taught that life and health are some of the most important things we have and making things from scratch, cooking and getting messy in the kitchen was a fun thing. I spent my teens and early 20’s living it up, eating everything I wasn’t allowed to eat when I was younger. I had a ball and fell in love with the idea of surfing!
I then competed around the world in professional surfing and started to really hone in on my food and nutrition. I soon realised the power of food. How drastically it can affect us emotionally, physically and mentally. Nutrition and cooking become my priority and so I began my studies in Nutrition. I am now a qualified Nutritionist that has gone on to create my own brand to share a message that quality really matters and we need to choose better every time. That Healthy Co. I fell in love with the human body when you give it the right tools, that is when we really thrive! This has lead me to further my studies.
Surrounded by the chiropractic world, the loving and embracing community that it is, I now have started studying in Barcelona to become a Chiropractor. And that is where you find me now. First-year, and loving it. Im 27 and I cant wait to be a Chiro now as well.

SLP 134: Self Love Quicky – Frankincense Essential Oil
Thursday Dec 09, 2021
Thursday Dec 09, 2021
Frankincense is an oil to be revered. Used throughout history as an integral ingredient in cosmetics and incense burners it is also closely associated with religious traditions and rites. This precious resin was one of the gifts for Jesus Christ along with Myrrh and gold. And in this week’s Quicky we look at the incredible characteristics of this precious resin.
Due to these connections it is known as the perfect Christmas oil and along with Pine, Orange and Myrrh would be ideal in a vaporizer and spritzer. It is a wonderfully relaxing oil which is why it is popular to use in meditation and prayer and is an ideal oil along with lavender and chamomile to keep you chilled in the build up to the hectic Christmas festivities and celebrations.
Frankincense, whose scientific name boswellia carteri, is extracted from the gum or resin of the tree grown in places like Oman, Somalia, Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia. The main components alpha pinene actanol, bornyl acetate and linalool make it an excellent stimulating, tonifying and antiseptic oil that is calming, on the nervous system and regenerating for the skin. It is an excellent immune booster and with its expectorant properties can be used with oils like eucalyptus and lemon, in a chest rub or steam inhalation when feeling run down or blocked up.
Research over the past twenty years has continuously been alerted to the efficacy of Frankincense in the treatment of various benign and malignant tumors, however the corresponding data supporting this information is still being discussed in ongoing research.
Whilst it is not recommended to ingest essential oils the antiseptic qualities make it a fantastic oil to use as a preventative measure against oral conditions like bad breath, toothaches, ulcers and other infections so look for products that include this magical essence. You can make your own toothpaste or mouthwash with coconut oil, baking soda, peppermint or spearmint and frankincense. Or simply add one drop to your toothpaste when brushing your teeth.
Frankincense is renowned as one of the best oils for anti-aging and is excellent to use in repair blends or where the skin has been marked from things like acne, boils or sun-spots. The tonifying, regenerating and cytophylactic qualities may help reduce stretch marks and scarring and is ideal to add a drop to your favorite moisturizer or body lotion.
Frankincense helps to relieve nervous unrest and reduces the effects of mild anxiety and nervous tension. It is a very effective sedative as it helps to create a sense of mental peace, relaxation and a deeper connection within. It is used to help create a more open mind, awakened insight and self-reflection hence its spiritual uses. Used in a bath, vaporizer or diffuser this comforting oil helps to promote deep breathing and mindfulness. If you happen to feel frazzled, overwhelmed or like you are completely strung out – and let’s face it this time of year can certainly do that to the best of us – here is the number one oil to call on.
It is the most spiritually uplifting and soothing oil for the mind.

SLP 133: Allow Grief To Change Us with Silke Herwald
Tuesday Dec 07, 2021
Tuesday Dec 07, 2021
‘There are differences in the relationships but at the same time – it’s grief. It’s the grief of having lost a loved one. And needing to find a way to allow that grief to change us. We can never go back to how things were beforehand. That is utterly impossible. So, it is more about allowing that grief to change us and to find a way that that person can always be a part of us.’
In this very special podcast, you will hear how Silke Herwald teaches us to work alongside of, and with grief. Silke explains how we can all work with grief in a positive way – even in the face of our current world and the things we may have lost over the past few years. Grief after all can be more than the loss of loved ones and it is a natural part of our lives. But do we actually do grief well?
Grief is an unconscious process, and your unconscious is always trying to work for you and help you. The unconscious knows you have lost so much, and it wants to make sure you do not lose more than you have already lost. This is why in grief we usually only remember the last memories of that loss. When, in actual fact, there is so much more to the memory and our life. So, the unconscious keeps replaying this memory and we can get easily overcome by that last memory.
