SLP 149: A Students Welfare Is Based On A Parents Wellbeing with Meg Durham
Tuesday Feb 01, 2022
Tuesday Feb 01, 2022
‘It’s about everybody feeling included in the community, because we know that the most important factor in a student’s wellbeing journey is the wellbeing of the parents. We cannot ignore that fact. Like that is so important. So that’s where I think schools have the opportunity to be a community of learning where they can provide learning, not just for the students but for parents and for the teachers, for everybody to continue to learn and grow.’
Meg Durham is a wellness speaker, educator and coach. She is known for bringing out the best in others. She is an expert in the area of wellbeing education and wellbeing coaching. Meg has a unique skill set that she has developed from working in a variety of teaching roles across Australia and now heads Open Minded Education.
It was inevitable that Meg Durham would become a teacher. Being the youngest of four children, and because she was the baby, the golden child, she played a lot of schools growing up. This led to a genuine love of educating and her dream of being a real teacher came true. But as Meg explains, nothing can prepare you for that first week of your first job as a teacher. The intensity of school was way bigger than she ever expected so her mission now is to focus on student, teacher and parent wellbeing.
Dealing with the number of issues that pop up that you have never come up against before was hugely confronting. The job is so big, and the problem is there is no preparation for the human element of being a teacher.
Meg said she was prepared with the academic content as a science and PE teacher but was not taught how to deal with the human content, with young people’s lives, parents who are breaking and crying, going through transitions of separation or colleagues going through their own issues. It is incredibly hard to teach, and learn, with these challenges.
This rather confronting introduction to teacher life forced Meg to believe there had to be a better way. Surely there were skills and strategies she could learn. She was so frustrated she decided to go on and study her Masters in Student Wellbeing. She realised how much more there was for teachers, parents and students to live well.
An interesting point Meg makes is that school has not necessarily served everyone she knows. Some of the people she looks up to the most are in fact school drop-outs. This got her even more curious to understand the layers and complexities of school. Everybody’s experience is so different.
Being a rural girl, she looks at schools in much the same way she looks at farms where the weather and soil effect everything. In context, if the school is the farm, leadership is the weather and staff are the soil, then this is what creates the kind of environment for the students. The student will then have the opportunity to thrive, or not, based on this environment.
Every school and every classroom is so different and yet Meg believes there is still a lot of work to be done in the wellbeing space. Schools are not there to just give out information. We have come from the origin where the teacher was the font of all knowledge. There was no internet or You Tube. Teachers had the information and students had to listen. And if students didn’t listen there was a physical punishment. It was very much a power over model.
We have come so far in many ways, but we still need to honour the human element, give students power, walk with them in a shared learning experience and get the work done that needs to be done.
One of the silver linings of covid is the idea around student wellbeing. How to help students with their life at school and outside of school is becoming more and more important.
A school is a system and every human in that system has an impact which creates a ripple effect. The Principal’s impact can be huge. It can be incredible or detrimental depending on their leadership ability. Meg believes true leadership needs to be led with the head and heart not just the head and when students are feeling well, they respond so much better. The best Principals have the biggest and best impact.
The greatest schools create a great community too. Parents working with teachers, teachers working with leadership instead of us versus them. Everyone in the community needs to feel a part of this community. Schools have the opportunity to be a community of learning.
Dynamics have really caused disruption in the system, but it is important to note everyone is doing the best they can in that moment. When this happens, we need to get curious around why that behaviour is being shown whether it is the student, parent or teacher. It is part of human nature.
If we can get to the point where we can acknowledge, accept and show compassion to each other then, that will be a good thing. We have to remember we are all on the same team, all there for the benefits of young people, to educate the future to create a future, to prepare these young people for life. We are not there to protect them from life, we are there to prepare them for life.
The 5 P’s For Preparation For Life
1. Perfection
2. Pleasing
3. Pretending
4. Performing
5. Producing
We talk about how to prepare our students to be better, by acknowledging we ourselves need to be better parents. It starts with how parents are taking care of themselves. Living the way they want their children to live their lives and not sacrificing their needs, desires and wants in order to just serve them.
When they do, children look to their parents and don’t want to be adults. They don’t want that life and question why they would want that? Parents need to take care, get to know and honour themselves… this is key. Parents need to be the role model.
To stay on top of this everything comes back to the Battery strategy. Depending on the answers to these 5 questions will highlight how you are feeling, functioning and relating on any given day.
In the last 24 hours answer these questions:
1. Have you had enough sleep?
2. Have you moved your body?
3. Have you nourished your body?
4. Had some rest?
5. Had some form of connection?
The battery is vital. If we want to prepare our young people for life, we need to take care of ourselves better and show them how to recharge the battery daily and live well with amazing energy.
A lot of the things we do that are good for us require that energy and we need to take care of ourselves so we can move through the pleasures and discomforts of life.
If we can get young people feeling good and energetic and hopeful about the future their world literally opens up. Meg believes it is important to charge your energy so you can charge your life and your children’s.
Meg runs ‘Mind Fit’ and ‘Thrive By Design’ Programs for teachers and parents which are available here for more information: https://openmindeducation.com/#services
Supporting parents means normalising the struggle, realising that no one is perfect. Parenting is so hard, there are brutal moments. Meg believes it is important for parents to connect, share, laugh and learn together too.
We talk about the kids who are struggling at school. Meg says trauma informed behaviour is a message that these kids are more likely feeling the effects of being:
– Stressed
– Things are not working out for them
– They cannot sit in a classroom
– Find it hard to even get to school
– Their resting heart rate is 120 not the normal 70.
– Have anxiety
– Struggle with perfectionism
– Have eating disorders
Kids need to feel connected to their body and notice when they are stressed and also when they are calm. Bringing these physical elements together with the wellbeing space helps these beautiful kids to have the opportunity to heal, learn and thrive.
Meg states there is no school without issues. If we can work in a way that supports our young people, then it will be a whole lot better. It is important to build the trust and believe in them with unconditional positive regard, that they, as a human, are ok and worthy and loveable.
The impact of teachers themselves is profound. But there are a lot of teachers questioning if they can keep going, handle the intensity, adapt with covid and manage feeling the pressure. There are a whole cohort of teachers questioning if this is really for them which is really sad according to Meg.
She says there are 3 pillars to continue taking the Wellbeing steps:
1. Skills
2. Strategy
3. Support
A good teacher is always available. Teachers who are energised have clarity and vision. We can build a community of energised educators that change lives.
On the topic of home schooling it has been proven our youngest students do well at home, however our adolescence are not designed to be in small spaces with adults. During Covid our teens have had their wings clipped and there is going to be an amazing adjustment as we navigate our way out of this. There will be a rapid catch up and it is important we are open to what to do.
We have to question if this is indeed the right thing for us to consider. We need to ask if this is going to work for the parents. If it doesn’t work for the parents, it will not work for the children. Is it financially possible to home school? This is why the school system, regardless of its challenges, allows parents to work if they choose. You just need to ask the question… can you home school in a way that serves everybody?
Meg’s definition of Self Love is knowing it is a process of getting to know yourself, accepting yourself – who you were, who you are and who you are becoming – and appreciating yourself. Your love is not determined by what you produce or get done on your to-do list. It starts with liking yourself. Honour yourself, care for yourself, listen to the whispers and honour them. It sounds easy… regard yourself, respect yourself, take care of yourself… and yet it can be really hard and complex especially when marinating in a system and culture that to love yourself is arrogant. We have to move beyond that.
