SLP 174: Self Love Quicky – Ginger Essential Oil
Thursday Apr 28, 2022
Thursday Apr 28, 2022
Ginger is a well-revered spice that has been used in food and medicine for many generations. It is often added to dishes not only for its exquisite flavour, but also in particular for its ability to aid digestion. Ginger is part of the same family as cardamom and turmeric, and the oil is extracted from the root of the plant. It has a warm, spicy, woody scent that is warming, relieving, recharging and stabilising.
Gingerol is one of the main components. This has amazing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, as well as antibacterial and antiseptic properties.
Ginger can be extracted in two ways. One is via steam distillation and the other is via CO2 extract. Interestingly, whilst both are ginger essential oil they look, smell and behave slightly differently.
CO2 extracted oils are gaining a lot of popularity now as they extract different chemical constituents that are not necessarily found in the steam distilled varieties, and do not use heat or a solvent.
Ginger that is CO2 extracted is a thicker more sticky liquid caused by a ketone molecule called Zingerone, which does not show up in steam-distilled ginger. It is still a warm, and pain-relieving oil with the added bonus of being an exceptional digestive aid. It also has a more accepted and familiar aroma.
The steam distilled ginger has more known sesquiterpenes (B-phellandrene and zingiberene) which are brilliant for pain relief. Both are amazing but if you wanted an essential oil for digestion issues like food poisoning, dysentery or gut dysbiosis then the CO2 extract would be the preferred choice.
Regardless of extraction, ginger on a whole is one of the best oils to help treat upset tummies and support better digestion. A massage blend with ginger, peppermint, fennel and grapefruit could be an ideal combination. These oils would also be ideal for nausea in a diffuser or aroma mist spritzer bottle. If travelling in a car you could use ginger and peppermint to help reduce symptoms of car-sickness.
When it comes to coughs, colds and removing a build up of mucous an inhalation would be ideal. Simply fill a sink or small bowl with warm to hot water, add 2 drops of ginger and 2 drops of peppermint. Place a towel over the head and inhale in through the nose and out through the mouth, then in through the mouth and out through the nose for at least a few minutes.
Zingibain is a component of ginger that has anti-inflammatory properties. This makes it an ideal choice for muscles aches and pains, arthritis and headaches.
Ginger is also renowned to help increase sexual desire. With aphrodisiac qualities it would blend well with oils like rose, jasmine, ylang ylang, orange and patchouli in a massage blend, romantic bath for two or a diffuser.
Over thousands of years there have been many healing tonics created using the power of ginger and still today it is used as a powerful stress and anxiety support. If there was a special oil to add to your health and healing collection, ginger would be it.
Ginger is warming, relieving, recharging and stabilising. It helps to feel more clarity, cleansed, confident, caourageous, endurance, motivation, sensuality, strength and transitioning.
Ginger’s message to you:
‘I have the strength to do anything I set out to do with loving intention.’

‘Bernard Salt refers to us as the entrepreneurial capital of Australia and I completely concur with that. I think it’s two-fold. I think it’s happened partly because we haven’t had a choice. So, whilst in the past we were very heavily focused on tourism , people wanting a change in lifestyle perhaps, but had tech skills or had other skills in other areas, have relocated here, haven’t been able to find the kind of roles that they wanted without going back down to Brisbane, for arguments sake. So, they’ve created their own opportunity, they’ve said, ‘I’m going to hang out my shingle and I’m going to do what I do best’ and make a go of it.’ Jennifer Swaine
Bought up in Country NSW Jennifer Swaine is one of five children but losing her younger sister at 17 years of age, it became very apparent the whole family appreciated their community more than anything. This strong sense of community gave Jen a very strong understanding early on in life of the impact people can have on and for each other.
Bold and brave at 18 years of age she rocked on into see the CEO of a major Life Insurance company not realising you just don’t do that kind of thing, but somehow timed it beautifully and had a job by lunchtime! Over seventeen years she built up a career in Sydney around financial services in marketing and PR.