Once we help the unconscious mind to find a better way then we can access the resources spontaneously to better serve us. We seem to think there is only two choices. We either grieve and feel horrible or we move on and let go and forget about our loved one. But this is neither easy or true because the most resourceful part of grieving is actually between the two so we can remember loved ones (or things we have lost) in their entirety with love.
The grieving process is there to help us to remember loved ones with a smile rather than being shackled by the traumas of grief. It is an ongoing connection to all that is when we grieve resourcefully.
Today we talk about having an ability to grieve with gratitude and with re-wiring the mind we all have the ability to do this well. We also discuss common responses to grief including shock, anger, deep sadness and pain. We cannot run away from it or push it down. Or the unconscious will let you know when there is something unresolved.
Silke discusses ways in which we can help ourselves and others in grief. She believes we are not great at doing grief as a whole. It can be difficult for society to help someone in grief. The best thing she says we can do is to just be there. Avoid starting any sentence with ‘at least’. Only the grieving person should be saying this. Just be there, listen to their story and ask, ‘How can I support you?’ Do the shopping, vacuum the floor or bring food. The simple tasks seem so difficult to do at the beginning for someone grappled by grief.
In Silke’s experience most people love it when you remember their loved one. So, keep the conversation going. They feel alone as it is and if no one is talking then it’s as though everyone that person has died all over again. Keep talking.
We discuss the loss of a child and how harrowing this can be, but how the loss of any loved one can be challenging. Grief is not a competition. Everything changes with the loss of a loved one.
The world right now has changed too, and Silke describes our need for a sense of certainty and the fact we like to feel we are in control. But it is all an illusion. We have never really known what is around the corner. What the world has shown us right now is that we do not have that certainty. The changes are happening at an incredibly fast pace. Yet the brain loves familiarity. Whenever there are changes it takes a little while to adjust. And then we adjust to a new reality and the world changes again. A lot of people feel they are constantly on the back foot and this is causing a lot of grief and anxiety. The new reality keeps changing. Planning anything is incredibly difficult at the moment.
There is so much grief around losing life as we once knew it. It comes down to our values and finding a way to live those values no matter what is happening around us. We live our values by doing the things we love to do.
When we cannot express these or live them in the way we are used then there is a huge adjustment phase. Thankfully there are things like zoom but we know it is not really the same as spending time with others.
What we tend to miss the most is just hanging out under the same roof. This has been incredibly challenging in the past few years including the loss of freedom. The most important thing to acknowledge is that change is challenging for us. The brain loves familiarity so honour the unfamiliarity. It is a part of self-love to acknowledge you are struggling and admit it to oneself and these emotions are ok. It’s important to feel them, honour them and not push them down.
Silke says it is important to pay attention to the unconscious objections even though we try to argue the logic away. The unconscious has a way though to object and be heard. She says to lean into these objections. The moment we do, the mind feels heard. It needs us to acknowledge it and notice we are struggling, and to not be ok.
We discuss the 5 stages of grief by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and how Silke does not agree in its entirety.
Anxiety is a learned response says Silke, and we usually learn it from a grown up. As children we copy the behaviour of grown-ups. Perhaps as adults we have molly-coddled our children a little too much making them feel they cannot handle situations as they grow.
We can also learn anxiety through a significant emotional event. And we are not necessarily taught the resources to deal with these scenarios. Yet we have all the resources we need within, sometimes it just needs support to realise that we are incredible resourceful and adaptable as humans. We can deal with so much more than we think we can.
We realise that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The unconscious mind processes through stories, metaphors and symbols. The conscious is the more logic part of us. A beautiful way to heal grief Silke mentions is the ‘book end’ process that is used in hypnotherapy very powerfully.
Her closing statement is about staying curious and being kind. And she believes we can manage the world as it is right now in a much better way if we do.
Silke Herwald is a highly experienced and skilled Grief Specialist, Master Hypnotherapist, Master Practitioner NLP, Supervisor, speaker and accomplished presenter with over 12 years experience. She works with people from all walks of life to deal with grief and anxiety in very resourceful ways.
Silke presented her unique “Grief to Love” framework at the 2019 AHA world conference to an international audience of Psychotherapists, Counsellors, Psychologists and Hypnotherapists. She has mastered the fine art of talking about grief in a light-hearted yet deeply insightful way.
Over 12 years Silke has assisted hundreds of clients through grief and anxiety: Worldwide online, in person and with “Grief to Love” seminars. Silke understood from a start that her clients from all over the world share the same experience. Their heart is broken and not their head.
Silke had mastered the fine art of working with the subconscious processes because logic, rational thinking and conscious work reaches its limits very quickly. Three years ago Silke lost her soul sister to cancer. Silke promised her that she’d do whatever it takes so that one day their parents and her beloved hubby would be able to live life and feel joy again. She had no clue how but Silke managed to keep her promise by developing an even deeper understanding of how subconscious processes work in grief.