We openly discuss the huge topic of technology and social media. No one is immune to the pull of technology. There are parts that are beautiful with connection and openness and seeing different people in the world. In previous generations you only saw what you saw. However, the challenges of comparison and not being good enough can be incredibly difficult to understand for anyone let alone young people.
Brene Brown talks about the difference between fitting in and belonging.
There are strengths and challenges, but it is more around the how, when and why they are using technology that should be addressed. It is also most challenging when we as parents are exhausted and depleted.
Technology feels good in the moment, explains Meg, but it’s a bit like sugar, you feel the urge and crave the temporary buzz. And then the drop is much the same as a sugar fix. Start to notice out of all your technology what is the trigger? Is it your emails? For kids it could be Tik Tok? Technology is part of the attention economy. In order to reclaim our own attention we need to get back to the basics, and recharge the battery, doing the best with what we’ve got and role modelling the behaviour we prefer.
Technology also takes us away from meaningful connection and what we need to do. Become more mindful of your own use of technology.
We go back to the conversation around how we punished in school in decades gone by. It was acceptable to hit children, it was the norm. But we have learned now it is not helpful, it is really corrosive to relationships, and relationships are the foundation of learning. Physical punishment is not the answer.
When young people behave inappropriately, we as adults and teachers can all get into the soup of fear and shut it down. There are some who just fall apart and please their way out of it too. Neither serve anyone.
To get the best out of young people it is having that firmness with boundaries but also that kindness, that you are human. Addressing the behaviour without disrupting the relationship takes practice.
We talk about vulnerability and open-hearted conversations and how we can do so much better when we are authentic and show up the best way we can. We talk about male teachers and the wellbeing space for both male and female teachers who have such a high emotional labour.
We also talk about homework… that everlasting bug bear for so many students and parents!
Meg’s final message is to keep listening to the whispers, your body and heart knows what it yearns for, take courageous action. Keep showing up. Greatness requires consistency. Consistency requires courage.
Her favourite quote is: If it is meant to be it is up to me.

SLP 148: Self Love Quicky – Living Above The Line
Thursday Jan 27, 2022
Thursday Jan 27, 2022
The concept of living above the line and below the line is one of the most fundamental concepts in conscious living. When we are below the line we are often closed, defensive, and committed to being right. On the contrary, when we are living above the line we are more open, curious, and committed to learning. In this podcast we look at how we can make an effort to live more above the line.
Below the line behaviours often show up as a victimhood mentality or failure to take personal responsibility. When someone operates from below the line they view life through the lens of a victim, always being at the affect of life and interpreting it through a “to me” lens.
They are closed, defensive, and committed to being right. Below the line behaviours are common, in fact it is actually the default state of being for almost everyone. Because we’re so committed to being right, we can even fool ourselves into thinking that we’re above the line when we’re actually below the line!
When we’re below the line, we view ourselves as a victim and don’t take personal responsibility for our actions. This manifests itself in the below the line behaviours of denying, blaming, and making excuses which are all part of an attempt for our ego to defend itself by being right. This creates a negative feedback loop where our below the line behaviours influence our below the line thoughts, and vice versa.
Below the line thinking often shows up in our desire to be right. Being right allows us to protect our ego, which satisfies our survival instincts. Below the line behaviours typically lead to several ways of thinking or finding yourself saying things like:
It’s not my fault
I’m right
They’re wrong
I know everything there is to know about the situation
It has to happen my way
Sadly below the line behaviours and thinking do nothing to contribute to our success and joy. They distort our view of reality and hinder us from achieving our true potential.
Above the line behaviours show a real openness, a security in one’s self, and the taking on of personal responsibility. When someone operates from above the line they view life through the lens of a creator, as someone who is able to impact and learn from their environment, interpreting life through a “by me” lens.
They are more open, curious, and committed to learning. Above the line behaviour doesn’t necessarily come naturally to us, because we have to work hard to achieve above the line thinking and above the line behaviour. When we do though, above the line behaviour is about taking ownership, accountability, and responsibility for one’s actions.
Above the line thinking is best exemplified in our openness and eagerness to learn. When not hindered by the urge to defend our ego and always be right, we are able to investigate the world and our own actions with curiosity and joy. We have the freedom to critique and look into our own words and actions because we aren’t threatened by the possibility of being wrong. With this perspective in mind, above the line behaviours often play out with thinking in ways like:
What did I do to contribute to this?
What else might be going on in this situation that I’m not aware of?
What could I be doing differently?
How can I take ownership and responsibility for what is happening?
Above the line behaviours and thinking encourage and empower us to ask questions we might not like the answers to, but whose answers will ultimately help us.
Asking questions is evidence of above the line behaviour that transforms both personal relationships and large organizations. Just as below the line behaviour and thinking results in a negative feedback loop, above the line behaviour and thinking results in a positive feedback loop. Its impact snowballs and grows exponentially with time, which inevitably can take us from good to better to great!
Above the line behaviour means being open, curious, and committed to learning, and nearly all situations can be improved by approaching them with this perspective in mind.

SLP 147: The Ability To Embrace Change with Tom Cronin
Tuesday Jan 25, 2022
Tuesday Jan 25, 2022
‘When we say we don’t have a second chance, there’s a very big variable in that and a very big grey area. There’s always the chance to evolve and grow, it’s whether we are able to hear it and to embrace that and to get the message that’s embedded in the experience. We generally are quite resistant to change. There’s a beautiful quote from my meditation teacher, ‘Suffering is proportional to our resistance to change. And happiness is proportional to our ability to embrace change.’
Tom Cronin is known as the King of Calm! But life has not always been this way, and it has taken him a lot of internal work to claim this title.
If you picture the ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ you will picture his previous life. As a broker in finance his life was highly stimulating filled with not only the pressures of the job but the culture in the job which included lots of drugs, drinking, late nights and partying. So, these compounding layers of hyperstimulation eventually lead to him becoming a complete nervous wreck. He experienced nervous anxiety, panic attacks and insomnia which culminated into a deep dark depression and eventually a nervous breakdown.
This was a critical turning point, where it could be seen as a break down or break through moment. It was a phenomenal shift. He discovered meditation and eastern philosophy and really dove deep into the nature of the mind, the nervous system and the body and what it took to have optimal health. This meant mental and physical health where so much goes through the mind.
Tom has come to realise that anyone going through a breakdown or crisis moment there is nothing that is not supporting you, it is a deep evolutionary process. We can ask the question how is this guiding me? How is this helping me? How is this helping me to progress forward?
By nature, Tom is a Mr Fix-It? He did not realise he had such a big a problem until he hit this breakdown moment. He assumed he was capable and coping with this life, so the Universe had to make it bad enough for him to wake up and guide him forward. To make him realise his what he is here to do and what his full potential was.
He ignored it and was in a constant state of sensory pleasures and ego delights and eventually the Universe, which is a beautiful, guiding, maternal, clever force of intelligence that is always trying to support and help us, made it worse until he realised there was a problem. When he realised there was a problem that was when he started to look for solutions. Pain is actually an intelligent system to help us move forward and progress.
