SLP 161: Being A Better Example For Our Children with Tanya Jones Naturopath
Tuesday Mar 15, 2022
Tuesday Mar 15, 2022
“When our first little girl was four months old, I decided I wanted something new, and I wanted to know how we could live better lives, but also I wanted to be a better example for them. I sort of made a pact with myself that I did not want them to grow up to feel the pain and illness I had experienced. So, I wanted to do everything possible to help them understand their bodies and grow up healthy and respecting their bodies and looking after themselves.” Tanya Jones
This beautiful soul shares an amazing health story of growing up as a typical country kid in Victoria. She ate a typical standard Australian diet, having things like Nutrigrain for breakfast, hundreds and thousands on white bread and many other everyday so-called typical foods. She seemed to be a pretty healthy individual regardless of the many whispers that were not accounted for. Eventually the stomach pains she experienced hit her so hard that at 18 she was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease.
As a dancer she burnt off the sugar and calories she ate and kept pushing hard through the pain. It was a roller coaster of a ride as she was physically exhausted and clearly had major blood sugar issues. Sadly, she endured seven surgeries after discovering an abscess the size of a golf ball on her bowel and faded away to just 44kgs. She hit rock bottom.
She tried to rebuild her strength and as a young 20 year old was endeavouring to live a normal life that did include a few more surgeries. However, unknowingly she continued to eat all the wrong foods. It was over ten years ago whilst living in Sydney and about to get married she decided to see new doctors and specialists to try to get an understanding of what was wrong with her. They decided the best option was to come off her medications and chop a lot of her damaged bowel out so she could start a family.
After giving birth to her first daughter she was determined for her baby and any future children that they did not have to endure what she had. She decided she needed to learn all she could and even though it took over 6 years to get through her Degree she is now a qualified Naturopath. And even though it felt like a huge hill to climb she is so happy helping people especially in the area of gut health when they may feel like she used to where all hope was lost.
What completely dumbfounded her throughout her journey was that every one of the five gastroenterologists she saw over the years told her that what she ate did not have anything to do with her issues. She knew at a deep intrinsic level though that it did have a lot to do with her issues. And she learned by going down the natural path that her microbiome was badly damaged.
Tanya says it is important to remember there are good and bad practitioners and to keep looking until you find the right one. She finally found someone who spoke into her needs and showed her the power of faecal transplants and how to focus on other things besides drugs and medications.
The key she learned is that nutrition is so important, vital even. We think of food as calories just to fill a space in our stomach and fill a void. We don’t think of the power of food and how it sends messengers to every cell in our body to tell it how to function and work.
Tanya believes it is a bit of the gut driving the brain and the brain driving the gut. It is equal communication and a communication that is underestimated by a lot of people.
Tanya’s philosophy around food is simple. If it is grown on a farm or comes off a tree or is an animal, then that is a real food source. Look at the evolutionary pathway of food. If it comes from a packet then it may not be the best, especially if you do not understand the ingredients, let alone know if they are real.
The way Tanya works with all the nutrients and teaching people to get back to real food is just one step at a time. She is now using a wonderful system called the Precision Health Plan which is very specific to the individual. She dives into genetics, health type and how to understand how different foods affect us bio-dynamically. There are many ways for all of us as individuals to get onto the right pathway according to our needs. A good practitioner is trying to piece together all the bits of the puzzle always looking for the root cause.
Tanya says we have a lot of power and control with our genetics. People may use the excuse that a certain condition runs in the family. But whilst we may have the genetic tendencies it is our lifestyle and environment that determines if those genes are switched on or off. It is remarkable how little attention is given to the lifestyle side of things.
We get to hear the different approaches Tanya uses to help her clients. She knows there is no one golden pill for everyone and that we all react differently. We have to remember that there are also the non-responders to different medications or diets. Tanya wanted something to help the non-responders honouring the individual bio-chemistry of each client and the Precision Health Plan answered that for her.
Tanya believes there is a place for both wholistic and orthodox medicine. Medicine can let us down in the way it goes after one little thing or pathogen or chemical as opposed to a wholistic approach honouring our whole self and our individuality. Nothing works in isolation. She believes it is powerful to use new breakthroughs in science and combine them with the traditional approaches. The key is adaptability.
Tanya shares her family life and how distractions can cause limitations throughout the craziness of this world. She has worked intently around limiting those distractions for herself and her family. She suggests shutting out and turning off the news and be mindful of how much time is spent on social media.
Her definition of Self Love is definitely cutting distractions but at present it is the realisation that it is constantly evolving for everybody. It is about accepting where you are in your self-love journey. It is the acknowledgement that everyone is doing the best they can with what they have right now. It is honouring those micro-moments of mindfulness. It is saying thankyou to yourself. Meet yourself where you are and be kind to yourself.
With regards to the way the world is right now and being a mum she says it is honouring what they hear from friends, teachers or others but telling them it is not necessarily what they think at home. She likes to empower them with the information she has. And to come back to them honouring their own mind and body.
She has a big love of essential oils, candles and rituals and loves how much her two girls know to ask for support with certain oils. She uses her oils every day and appreciates how much they can set the tone each day for everyone.
Her final message to the Self Love Podcast listener is to honour where you are at right here, right now. And to acknowledge you are in the right place by listening to this right now. We are in a world where the people around you may not have been exposed to self-love, health and wellness which can make you feel slightly isolated. If you don’t have those best supporters right next to you then head to podcasts.
Connection is a big part of what is important to Tanya so having that in communities like podcasts meant the world to her. Also having a coach in her corner has been like having someone to look up to and to believe in the power of her. Being around people you adore and admire can keep you motivated and focused away from all the distractions around us.
Her two favourite quotes are:
‘This too shall pass.’
‘To get through the hardest journey we only need to take one step at a time, but we must keep on stepping.’

SLP 160: Self Love Quicky – Dealing With Our Grief Of Losing A Celebrity
Thursday Mar 10, 2022
Thursday Mar 10, 2022
Do you remember where you were when Lady Diana died? Michael Jackson, Steve Irwin, even Elvis Presley? What about horrible events like 9/11 or the Boxing Day Tsunami? And did you find as the news landed it hit you harder than you expected? Let’s be honest, even if someone like any of these people’s death hasn’t impacted you, you can probably think of another celebrity death that hit you harder than you imagined and this week we take look at how we can deal with the loss of a celebrity.
I remember where I was for all of these events mentioned above and I was also aware of how I felt a little self-conscious finding myself experiencing such harsh grief feelings around the death of a stranger. You too, may find the feelings creep up on you or you ask yourself, why am I so upset about this, I didn’t even know this person?! The sadness doesn’t just feel abstract, it can feel personal. And I guess that’s why it feels kinda weird!
Feeling intense emotions around celebrity deaths is a common experience and, when we are already grieving, it can be even more deeply intensified especially seeing it on the media what feels like 24/7. Like so many things in grief, there are lots of reasons and no clear rules.
And there’s a few things to keep in mind:
We don’t know celebrities, but we know celebrities. They may be a regular part of our lives, with what they do. We have often seen them grow and change and, in some cases we may have felt connected to those changes.
We feel connected to our favorite celebs. And these connections can be because they remind us of us!
They are connected to friends or family who have died. Many generations can be fans of the same person and therefore we feel it even more as a whole.
We connect with the way the celeb died. Sometimes the way a celebrity dies is a big wake up call. Whether it is suicide, illness or a shock it can impact us hugely as there can be a connection in our own lives.
