But you can also be devoted to yourself, and this is discipline. If you are setting aside time to move your body, to eat nourishing amazing foods, to cook amazing food with your loved ones, to go out and have that coffee with your friends where you get to have that really connected catch up… this is discipline to your own health, your own mental health and your own cup, you are filling your cup up. And I think adding on that little bit of devotion, disciplined devotion, makes you want to do it even more, it makes the practice come easier. Well, I think discipline can have that connotation you are in trouble perhaps for some people, like when you were a kid you were disciplined, really rigid, no flexibility… but devotion feels loving and flexible. ~ Emma & Carla Papas
What an absolute delight to interview these two beautiful beings. Emma and Carla Papas are the Merrymaker Sisters, and they are quite literally changing the world as they themselves change. In this interview we hear their heartfelt and open viewpoints on their personal journey’s and how their business has literally grown up with them. They are talented, delightful, clever and beautiful souls who are living life out loud with infectious joy!
Here is a little info about these two special souls that they shared with me about their journey so far.
Yes! We are real-life sisters and no, our last name isn’t Merrymaker… it’s actually Papas.
No, we’re not twins, Emma is 2.5 years older than Carla.
Yes, we do fight occasionally, and yes we are actual best friends… and yes! We do work really well together.
Ok, glad we got that out of the way!
We started The Merrymaker Sisters as a hobby in 2013, it began as a blog to simply share our favourite healthy recipes, our thoughts on mindset, dieting, fitness and life in general.
If you’re wondering… Merrymaker means ‘to bring joy’ so that was always the mission (for us and for you).
One day while Carla was sick in bed getting over a botched up nose job (that’s a whole other story for another day) we came across the great philosophies of Joseph Campbell.
The term Follow Your Bliss stood out…
We realised The Merrymaker Sisters was our BLISS.
We understood that if we gave it more energy and attention it would only grow.
And yes, it was a big risk… but we gathered…
… the greater risk wasn’t to leave the ‘stable’ high paying Government jobs (we were on $80k each, pretty good for 22 and 24 year olds!)…
…the greater risk was staying in a mediocre job and ignoring our passion, our hearts and our bliss.
We both sent our resignation emails on the same day, at the exact same time and danced out of the office.
It’s been a wild ride since, filled with ups and downs, easy fun flowing moments to hard stressful days and a lot of WTAF moments.

We’ve created lots but what we’ve done from the very start is to stay true to our hearts (our bliss).

We spent years and years trying all the diets and spending hours in the gym. The goal to lose weight, to be smaller, to take up less space became our main goal in life (“lose 5 kilos” was always top of our NYE resolutions).
We didn’t care about health, we only cared about how many kilos we saw on the scales every morning.
This toxic way of living completely consumed our minds and left no space for magic.
The real toxicity came from our intentions and mindsets behind our ‘healthy‘ actions.
We dieted to lose weight because we never thought we were good enough.
We worked our butts off in the gym, because we didn’t accept what we saw in the mirror… or because of something we’d eaten prior to that moment.
But no matter how much weight we lost, then gained, then lost, then gained… we were never happy.
Through our journey with Yoga, Pilates and Meditation we realised the only thing that truly mattered was how we felt about ourselves right NOW.
And not when we lost a specific number of kgs or fitted into that dress.
Yoga, Pilates and Meditation was the key to realising that right here, right now… we are absolutely, 100% enough (in fact… we are amazing… and you are too).
Our goal is simple, we want you to come on over to our site, read, watch, move with us, cook with us and feel more self-acceptance, self-respect and more joy.
To us, the most important thing is embracing and celebrating who we are – and we want you to do the same.

Their definition of Self Love is the practice of self-acceptance. It’s also self-respect and it’s kindness to yourself. It’s self-compassion, patience, honouring yourself, it’s giving yourself time to just be. It’s all of this and it’s so much more as well. It’s also about tuning in and speaking your truth, living your truth, it’s feeling what’s inside that you can express it. It’s giving yourself the time to do the things you love. It’s living how you want to live.
Their favourite quote is their mantra at the end of every class:
‘Always remember you are amazing just as you are right here and right now.’