Then 2021 hit with a vengeance. First Silke had to help her gentle, loving therapy dog over the rainbow bridge. Her dog had been a huge part and valued member of the clinic team. Only a couple of weeks later Silke completely unexpectedly lost her beloved dad; and her mum her best friend and husband.
Silke knows what it feels like to be on the floor rocked by grief. She also heard her own conscious mind politely say: “sure, I’ll try that…” while every cell inside her body screamed ‘heck no’.
Today Silke not only has the knowledge and skills to help people with grief and all the subconscious objections we have to moving forward or letting go but also the personal and professional experience.
Silke is one of the most down to earth, big hearted, non-judgemental and fun-loving people you could meet. Silke has her clinics in Coolum and Birtinya and she works worldwide online with individuals and groups. Silke lives with her husband and her young Border Collie on the Sunshine Coast, Australia.
Her definition of Self Love is unconditional love. It is about accepting oneself warts’n’all. It’s realising our humanity. Human beings are everything but imperfect. It is a forgiving relationship with self. It’s about honouring our strengths and weaknesses. Treat yourself the way you treat others. Remind yourself your worth is a given. You cannot earn any more worth. Or lose it. You are unique.
Her favourite quote is from Blaise Pascal: The heart has its reasons of which reason knows nothing.

SLP 132: Self Love Quicky – Feed Your Face
Thursday Dec 02, 2021
Thursday Dec 02, 2021
No matter what is going on in the world, no matter how busy or crazy you are right now, there is nothing better than to take a few moments each day to come back to you, get fully present and feed your face. Here are 5 face ways to treat your skin and take some precious time out to fill your cup!
Treat yourself to a Facial Steam
Essential oils can help to regulate the activity of the capillaries and restore vitality to the skin. One of the nicest and most effective treatments is a Facial Steam. Place a stainless bowl with steaming hot water (for safety place onto a towel onto a table) and add 6-10 drops of your chosen oils. For normal skin use oils like clary sage, geranium, lavender and ylang ylang. For dry skin use oils like cedarwood, sandalwood, palmarosa and lavender. For oily skin use oils like lavender, lemon, geranium and frankincense. Cleanse your skin. Drape a large towel over the head and allow the steam to gently open the pores. Do this for 5-10 mins for maximum effect. Keep face at a distance that is not too hot.
Use Floral Waters to Hydrate the Skin
Floral waters work wonders on the skin. Milder and easier to use than essential oils, they are recommended for inflamed or sensitive skins. Floral waters retain the water soluble plant chemicals which do not appear in the essential oil. After cleansing the skin you can use Lavender or Rose floral water to do a gentle compress by soaking two cotton pads and gently pressing onto the face. Repeat over the face 1-3 times. Place the Balance or Nourish Moisturiser onto the face to lock in the moisture.
Do a Clay Treatment Mask
Facial masks are cleansing, nourishing and revitalising, they help to promote the elimination of waste and stimulate blood supply. In a small ceramic or glass bowl add 1Tbsp Clay Treatment Mask add 1 drop of your chosen essential oil depending on whether you have normal, dry or oily skin as above. Add 1 Tbsp Lavender or Rose floral water (or filtered water) and mix to a smooth paste. Apply to your face with your fingertips massaging all over. Leave until it dries then remove with a damp cloth. Spritz with floral water and apply Balance or Nourish Moisturiser
Compress Your Skin
Compressing the skin acts like a gentle exfoliant and hydrator. Fill a bowl or the sink with warm to hot water. Add 3-4 drops of your chosen essential oils from above. Immerse your face washer into the water and squeeze out the excess. Press and compress washer onto the face 3-4 times all over, inhaling as you go. Repeat three or four times.
Apply a Face Serum
One of the nicest things you can do for your skin is add a face serum to your regime. Serums are designed to deliver high concentrations of specific active ingredients deep into the skin. They are formulated to penetrate into each layer of the skin to deliver specific, targeted results. Serums are intended for daily use, unlike masks and peels. Serums can come in any consistency but are generally lighter than oils or creams. After you have cleansed the skin and spritzed your Lavender or Rose Floral Water all over the face add 4-5 drops of the Face Lift Serum (rich, nourishing and great for dry and mature skin) or the Ester Plus Face Serum (regenerating, moisturising and amazing for more normal to oily skin). Allow a few minutes to be absorbed and then lock in the moisture with the Balance or Nourish Moisturiser.
Face yourself and become more than you were before!