That celeb was always there to comfort us. We loved being able to see them for what they did best and it may have been a comfort knowing we could count on that. It can almost feel like losing someone we knew really well.
We see it everywhere. The media are all over it and we see the death everywhere.
It represents losing our past or our youth. It may be if the celebrity is the same age we feel some kind of shocking connection to our own mortality.
They will never do or create anything new. This is a hard one to appreciate but to think we will never see or hear them again is truly acknowledging the end of an era and that is hard.
In the case of SK Warne it is so sad to imagine his amazing kids, his girls never able to have him walk them down the aisle. His son never able to have another round of poker… what they have all lost is too big and too horrible to imagine and I think that hurts us all the most.

SLP 159: An Ode To Shane Warne with Danny Morrison
Tuesday Mar 08, 2022
Tuesday Mar 08, 2022
‘I think he had a great heart, and that’s the beautiful thing, he had a great heart in terms of the love of the game, and the love particularly of his children. And I just think he gave so much to the game that you often hear, that he was there long after the others, signing autographs because let’s be real that’s what the kids wanted, they wanted Warnie’s autograph more than anyone else’s, and the King would be there for ages. And that comes through in that documentary, so in summing him up I just think he had a massive heart and he gave back, he gave back to his fans.’ Danny Morrison
Shane Keith Warne was an incredible Australian cricketer. A right-arm leg spinner, he was widely considered one of the greatest bowlers in cricket history. He was known for being as much as a larrikin as he was a cricketing legend, but his death has left a huge hole in the cricketing world. This week we speak to my husband, Danny Morrison, who shares his insights into playing alongside this remarkable genius and what this loss has meant to him.
I ask Danny questions like what was he like when he first came onto the scene? How he was perceived when he bowled ‘that ball of the century’ in the first ball of the Ashes in England? How did his attitude to life on and off the park affect his life?
We talk about him being a pin up boy and an A-Lister and how he was front and centre of many a so-called scandal. Shane loved a beer and a pie yet also enjoyed the finer things in life. Danny shares how charismatic Shane was and how much he made everyone who met him feel at ease.
Danny shares what it was like playing against him and how he was one of the wickets Danny took in his best bowling figures of 7 for 89 in Wellington in 1993. Shane had many endearing qualities but none more so than being seen as a down to earth fair dinkum Aussie character loved by many.
Shane also had an incredibly tough attitude and handled many of the attacks on and off the field answering every critic with more wickets. He was single-focused and made no apology for that. It may have cost him his marriage but his number one joy became his three incredible children.
We talk about freaks in sport like Ian Botham and Tiger Woods and Shane Warne was no different. We talk about his mum and dad, his brother Jason and his love of football and Melbourne.
Shane Warne was a celebrity and was always destined for star quality. His life, his contribution to the sport of cricket made a massive difference. Danny believes his life was almost scripted.
His loss came just 24 hours after the incredible Rodney Marsh passed away so to say the cricketing world is hurting is an understatement.
Danny believes it is very fitting to honour him with a state funeral and naming the Great Southern Stand at the mighty MCG the SK Warne Stand. He had a big heart, he was an extraordinary player, coach and media personality. Danny doesn’t believe a knighthood was needed, after all he wore the crown well. He was the King and that suited him well, end of story.
Danny finishes this interview with a wonderful anecdotal story with the great SK Warne.
I felt so sad interviewing my hubby on the loss of this super star. We both felt tender and emotional at times, but I am so proud to share this with you, my amazing Self Love Podcast listener.
RIP Warnie. You will be missed more than you could ever imagine.

SLP 158: Self Love Quicky – Beliefs and Values
Thursday Mar 03, 2022
Thursday Mar 03, 2022
Our beliefs and values drive our behaviours but knowing the difference between them can be a little confusing. People use both to guide all that they do in their actions and behaviour and they both help to form their attitudes towards different things, but essentially, they are different. Let’s take a look at how they differ.
Beliefs are the convictions that we generally hold to be true, usually without actual proof or evidence. Beliefs are assumptions we hold to be true.
They can be connected to religion as an example. Religious beliefs could include a belief that God created the earth in seven days. Other religions have their own set of beliefs.
Beliefs that are not religious could include: that all people are created equal, which would guide us to treat everyone regardless of sex, race, religion, age, education, status etc with equal respect. Conversely someone else might believe that all people are not created equal, which results in racist and sexist values and attitudes.
Our beliefs grow from what we see, hear, experience, read and think about. From these things we develop an opinion that we hold to be true and unmovable at that time. From our beliefs we derive our values, which can either be correct or incorrect when compared with evidence, but nonetheless hold true for us.
Beliefs are basically assumptions that we make about the world, many of which can be taught to us from parents, family, teachers, peers and coaches. Beliefs are contextual: They arise from learned experiences, resulting from the cultural and environmental situations we have faced.
Our values then stem from those beliefs. Our values are things that we deem important and can include concepts like love and connection, equality, freedom, honesty, health and wellness, education, perseverance, loyalty, faithfulness, conservation of the environment and many, many other concepts.
Values are not based on information from the past and they are not contextual. Values are universal. Values transcend contexts because they are based on what is important to us: They arise from the experience of being human.
Values are intimately related to our needs: Whatever we need—whatever is important to us or what is missing from our lives—is what we value. As our life conditions change, and as we mature and grow in our psychological development, our value priorities change. When we use our values to make decisions we focus on what is important to us—what we need to feel a sense of well-being.
It is possible for our beliefs and values to differ over time as we encounter evidence or have experiences that challenge our previously held views.
Conversely, our beliefs and values can also be strengthened or challenged by experience or evidence. For example, you may strengthen a belief that there is a greater spirit at play when you see someone you love recover from a life-threatening illness. But a belief in the greater good of humans could be shaken to the core if you experience something terrible.
We can see that everyone has an internalised system of beliefs and values that they have developed throughout their lives. These may stem from family, upbringing, different groups, peers, environment or religion.
Summary1. Beliefs are concepts that we hold to be true.
2. Beliefs may come from religion, but not always
3. Values are ideas that we hold to be important.
4. Values govern the way we behave, communicate and interact with others
5. Beliefs and values determine our attitudes and opinions.

SLP 157: Adapting In A Different Way with Adam Epskamp
Tuesday Mar 01, 2022
Tuesday Mar 01, 2022
I swap out words like degeneration for adaptation. It’s super important to describe it in a different way that gives your body the power back. When I’ve described that to many people it blows them away because as an example; degeneration makes everyone feel like they are falling apart and disintegrating. That’s not a great feeling to have when you are walking out of the office and think I’m degenerating, I’m falling apart. You’re already glass half empty. Whereas, if I highlight that those changes are occurring in your body because of innate intelligence then it’s like, hang on a minute, my body is adapting to the stress that I have continuously put on it… wow what if I stimulated it different and it could adapt in a different way?
Dr Adam Epskamp is one special, healthy, fit soul. But he wasn’t always like that. At the end of high school, he fell in love with ordering food and alcohol from the car and accordingly by the age of 19 he was weighing in at 115kg. His love of body boarding and a frightening moment in the water made him realise, where he was almost breathless and blue, that he desperately needed to do something about his health. He explains how he adapted and became the happy, healthy, fit version of himself today.