‘I think one of the key things that I learned along the journey into welcoming joy back in, was that it was a step-by-step process. It wasn’t a giant leap from where I found myself to, you know, the next day being that joyful mama again at all. It was letting myself have lots of grace. Grace for myself, grace for my children, grace for my friendships, grace for my husband and letting it really be a step by step, small mindful move towards welcoming that back in and letting it be a gradual process and not some big change.’ Naomi Jaques
Any mamas out there feeling more overwhelmed than filled with joy?
That’s exactly where Naomi Jaques found herself – as a mama at the time of three kids under 3yrs of age and feeling like she was merely surviving the days rather than thriving and finding joy in motherhood.
One evening as her family were watching old videos of when the kids were little she found herself laughing at just how cute they were, but then tears filled her eyes because she felt so exhausted and at this point in her life she felt like the person she was watching on the family videos felt like someone else. And she remembered back to that season of motherhood that she was also delighted about being a mama and cooking delicious food for her family but she wondered when the burden of motherhood had fallen on her shoulders and got in the way of her enjoying motherhood.
That’s where Mucho Mama was born – it was that night when she realised she wanted to chase down joy and get it back in my life and get her Mucho Mama back!
From taking better care of herself through to having family meetings each week to using rhythms and rituals Naomi has earned the title mucho mama! With an interview filled with tips and tricks on how to be the best mama you can be, you will hear how important it is to be mindfully aware of creating – and mastering – joy in all aspects as much as you can. She has taken these tools and strategies and created her Chasing Joy Masterclass.
Her definition of Self Love is actually two aspects. There is the overflow aspect which Naomi thinks self-love needs to come from a place of nurturing and taking care of yourself. But is also holding a belief that you were created to live a life of joy and not thinking that you should be living this life of overwhelm. If you are accepting the life of overwhelm that you are experiencing, thinking I just have to get through until it stops then that is not self-love. Self-love is saying I was created for a joy-filled life, and I am going to put out to the world that I want to receive that. And then trust that the people and the resources will come to me and that will allow that transformation to take place.

SLP 208: Self Love Quicky – The Invitation

One of my most favourite books I was ever given in the late 1990’s was a book called ‘The Invitation’ by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. It is a declaration of intent, a map into the longing of the soul. The poem is all about the desire to live passionately, face to face with ourselves and skin to skin with the world.
The Invitation
It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.
It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon.
I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life’s betrayals or have become shrivelled and closed from fear of further pain.
I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it, or fade it, or fix it.
I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own; if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, be realistic, remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true
I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself. If you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see Beauty even when it is not pretty every day. And if you can source your own life from its presence.
I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand at the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, ‘Yes.’
It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone and do what needs to be done to feed the children.
It doesn’t interest me who you know or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand in the centre of the fire with me and not shrink back.
It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

‘This is the challenge, but this is the practice and the first go-to is creating more space in between everything. Of course, there’s plenty of opportunity to get swept up in all of that, whether it’s happening on the outside of you or in thoughts or emotions on the inside of you, it’s a busy world inside and out. So, to create space for those higher ways of being, and those higher intentions to flourish and thrive from, without the space they just get squeezed out and we revert to our old habits and patterns and busyness and reactions. So, it’s about making space and it can be done in the simplest of ways.’ Erin Lee
Erin Lee qualified as a marine biologist which she loved and speaks very fondly of her time in that underwater world. But it wasn’t long after that her eyes were truly opened by yoga, which made her feel instantly like the sky was brighter. It was her love of nature and the deeper immersing of the ocean environment that formed the foundation of her love for yoga. In Erin’s opinion they have the same laws and connect to something deep within our souls to create more space.
This beautiful podcast dives deep into the power of breath, energy and yoga and what it means to connect within and create more space. We also talk about the sudden loss of Erin’s husband and father of her two girls and how yoga and breath supported her to a new place of understanding.
Erin Lee is the founder of The Mindful Yoga School, a yoga, mindfulness and meditation training centre based on the Sunshine Coast. She leads yoga teacher training and mediation & mindfulness teacher training programs, as well as other programs, classes and events.
You’ll also find her collaborating with many talented musicians on the Sunshine Coast at yoga-sound immersion events and featuring at some of Australia’s most prominent festivals such as Woodford Folk Festival, PranaFest and YogaFests.
Erin is also the author of the brand-new book, ‘The Little Book of Big Intentions’ – a divinely illustrated book that invites you to contemplate and embody 27 intentional qualities, for purposeful living. Her inspiration for the book landed after many years of sharing intention embodiment in her mindful yoga classes.
She’s also a mum to two teenage daughters, lives by the beach and finds joy in life’s simple pleasures!
Her definition of Self Love is when we can pair back the doing and rest in that place of simplicity and just being present. Where we can tap into love there. Self-love is like yoga – it is an inner journey first – it is inner housekeeping of the soul. Instead of it being about self-preservation space, but more a return to the love that connects us all. And connecting into the vibration of love. Doing it first in our body and mind and then be in selfless service of others.