SLP 131: Open Hearted Connection with Helen Padarin
Tuesday Nov 30, 2021
Tuesday Nov 30, 2021
‘We feel more close-hearted when we are in that state of fear. And that happens as a type of protection really, but unfortunately a side effect of a closed heart means we are less connected with ourselves so it is harder for us to hear our own intuition and our own gut feelings, our own sense of what is true for us and what is right for us as individuals but what it also does, it doesn’t just create that sense of disconnection from ourselves, but it creates that sense of disconnection from others and the world around us too. Not just in ourselves but division between one another.’
A very openhearted and real conversation around the state of the world through the eyes of one of Australia’s most well-renowned natural health practitioners Helen Padarin who in this interview guides us with science and soul back into our hearts with love and care.
Knowing there is so much for our nervous systems to navigate right now it is clearly impacting our health with so many feeling the pressure. Helen believes the focus needs to come back to self-care and to truly nurture one self.
Her clinic has seen more restrictions and pressures and coercions the base line stuff we are all dealing with now has added pressure like isolation or lock down or fear… it is not just emotional and mental which is huge but also a link to the physical.
We talk soul, spirit and how to have an open heart.
So to understand this more when we are in a state of fear our amygdala is activated and the frontal part of the brain shuts down – amygdala hijack – and we go into a reactive state of being. We make decisions out of fear in a reactive state rather than a sense of empowerment. And this shuts of our heart as a form of protection but a side effect means we are less connected with ourselves. It also disconnects us from ourselves and one another.
It does not matter about your opinions or beliefs right now there is a lot of fear happening on both sides.
Helen lets us know all the things that can bring us back to our present moment and into our body. To open our hearts we need to get back into our body and to know that our senses bring us back to the body.
We talk neuro-psycho-immunology and how stress impacts our endocrine system and neuro-transmitters and nervous system innovation. This can make us susceptible to immune disorders and things like cancer, even our reproductive cycles and fertility. It effects our ability to produce digestive enzymes and how we absorb food of which the nutrients are the building blocks for health and wellbeing.
The biggest emphasis in times of any stress is to maintain our sense of health and wellness.
Helen acknowledges that no matter how smart or educated anyone is ultimately we are all human and all humans experience trauma over the extent of each person’s life. If we are not aware of the patterns created by these traumas, we can create repeating patterns. We are all to some extent children walking around in adult bodies with wounds and the need to heal some aspects of our lives. We never heal in isolation, we are always interacting with others so the more we can take ownership of our own stuff with compassion and empathy we can help the healing of the collective.
Through experiences we have innate biases which will support our story. It takes a lot of courage to entertain another story… and actually question our beliefs and stories.
There is so much influence from industry happening as well. We have always known that industry does not always have the best interests of the consumer at heart and there is a lot of vested interest right now.
If we can meet with openhearted discussion and friendly debate, instead of a culture of not agreeing so you cannot be friends anymore, then there is more hope. It is very fascinating how quickly this shift in being able to converse and being able to have different points of view and healthy debate. We seem to have lost a lot of that lately which may indeed be driven by fear and hearts being closed off.
We discuss the possibility of having more open-hearted conversations. Perhaps read ‘Non-Violent Communication’ by Marshall B Rosenberg and maybe understanding ‘The 4 Agreements’ by Don Miguiel Ruiz where one is to not take things personally.
Helen believes pauses are so important. And to actually hear what the other person is saying and not take it personally, but rather find yourself saying, ‘That’s interesting.’
Somatic experiencing is a type of trauma therapy. This is about understanding where the memories are held in the body. The better we know ourselves the less threatened we will be by others. The more ok and openhearted we can be regardless of another’s opinion the more open we can be to learning understanding that we know everything. We have a lot of different shapes and shades to each of us.
We go down the rabbit hole of who is ‘THEY’? When we are told ‘they say’ we have to do things or not do things. Helen has a variety of views on this, whether it is the perceived power of the elite or whether it could be a mental construct and our responsibility – or broken down into our ability to respond.
When you are responsible you have more choice. And it gives you more options. It may not be easy but then having no choice is not easy either. ‘They’ could be the construct of who we give the power to, and maybe we feel powerless or the victim. It can be incredibly scary and difficult territory. People in places of power are vastly outnumbered by the population itself. And if everyone stayed true to their own truths and were more empowered there may be less problems.
We all need to do our own healing.
Helen explains how a vaccine was developed and what it has done for humanity and although her understanding is limited right now she believes it may not all be as it is portrayed. She encourages all to look into the era of the polio vaccine and the story behind the story.
This vaccine is very different to any vaccine ever produced before. A vaccine takes 7-15 years to be deemed relatively safe. A vaccine normally has a part of the live or dead pathogen. The mRNA is basically coding our cells to make an identifying protein from your own cells that looks like the protein on the virus. You are producing that threat within your own body which is where some of the concern has come about. What happens to the immune system when it is primed in such a way?