It was time to honour himself, so he met up with two PT’s at Craggie Fitness Centre in Perth, which took him through his first fitness appraisal which was the event, the turning point to step into a life of health and wellness.
He was a mathematical soul studying mechanical engineering which he loved but realised with this life event that he wanted to shift his focus. He looked at becoming a PT, maybe get into kinesiology or exercise physiology and it was his chiropractor who suggested he do chiropractic. He also became a fitness instructor to help him through Uni some 15 years ago.
We talk about what it means to have the courage to ask for help when you know you need it. Adam said his mother was a huge inspiration and the conditioning he needed throughout his life. He said he learned from her, if you really want something you’ll move heaven and earth to go get it.
He speaks about the different versions of chiropractic and he fell in love with Gonstead which is structurally based, uses x-rays, and your hands and instruments to determine which areas are best to work on. With a background in engineering, he realised there was a real link to structure and function of the body.
He has used his understanding of the body and specialised in the chemical management of paediatrics and general metabolism of the body.
Adam explains the fundamentals of chiropractic care. Pain generally brings someone to this modality. Adam’s gift is enabling people to connect the dots from this vitalistic point of view. He reads bodies like a book and gives the person’s history back to them in the process. He wants to support people to get more from life with chiropractic care. Average is a given, but Adam asks how about being extraordinary?
He explains pain and the dysfunction it comes from. Inflammation is probably the center of all of that. He speaks of the triad of health.
Physical where you may have pushed too hard, having soreness is ok but too much can be detrimental. The mental side, our emotions and how that can create issues like the fear of the unknown. And the chemical side which is the foods we eat that are so hard to digest, our environment we live in, products we use on our body.
Adam says our choice in language can again, be detrimental or beneficial. He likes to show people that their body has incredible power.
Language is probably the first thing I do to help start to coach people towards a different paradigm. It is hard to do in one go! But using your hands and what you are seeing and feeling, then educating how the body responds to stress it what gives people their power back.
We talk diet and nutrition and how the body is like a group of builders who are busy building it with the right building blocks. If you are not sure, then make sure you work with a professional to make sure you have the complete picture for what is right for you.
Adam’s go-to Self-Care team is made up of a group of professionals he admires. He gets adjusted every week, so he is physically well. He has a naturopath to make sure he is getting all the right building blocks and not missing anything. He believes if you are not measuring you cannot manage things well. He has massage once a month. He has a physio to go to when challenged. He loves Magnesium floats where sensory deprivation is possible. He loves acupuncture too.
We talk technology and then we talk all around the effects of the pandemic on Adam and his wife. They decided to put their health first and were not very excited to try an experimental vaccine. They know how important resilience is and how important it is to just get on with the job. Of course, it has all taken its toll on them and many of his clients. And he does not believe it is done yet. There is a lot of emotional stuff playing out and he is very conscious of the role he is playing in his client’s care.
We have a discussion around why politics and health care are mixed. Adam believes there is so much confusion and that politicians are punching outside of their jurisdiction. Whilst they may have experience in certain areas of health with certain people in positions there is so much confusion state to state and country to country. If everyone was working together it would be clearer and if everyone was open minded it might be easier. But Adam also understands how difficult it must be too.
Persuading someone who does not see health as a priority is not easy perhaps until they realise, they are losing the one thing they had. Those who do not prioritise it will be forced to prioritise it at some point. He believes it is key to lead by example and does not buy into the aging discussion.
His definition of Self Love is comparing the difference between self-love and selfish. One end of the spectrum is in selfish and the other is selfless and self-love sits somewhere in between the two. Being selfless is doing something or pursuing something for self or others at the expense of yourself and then selfish is doing something or pursuing something for self or others at the expense of others. Then that means self-love is somewhere in between and that would be doing or pursuing something for the love of yourself and not at the expense of others.
To honour yourself, to respect yourself and to take responsibility of yourself and recognising that you deserve to be well to be loved to be cherished. It is taking all necessary steps to at a minimum preserve your wellbeing but generally work on improving your wellbeing. Self-love collects many different selves including self-development, self-care, self-interest, self-reflection. If you are working on oneself for yourself and not at the expense of others, then that’s a demonstration of self-love.
We finish our conversation talking about a huge appreciation of wine and how it has created a true passion of curiosity. Something he advocates for all of us. Be curious, be kind and show enjoyment.
His favourite quote is: The way you do anything is a reflection on the way you do anything.

SLP 156: Self Love Quicky – Health Is Your Greatest Asset
Thursday Feb 24, 2022
Thursday Feb 24, 2022
If ever there was a year to truly challenge every facet of our being, every part of our lives and challenge it all on a global scale, then these past two years would win hands down. There is no doubt it has humbled us all and maybe for the first time as a community it has created space for honest reflection, a chance to look in the mirror and see what we can do better and how we can support one another to be more happy and healthy. Here are 8 ways to look after your most precious asset… your health.
Some would say this has been the worst few years of their lives, and you don’t have to go far to hear some of the hideous challenges so many have endured. Many say they let good routines change to their health’s detriment, they gained weight and let their health priorities go. Others would say it has been a remarkable year, a chance to re-set, regroup and rethink what truly matters. They got focused, created a home gym, lost weight even found a new love of cooking.
Whatever side of the fence, no matter how you choose to view it, life has changed for everyone these past few years, and it will continue to challenge us on all levels until our ‘new normal’ resides.
According to the Black Dog Institute many Australians have been impacted by fear, anxiety and panic about coronavirus (COVID-19). Common consequences include depression, anger, confusion and uncertainty, and financial stress, with estimates of between 25% to 33% of the community experiencing high levels of worry and anxiety. It’s understandable. No one really knows our immediate future.
But what we do know is continued worry and anxiety, bad habits and not focusing on our health is not sustainable. At some point our mind and body will say enough, and it is well documented that what we think and do can indeed affect the way we all live our lives.
So, what’s the answer? How do we rise through such uncertainty? What can we do individually and as a community?
I don’t have the magic pill or all the answers but I when I think logically and with common sense there seems to be a number of simple things we can do that can make a difference in our homes and therefore create a positive ripple effect into our community.
Perhaps we now have a once in a generation opportunity that we can be greater than the sum of our parts. And it starts with our health. Our energy, mental clarity and ability to get through all challenges are deeply rooted in our daily healthy habits and rituals. Here are 8 tips from my heart to yours.
1. Shift your perception.
We may not feel it or indeed want to acknowledge it but here is an opportunity to look for the gifts. Every time you feel challenged, look for a new perspective and ask yourself, ‘What is a more useful thought or action I could take?’ It could be as simple as switching off the news and reading something uplifting or getting outdoors and focus on one beautiful thing you see, smell, hear or feel. Be grateful for what is, not what isn’t.
2. Micro-Moments Of Mindfulness
The powerful effects of meditation are renowned but for many making time to sit and meditate for hours on end is impossible. Instead get really present and mindful of the moment you are in. If chopping up vegetables for dinner be mindful of the farmer who grew them and the nourishment they provide. Many daily micro-moments are as effective as a longer meditation session.
3. The Power Of Breath
Life is busy, there are many distractions to steer us away from focusing on our health and push us into fight or flight (stress) mode. Taking long deep breaths regularly stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system and enhances your ability to rest and digest (relax). Add the potent healing qualities of essential oils and you enhance the power of breath tenfold.