There is a chance there for all of us… A Rishi, a wise one… says ‘You do not need cataclysmic events but just tiny intuitive hints.’ It is this intuitive pre-emptive capacity to see that helps us to see more. Life is a constant meandering process, and it is our resistance to the meander that causes suffering.
This journey, this deep dive into what it all means inspired Tom to create the film The Portal which is available to watch here: https://entertheportal.com/
Tom says, ‘We are in a vast epoch of time that is an evolutionary sequence of realising the greater awareness and truth. Being free of the ignorance which is a by-product of suffering. We will eventually move into a time of greater consciousness, but we are not quite there yet.’ With two 19year olds Tom believes children are going through their own transformation quicker than we ever have. They get it more quickly.
We talk around the idea of nature vs nurture and Tom gives beautiful examples of how we can understand the whole chicken or the egg process. He believes maybe it is both. Souls choose their journey in accordance to previous experiences. There are 100 million people on the Calm app which was not there so long ago. We are seeing a vast rapid expansion of the mind for many in today’s time.
We talk about the idea of ‘practice’ and Tom describes Sadhana a daily routine to make the play of life better. Things like practicing journaling, yoga, meditation, eating well are all daily routines that help us to play the game of life at a better and more enhanced level.
As already stated, it was an immense suffering period during his breakdown with extreme anxiety, depression and panic attacks Tom explains that was a shift that caused him to look at what he was doing. The Universe divinely sent a documentary on a business operator meditating and this was his light bulb moment.
He researched many different forms of meditation and found the idea of transcending was going to become an essential part of his day. He explains how he allocated his time towards with 24 hours a day, 72 x 22 mins portion of time and like all of us to find fulfilment through an experience or an acquisition.
He realised what he was looking for in fulfilment in the wrong places was not being found and realised he had to look within. It wasn’t until he did the in-quiry to enquire and question inwardly, through the meditation experience to find truth, bliss and joy which he found was also innate.
Due to the process of enquiry a child will be raised to know what the McDonalds arches are before they understand their surname as opposed to in-quire.
We talk about spiritual capitalism. This is a time when spirituality meets Western culture and capitalism. In only the last 30-40 years have we seen this integrate into the household. It is a new phenomenon. They are not two separate things. Spirituality and money are not separate, it is really just expression and manifestation of formless into form.
A lot of us are carrying a deep code around lack and fear of not having enough. It is an amazing time to be in the world to see how careers and life purpose and spirituality is a new frontier that we are all trying to work out now.
We talk about how do we possibly put a price on the kind of work Tom does, understanding the consciousness and opening of our hearts, minds and souls? How do we value spirituality? And this work? What we are trying to do is to put a value on what we are offering. Tom explains his kind of service with his business coaching clients. A dentist, lawyer, consultant can do it, so in a sense he is packaging up in bundles of time and experience something that provides fulfilment and enhancement of life.
We talk about the idea of belonging and tribal culture and passing on tribal wisdom. We also have to acknowledge we are in a very different world explains Tom. We cannot rely on our own small tribe as it will limit our capacity to learn. We do not have individual tribes anymore, we have one tribe. So, we can outsource what we want to learn from other people. We are seeing a niching down of knowledge acquisition into a self-paced learning style in a global tribe which allows us to seek the information we are after.
We of course, talk Covid. There is a concentration of media to heighten a certain situation and for whatever reason that is happening is for each person to discern and work out. Tom describes his parents watching four different news channels. It was night after night after night that there was the repetition of the same story. Using sensational bold and bright news information with repetition of the fear and chaos and trauma. We are seeing a concentration of that information flow. This creates a mass formation which affects psychology based upon marketing and media. Who has the most money? Coca Cola spends $300m a year telling us theirs is the best.
Tom explains the power and frequency of love. The thing that is missing is the essence of being which is love which is something that already exists. If we look at the short amount of time that humans are on this planet using words and then to describe the power of what this four-letter word of love means. There is complexity. In the unbound and formless there is a chance to find the simplicity in the complexity.
Love is something we need to realise is the very essence of our being. Within that complexity is all sorts of a myriad of sensations and emotions that arise with different viewpoints. There are times for various responses in amongst all of this. There is a disconnect of what is inherently us and a disconnect and how we interact in the world.
His definition of Self Love is like the wave looking for the ocean. It’s not that we need to find love, we need to realise that we are love. Self-love is the awakening to the Self (the unbounded nature of your divine quality which is ultimately love). Love is Self and Self is love, the embodiment of love.
Tom’s work is incredible and he wanted to share his message with the world when he came out of finance. He wrote 6 books, created an app, ran retreats, online program taught workshops… so many ways he wanted to get his message out there. He got lured into the entrepreneurial world. He got carried away. The film was a big journey. It was a 9-year process getting it out to the world. Like ‘The Secret’ he wanted to get the message of The Portal out into millions of households. Here is the link to watch it: www.entertheportal.com
It was his intention and passion to create this film for many years. He accepts he is also quite stubborn and finishing the project and fulfilling that commitment was also to honour and respect the investors to ensure it was completed.
To summarise this film it is the ability to free ourselves of suffering which comes through this portal into stillness into the state of realisation the awareness of being. It is within us all. The meditation Tom teaches is one of the portals and gateways to what is already inherently within us. This is where we access wisdom, love, creativity and adaptability. Tom’s suffering came from not knowing how to get to that point and this is what has inspired him to help so many people.
A quote from Maharishi, ‘All that we are is a result of what we have thought. The mind is everything, what we think we become.’
Tom explains the intention of the meditation. The mind is the architect of our life. We cannot build a building without the design. A field of formlessness and intelligence with no form and structure. The thought is the first initial extraction point and the most subtle form before it is manifested into form. We need to get more intentional with our thoughts which allows us to be more intentional with our life.
The daily rituals Tom practices include working on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual areas:
Reading positive books to elevate and inspire
Programs to learn and continue improving
Spiritual meditation, yoga, breathwork
Physical wellbeing and backing his immune and digestive system in an optimal state including saunas, gym, vitamins, using essential oils
His final message is wherever you are and whatever state you are in, it is changeable, and it is changeable for the better. And there are tools and guidance and systems that are here to help and support you. No matter what your experience keep asking how is this helping me, how is this supporting me, how is it part of my evolution as painful as this is? And being really open to listening in to the messages you get, either your own intuition or some other divine intervention.
The Universe is always here to support and guide and elevate and assist you. You came here in the manifestation of the divine to experience joy and delight and love of life. Try to find the lightness in living.
The dark night moments can be difficult and challenging and letting go is an ongoing process we will go through. Find support when you are and know that on the other side of that suffering and pain is the next level of being more awake, more aware, more loving, more gentle less attached and less conditioned by the past and programs.

His favourite quote is a Sanskrit quote that means:
Established in being, perform action. This means to find fulfilment first within the state of being and then perform action from a state of fulfilment. We go into action to express fulfilment.

SLP 146: Self Love Quicky – Perception Is Projection
Thursday Jan 20, 2022
Thursday Jan 20, 2022
Carl Jung said, ‘We cannot see the world as it is, but who we are.’ In this week’s quicky we explore what that means for each of us and how reality looks through our own eyes which is purely determined on how we perceive it. This one is a mind bender!