Let’s face it there are no rulebooks to download on the internet on How to Be a Perfect Person and Parent, or How to Perfectly Manage Guilt. Let’s face it, if you are a people-pleaser guilt can be especially difficult for you. Self-guilt can be paralysing if left unchecked. Research shows that we, collectively, spend on average up to five hours a week, at a minimum, in a state of guilt so here are a few tips on how to manage guilt.
Long-term self-guilt appears as an internal dialogue that leaves us feeling lonely and sad. Worst of all, it’s happening right there inside of us; right between our own two ears.
So, what to do with feelings of guilt or shame? When you explore your own self-guilt, I encourage you to look at it with an open heart and mind, and explore how this feeling can be turned around and made to work for you. Diving into the tools of the self-love circle in the book ‘The Art Of Self Love’, you’ll see how every experience and emotion is providing us with contrast and if we look, we can find the lesson it’s trying to teach us.
I often find myself questioning the gut reaction of guilt. You know, that feeling in the pit of your stomach that goes up into your heart. That feeling is often a good barometer to determine whether next time you could do something a little better, or to see if that guilt is being driven by your own response to someone else’s behaviour.

We all know that the desire to learn and work on oneself can come from a place of pain and crisis. What we may not know is how or when that will strike. Shan Clayton hit rock bottom at the age of 33. She knew no one would come and save her and quickly recognised she was the one who had to make a change and take control and responsibility for herself.
To the outside word she was fully polished and rockin it. She realises now it took her twenty years to get to the bottom of the pit and 10 years to crawl back out of it. She believes it is all a process. Looking back she felt like she was wearing a blind fold. She knew she needed to stop fighting herself and lean into it. It was the stopping that gave her the space to decide what to do. The perfectionist within had to give int to this.
As humans we go for the quick fix but that does not always serve us long term. Shan believes most people are terrified of the monster that lurks in the shadows. But if we just realised we can shine a light within and realise it is not that bad at all.
We talk about the ‘parts party’ analogy where we get to discover and observe all the different parts which comes from the internal family systems. Shan loves people to just explore all parts of you and appreciate they all play a role and find the humour in it all.
There are many tips and wonderful ideas in this interview that will support you to discover more of the real you.
Shan Clayton is a highly skilled therapist and mindset coach who specialises in supporting clients who are motivated to overcome the emotional root causes of persistent stress, anxiety, and depression, and learn to express themselves fully, develop self-acceptance and self-love, and start living with enthusiasm and drive once again.
She holds qualifications in Counselling, Mindfulness Therapies, NLP Coaching, Tine Line Therapy and Advanced Hypnosis and has a wealth of life experience to draw from, including working in higher education, project management and hospitality.
She is the driving force behind THINK Coaching & Hypnotherapy, an online hub for behavioural transformation, which she operates alongside her lifelong friend and colleague, Leanne Davis.
Together, they offer quality transformation programs for individuals and couples as well as their fortnightly THINK Night In, an evening group learning and coaching space offered free of charge to anyone wishing to put their toe in the water.
Shan is a passionate mental health and wellbeing advocate who believes personal growth and transformation are possible even in the face of low self-worth, uncertainty, procrastination, and self-sabotaging habits.
She has overcome many challenges, including chronic depression, generalised anxiety disorder and alcohol and drug misuse. She knows well the journey involved in conquering fears and converting inner demons to inner strengths.
The key to living well, Shan says, is to give ourselves permission to express all that we are, even the less dazzling parts of ourselves, for no-one else’s sake but our own, because it’s through the fullest expression of who we are that we resolve any need to suppress, which is what leads to emotional and mental upset in the first place.
Her definition of Self Love is to accept ALL of me, and I mean ALL of me. It is about loving and nurturing and allowing space for the expression for ALL the parts of who I am. To love oneself is to let yourself have that space.