4. Move Your Body
Let’s be honest where we live is one of the most magical places on the planet. Look around you. Notice what you can do. Swim, jog, dance, gym, yoga, pilates, whatever you choose, just do it. No more excuses. If the only thing you commit to is to walk for 10-30 minutes a day and drink in your amazing surroundings, then you are a master mover.
5. Take inventory
What you place into and onto your body effects your health. Choose real whole foods as close to nature as possible and drop packaged foods. Buy from your local farmers markets. Place natural products on your skin, there are so many amazing local natural brands. Notice what you are purchasing and avoid foods and skincare with questionable ingredients and additives.
6. Buy Local
You’ve heard it already but every time you buy from a local business, that owner is doing the biggest happy dance. Buying products that serve your health is the greatest gift. And it is a beautiful way to boost the state of health for all business owners who have done everything that can to ride the past few years.
7. Be Gentle
We may not be able to change what is happening on this planet right now, or do anything about the decisions governments make, but we can do the best we possibly can. You do not have to do everything all at once to be the healthiest version of you, do what you can, improve each day and be gentle on yourself.
8. Be Kind
And finally, if you are still not sure what to do to get through this challenging time, if you do not know who to be or what you can offer, then focus on being the healthiest happiest version of you. Serve others. Offer a helping hand where you can. And most of all take care and be kind.

SLP 155: Why Questioning Is Really Important with Alexx Stuart
Tuesday Feb 22, 2022
Tuesday Feb 22, 2022
‘I am very much a grey area thinker, I don’t fall into absolutes, I never have. Because absolutes never lead us to progress, never, ever. So, while questioning is really important, I fully condone questioning when something doesn’t seem right, unfortunately a lot of political forces take hold of people who are either vulnerable or questioning and get their single issue interest into multiple other issues, where they would otherwise normally thought the exact opposite, simply because they’ve questioned one issue, they then get preyed upon to throw everything into question. I’m seeing people actually question climate change who would never have questioned climate change before.’ Alexx Stuart
Alexx Stuart’s passions run wide and deep. She founded the online community and education hub Low Tox Life in 2010 and is responsible for birthing the low tox movement. In this podcast we dive into her knowledge around political science and the growing swell of numbers questioning everything that is going on in the world. Alexx believes there are so many grey areas. She does not fall into absolutes. Absolutes never lead us to progress. Questioning is really important when something doesn’t seem right.
With strong connection to her overseas family and traveling a lot in the first few years of her life, Alexx Stuart ended up calling Sydney home from the age of 6. She grew up with a love of language and communication. She majored in French at Uni and completed a Political Science degree in French also. She loves the romance languages of Italian and Spanish and especially loves trying to figure out ways to communicate for peaceful change, to help people to connect to each other and find overlaps in times of polarisation.
Her low tox life came about through an issue with tonsilitis 17 years ago. There were no resources and nothing to turn to. She was advised to quit gluten and in turn became that ‘special’ person with ‘special needs’ in a society that was not on trend with gluten free at all. She found it fascinating to be an outcast and believes you cannot know what that is like until you have been one. Perhaps many feel like that now, given the current world situation, but Alexx wants people to know you are not alone. An outcast will learn a lot and become stronger for it.
It was when she was pregnant, she went deeper into food learning what we put into and onto our bodies is critical and this led her realise that all choices affect not only the individual but the planet too. Here she was someone who had an amazing education, a university degree and yet did not know about the importance of the quality of food she put in her mouth or what she put on her skin, what was used in her home and how that effected herself and of course, the planet. She believes school and Uni do not prepare you for everyday life.
It is natural for Alexx to research and learn about the best places to go, what resources to use and then teach others what she has learned. It was mind blowing to her that things we are told are great for us, are absolutely not.
We dive into her knowledge around political science given today’s situation around the virus and choices and the growing swell of numbers questioning everything. Alexx believes there are so many grey areas. She does not fall into absolutes. Absolutes never lead us to progress. Questioning is really important when something doesn’t seem right.
Unfortunately, a lot of political forces take hold of people who are either vulnerable or questioning and get their single issue interest into multiple other issues where they would otherwise normally have thought the exact opposite. Simply because they have questioned one issue, they then get preyed upon to throw everything into question.
Alexx is seeing people actually question climate change who would never have questioned climate change before. So, it’s very interesting to her how we take single issues moments like the pandemic and the people questioning them and prey on them to manipulate ways that they feel about other things. This is the most concerning part about it all to her.
With her political science degree she says it takes years to realise what these moments are and how the infiltrations happen to really be able to stay big picture. She recommends people read and always read around all sides of everything. Never ever go down rabbit holes where all of a sudden everyone feels the same way. That is the most dangerous thing any human can do because that is where forces that we don’t even know about prey upon people to then influence massive polarisation. What happens then when we are completely polarised is everyone is outraged by everyone else.
There are huge amounts of people on both sides of the extreme and then a whole bunch of people in the middle saying can’t we all just get along?
One important point Alexx makes is that you cannot become an expert in this space without a significant amount of time. She is a huge fan of the people who can speak about things moderately and pick interesting aspects of all sides of an argument. One person who comes to mind is Dr Elisa Song https://healthykidshappykids.com/ an incredible paediatrician. She has towed the line of reason the entire way. And that sometimes is saying favourable things. But also, the incredible ability to keep us all on the straight and narrow, realising that there is merit in a few things that are happening but also questioning the extremity to which those things are applied.
When we know so much about viral health mitigation, yet we are not allowed to have a conversation around effective treatments other than the vaccination, it begs the question why? This does not advance science. But then again, the extreme of the science side and anyone who doesn’t believe the science is also completely ineffective just like the other side saying it is all about freedom.
Reading extensively and from many sides of an argument and following whoever is at the top of the field and look at how they are debating about each other as opposed to those of us who are not experts who are literally just taking the Chinese whispers at the bottom.
Alexx questions the banning and censorship and sees it is a travesty. The peace is going to be found when we realise there is a lot of pain everywhere and there’s a lot of fear driving the polarisation and there’s a lot of fear in the most polarised people… will I lose body autonomy? That is a huge fear people have. But will I lose my grandma is the same fear if those people don’t get vaccinated. It’s still fear.
If we are going to start trying to come from a place of LOVE how do we disband that fear, how do we get people talking to each other and starting to openly share concerns and Alexx believes that is focussing more on our overlaps than our differences.
When asked if there is a greater agenda at play around the elite, money or governments Alexx says she has been a huge fan of Bernie Sanders who has been championing the clean-up of the hyper billionaire which is a dangerous situation.
We start seeing that there is an unlimited amount of money that is being put into election campaigns is often undisclosed. We don’t even get to see where or how much. She believes whilst we can blame business, we actually have to blame the political system that allows business to infiltrate politics. This is where the convergence of blurred lines of truth becomes very, very murky.
We have situations like having deadly sunscreens available, where in the senate one locks down a bill that is supposed to make sunscreens safer, and the reason they did it is because they received $400,000 from a certain chemical lobby. That should not be allowed. So, we keep blaming all these people who have nothing to do in the end with a system that originates the problem.
It is a huge mis-step in our quest for true democracy in the seventies and eighties and the flow on effect has meant people are allowed to get bigger and bigger and bigger and amass more and more wealth, untaxed at a just amount.