We have to remind ourselves the world is not the way it is, but what we are. In this Quicky we take a look at how your experience of the world is based on your internal representation, and how your personality will determine the reality you experience.
It might be hard to imagine we create our world but we just have to remember we are never passively perceiving the world we are actively generating it. It is all an hallucination let’s break that down… hell-ucination – it is hell until you shine a light on it. Now a lot of the hallucinations we have can be helpful but not all. And then we will delete, distort and generalise using our language on purpose for internal processing.
It’s just a quicky but a goodie, hope you enjoy! And if you like what you hear do not forget about our amazing Essential Self-Care Weekend on the 26-28 February all online and in the comfort of your own home or hotel room! Link below!

SLP 145: Flying Into The Unknown with Wesley Dean
Tuesday Jan 18, 2022
Tuesday Jan 18, 2022
“Music has always fascinated me more than any other thing. The way I write is from very personal experiences, very real experiences, probably too honest, to be honest, in lots of ways. And I’ve just finished the record here where it’s very honest. It’s all about us moving from Australia to America and the process of it all. The challenges, the great challenges of moving in a global pandemic and the world and what it is now compared to two years ago with an 8-year-old and a 2-year-old and all the uncertainty, flying into the absolute unknown and really starting all over again.” Wesley Dean
Wesley Dean, aka Wes Carr, grew up in the Sydney entertainment scene playing music from 12 years of age then signing a musical publishing deal at just 19 years of age. Incredibly talented he went on to win Australian Idol in 2008 and even though it was a huge opportunity he actually struggled winning the title as he felt he had pawned over a big part of himself. Idol was actually a crossroads moment where he felt he had to let go of his creative side and move more into the performing world.
It was a massive challenge being a TV personality too, but looking back he sees the blessings in it all and admits even though he does not particularly like the accolade of winning Australian Idol he is more than appreciative of the experience.
Everything that happened to Wes as he grew up he also sees as a huge blessing and realises now just how much music was his medicine. ‘One minute you are called the next Neil Young, the next big thing… and then when it doesn’t happen it can do strange things to you’, says Wessie. As a performer he became a people pleaser and felt he had to get the back row up otherwise in his opinion he had not done his job.
A lot of Wes’s childhood was centred around music. It became his escapism as he lived through his parent’s divorce and other personal struggles. Sometimes he says he has very vivid memories of his childhood and other times it feels very vague, but through it all music was his saviour.
Singing in public since he was 8 years old he knew how to work a crowd but then started to really internalise things. Performing is your extrovert side says Wessie, and song writing is about your introvert side. He had no idea which way he wanted to go but it fused into both with more songs and more creativity.
His idol was Michael Jackson and being the best in the business he learned to put immense pressure on himself which at times served him but of course other times it did not.
Today he is ever so grateful to be writing music and allowing his creative energy to flourish once again.
We delve into the topic of pain and joy how many hits have come from this growth and both sides. Wes believes the secret to music is the pain and joy all in one. Adele has a sense of joy when she sings but she is singing about a painful thing but you still get a release from what she sings about because she has a sense of joy in what she is doing.
‘What A Wonderful World’ is a classic example of this and could easily be sung at a wedding and a funeral. You cannot describe the unspoken magic of music like this. People’s reactions is what makes music so special knowing we all have our own experience of a song.
Music has fascinated Wes all his life and his families move to Nashville has been a chance for him to continue his love for it regardless of the timing with this pandemic.
We discuss how music and smell and how they are two incredible tools to put you in a time and place. We also talk about how much as an artist Wes has grown through many years of experiences and moments honouring his music from the past and realising how hard he has worked and how much he has grown over the years. He believes all good things come to those who wait.
Wes shares with us how each of his albums meant different things at different times. His music has no expectations and that means it can have a life of its own. He does it from a pure sense of joy rather than the pressure of streaming and following. He tries to always operate from that space creating from a pure sense. He feels he is writing for legacy, music is his diary entry for the day.
Wes suffered with depression and anxiety in his early twenty’s and explains there was one particular tipping point where he needed to get off an international flight where it felt like his spirit was going one way and his body was going the other. It was a panic attack to remember. He spent 3 months at home to ground and balance himself.
Thanks to the help, love and support of his wife Char he needed to retract and work out what he wanted to do. He learned TM transcendental meditation which he believed literally changed his brain overnight. His teacher helped him to grow through this time in his life.
When he was young, he was drawn to watching The Beatles Anthology on television and was intrigued with how they wanted to know more about the meaning of life. John Lennon thought the Maharishi would slip him the answer and give him the key! George Harrison was the one who lead them there thanks to their interest in the Indian culture, spirituality and the meditation plus the musicianship and influence of Ravi Shankar. Wes shares how he wanted to travel to India in his footsteps.
Watching the Beatles filmed in India Wes was drawn to the spirit of the place and remembered through his TM studies that he wanted to do a George Harrison show honouring his music and spirituality. He retraced his steps in India learning so much about the culture and people. It was an incredible time, he was blown away being at the exact same Ashram where the Beatles themselves had once stood.
He faced a lot of challenges whilst there including OCD and panic attacks, so this pilgrimage was as much about his own self development and understanding as it was following George Harrison. There is not a day that goes by that he does not think about the learnings and teachings. It has helped with his fear hugely and he felt it really was an incredible time. Those 4 guys from Liverpool changed the world in more ways than just music.
We talk about Wes’s journey with his amazing wife Charlotte Gregg. He feels he would never be able to do anything without her. He was not on the right trajectory when he met her so is very grateful to this day that she came into his life. Charlotte was a well renowned actress in her own right and both were very career orientated when they met. But as Wessie says… there is something within that you just know when you find the right one.
Their first-born Willow changed their lives in more ways than just becoming parents. The Sydney couple whose life was on red carpets and living a not-so-normal life had its own challenges but with each experience they personally got stronger and stronger. Both Wes and Char wear their hearts on their sleeves. He says they are a very good team. Feeling like they were on a treadmill to keep the dream alive they made the big move to the Sunshine Coast in 2015. He says as a couple they just fit together 110%.
Moving to Nashville a year ago was a huge curve ball and could probably be seen as the most stressful thing they have done in their married life. They know they are far away from everything they have ever known and add to that the fact they did it all in the middle of a global pandemic. It was a chance to start all over again in one of the hardest industries on earth, the music industry! Wes feels so blessed to have Char as a wife and feels she is a super-human making this decision one hell of an adventure.
How Wessie picks himself up when he is feeling challenged includes writing music and practicing meditation. He knows meditation is a tricky beast sometimes and for him it allows him to see outside of himself and see his problems in a compartmentalised way. He also knows it is not just meditation to make things happen. You have to take action.
He also finds self-discipline with exercise including good HIIT workouts. He appreciates structure and boundaries around the creative side of his personality.
His definition of Self Love is understanding the struggle with self-belief and even though he knows he is on this crazy path self-doubt comes up a lot and believing in his own thing is huge for Wessie. For Wes his ultimate goal is to believe in something. He shares how he sees himself really old having composed a piece of music and it is the Premier night and he is sitting there looking back on his life at all the music he has created and played knowing it has made a difference in the world. He feels creating a piece of music that could live on for many would be his definition of making it.