Kissing a few toads along the way Jen finally met the love of her life and married Steve and had her two gorgeous children. She then took a new direction studying interior design. In 2010 they moved to the Sunshine Coast. She loves to challenge the norm but does not consider herself a rebel rouser!
When asked what is the difference between Sydney and the Sunny Coast? Jen believes forming genuine relationships and a great community are crucial and so important. This can take time and patience, but it is imperative. It is unique and special on the Coast, and she is always looking for collaborative opportunities for the people she loves and respects. It is not as ruthless here on the Coast, there is amazing respect and room for everyone.
Jen also believes not everyone is a fit. As we get older, we get more comfortable in our own skin and can choose who we want to work with.
Jen shares what she believes, ‘You know, I think the Coast is special. And you know what? I don’t think it, I know it. I know the Coast is special. I know there’s incredible businesses here. I know there is going to continue to be incredible businesses here. And we are only really now starting to get onto the world stage because there is so much more happening here, particularly in the lead up to the Olympics.’
There is no doubt the number of outstanding businesses here on the coast is phenomenal. So many people doing very special things. Bernard Salt, an Australian demographer and leading social commentators, writers and speakers refers to the Sunny Coast as the entrepreneurial capital of Australia. This can be because many who move here are attracted to the lifestyle and then the coast attracts many innovators and research and development ideas people.
Jennifer talks a lot about what it means to be an entrepreneur and the hard work it takes to be on the edge, to be successful. ‘Know what you do well and own what you do well. Don’t be all things to all people.’ Jen is passionate to see people succeed and to showcase them in all ways.
Jen explains, ‘You know what it takes Kim, it takes a lot of hard work. What people don’t see are the 4am starts and the 2am finishes. They don’t see the weekends that you are not spending with your family. And remember you are doing it by choice though, it’s your own passion and love so no one is making you do it. But if you want to do the right thing by your clients, and you want to deliver outstanding work and you want to give yourself an edge that perhaps somebody else doesn’t have, or in my instance, you have deadlines looming and you do a lot of writing, then that’s what you have to do.’
We talk about resilience and how important it is to handle the knock backs. It is having a lot of confidence and self-love knowing you will not please everyone and knowing that that’s ok. You are not going to float everybody’s boat and again that is ok.
Her definition of self-love would be to be able to say I am ok as I am and worthy as I am. She also says you need to be self-aware to acknowledge your mistakes if you make them or if you are in the wrong or staying in your lane.
Jen recommends getting involved in your local Chamber Alliance to support your business and to network and meet others. Business breakfasts help to keep you connected and in communication with other business-men and women.
We cannot deny the impact covid has had on our community particularly around tourism and hospitality. Coming out the other side Jen says many found different ways to do business. The positives that Australia had to learn was to get back in touch with our manufacturing abilities. The Sunny Coast is also growing in this area and includes clean manufacturing like the tech space as well.
In 2032 Brisbane will be hosting the Olympics which will also showcase the Sunshine Coast hugely. We will see huge improvements in public transport like fast and heavy rail. It is going to make a huge difference to the region.
We talk about the differences between the Gold Coast and Sunny Coast and how we are more known for our relaxed lifestyle and host a huge number of entrepreneurial hubs as well as incredible food and tourism businesses.
Jen explains her own amazing business Sunshine Coast Concierge Services and talks about the importance of your personal brand. It is important to walk the talk and have an alignment to your values and that you match your brand style. And we talk extensively about her amazing skills and business which you will see the links below.
This is a beautiful conversation that could indeed see the population of the Sunshine Coast grow thanks to Jen Swaine’s incredible passion for this region and how much she believes in the entrepreneurial spirit.