The idea that someone like Alexx (like us) can be paying more tax than Jeff Bezos is absolutely ridiculous. So, we have a system that unfortunately that allows to create this big elite narrative, to create the idea that these people are actually in more control than governments are now. So, unless we get the money out of government, out of election campaigns it is going to be very hard for us to start seeing more corruption task forces, more taxing of hyper wealth and less of an ability for companies to just keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger to the point where they’re more powerful than a country’s appointed leadership.
When we talk about money, Alexx believes it comes back to values, if you have the right values and are held to those values in your early life then she does not think money is dirty or bad. She has heard many negative things around people with money and coupled with her catholic schooling has led her to grow up feeling guilty and needing to do things for others even at the cost of her own good.
Alexx talks about how she believes we are heading back to an Aristocracy instead of a current Democracy. She would love to see a breaking up of hyper-wealth somehow. The best way to find out the where the root of the problem is, is to keep asking WHY until you get to something. She keeps coming back to rulings like Citizens United where you have a proliferation of money flowing through official governments hands and it needs to be stamped out.
She talks about tax and the importance of those who have pioneered even being taxed 20%. If governments run out of money for social issues it causes unrest. Unrest creates desperate people and people vulnerable to any issue into the preying hands of someone who might lead them down the wrong path. Desperate people do desperate things, not happy loved people who are safe and secure. We have a big challenge to clean up politics.
Alexx suggests questioning and reading books and I include her incredible list below.
We then have a big open conversation with Alexx around health and wellness and her challenges, particularly around mould. We talk how the pendulum can swing, not only in politics but, in health and people can go from one extreme to the other.
When you have an extreme event, it can push you to another extreme. Alexx was not exempt from this and found it to be ostracising and bad for her mental health to be so militant in all she did. It is important to have a mental health journey alongside a health one. She calls it getting back in the middle. She says she does what she can do most of the time so she can go with the flow some of the time!
Mould is a far worse problem for some than others. If you have issues of being tired, brain fog, carrying extra tummy weight, a leaking tear duct then it could all be causing adrenal fatigue, gut imbalance, lack of muscle tone and compromised metabolism and immune systems, and this could all be stemming from a mould issue. It can be an horrific inflammation cascade.
Alexx spent over $20,000 trying to work out what was wrong with her. Thanks to a chiropractor who helped her to discover the root cause of her health issues. And her story is incredible. If you have any of these symptoms or know someone who does then make sure you share this podcast and Alexx’s incredible journey.
Her definition of Self Love is knowing that in the worst times you can have skin to skin contact, cuddles and to know everything will be ok. Love and a ‘can-do’ spirit can support you to get through challenges. She believes that time in nature can be a beautiful way to love oneself, even if you live in a city.
Tennis has also been a wonderful way to help Alexx heal. It is like a metaphor in life as she says you are out there on your own and it is up to you to get in the arena and fight it for yourself. We talk about our mutual love of essential oils and how they are such an important and accessible tool as part of healing and living life to the full particularly with our olfactory and allegory senses.
We talk about her brand new book Low Tox Life – FOOD which is a must have in every home. Consumers are more confused than ever nowadays. Food has been over productised. We have dietary associations funded by big food conglomerate companies which comes back to money and politics which is not right.
We have such a broken and over politicised system such an unjust system especially for our animals to then be able to create a message of unity whether it is vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, keto, omnivore, carnivore, anything where we talk about more around our overlaps than our differences. Alexx says biodiversity is king! And to remember to connect to our power and lean into our responsibility this is to help us to remember our commonality and community.
Every little thing we do makes a difference. And she suggests that we meet together more in the grey and the overlaps.
Alexx Stuart’s passions run wide and deep. She founded the online community and education hub Low Tox Life in 2010 and is responsible for birthing the low tox movement with the phrase low tox that has resonated with people around the world. Her international bestselling book Low Tox Life and podcast by the same name have supported millions in achieving their personal, home and planet health goals. She is a sought-after speaker and consultant to organisations committing to change for good, whether it’s a focus on people’s health or the planet’s.
Alexx’s Book Recommendations:
Kim, voila: wanted to really think about some faves over the past couple of years. Being well read is one of our best defences in times of polarization, I think.
Suggested reading to understand how we got to the polarised place we are today and how there is so much corruption and a non-industry influenced politician is so hard to find, regardless of party these days.
For anyone who leads or wants to lead people today: https://www.booktopia.com.au/when-the-center-does-not-hold-david-r-brubaker/book/9781506453057.html
And if you want more on overcoming toxic polarization this was great https://www.booktopia.com.au/the-way-out-peter-t-coleman/book/9780231197403.html and while they talk about America, we are 10 years behind them, give or take, in terms of our own polarity issues so it’s very relevant.
This is a must read https://malwarwickonbooks.com/citizens-united/ by law professor Zephyr Teachout. It’s dangerous territory and timing to become a single issue voter, because if we focused on candidates that were truly independent and without substantial gains to be made by being elected (ie NOT Clive Palmer grabbing onto people against mandates so he can swing votes and continue to profit in the billions from mining). We need true independents more than ever, not funded by industry – historically far more likely to listen to constituent concerns and counter narratives that hold weight.
Another one I loved https://www.booktopia.com.au/goliath-matt-stoller/book/9781501182891.html?source=pla&gclid=CjwKCAiA6seQBhAfEiwAvPqu17T4TA7ify9RNzZcXDsNgVUZJ1tGEEvAj0ga7b1yMzigR6sJumImKhoCFpAQAvD_BwE
And this one just out this month – fantastic for an overview of the history and development of democracy. https://www.booktopia.com.au/the-shortest-history-of-democracy-john-keane/book/9781760642563.html
Very good and not too long, considering the promise and failings of democracy’s ideals https://www.booktopia.com.au/democracy-and-its-crisis-a-c-grayling/book/9781786074065.html
Why We’re Polarised. Great book https://www.booktopia.com.au/why-we-re-polarized-ezra-klein/book/9781788166799.html
Industrial Strength denial – what industry gets away – I interviewed the author and her book is great. Book https://www.booktopia.com.au/industrial-strength-denial-barbara-freese/book/9780520296282.html and podcast link: https://www.lowtoxlife.com/show-198-barbara-reese-industrial-strength-denial-how-corporate-denial-is-public-and-environmental-health-enemy-no-1/
Sick Money focuses specifically on the pharmaceutical Industry. Very important read https://www.booktopia.com.au/sick-money-billy-kenber/book/9781838850265.html
You can’t go past Yuval Noah Harari 21 lessons for the 21st Century.
And also very important book out last year on global elites and why voting for independents focused on reform when it comes to mega corporations, military industrial complex, and private individuals amassing unchecked wealth almost always vastly under taxed – https://www.booktopia.com.au/winners-take-all-anand-giridharadas/book/9780141990910.html
Slanted – A book on censorship and the fall of good journalism – Lots to think about here and key is to continue to seek out high quality long form investigative journalism https://www.booktopia.com.au/slanted-sharyl-attkisson/book/9780062974693.html
I found Obama’s autobiography, albeit it super long, very interesting as the first presidency navigating hyper-polarization from his personal perspective and looking under the hood at trying to run a government where both parties now disagree to disagree and progress seems at times impossible.
Really enjoyed this one on Paul Keating’s prime ministership – the good, the visionary and the unfortunate things born from it. Very objective and reminds you that if we vote right, we can in fact have smart leaders once again. https://www.booktopia.com.au/recollections-of-a-bleeding-heart-10th-anniversary-edition-don-watson/book/9781742751993.html
Voila – A few I’ve read the past few years that help people jump into the far more complicated domain of grey area thinking, polarisation, the problem with unchecked industry and individual wealth amassment and generally to at least become a thinker who always wonders: That’s an interesting perspective, let me see what other perspectives are out there and let me see if I can find experts debating each other instead of one side of an argument putting forward their view, whatever the issue.