He has huge dreams and visions and every year as he gets older he puts more pressure on himself, however just recently working in Nashville with a friend who helped him produce his latest album due out on 22nd April, he feels like he is at home. His soul is finally saying yes we are on the right path. A lot of the expectation has quietened down somewhat but he admits he has insanely big dreams.
And he says he would rather dream than not.
Wessie shares the differences in attitude between the USA and Australia. He says in the USA anything is possible. Their attitude is let’s do it, let’s give it a go and try it.
He shares all about his new album that is more like a real theatre show, a story and narrative that flows throughout basically tracing his life and includes a letter to his boys in the future.
His final message would be that he thought he was done with music in 2017, he had resigned to the fact that it was it for him. There were no opportunities arising, he was pigeon-holed and couldn’t get out, there was no creative inspiration, the fire was going out.
It was the start of 2019 and Char and the kids went to see her family in Coffs Harbour and gave himself 10 days to see if he could find that creative spark. He had no plan and no real reason for writing music for 10 days. He knew he had to do it, there was no choice from his perspective. Those 10 days were defining and had all these songs that got him to Nashville. He says to us all to listen to that inner voice.
His favourite quote is from Niccolo Machiavelli:
‘A sign of intelligence is an awareness of one’s own ignorance.’
You are just a tiny blip on the map, you are actually not that important… and this helps to keep your ego in check. When you think this way, it helps to create more music and for him to tell his own story. In his music world he is not that important (and that is not an insult) it is to help keep it all in check and to create a service and be a reflection for the listener. In telling his story it helps to tell other people’s stories.
About Wes:
Singer-songwriter and Australian Idol winner Wesley Dean recently made the move to Nashville where his creativity and inspiration has never felt more alive. Feeling called to music from a young age, his passion prompted Dean to move to Sydney as a teen in pursuit of his musical journey. After years of honing in on his song-writing craft and playing gig after gig, Dean decided to make a change. Following his Australian Idol victory, he quickly signed a record deal, released a hit debut album with Gold and Platinum singles. Now, Dean is entering the next chapter of his career with a revitalized perspective on the music industry, clear vision of the stories he wants to tell and is looking forward to releasing his most honest and personal music to date.

SLP 144: Self Love Quicky – Vetiver Essential Oil
Thursday Jan 13, 2022
Thursday Jan 13, 2022
If there is one way to describe the exquisite virtues of Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides) it would be a very grounding oil. Extracted from the root it has a very deep, smoky and earthy aroma much like Sandalwood and Patchouli. Not everyone is drawn to Vetiver at first but as it grows on you some describe it as the scent of Mother Earth.
Vetiver is a base note often used in earthy and oriental perfumes as the fixative. It blends beautifully with many oils in particular frankincense, geranium, jasmine, lemon, lavender, orange, rose and ylang ylang. It is used in skincare cosmetics and body moisturisers, room fresheners, soaps, oils and as a flavoring agent in beverages, sorbets and food stuffs.
Throughout history the roots, when dried, have been interwoven with floor matting and window coverings to give a warm fragrance and to deter insects. It is also used to thatch rooves of earthen houses and mattresses.
It is considered an emblem of vitality and has aphrodisiac qualities. Considering most sexual problems are more about the psychology of the brain than the physiology this oil has been found to help with a loss of libido and impotence. Using it in a vaporizer or diffuser with oils of ylang ylang, patchouli and orange could well bring a whole lot more fun and adventure to the bedroom!
Vetiver is considered a classic oil for exhaustion whether it is caused by physical, mental or emotional burnout. It can help soothe feelings of anger, irritability and hysteria. Due to its grounding and centering qualities it can be used with lavender, neroli and frankincense to help reduce levels of stress and tension.
It is a wonderful oil to help treat PMS or any sense of lack of purpose or not being good enough. And is known to be especially helpful during menopause due to its balancing effect on hormone secretion. Vetiver is antiseptic, an immune-stimulant, antispasmodic and is anti-parasitic. It may also help with muscular aches and pains, arthritis and rheumatism especially when blended with oils like eucalyptus, geranium and lavender.
In skincare Vetiver is considered deeply nourishing and regenerating. It is excellent to add a drop to your moisturizer for dry, dehydrated or flaky skin and wonderful to help prevent premature aging and cracked heels. Its cicatrisant properties make it excellent for treating stretch marks and toning the skin.
Vetiver is known as the oil of abundance. If you are trying to sell a home use it in a diffuser or a vaporizer with a citrus and floral oil for a positive result. If you are looking for more love, wealth and better health then make sure a daily drop of Vetiver is a part of your daily rituals!

SLP 143: Understanding The Power Of The Mind with Michael Maidens
Tuesday Jan 11, 2022
Tuesday Jan 11, 2022
‘I just always had this fascination with managing my mind. My mind feels like it is this thing that wants to race off in all these directions and I have to try to kind of control it. And understand it, to be able to control it.’
Michael Maidens is just like anyone else and admits he is blundering his way through life doing the best he can. Completing a computer science degree he remained fascinated in human psychology. He walked through life with an experience of gratitude and loved seeing how he could help people to get the most out of their life. An amazing tennis player and mind expert he has learned how much the mind can race off in all directions. The power lies in controlling it and then in understanding it, to do so.
This remarkable soul actually remembers his birth and even leaving his body as he died or felt he died in birth. He thinks this is his realisation of understanding the dimension of time and cannot always explain how things happen and as a consequence likes to take a very inquisitive approach to life.
Michael understands how our experiences can determine who we are. He believes our experiences also grow us as a soul, and we are all part of a much bigger more amazing phenomenal experience with the opportunity to grow and develop each and every day. We can take these lessons beyond the wonder of the stars, we are all fractals, cells within a system whether we go bigger or smaller.
Michael reminds us to remember that what we feel is actually true and real and that it is important to acknowledge that with permission removing their thinking head and into the heart. Our mind wraps logic around the way we understand things but what we feel is actually the truth and the more we act on that feeling the more true life is.
Big resistances occur when we get into a state of fear and anxiety. The lens turns away from our mission and we become very I, I, I. This makes the world feel very small as we internalise too much. The first thing to do is to get outside and just look at the stars. Stare at a tree and get curious as to how it is forming. Sit there in that fascination when stressed. This takes the emphasis away from ourselves as we try and become fascinated with the world around us instead.
When it comes to story and drama sometimes Michael feels a little uncomfortable-ness actually helps us to make progress. Our world is so cushy that sometimes we have to manufacture this uncomfortableness.
Michael shares how he was a very good tennis player and how it became a direct metaphor to his life. He did a lot of his personal growth playing tennis. In this game he says there is nowhere to hide. How you show up as a partner and player is how you can show up in life. The results are based on just you. It can be a lonely place however, a place where there are disappointments, anger and frustration.
What he learned is the longer he held onto his frustration, mistakes and anger the more points it would cost him. The momentum of the match can swing back the other way too the moment you change that state.
He talks about the fine line between arousal and anxiety with two philosophies. He talks about sports psychology and peak performance and optimal state. You need an element of challenge to be engaged. He talks a lot about fear which he believes is the gap around what you believe you can do and what needs to be done.
You are actually more capable than you give yourself credit for and he calls this your attention fear. It is a filter than brings you into a space to perform.