This week my husband and I packed up and farewelled our son to follow his dream to play professional rugby in NZ. It was a mixture of excitement and sadness, and I will add this was not in the handbook of parenting! So today I share a couple of my favourite quotes and why it is so important to give our children roots and wings.
Henry Ward Beecher once wrote, “There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots…the other, wings.”
I also love the Kahlil Gibran quote which really gets to the soul…

“I think those two words are absolutely perfect, and the other word I would add in there that I embrace is community. When you’re in that environment, you know your community is called upon, there is a real… you know as much as where we were… our closest neighbour was 5km away. It doesn’t seem far, but it is quite far. And then the next neighbour was maybe 5 or 10 kms from that. But you knew you could always call your neighbour and they would be over to help with any of the jobs that were on the farm. The women would come over if we were shearing and there would be 12 shearers in the shearing shed. All the women would get together and make the lunch and make the sweets and make the treats. And all the children from the neighbouring surrounds would come and help in the shearing as well. So, it was a real community that I was brought up with. You know the ability to freely and openly talk to people and ask questions of people because you felt a connection. So absolutely, tenacity and resilience were absolutely there, but I think community for me is one that stands out as well.”
Keeta Gibson started life on the land. She grew up in regional New South Wales with sheep, horses, dogs and chooks. Two values that was installed throughout her childhood was community and a hard work ethic, something she embodies still to this day. She’s also been a project manager, a mortgage broker, a financial planner and loves world economics. You are going to love her insights, knowledge and open-hearted way in which she views money, property and business.
She began renovating property for fun in 2003 when she returned home to Australia after being an expat for several years. Keeta is also an experienced investor, successful entrepreneur and retired triathlete.
Keeta has been in business for more than 15 years. She has started businesses and purchased businesses; she has invested in them, grown them and turned them around. She has witnessed and experienced both successes and failures, and she has learned the most from her failures.
Keeta was twelve years old when she had her first experience with starting a business and enlisting joint venture partners. Raised in regional Australia on a large farm her entrepreneurial skills were developed.
Through her business, Ocean Buyers Agency, she fulfills her absolute passion of purchasing property and helping people achieve strong outcomes.
Keeta is a dynamic, enthusiastic, vivacious and inspirational personality, and her personal motivation is based on H.O.P.E – ‘Helping Other People Everyday’.
She has completed a Bachelor of Applied Science – Computing, Diploma of Financial Planning, Advanced Diploma in Interior Design, has secured her Real Estate Agent License all of which inform Keeta’s professional and qualified approach.

SLP 202: Self Love Quicky – German Chamomile

German chamomile is extracted from the dried flower heads. It is an incredible deep blue colour, which is formed from matricin during the steam distiliation process which is caused by a component called chamazulene.
German chamomile has a more distinct medicinal, herbal aroma compared to the sweeter, more floral aroma of Roman chamomile. Whilst both are very soothing and calming oils German chamomile is known for its powerful analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and anti-allergenic qualities.
Potent, yet gentle German chamomile is a highly effective medicinal oil excellent to use safely with lavender and orange on small children. One drop of each in 10mls of a carrier oil like sweet almond, macadamia or jojoba oil would make a calming massage blend, perfect after a bath and to prepare for sleep. You could use these same oils in a diffuser to help create a calm, cleansed and refreshed environment.
For tummy upsets make a massage blend using 2 drops German chamomile, 1 drop lavender and 1 drop peppermint and massage gently into the stomach region in a clockwise direction.
This beautiful oil is beneficial in treating swollen joints, sprains and muscle tears making it an ideal addition to a cup of magnesium salts when bathing.
German chamomile is excellent for people with sensitive, inflamed or irritated skin. Add 2 drops to 2 drops each of lavender and frankincense in a warm compress and place over the effected area. Known for its qualities as a vaso-constrictor it can help reduce the redness of cheeks caused by enlarged blood vessels.
For the treatment of slow healing wounds and skin conditions like ingrown toenails and abscesses you can use German chamomile, patchouli and tea tree as an effective wash.
For a wonderful hair mask and scalp treatment mix 2 drops each of German chamomile, rosemary and geranium into 20mls of jojoba or coconut oil. Massage into the scalp and to the hair ends, comb through. For best results leave on overnight. Remember to apply shampoo onto the oiled head before adding water. Shampoo twice and condition as normal.
A refreshing blend to help heal skin conditions is 2 drops German chamomile, 2 drops lavender, 1 drop rose and 1 drop sandalwood into a 50ml spritzer bottle filled with water. Shake and spritz over the effected area to soothe, calm and heal.
To relieve the symptoms of a headache or migraine mix 2 drops of German chamomile with 2 drops of peppermint into a small bowl of cool water. Use a face washer or muslin cloth dipped into the bowl then squeeze excess water and compress across forehead. Repeat as necessary.
One of the best oils to help calm negative thoughts, agitation, nervous tension and insomnia German chamomile is a must-have in any home aroma first aid kit.