It’s tough out there right now. I believe in a world where we can have differences, question authority and band together to demand a better democratic system free from the entanglement of vested interests left, right and centre.
You can get a copy of Alexx’s latest book through Booktopia right here: https://www.booktopia.com.au/low-tox-life-food-alexx-stuart/book/9781760525798.html?source=pla&gclid=Cj0KCQiAjc2QBhDgARIsAMc3SqTcelUS70PDWtAAKW5zP8h9tuAFo6yNgxUESZJjz4GVf4GY9R8Bx28aAsT-EALw_wcB
Her favourite quote is from Henry Ford:
If you think you can or think you can’t – you are right.

SLP 154: Self Love Quicky – Jasmine Essential Oil
Thursday Feb 17, 2022
Thursday Feb 17, 2022
The intense, rich, warm, floral scent of Jasminum officinale can be quite intoxicating and alluring. Jasmine, which is extracted from the exquisite white star-shaped flower, is one of the best essential oils to support the nervous and reproductive systems. With mild analgesic and anti-inflammatory qualities it is excellent to use in a massage blend to help alleviate muscle aches and pains and in skincare it is revered as an anti-aging oil, one of the best to treat irritated or dry skin.
Jasmine’s fragrant flowers have been used throughout history for personal adornment and in various religious ceremonies. It is known as the ‘Queen of the night’ because its’ scent is stronger when there is no daylight and particularly strong as a new dawn rises.
In China the flower symbolizes the sweetness of women whilst in India it represents divine hope.
It is commonly thought as the number one oil to ‘warm the womb’ and help during the birthing process. Massaged into the abdomen and lower back can help relieve pain and strengthen contractions. Used in a spritzer with oils like grapefruit and sandalwood can also help a mother to relax and maintain calm thoughts.
This is a powerful uterine tonic and has been used throughout time to help treat hepatitis and abdominal pain due to dysentery.
With its’ beautiful uplifting qualities jasmine is powerfully indicated for all emotional conditions. It helps to dispel fears and insecurities, it is supportive in boosting self-confidence and is an excellent choice to help ward off pessimism, especially with oils like Melissa, basil and ylang ylang.
Jasmine is particularly helpful for those who not only have been affected by depression but also those feeling despondent and lacking in energy as well. It’s uplifting and energizing qualities make it perfect in a bath with oils like rosemary and bergamot.
When inhibition and lack of self-worth is present you could add frankincense, lavender and orange to a diffuser and enjoy its harmonizing and boosting effects.
When it comes to self-love there is no better combination than jasmine, rose and neroli. These three highly revered oils have a vibrational energy and powerful synergistic effect like no other. Whilst they may have a high price tag only a very small amount is required for desired results.
There is nothing quite like the intoxicating effects of this precious oil when it comes to love-making and a feeling of optimism.

SLP 153: Finding Peace In Nature with Gosia Kuszewski
Tuesday Feb 15, 2022
Tuesday Feb 15, 2022
“What’s happening right now is very difficult, but again I find my peace within and also within my beautiful forest, which I’ve got next to my house. I walk in my forest every single day with my dog Shanti and that’s where I feel at peace. So it’s similar actually I was thinking about it the other day, it reminds me when I was younger I was doing the same thing, finding peace in nature. And now I am doing the same thing. I’m trying not to get trapped in the current situation and be angry about it because it is what it is, I don’t like it. But I definitely find peace in nature.” Gosia Kuszewski
Born and raised in Poland Gosia Kuszewski arrived in Australia at 19years of age and decided she loved it so much she was not returning. Growing up in Poland, her family was poor, but she fondly remembers her life was also really simple. Everyone cooked together and from scratch, there were no fast-food outlets or big distractions. And even though it was very grey and very cold and windy, she always felt free and unstoppable especially when she was in nature.
As you can imagine freedom means everything to Gosia and she admits she has always had a hard time with any restrictions or being told what to do. When she decides to do something, she just goes for it. She actually believes she was born this way. She has always questioned and challenged everything. She knew she had an inner strength and was always interested in looking at different perspectives. She loves to research and look at second opinions, she appreciates a different point of view and to always see another side.
No matter how strict Gosia’s parents were, she always wanted the opposite of what they insisted on so on the question of nature vs nurture Gosia firmly believes she was simply born this way!
Straight up we discuss then how today’s world, and all the mandates, rules and restrictions are affecting her. She admits it is very difficult, but it is what it is right now. This is why she loves to be in the forest right next to her home and take her wee dog Shanti for long walks. She says it’s the same as when she was a little girl throwing cherry pips from the top of a tree that she feels so free there, in nature.
Her love of natural therapies began when she had skin problems including acne as a young teen. She was prescribed antibiotics and her skin cleared. However, when she stopped the antibiotics, the acne came back. This created big problems for her gut. She researched all about herbs, digestion, herbs and how the body works in the library as she studied English. She was brought up using natural medicine, so this was not foreign to her.
She attained her degree at the Southern School Of Natural Therapies after 5 years of study. Her mission in life is to continue her destiny and with her love of researching and diving into information she is continuously trying to understand the problems at a deeper level.
She laughs and says her two children were her guinea pigs. She gave them herbs when there were problems, she treated them herself and did things that these days that could even be seen as old fashioned. She never panicked when they were sick. She trusted her innate knowledge and believed that the natural methods were what she needed to apply.
She fought constantly to not vaccinate her children, even though everyone around her were telling her she was crazy. But she stuck to her guns and feels very proud for those decisions today.
This leads us into discussing the topic of today’s dilemma around the Covid-19 vaccine. Gosia explains we all have very magnificent bodies with very good immune system if we take care of it. Our body is designed to fight diseases and the various pathogens and diseases. If we look after the body well, we know it is well-equipped to deal with most things it is faced with. Our immune system is very clever and capable, we have an innate intelligence and we need to trust that more.
She has also seen the other side of vaccines having dealt with many mothers of children that have been injured by them. But she insists everyone needs to make the best decisions for themselves.
She does have a hesitancy regarding the Covid vaccines and also appreciates how divided the world has become because of them. But she is adamant as a health care provider how important it is that she speaks her truth. Gosia has seen enough ill-effects of this vaccine in her clinic to suggest it is not the best thing right now even though doctors are completely denying the adverse affects, she is adamant they are happening. She feels taking this vaccine is basically Russian roulette. It is risky. Better still just know how smart your immune system is.
She is disappointed that main stream media and doctors are not talking about the natural immune boosters and how well-equipped our bodies are at fighting disease and viruses. Things like connecting with nature, taking Vit D, getting into the sun, boosting the body with zinc, Ivermectin or Hydroxychloroquine, which are known to help the covid virus.
She also understands many take the vaccine as they want it all to be over and to get back to how life was. But sadly, no matter how compliant, it does not seem to be how things are playing out right now.
If feeling challenged or worried she advises us to live in the moment and bring more peace in our heart as the most important thing as well as living with gratitude. Gosia has learned to appreciate things right to the core. Gratitude is what she believes can help us all through difficult situations like right now. Instead of seeing all the adversity she is constantly reminded of the things she is so grateful for. She says to always look for something positive, this is key. Gratitude can certainly help you to stay on top of things.