Michael says we must remember we are also unique. There is only one of you. No matter how many ideas or books or roles or saying the same information there is actually only one YOU! If we think in an abundant way there is enough people who will resonate with the way you say it and want from you.
Whatever trauma or experiences you have been through Michael is all about asking how you can show up and help other humans to navigate their way through their challenges and experiences.
When you ever find yourself asking who am I? How can I help? That is just you being human, an empathetic soul. It shows humbleness and beauty and connection. Michael shares a story he told his daughter Ebony in the context of her feeling like she didn’t know the answer to something and not sure to have a go.
It is human nature to be more likely to help the person who always tries, the person who is having a go. This is what Michael sees in business. Just start. Try your hardest to give it your best. Something in motion has energy.
Michael gives an incredible description of ‘The Hero’s Journey’ by Joseph Campbell which is a philosophy with visuals that many of us go through. All characters in a movie follow this journey. There is the hero, the sidekick, a mentor, the temptress… and the challenge is the call to adventure. The adventure is not necessarily a fun journey but it could be about looking at a problem in a different way. When you accept the call you leave the ordinary world. He explains the Dark Knight of the Soul in hitting rock bottom. In his movie he created, The Abundance Code, one of the contributors says it is actually the Dark Knight Of The Ego. It is the ego that is holding onto something. How is the ego holding you in this soul and keeping you somewhat trapped?
We all go on our own Hero’s Journey and we can even have several running at the same time. We slay dragons, take the elixir and in fully surrendering we can find the treasures to come out the other side a bigger, better version of ourselves… ready for the next adventure.
His definition of Self Love is interesting in analysing the separation of self and love. Self-love is to fully own who you are. It is about being YOU and when you do you attract other good souls. There is graciousness in owning who you are. True self-love is frequency and when you tap into that you are floating. It is the graciousness and happiness to also be wrong.
Michael challenges us to ask often ‘what would love do?’ especially through this pandemic. There is a lot more growth to happen in his humble opinion. As humans we are being really forced to look at and not turn a blind eye to the things that have been happening not just in the past few years but for a long time. You cannot not see this now. He believes there is a lot going on and that we are not through it just yet. He has taken the approach to be accepting that things will not go on forever but is also not in a big hurry. The world is very much in flux at the moment. He is happy to keep things simple for now and is ok at reminding us all to be present.
He recommends going through this pandemic and life itself with enquiry. And looking at the beauty of discovery and what it is trying to tell us.
He recommends the best way to protect yourself right now is to see this as life. You can apply this to many things. Action is in two different modes of operation. Either running away or running towards something. When we run away we act in a certain way. If you run towards something you will act differently and the thing you may have been running away from will disappear. Start running efficiently!
Michael recommends embalming yourself in 3 projects a week:
Exercise project
Art project
Knowledge acquisition project
Don’t be in such a hurry to have something short term in much the same way as going down a one way street… do it with care.
People holding onto the past so much thinking things will go back to how they were. But if people can just start to double check your thinking. Wanting things back to how they were is not going to happen. So, we need to allow ourselves to grieve and appreciate the benefits in this. In this process you can surrender with power. Surrender the old story. Let go of the old version of ego and what life was. At some point vulnerability what now is to be true?
Fear makes people do strange things. How you show up as a human is the one thing you can control. How you BE human. Own yourself (self-love) is standing in your strength. Use deep thought and not careless narrative to be that. Even through this pandemic there are some incredible humans finding each other and there is the opportunity to build new.
In Michael’s work he helps people to create an irresistible offer, how you see life and what got you to here. He gets you to look at who are the people you have helped in the past? What do people ask you at the friendly BBQ and what is it you LOVE to do? He teaches people how to wrap this up and LOVE their offer and their positioning. SLP 141: The Process of Trust with Tim Leeming
Tuesday Jan 04, 2022
Tuesday Jan 04, 2022
‘That was a hell of whirlwind of coming back to that concept of trust and trying to make sense of things when you are right at the coal face and exhausted and sleep deprived and carrying the emotions of everyone around you who love you and care about you. So that was a real process of trust just trusting that this was what was meant to happen for us, and for Sage, but also leaning in on practicing exactly what we preach.’
Tim Leeming is a new father, husband, brother, son, good mate, nutritionist and chiropractor. Tim lives by a mantra that although we cannot all live in nature, we can live more naturally. He loves working with people, helping them to align their habits and lifestyles with the laws of nature, to detoxify and simplify life, health and wellbeing. Most importantly, Tim strives to lead by example with his teachings, his own way of living, and lately has learned how to believe in the process of trust.
TJ Leeming grew up in the south of the South Island of NZ in Invercargill. With a huge involvement in an outdoor life and participating in all sports he spent a lot of time eventually involved in Rowing. It began to take up most of his time alongside rugby union and throughout these competitive years TJ developed a love of the human body and how it worked at its best for optimum performance.
He got into doing an exercise science degree and happened to be at a careers conference where he heard Dr Phil McMaster speaking on chiroproactic which TJ explains means Chiros – a Greek latin word for hand and Practic – to do. He was so encapsulated he left Otago University to study Chiropractic in Auckland. One year later he decided to have some time out and then returned to finish his exercise science degree.
His best mate Callum was traveling to Perth and invited him to come for the Summer. On a whim he moved and started getting adjusted by him. He saw how passionate and happy and sought after he was. It was a sign to go back to chiropractic and complete this degree. After a fun gap year where he travelled through Europe, he eventually returned to NZ to pick up and complete his chiro studies. He had 3 more years to go of that and it was during this time he properly connected with Casie O’Meara who was also completing her chiropractor degree.
Once they completed their degrees Casie and TJ moved to Adelaide working together and eventually as was always planned they moved back to the Sunshine Coast to settle.
TJ opens up about how much personal growth he has done over the past ten years. He has followed the Vedic philosophy and realises that all transformations may not occur in each lifetime. The path to enlightenment is when your soul keeps coming back until it figures it all out, embodying each journey.
A strength of TJ is asking for help or latching onto people smarter and wiser than he is always wanting to learn. He feels incredibly blessed to have met some extraordinary souls and to be a part of the O’Meara clan. He believes some of it is luck and explains his thoughts around nature vs nurture and the neurological imprinting in the first 3, 5 and 7 years.
TJ also considers the essence of growing up in NZ and Australia and the energy of a culture from both countries.
The concept of trust to TJ is having a bigger concept of what you think is God, Source, Universe, Divine… and a trust in the greater intelligence makes it so much easier to let go and surrender control. As a young man marrying, starting a family and beginning a new business he has had to trust that concept and believe in the greater good.
We then have a huge conversation about TJ’s beautiful daughter and her dramatic birth in May 2021. TJ shares very openly Sage Grace’s journey and how his own personal growth was catalysed and accelerated thanks to her birth.
Casie and TJ had planned a homebirth. And this little poppet arrived very quickly only to discover when she was born she was flaccid and had no tone… they administered CPR, had the ambulance arrive and were hospitalised. They were told she had brain damage and needed to transfer to Brisbane to be ‘put on ice’ laid on colling mats to 32.2 degrees to slow any damage to her brain. It was a hell of a whirlwind and really tested TJ’s belief in TRUST.