The immune system primed in this way creates an overreaction which can potentially cause death. Helen also talks about the other ingredients graphine oxide and what impacts that might have. Another concern is that they have been produced with brand new technology with NO long term proof to say they are safe and effective. They also do not stop transmission and they may reduce hospitalisation, even though some research suggests otherwise, it does not fit the previous definition of a vaccination.
Helen expresses her concern around the idea of herd immunity (which protects the most vulnerable people) where it was once suggested that 70-80% in total of people who have had the infection, or the vaccination, was herd immunity… and now the definition on the World Health site it is now only reached through the vaccination… this raises a red flag too.
The other part of the picture is there are known therapeutics (medications and supplements) that are cheap and very readily available (when not inhibited) that have been proven to help viruses like Covid yet these have been now removed from availability. This also raises red flags.
There is no way this is about health, this is about CONTROL.
If it was about health we would be hearing about quality sleep, to eat well, movement, water. If it really was a pandemic then spending $26m on an advertising campaign it begs the question why we need this much spent to prove it is.
When other things are being withheld and there is only one way out of this it begs the question why?
We talk about how one size fits all, it has never been the case with food, lifestyle, climate and certainly not pharmaceutically… There are genomic testings done for breast cancer alone to ensure the right medication is administered to the right woman. So, to assume this one vaccine is right for everyone raises question. How can it be ok to inject brand new technology into a brand new baby or pregnant women when we have no data to support the long term safety?
There has been over 10,000 reaction claims to the vaccine which is more reactions to this shot than every other shot combined over the past 30 years. We are playing with fire.
It is amazing how many resources we pulled together for this one event. Imagine if we spent this much money educating villages on permaculture, food, agriculture, educating in schools and driving a deeper connection to what we are eating. Or it could be used in safe water resources. The means are obviously there to do it as it has all suddenly appeared, yet we are a country in debt. In Helen’s opinion we have misdirected funds, energy and action.
This could be the issue with centralised systems rather than acting locally for global benefit. More things close to home that people are engaged with. It comes back to the disconnect to our needs and sustenance.
We talk about following the money trail behind this world-wide scenario.
The third largest cause of death in the USA is medicines prescribed for their correct reasons. Not incorrect, but correct. If alternative integrative doctors or chiropractors for example get an adverse reaction they are named and shamed. They are considered dangerous.
The maxima of first do no harm has certainly gone out the window with this. Nobody can say with true conviction that these vaccines are safe and effective. Maybe in 10-15 years time we may see they worked out pretty well, but we need to remember they are still in trial and research phase. So, there is no way they can say with certainty otherwise.
Things we can do:
Medical treatments are a personal choice. Helen fully supports it. She does not support mandates and coercion.
Support your system with good water, nutritious food, sleep, laughter, relaxation, play, sunshine… we need daily to keep our mind, heart, immune system and hormones in good condition. The more regulated and balanced and well-functioning these things are the better resilience we have through times of stress. Focus on nourishing and cleansing you.
Supplements for extra support whilst in a heightened state of pressure including more hands on care like acupuncture, chiro, massage, holding yourself. There is more need for more nurturing and care.
If you choose to have the jab from the research in past 18 months and the function of these interventions, things that can be somewhat protective in various protocols like quercetic, vitamin D and C, resveratrol, glutathione, zinc etc
Daily basics – Sheridan Austin’s Foraged for You Mother’s Blend and Glow a skin support formulation with collagen, Australian native foods high in Vit C and antioxidants, resveratrol and maritime pine bark which all have immune modulating effects.
Fear is the greatest driver towards stress so get back into your heart and know that wherever you are at right now is the right place.
It is time to act from a different place. Gain new perspectives. Gather mentors who help with embodied experiences not just talking. Approach with softness and compassion and then we can do it for others. If we do not heal this, we will judge others. Say I see it. I hear you. I support you. Cultivate that compassion and connection within and for all parts of ourselves.
Check out the Twenty8 blend Immune Boost 10ml synergy oil blend and Pine Oil.
Helen’s final message to you is this… you need to feel it to heal it. The flipside is that whatever we resist persists. Encourage some softness and compassion for yourself as we are in challenging times right now. Acknowledge you are doing the best you can with the resources you have at the moment. Give yourself some love, compassion and high-5’s so far. Be open to being curious about what you are feeling. Don’t shut it out or numb it with food or alcohol. Remember you are not your feelings, they are feedback system. You are feeling your feelings you are not your feelings.
Sometimes just seeing it is enough for it to transform into something beautiful. Do things that are really nourishing for yourself and from there seeds will grow and spread.