Gosia says the biggest contributors to dis-ease and not being at our best is due to the biggest problems of all and that is stress and anxiety. She uses medical cannabis with great effect to relieve anxiety, stress, lack of sleep, aches and pains, poor digestion, lowered immunity and is incredibly impressed with the results of this remarkable herb.
Her suggestion to reduce stress, anxiety and depression or fears about the future is to connect with nature. It is free to everyone and available to everyone at all times. We do not realise how potent being in nature is for the mind, body and soul.
Nature can make you feel calm and uplifted, it can make you smile she says. It is an amazing, beautiful environment that makes you feel good and feel like nothing is a problem. When feeling stressed or anxious this is the most important place to visit, maybe the beach, a forest, mountain, or use plants in the home if in the city, or watch amazing nature documentaries… and of course using your imagination listening to the sounds of nature. It is free, available, pleasurable and easy!
Back to medical cannabis and CBD oil, Gosia wants us to know it is incredibly potent and beneficial to calm our nerves with amazing properties that the human body responds so well to. It is exceptional for anxiety, cancer, inflammation, skin conditions even digestive issues, as you heal one thing you realise all things are connected. In Gosia’s humble opinion she believes it is the one product in all her 25 years that has had the most incredible impact in so many ways.
You can see why Gosia Kuszewski is a dynamic and in demand Naturopath who simply loves life and people. She is truly committed to her patients to achieve the best possible outcome.
Gosia has since assisted thousands of people to successfully heal from various health problems, including cancer and a variety of serious chronic diseases.
Her speciality is Live Blood Analysis and supporting healing on a cellular level which allows her to understand the underlying cause of health problems. She believes that without finding the underlying issue, we cannot truly heal, because we are only putting on band aid and treating the symptom, rather than the cause.
And she explains how Live Blood Analysis works and how much information she can ascertain with her clients from this approach. It is very visual and gives an instant snapshot into the present moment.
We talk about detoxification and the power of taking care of our amazing liver as well as honouring the lymphatic system. We need to take care of what we put in our mouth. There is no point taking herbs and supplements if we are eating the wrong foods including gluten and dairy, additives, sugar… She recommends live foods, vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds, small amounts of protein and fasting.
Gosia loves the infrared sauna and cold baths too as well as the power of drinking plenty of water, eating more alkaline foods and specialised herbs for greater health. Health is not just one thing and great health is also about relaxation, breathwork, water, nutrition, laughter, sunlight, feeling good and grounding.
Gosia’s business – Detoxhouse – specializes in detoxification as it’s an absolute priority in healing our bodies, and her special interest is helping people lose weight. She has a highly successful Fat Burning Program which guides people on their weight loss journey, quickly and easily.
Gosia loves nature, surrounding herself with positive inspiring people, spending time with her partner Armando, cooking yummy dishes and walking in a forest or the beach with her dog Shanti. She is a Mum of two grown up girls Maya and Emma who she deeply loves and adores. Above all Gosia loves helping her patients and seeing positive changes in their health.
Her definition of Self Love is taking care of yourself on every level, physical, mental health, spirituality, looking after yourself well. And it is about accepting yourself with all your flaws. Surround yourself with beautiful inspiring people that helps to create a safe and beautiful and loving environment. Expand the self-love to others like your children, partner, clients, family. Share that love all around you and being in service to others.
Her final message is around the quote life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. It is up to us in how we see the world and how we react to the world right here right now.
Her favourite quote is: Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.

SLP 152: Self Love Quicky – What You Don’t Know You Don’t Know
Thursday Feb 10, 2022
Thursday Feb 10, 2022
There’s a simple concept called The Knowledge Pie. You probably already understand that you know what you know and you know that within what you know there is even more to know. And you also probably also appreciate that there is a whole lot that you know you don’t know that maybe there’s parts you’d even like to get to know. This is fantastic to know… but it could also be one of our greatest limiting factors. After all there is a whole lot you don’t know that you don’t even know!
You see there’s another piece of the knowledge pie that many may not give enough consideration to. There is actually three parts to this knowledge pie!
This concept segments one’s personal knowledge into these three key areas; what we know, what we know that we don’t know. But the third and perhaps the most important piece of the pie is when we expand beyond that into a world of curiosity and that is understanding what we don’t know that we don’t even know. You might want to hear that again. How much do you really think you don’t know you don’t even know?
It’s a bit of a mind bender really because if you did know what you didn’t know then that would actually move to the second piece of the pie – what you know you don’t know.
Here’s an example to better explain: I am an aromatherapist and a business owner, I know how to do aromatherapy and provide amazing organic oils for my customer. I also know that I do not know how to do my end of year financial return the way my account does… or for that matter orthopaedic surgery or how to fly a rocket to the moon.
However, there is a whole lot of information about organic farming, or financial literacy or my mindset around these things that could indeed improve all that I do. And if I did it could help to streamline or perhaps even help make my business life less stressful and more successful. You see…
no-one knows what they don’t know.
Many people think this ‘cluelessness’ is a lack of experience thing that affects just young people… but EVERYONE, even experts, are completely unaware of what they don’t know that they don’t know.
Imagine the average pie for any person… yours could be gluten free lemon meringue or chicken and leek – it’s up to you. Now, cut your pie in half and cut one half in half again (creating two quarters). One quarter represents what you know, one quarter represents what you know you don’t know, and the half represents what you don’t even know that you don’t know.
So how can you learn about what you don’t know, even know that you don’t know?
Here’s a few tips on how you might be able grow your knowledge over this coming next year:
1. Enrol in that program you have always thought about doing.
2. Join a new network, for example your local business network or a national one because if you are in business these can be a wonderful way to learn and even grow your own business if you have one.
3. Do some volunteer work.
4. Get a mentor or coach – this could be for your own personal growth or it could be for your business. An Olympian or elite athlete would never entertain the thought of not having a coach, why do we think the same when we want to live a life of excellence without a life or business coach?
5. You could offer or learn to coach or mentor someone else!
6. Collaborate with someone that brings different skills and knowledge to the party.
7. Learn a new skill – it could be breath work, pottery, digital currency, or the ancient art of yoga or tai chi.
8. Visit a new place or town or something local you have not visited… you may not be travelling too much internationally but where you live right now may have many places you have not considered visiting – until now! Immerse yourself in it!
9. Subscribe to a new magazine, publication or podcast.
10. Read books of different subjects.
Growing your knowledge can grow your life, enhance relationships and expand your business. The fact is that for all of us there is much more that we don’t even know we don’t know than what we actually know. Breathe. It’s ok. It is important to know that we will be more successful in life and business if we remain open to new learning, and learning extensions and distinctions on what we already know.
Avoid having an ‘I know’ mentality about the things you do know about. Some people close their minds when hearing about a topic they have knowledge of. They may assume that they know it all. But we can always know more… and if we shut ourselves down to new learning, we could miss an important distinction that could make a big difference.
Just ASK! I love the acronym for ASK – Always Seek Knowledge!
And remember… as your knowledge increases your wonder and curiosity and potentiality deepens. Stay curious to learning there is so much you don’t know you don’t even know!