Leaning in on the power of chiropractic care, love, affirmation, sound, essential oils, aromatherapy, divine intervention and in particular Dr Simon Floreani who is an incredible man spending a lot of time on the phone guiding and supporting this precious family. One suggestion he had was to get his hands on some pure Damask Rose Oil as it is a potent nervous system stimulant. And it just so happened that I was in Brisbane with some pure Rose Oil on me! This beautiful couple videoed wee Sage’s reaction to the oil placed on the base of her neck. It is quite simply a miracle.
It was at 16 days Casie and TJ drew a line in the sand and insisted they were to take her home. Apart from breastfeeding this little poppet was doing everything she was meant to going from strength to strength. This incredible couple continued with an arduous, tumultuous, and exhausting journey to lead this little baby to be able to breastfeed. They used light therapy, chiropractic care, sound healing, affirmations, oils… everything.
TJ talks about the male approach of wanting to DO, to fix the problem and it was so hard for him to literally do nothing but BE there for them both. It was a huge steep learning curve. It was at week 13 Sage gave Casie the best birthday gift of all when she latched on and started breastfeeding. And today this incredible little girl is strong and healthy and thriving.
We talk a lot about the vitalistic approach to healthcare as opposed to the mechanistic approach and how both philosophies sit in the world in particular for acute medicine there is no better place to be but in Western medical care. Beyond an emergency there are far better places to be. In fact, statistically it might be dangerous to stay in that model of care beyond an emergency.
The strength for them both came from leaning in on their mentors and support and an overriding method of trust. Ones’ to bend the rules they were constantly asking questions to understand the logic of the hospital care. TJ questions what particular model’s are right or wrong. They navigated Sage’s care with logic and feeling into it and TJ honours the support of Simon, Dr Mark Postles, Dr Sarah Farrant and family.
TJ believes love is completely foundational. You cannot truly heal without a foundation of love. TJ believes Sage chose them as parents and have always loved the name Sage. As a lover of words and finding meaning in words TJ explains that the name ‘Sage’ is all knowing, all wise, omnipotent, healing and cleansing. And how amazing it is that she has fulfilled her namesake.
TJ believes the definition of self-love is largely around acceptance. Especially as a male to accept love, compliments, praise, thanks, challenge and accept love into your life from others and then also being able to accept the responsibility and accountability that comes with the work required to unpack the subconscious imprinting in the first 7 years. To elevate through those levels of consciousness and to have a higher human experience you have to have a willingness to unpack yourself and your world view. It is accepting the responsibility of that as well as accepting love from others. And then we can begin to love ourselves which is just a journey home.
We talk about guiding TJ’s generation through these uncertain times and his advice would be to start at home and with self. Self-love, self-acceptance is showing up in the best possible way as it has to come from the ground up. It’s like that line. ‘It’s just one straw… said 7 billion people!’ It can ripple out if just 7 billion people could make that shift.
If there is an opposing force to love and we call it fear TJ advises that we take a step back. He says if in doubt, zoom out. Challenge or a negative comment is not necessarily an invitation to engage. Observe more. Listen more. Perhaps not engaging in every little thing, could mean that things might look a little different.
How to mitigate and overcome fear there are plenty of little tools we can use. Maybe not using technology for the first hour of your day. Starting the day with gratitude. You cannot live in fear with an attitude of gratitude. Get detailed on it. Do breathwork to help clear the noise, it strips us back to our essence and you see fear dissipate. Meditation helps too. TJ recommends going through your contacts list and pick one person a day to randomly complement someone or let them know you love them. Tell them something you love about them, just connect with them for no other reason but to share love.
Your default mode is to be fully healthy, vibrant and well. If you are anything but this, you have simply drifted from your default. Do things you are most likely to keep doing. Compliance is a massive element. If you are more likely to keep doing it, it will work! Start small, do achievable things. And sometimes you need help and assistance to do that which is completely ok too.
There is an unhealthy extreme of compliance and discipline but there is a need especially in the world we live in with distraction, instant gratification and desire. But it is easier than people think.
TJ has a beautiful message to the people he appreciates and loves… He says he is not done with any of them yet. He wants to continue to learn, to make mistakes and fail and will be that frustration in their life. He also promises to give a valuable return and exchange! The list is hugely long.
TJ’s 2022 message to you is to step back, breathe, observe, lean into challenges but not without observing first. Trust that you have got this far and things will be ok. It is a time for resolutions or the fact the date changes doesn’t mean to be hard on yourself. Tomorrow is a new day or better still this afternoon is a new afternoon. Not too big expectations so you are likely to stick to. Move forward slowly with intention.
His favourite quotes are:
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” “Kind” said the boy.
Charlie Mackesy
“What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever said?” asked the boy. “Help”, said the horse.
Charlie Mackesy
“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”
TS Eliot
‘We’re all just walking each other home.’

SLP 140: Self Love Quicky – New Year New You

Download our End Of Year Reflections Chart here
Happy New Year to you! As we farewell 2021 here is a chance to take heed and reflect on the year that was and set your intentions for a year that will be in 2022. And in this podcast I have included a couple of ways to do this.
I personally want to thankyou for being on the Self-Love Podcast journey. It has been a hugely inspirational year and I am so grateful to have brought to you our amazing guests and quickies each week.
What the New Year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the New Year. It is neither an end nor a beginning, but a going on. You are never too old to reinvent yourself.
Make this the year you say I WILL be stronger, braver, kinder and unstoppable. Do not wait until the conditions are perfect to begin. Beginning makes the conditions perfect.
I am also attaching the Reflections Chart for you to take some time and ponder over some very important questions that could help you to see how much you achieved and what goals you would love to set yourself for the new year. This is a beautiful thing to do with your partner, your kids and your family. Enjoy the process.
You could also opt to take out a blank piece of A4 paper and fold it in half and half again 5 times. When you open the page back up you will notice you have 32 squares on one side and 32 on the other. Your job is then to fill out all 64 squares with dreams, intentions and goals you would love to achieve in 2022.
It could be small things like do a calligraphy course or attend a weekend cooking school. Or they could be big goals like buy your first home, meet the love of your life or upgrade your car. Be specific and remember no goal is too big. Put everything down on this sheet of paper. Then, this time next year you could pull this out and tick off the ones you achieved and place the ones you didn’t onto next years sheet. We all know goals change so it’s important you allow yourself to be fluid, adapt to what is and surrender to the beautiful process.
And finally, I just want to say THANKYOU from the bottom of my heart. Thank you to my special ,amazing and incredible guests, my precious family and YOU! You, my friend are the reason I do this podcast and you are what makes me feel so grateful to be on this ride.
Happy New Year you beautiful soul. Here’s to remembering all we can learn from this past year and here’s to us all remembering that love will always override fear and it truly is the answer to all your worries and concerns. Self-love is the ultimate gift to yourself. It is what makes you whole. And it is your ultimate responsibility. Wishing you peace, love and laughter in the New Year.