Spend time with yourself and learn to grow with and trust your intuition. That will change the world. You’ve got this!
Her definition of Self Love is to really acknowledge and accept with compassion all parts of ourselves. We are not binary creatures. We are not all good we are not all bad, all joy and frivolity or shame and disgust. We have all parts. We have the fear, anxiety, the bliss the sadness, the grief. The only way we can really love ourselves is to befriend all those parts of us. Befriend fear, it’s not necessarily bad. Get curious about your feelings and the situation. Create a shift within and we can gain a new perspective.
Her favourite quote is from Rumi:
Beyond the idea of right doing and wrong doing
There is a field.
I’ll meet you there.
It just is.

SLP 130: Self Love Quicky – LIME Essential Oil

Lime Essential Oil – Citrus Aurantifolia or Medica
If ever you are feeling like you need a little lift, an added spring in your step or a sense of ‘beam me up Scottie’ then the exquisite, fresh and uplifting aroma of lime oil is your number one go-to!
It is one of the most revered mood elevators. You cannot help but feel happy and invigorated by its appealing, sharp yet sweet, citrus scent. One drop on a cotton pad tucked into your top is a wonderful way to use your body as a human diffuser. Its beautiful scent will hit you at various times throughout the day and you may find yourself smiling with increased zest every time you inhale it.
Lime is refreshing and stimulating, activating and revitalising and much like lemon oil it can be used for its powerful cleansing qualities. A couple of drops on a damp cloth can help to remove stains, chewing gum and sticker residue.
Adding a few drops of this oil to a recipe that requires the flavor of lime is out of this world. You can make an exquisite chocolate body scrub by adding 2 drops of lime to 2 Tbsp rapadura sugar, 1 Tbsp of coconut oil and 1 tsp of cacao powder. This is serious body love at its best!
Lime is also a wonderful astringent, it is tonifying, antiseptic and antimicrobial making it an ideal additive in skincare. If you add 2 drops of lime and 2 drops of lavender into a bowl of warm water, you can use a face washer to compress onto skin conditions such as congested oily skin, acne, eczema and dermatitis.
One of the most common ways to extract this oil is by cold pressing the rind of the fruit. This retains many of the natural elements that make it so appealing. However, it is cold pressed lime oil that is known to be phototoxic and should be avoided in the sun within 6-12hours of application. Steam distilled lime is not considered to be phototoxic.
Lime is an effective immune booster and when used in a diffuser or vaporizer with oils like rosemary, lemon and eucalyptus it can help clear sinuses and head colds. If you add 2 drops of lime, 1 drop lavender and 1 drop tea tree into a bowl of hot water you can use it as a powerful steam inhalation to appease headaches and cold and flu symptoms.
When blended into a carrier oil like sweet almond or jojoba, lime, lemon and neroli make a wonderful combination for helping to reduce cellulite and varicose veins. And blended with oils like grapefruit, fennel and oregano can support a sluggish digestive system.
Due to its uplifting qualities it is an appealing stress reliever and when used in a vaporizer can appease a negative mindset, anxiety and exhaustion. Inhaling a drop on a tissue can help appease a sense of apathy and lack of energy. And here’s the best part… if you have a broken or heavy heart, feel like you have lost your way or just need a good hug then consider lime oil your dream mum in a bottle!
In the beautiful Aroma Cards there is even more information about this amazing oil but if the plant could talk to you here is her message:
‘I have boundless inner peace and joy as worry and stress just melt away.’
Aroma Cards are available at: https://twenty8.com/product/aroma-cards/

SLP 129: Personal Growth Through Challenging Times with Liz Sefton
Tuesday Nov 23, 2021
Tuesday Nov 23, 2021
‘I think I have been lucky that I’ve always done the work on myself over the years. So I have a sort of collection, a tool kit in place that keeps me positive. Or when things feel tough, I’ve got something to go to, to help me through those difficult times. And definitely, my essential oils, my connection with the Mentoring Group and my love of personal growth I think certainly helps me to keep going in this space.’ Liz Sefton
Based in Victoria and living through the past 20 months under Dan Andrews governance, Liz Sefton opens up about how Victorian’s have been affected harshly with freedom after freedom being taken away through Covid. Liz feels enough is enough and it’s time to stop the segregation and pushing state against state and get back to living with love and courage. Liz is a passionate wellness advocate with a strong focus on nourishment for the mind, body and soul and a deep respect for personal growth.
Liz Sefton is The Nourishing Home and is on a mission to empower people to create, simple and sustainable healthy lifestyle habits that are easily implemented into the family unit. She knows the secrets for success lie in the powers of food and self-care. Liz is a beautiful wife, mum of two and a Chiropractic Assistant at N8 Health in Kyabram. She is also a qualified food coach and health and lifestyle educator for Twenty8 Essentials.