‘It made me really good at what I did because part of my natural state of being is I’m very caring and I have a lot of empathy. And so, it made me really good at finance. And then the extra layer of what my definition of success is meant that I really showed up. And I showed up until 11’o’clock at night, 12’o’clock at night, 1am in the morning, 2am in the morning, that wasn’t uncommon for me to work crazy hours like that, and what that meant was of course was my health got eroded over time. And there was a couple of big events that happened like the GFC, that was a really challenging time, and some other big events and with each big event it just kind of jolted me into I guess this state of adrenal fatigue and the beginnings of burnout. And then one day I just couldn’t get out of bed.’ Linda Ireland
Linda Ireland found herself in a conundrum wondering who she was and what she really wanted. She championed the business world until it took its toll and with a financial degree and a number of highly successful businesses behind her the need to stop and heal took priority. She has built and sold many businesses over the years, and since retiring early, she continues to work part-time in her natural haircare company, BodFood.
In this interview we discover what has been Linda’s drivers and how she has created wealth and success. She actually starts all of her workshops now asking participants for their definition of wealth and then their definition of success. She believes these two questions are a brilliant place to start when it comes to honouring our wants and needs.
Linda believes health should be our number one priority. The day doesn’t start unless she has done her own self-care rituals like a walk on the beach, meditation and being present. She is really conscious of being her best self and after confronting her health challenges she has now realised how serious she needed to take on the advice of experts. And that included selling her business to begin her journey of healing.
It wasn’t just physical healing either there were many layers to her overall healing journey. Over four years she discovered it was way deeper than she could have ever imagined. She gradually healed the Hashimoto’s and chronic fatigue and is very aware of the power in listening to the body’s signs.
She has also come to realise how many people are experiencing the same health issues as she did. At the simplest level it is about ignoring the signs and a body in chronic stress is not good. There seems to be this expectation to work really hard and to always show up. This can also lead to overwhelm, depression and anxiety.
Linda talks about the turning points that directed her on a healing path and needing help. She also talks about the power of being a mum and leading by example. She remembers having to choose between being a serious business-woman or a yoga teacher and at the time she felt she had to abandon the yoga world. Then when her health became so compromised in the business world she realised she needed to sell this business and get back to her yoga world.
She believes there is no point worrying about things until or unless they happen. There is no need to bring it into this present moment and ruin what is happening right now.
We discuss why worrying or being busy is seen as a badge of honour. Linda tries to steer away from this now and practices being very present as often as she can. She suggests asking these two questions when challenged. 1. Is it yours? And 2. Is it serving you?
Linda shares the Conscious Initiatives programs that she offers which is about living from a conscious space in all aspects. Get out of the past or the future and ask yourself what is relevant right now? Goals are important to work out where you are going but being consciously present is even more powerful in her humble opinion.
And when you’re truly present you are connected into that higher self, be it God, soul, Universe… whatever word you would like to use. And then it is like getting into that Jetstream, into flow.
Linda has a set of choices she makes every day that are important in her life and these include.

Living your true nature and purpose
And each day focus on one of these and ask what is the next obvious action you need to take to make it happen
The always connect into the part of you that wants you to be the best
It is important to Linda to continuously focus on two things… to create and contribute. And then once you learn it, it seems obvious that you would share it.

Using the tools of self-care
Being fully present
Showing up
Get present daily to that consciousness
Get next clear action to take
Seek help from coaches who have been successful in your industry
She talks about her new project BodFood.
Although impressive to read, Linda is quick to point out that her business success was far from smooth sailing. From starting so young, Linda learned the ropes of a very tough industry, made instinctively good decisions and impulsive bad ones. Long hours, burnout, chronic stress, pressure and unforeseen global events severely challenged her mental health, physical health, personal relationships, and love for life.
Linda approaches work projects in the same way that an artist might look at a canvas: life and all of its experiences are a creative process. She attributes this attitude as the key to why she achieved so much success in her career.
Linda has explored many different creative projects, from owning a yoga studio to one of the largest finance brokerages in Australia; selling one of their businesses to a listed company to running a marathon with no prior practice.
Today, Linda dedicates her working life not only to BodFood but also to sharing what she has learned in both business and quantum universes through Conscious Initiative‘s workshops. She pays forward the tools she gained through sharing stories, methods, philosophies and principles with anyone who wants to benefit from them.
Her definition of Self Love is showing up and doing your meditation and yoga. Taking that time to connect with that consciousness and take loving action to live in your true nature and purpose. And to always have deep, deep compassion for oneself.