Big hugs and lots of love
Kim xx

SLP 139: An Opportunity To Return To Centre with Jordan Potts
Tuesday Dec 28, 2021
Tuesday Dec 28, 2021
‘There will be a level of self-doubt that’s created in all human beings, that’s the mind. And I think along the journey, the Universe gives us opportunities to wake up and opportunities to return to centre and to really realise what’s within us. And if you’re truly to sit in peace, in silence, and think about what you could do, or who you could be, if you didn’t let all of the shit stop you. If you just let go of all the stories, let go of the opinions of others, if you just did what you truly wanted to do and went after it, you could do it.’ Jordan Potts
Jordan Potts is a remarkable soul who has been through a hell of a lot in his 28 years. High on drugs and waking up in hospital after falling ten metres out of a tree he realised that was the turning point, a second chance. It was the wake-up call of his life and an opportunity to come clean, find himself and return to centre.
In a world full of technology that is advancing in progression like never before, one of Jordan Pott’s greatest values is actually Nature and Connection. And he loves nothing more than connecting with people in person! He believes it is so important to stay as connected as much as possible and took advantage by being in person for our interview today.
He started life as a happy go lucky kid… an ENFP, a super hero! Up until 11 years of age his family felt like it was the perfect picture. Then there was that one night when his dad told him he was leaving and their parents were splitting up. He had no idea how to process the anger, guilt, frustration and shame, but these feelings had a massive impact on his life and how he chose to do things moving forward.
He went into the sport of Rugby League to quite literally break people, only the problem was he was the one that ended up being more broken. He continued to doubt his ability and self. And got to a very lost point where he did not enjoy life at all. At 16 years of age, he was overweight, lost, full of anger and shame.
He found he was drawn to some older friends which lead him to doing many different drugs and drinking all the time. Taking drugs helped him to believe he was a super-hero again full of life, partying and doing all sorts of things that lead him into a dangerous place including 3 or 4 day benders. He got to a point where he was very distracted from himself.
Jordan became dependent using drugs on the weekends to access what he believed was happiness. However, he also realised this was only temporary. He was heavily addicted to drugs and got to a point where he became a burden to many and in very toxic relationships. It skyrocketed out of control.
He woke one day to the beeps of a machine in hospital after climbing 10 metres up a tree high on drugs at a Splendour Festival. He fell badly injuring his back and having an epileptic fit. His dad was right there beside his bed as he woke.
He realised he was in trouble, that he had to rebuild his life and rediscover himself where he could simply love life again without the drugs and toxic relationships. He moved to Melbourne with the intention to do nothing but learn about the body and do it completely sober, no partying, no girls… just reading, learning and listening to podcasts for six months.
He explains how this amazing woman walked into the gym one day but did not want to be that ‘creepy trainer’ stalking on the gorgeous women in the gym. But he knew if he did not ask this woman out, he could miss the most amazing opportunity of his life to connect.
One thing led to another, and that move was his opportunity to form an amazing life-long connection with Nicola that has manifested into an incredible relationship and their first baby Indigo being born just a few months ago.
Jordan believes every single human being is born with a spark beyond the labels, beliefs and conditionings… somewhere along the way it may dim due to the experiences of life, but he says there is that potential in everyone.
As a parent he knows he cannot protect his son from scary experiences and he is well aware that self-doubt will be part of his human experience. We need not be afraid as the Universe gives us opportunities to wake up and opportunities to return to centre.
Around the right people and the right environment, you do not need a near death experience or a massive Universal call. You can truly nurture your potential and wake up to it with love.
You should put yourself first and your environment should be second largest dictator of your potential. Put yourself in environments that will really nurture and harness what is within you.
Our greatest experiences and ability to wake up is within us all and Jordan explains how he feels now as a dad wanting to protect his son and any future children he has. He says this allows each of us the ability to surrender to the ultimate life experience. What is important is creating the most safest environment he can. It is all about perspective too. As soon as we change the way we look at things the way we see things change. It’s about encouraging and embodying for himself the experiences of life. He accepts pain is inevitable. So long as he can teach his son to love himself that’s what truly matters.
Jordan says he wants to embody his beliefs. A smart person doesn’t tell you they are smart. A tough person doesn’t tell you they’re tough. A rich person doesn’t tell you they’re rich. There is no reason to tell. Just embody it.
Jordan wants to embody the things he hopes his son will experience. He also appreciates his experience of fatherhood is about allowing his own emotional experiences to unfold naturally too.
If his son is in a safe container to express his emotions and thoughts, then that would be Jordan’s greatest wish.
There is so much self-love lacking in many in this world. Confidence is an incredible skill and ability for the human experience. Confidence and Cockiness – is a very fine line but a distinct line. Confidence is when you love and believe in yourself but not at the expense of others. Cockiness is being better than because… it is about pulling others down to feel better. It is a survival state.
His definition of Self Love is almost a reminder to come back to yourself and to accept everything you have been blessed with. Your flaws your triggers your insecurities, everything that is wrong with you that makes you human as soon as you accept that, you become more full of love. We live in a society to give our love to everyone else and to help others, that’s not a lack, but it changes when you give that back to yourself. What I am not and accepting who I am. And when you release those shackles, you will find you can love others more.
When you are judging others that is an insecurity within self. Or they may be doing something outside of your values. Or you may just not vibe their vibe. Loving people you don’t think you can love is where the growth lies.
Knowing when to express parts of yourself can be key to minding yourself. Finding your true self is unpacking and expressing yourself in a safe space. Surrounding yourself with amazing people, mentors and the right culture of people who help you to see things differently. Seeing life with a different lens allows you to see a different world.
We talk a lot around the power of understanding your values and the importance of being clear on them which allows you to step into the right environment and embodying them. If you are struggling, you need to give yourself time and safe space to find your way through.
Set amazing goals, visualise what you want and then seek after people who have embodied it and go after their values beliefs and actions.
Jordan explains how they set up his amazing gym Exalto and the important values and ethos he has created to attract the right people. He wanted the gym to be a fertile place, a place for self-love and an integration of mind, body and lifestyle. If the fitness industry is all about health Jordan questions why they do not approach a more holistic approach and build all areas of a good life into the whole program.
Jordan believes it is important to look at moving towards more of what you want rather than running away from what you don’t want. Get into a place of peace and presence and then ask what you truly value.
There are so many beautiful questions in this podcast and the way Jordan answers them will give you huge and incredible insight. His experiences and level of maturity will blow you away.
He shares when he slips off the path, how important it is important to let go of what should be, but notice what is actually happening in a space of awareness. Notice how you feel, what is happening, and why? Addressing how you are behaving from a place of how you are feeling rather than judgement can be so much more helpful.
Jordan shares even being healthy can be an addiction, and noticing the expectations we place on ourselves when we have healthy rituals can be a limitation. If it ever causes a negative result through resentment, then that may need your attention and awareness.
His advice to our listener is if you are worried about someone you care about just share openly. For men to see other men come from a place of drugs, alcohol, sex, abuse, fights and all that shit, that is so fear and survival driven to then step into a place of being calm, loving and strong… powerful not forceful. It is not about telling men what they need to do, it is just giving people permission to access more love.
Love is not a common topic in an intimate way for many men, often it can be seen as queer or gay in a negative way. But it is encompassing all that can be, to let the guard down and be the beautiful example of strength, power, presence, protection and nurturing. Get back to being grateful men, men of service and enjoying their own internal world.
A beautiful podcast with a remarkable human.
His favourite quote is from: Dr Darren Manser
Love everyone and everything, including yourself!