In this interview Liz shares her personal story, her reason why she does what she does. She talks about finding herself, her beautiful family and hubby and how she fell into a love of running.
What I particularly love about this interview is Liz’s passion to learn and expand her awareness. She has a love of food and knows how much of an impact it can have on your health and mindset.
Losing her brother Frank to suicide and with her niece Amelia suffering a brain injury at birth this beautiful soul dedicates a lot of her time to managing charitable events that matter to her.
I had the privilege of meeting Liz at The Wellness Summit and am honoured to call her a dear friend. She completed the Health & Lifestyle Education Program with me and came to France in 2019 with my tour group.
Liz believes in the power of positive mentors and knows throughout her life she has come to understand the profound insights and benefits they have on her life.
Always willing to learn, Liz is inspired to be in the background of big events and came to know she did not want to be the one out the front. She truly is the wind beneath many wings and I for one could not do without her incredible ability to help us all to shine.
Liz says her purpose is to SERVE. It fills her heart, it brings her joy, she loves the stories, interactions and how many of her own a-ha moments she has. Being a part of other people’s events helps to fill her own cup and many have quite literally changed her life and many others.
After completing the Big Red Desert Ultra Marathon Liz discovered she was a lot stronger than she thought. She was more resilient and came to appreciate her own power over her mind.
Her daily self-care rituals include moving every day, meditation, her body boost, affirmations, eating good food, using her essential oils, connection with friends, taking moments for herself including listening to great podcasts such as:
The Self Love Podcast (thankyou angel!), 100 Not Out, The Imperfects, Guy Lawrence, The You Project, Health, Happiness and Human Kind.
We talked about losing her Dad during Covid, her family and how much her sisters are a huge part of her life.
Liz shares about her amazing hubby Jason who is wonderful at supporting their kids through these challenges. She said he has done a lot of work on himself. And it shows. She has done a lot of work on herself over the years and knows it is her saving grace.
A 12 week transformation program is what taught her how to prioritise herself and how it helped her go from being a walker to an incredible ultramarathoner. It is a phenomenal process open to anyone she believes.
Her greatest message to us all is to show up every day with an inspiring intention, allow yourself to grow and connect. Life is constantly evolving and you have a chance in every moment to expand and grow.
Beautiful Liz gives a wonderful account of the Self Love & Wellness Mentorship Program sharing her experiences so beautifully (the link is below).
And Liz shares more specifically her daily self care rituals that include her saying her mornings are all about her…
Wake with a chosen oil and take a few deep breaths
Go to gym, a walk or to Pilates
Do a body boost and set an intention for the day
Put on her Diffuser and she has one at work
Use her Spritzers throughout the day
Create pattern interrupts using her Aroma Mists
She loves cooking and baking
And of course listening to podcasts
Her definition of Self Love is about accepting yourself warts and all but also giving yourself permission to change the things you may not like without guilt. Treat yourself as you would a loved one and a best friend.
Her favourite quote is a Chinese Proverb:
If there is light in the soul, there is beauty in the person
If there is beauty in the person there is harmony in the home
If there is harmony in the home, there is order in the nation
If there is order in the nation, there is peace in this world.

SLP 128: Self Love Quicky – Good Night, Sleep Tight
Thursday Nov 18, 2021
Thursday Nov 18, 2021
Good Night, Sleep Tight
It seems the most natural thing to do to keep up with our fast-paced lives is to sacrifice sleep, so we can cram more into our twenty-four hours. But slow down. Research is now suggesting that even if you miss only a few hours of shut-eye tonight, you are more likely to become ill tomorrow.
On average people spend 24 years of their lives asleep. Something that takes up that much time and is so closely linked to our immune system must be one of the most important things for us to respect.
If ever you have felt ill or under the weather, the body’s instant response is to want to sleep. There is a very good reason for this. Cytokines (immune system hormones) flood throughout the body when an infection is present and also act as a powerful sleep inducer, giving your body the chance to heal and save energy.
Getting a good night’s sleep may be one of the most important things you can do to maintain good health and live longer. It won’t matter if you exercise, eat well, take supplements or meditate, if you don’t get enough sleep for prolonged periods of time, your health will eventually suffer. An immune system without enough sleep is like a car with no fuel. At some point it will say ‘enough!’
It can be as simple as turning down the lights of an evening and using low voltage bulbs or candles, switching off from ALL wifi and EMF stimulating devices is imperative, using a red light filter on your electronic devices and wearing blue blockers can be a game changer for so many. Also, steering away from stimulating beverages like chocolate, coffee and alcohol in the evening can help. Even a meal consisting of fish and green vegetables will help enhance a good night’s sleep. These foods are rich in magnesium and calcium, both necessary to help the body relax and for brain chemistry balance.