“Every experience in our life teaches us something. And whether it is positive or not positive or traumatic it teaches us something. If our lives were just like you know smooth and easy and happy and joyful, we would learn stuff for sure but it’s the crap in our life that we learn the most from. And is shows us who we are as people. And it really highlights emotional resilience and how we can step over the things and survive them and build something new.” Elle Crawford
This beautiful soul has an incredible story. Eleanor Crawford has had a long and twisting journey that really started at 17 years of age. The youngest of seven kids Elle’s idyllic life was sent on a completely different path when her parents separated. She did not know how to deal with the heartache of this or the heart break of her mum and felt so broken she literally ran away. One moment her dad was her hero and suddenly he wasn’t.
She ran to the country and aged 20 she married. She thought that was what you did when someone asked you! She had a son and then her second child Chloe was born when she was just 24years of age. Sadly, at 17mths of age Chloe was diagnosed with a liver tumour. This led to a huge amount of stress and worry, from countless medications to chemo to radiation treatments. Elle said the way her little girl managed this crisis was both inspiring and heart breaking.
Elle’s marriage was on the rocks at the time. But during Chloe’s care they decided to have another child. At 35 weeks pregnant Chloe had a life-saving liver transplant. And even though they played happy families for a while Elle decided to leave her marriage when her baby turned one.
At 28 Elle found herself a single mum with 3 children but she was happy, working and things were going well. That was until Chloe got seriously unwell again at 12 years of age where they were told she needed another liver transplant. After many years of ill health they also discovered she had terminal bowel cancer. Elle fought all authorities to get her girl home and won. She had Chloe home for 36 hours before she passed away.
Losing a child has certainly been the biggest event in her life and Elle knows other amazing parents who have lost a child knowing it is a completely unique journey for everyone. For Elle, it was the biggest emotional and personal development program she’d ever been through and throughout that time discovered she did not like herself very much at all.
Elle was presented with the book ‘Seat Of The Soul’ by Gary Zukav and found the greatest message she took from it was we are all spiritual beings having a physical experience. This took her on a journey of self-discovery and led her to Dr Wayne Dyer’s book ‘There’s A Spiritual Solution To Every Problem’. These were a couple of amazing leaders who supported her through hugely challenging and growing times.
She was left grieving the loss of her child but also relieved of the care of a chronically ill child. At 35 she realised she had never been young free and fun. Her therapist told her to get dating. In this process she met her second husband, thanks to being a facilitator for Bob Proctor (who coincidentally passed away the day we recorded this podcast).
She loved this man but found it wasn’t the relationship she was truly seeking. She knew their values were very different. What was special was that they had a child together who was born on the exact same day as her sweet Chloe. Elle felt Chloe was giving her an opportunity to have another child and it has become a beautiful day honouring her birthday twins.
Just before Elle turned 50 she met her third husband. She did not have the awareness of how broken she really was or if this was exactly what she wanted. She realised she was looking for something externally to fix her broken heart and has since learned how much this doesn’t work.
Elle explains how disempowered she felt before understanding her own boundaries. She knows this was all related to trauma from her past including many punctuated times of death and loss. Grief has been her side kick.
It wasn’t until she studied NLP and was really honest and transparent with herself that she realised how broken she truly was. Her inner world was simply a reflection of her external world and not the other way around.
Elle openly discusses how her role as a parent has evolved and shares how important it is for parents to be ‘in the work’ and acknowledge and express their emotions. Show your children it is actually ok to have emotions, she says. Talk about anything, know it is awesome to do this. She believes it is important to be open, honest and real.
Elle has learned there are always gifts in trauma as hard as it might be when you are in the throes of it. Every experience in our life teaches us something. It’s the crap in our lives that teaches us the most. It may not feel like that in the moment, but we do get the opportunity to live and experience and build emotional resilience. It is through life’s shit storms that there is a gift, you just have to look for it and it will come to you.
To get through these times, Elle believes you have to want to be a better version of yourself and to grow through what you go through. It is a deeper desire for more expansion. Your personal reality is a reflection of your personality. Your outer world is a reflection of your inner world. How we do one thing we do everything.
Awareness is key. You have to be aware of who you are as a person and be really honest. We are not Saints, and we are not perfect so be transparent and love yourself anyway. We are all doing the best we can with what we have and the resources we have. Life does not come with a handbook. It does take honesty and transparency. That is the hardest thing. Listen to your heart and intuition. Your conscious mind may send you in the wrong direction but your heart and intuition wont.
As a parent Elle believes it is imperative you remain open with your kids. And be human. Acknowledge your emotions and feelings. Your kids are way smarter than you give them credit for. They are on your side, on your team. Be honest.
It is hard to take advice from someone who has broken your heart. If you are more emotionally aware though you can listen in spite of that and things may turn out differently. It is important that when you communicate with someone you take a lot of self-responsibility and use ‘I’ language not ‘you’ language.
As a Coach many are hugely curious and have experienced a lot of hardship and challenge themselves. They have been in seek of the work. The amazing thing about clients that want to see or are led to see a Coach is that they themselves want to change and are seeking support to do so. It is about going gently. And dong it with empathy and compassion for yourself.
Rather than being at the mercy of your emotions realising you are the creator as the experiencer and observer. Every event is actually neutral, until we put meaning on it. Your emotions get tied to the event as you perceive it. This means you also have the power to get out of it. Dr Joe Dispenza calls it refractory emotion. If that emotion is suppressed you will get more experiences until you learn how to release it.
We rely solely on the unconscious mind until we reach 7 years of age when the critical faculty comes into play. They are simply ‘feeling beings’, big sponges. Whatever we are told, or experience gets stored and drives behaviours as we grow. So much conditioning from that time sets up our mindset, how we think about ourselves, other people, culture. If we are not taught how to express our emotions, they get stored… and then you may find you have a knee jerk reaction and wonder where the hell that came from? Our mind is 95% unconscious. Most people think the conscious mind is the boss but it is actually the other way round.
The Unconscious Mind is the control room of our whole life. And when you understand that you have a completely different viewpoint. Hypnosis helps you to release any long held repressed emotions.
The body is a vessel for our emotions too. If the body is out of balance because the emotions are out of balance the body has to communicate it to us somehow. It will show up as pain, disease, whispers. Stress is the biggest cause of ill health and is related to a litany of dis-ease.
In an understanding of the whole… Elle says I am you and you are I. We all come from the same source.
Elle has a beautiful community called the Diva’s International Club. When women get together in a community with a similar thread of experience and they see other women who have experienced and ‘sur-thrived’, it gives hope and inspiration to do the same for themselves. It is for women who have been through heartbreak, separation, grief and divorce. It allows you to show up and get rid of comparison and allow growth and achievement.
Her definition of Self Love is seeing it as the umbrella of a number of things including self-care, compassion, acceptance and boundaries. It is about allowing yourself to love those whose values align. It is about looking after yourself, not just your physicality, it is the essence of yourself. Accepting what you can. Change it if you want. Or accept and love all of you in the best way you can. She believes the key is nourishing your body, drinking water, rest, sleep, sunshine and nature.
Elle’s final message is that we need to understand it is a perfectly ordered world. However it happens, is perfect for the now. Happiness thrives from happiness. Be present. Be in the now. Don’t get hooked into the emotions from the past. All the power and empowerment comes from the NOW. Right now is all that matters. Be present, give yourself time. Meditation is key to be in the now. Don’t be held back from the past. Everything happens in perfect order.
Her favourite quote is from Dr Joe Dispenza:
‘Gratitude is the ultimate state of receivership.’