Good Sleeping Statistics
The time most adults need to sleep each night is around 8 hours.
An ideal temperature for a good night’s sleep is around 18-23°
Moving in your sleep is normal – most adults will move between 40-70 times a night.
Sleep is vital for the proper functioning of all systems in the body.
Rest from relaying messages to and from the outside world gives the brain a chance to perform maintenance.
Sleep is an important factor linked to longer life.
You know you are not getting enough sleep when you:
feel drowsy throughout the day
have a desire to sleep in
fall asleep within minutes of lying down
find it difficult to get up
are grumpy and irritable for no reason
feel emotional at the drop of a hat
need a cup of coffee first thing in the morning
dose off watching television at night
There are five distinct stages of sleep:
The brain emits various electrical patterns at various times of the day. When you are awake and in a busy thinking state, your brain emits what is known as beta waves. As you go through the various stages of sleep your brain emits different electrical patterns as follows.
Eyes barely move, muscle activity slows and you drift in and out of slumber. You can easily be woken at this stage. Often you are in alpha state (the same state when meditating) just before falling asleep.
Eye movements almost stop, brain waves become slower. You will need to be prodded to be woken.
This is considered one of the stages of deep sleep. Extremely slow brain waves called delta waves can be measured in this phase.
No eye movements at all, muscles are relaxed, blood pressure is at its lowest and heart and breathing rate are at their slowest. This is the stage when the body repairs itself with the aid of hormones.
REM (Rapid Eye Movement) occurs approximately 70-90 minutes after you fall asleep and recurs throughout the night. Breathing becomes more rapid, irregular and shallow. The heart rate increases and blood pressure rises. Brain waves break up and begin to look like those when you are awake, however, while your brain is very active, your body does not move at all in this phase.
To ensure you get a good night’s sleep, get into positive healthy habits before you even get up. Allow yourself to wake as it gets lighter in the morning and as mentioned get up to see the sun rise. Try not to get straight onto your phone or computer first thing. Reclaim your mornings and make nature and self-care your priority, even if only for a short amount of time. It is worth it.
Studies show that if you exercise regularly, you sleep better. Time spent in the outdoors also increases your ability to get a good night’s sleep. Prepare the bedroom for sleep by lighting a vaporiser and placing two drops each of Lavender, Chamomile and Orange an hour before you are ready. Try not to watch television in bed, it may only stimulate you. Reading can do the same, but a lot of people find reading positive and helpful for a deep sleep.
Even though my grandmother would have suggested a hot toddy as the best way to get off to sleep, it might work for some to try a warm milky drink before bed because it contains an enzyme called tryptophan, which induces sleep. Soothing classical music can help calm your nervous system to slow your heart rate, breathing and blood pressure. If you are suffering from sleep disorders like insomnia, some of the more innate natural therapies like kinesiology, acupuncture, chiropractic or herbal medicine may help you to get a better night’s sleep and create more healthy sleep patterns.
I personally found the essential oils of lavender, mandarin, orange, frankincense, chamomile and neroli to be beneficial for sleep. I created a synergy blend called Instant Calm with these oils in it to make it easier and I love to place three drops into my diffuser in my bedroom half an hour before sleep or place a drop or two on a tissue to place under my pillow slip. This is my go-to blend when travelling and on the road a lot with work. Blending 2 drops into a few sprays of Magnesium Health Spray and massaging the soles of my feet just before bed also helps get a better nights sleep.
Ultimately if you are not sleeping well means that something may not be quite right in your life and this is the body’s way of letting you know. Stress and worrying are often the most common causes. Look at your diet and make sure you include plenty of leafy green veges, quality protein and fats and small amounts of quality carbs like sweet potato. Ensure you are getting enough exercise into your day – research suggests just 20mins of fast paced walking will help a better nights sleep. And try your hand at meditating or at least slowing down and quieting the mind.
And finally, being more mindful for just a few moments a day can really support the brain to switch off and become more calm and centered. I cannot stress enough that one of the best times to do this is to watch the sun rise each morning. Allowing that morning light into your eyes helps set all your body’s cell and mitochondrial functions in motion. This sets your natural circadian rhythms, and helps the body naturally want to sleep each evening.
Being grateful mindful and fully present is a beautiful way to calm the mind. Do not underestimate the power of being in nature, really notice a conversation with someone, be aware of what you are eating and be very conscious of how you speak!
All of this teaches us to connect within and when restless or unable to sleep you can try to recapture the essence of these feelings, instead of counting sheep!