A bit more about Jennifer…
Jennifer is passionate and proud to call the Sunshine Coast home having relocated here from Sydney in 2010. As a non-executive director of Visit Sunshine Coast, Chair of the Sunshine Coast Business Awards and Vice President of the Sunshine Coast Chambers Alliance, Jennifer engages with the businesses that make up the fabric of this great region to facilitate connection and collaboration.
Jennifer has her own marketing and communications business and works with a variety of businesses assisting them with their PR, communications, branding and to increase their profile.
Jennifer has a regular business column in InNoosa and Hello Sunshine magazines and is a regular public speaker and emcee.
Her favourite quote is: You cannot reason with the unreasonable. Reasonable people will hear you and it is a two-way thing.

SLP 172: Self Love Quicky – 4-7-8 Breathwork
Thursday Apr 21, 2022
Thursday Apr 21, 2022
Breath is precious. It is our life force. The way we breathe can help us to feel calm and relaxed or energised and uplifted. Breathing has many benefits including lowering blood pressure, managing chronic pain, reducing feelings of despondency or depression, it can help control the heart rate and manage illness and injuries to name a few. And when we focus and do intentional ‘breath work’ we can regulate our breath, calm the monkey brain and become more aware and fully present.
There are many different breath work techniques and there is not really any right or wrong to do it. Our ancestors have used the breath as a way to energise, heal and moderate through the Vedas, Yoga masters, shamanic cultures, martial arts and spiritual practices.
One of my most favourite techniques is the 4-7-8 Pranayama breath work. This forces the mind and body to focus on regulating the breath rather than letting the chatter in the mind take over. Many describe it as a natural tranquilliser or anaesthetic.
To practice the 4-7-8 technique first get comfortable in an upright position or lying so you can relax. Prepare by resting your tongue into the roof of your mouth inside the back of your top front teeth. Your tongue will not move the entire process and this may take a little practice.
Then you breathe in through the nose for 4 seconds.
Hold the breath for 7 seconds.
Then gently part the lips and breathe out through the mouth for 8 seconds.
You can repeat this for 10, 20 or my favourite is 30 rounds. It takes about 10minutes.
We are really only beginning to learn how breathing pace, duration and intensity can impact us mentally, emotionally, physically, psychologically and spiritually.
Breathwork can help us switch between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems as well as effectively awakening and activating the vagus nerve which is a bundle of nerves that connects nearly every element of our body from our brain all the way down to our spine. We pump more oxygen into this bundle of nerves which allows them to work in a more optimal way.
There are two main types of breath work – activation to help boost and energise and restoration to help calm and relax.

SLP 171: Fear And Fire In The Belly with Chloe Kingsford
Tuesday Apr 19, 2022
Tuesday Apr 19, 2022
‘I see that in women as well, like that little bit of fear but also that fire in their belly. When I see a woman dead lift 100kgs that had never thought that was possible… it changes them, it does something to them, and then all of a sudden, they start questioning well what else can I do in my life? They start questioning their relationships and their career, their boundaries and their values and everything else.’ Chloe Kingsford
Chloe Kingsford understands what people go through when it comes to mind and body and personal training. She puts herself in the hurt locker, the pain cave every day and knows the challenges we all face when it comes to getting fit and healthy. With a background in psychology she understands what it means to be fearful of change, but she also knows combining that fear with fire can mean extraordinary results… and it can all start in the gym.
In this interview we talk about the benefits of having a personal trainer, a PT. Chloe says it really is another whole level, it doesn’t compare and so many clients surprise themselves by having a cheerleader (a coach) in their corner. Having a program that is specific to you also really helps keep your body in check.
The ideal number of times to be doing strength training is at least three or four times a week. If you do this consistently, build your strength and include things like getting your steps up, eat well, lessen stress and get enough sleep then this will support sustainability and longevity.
Honour what you can do whether it is morning or evening training, the time of week you can train or fitting it in for everyone will certainly support sustainability and longevity.
It takes time to find the right gym and Chloe says it might be a case of gym hopping at the beginning to find out what type of gym suits you best. You just have to start. You only have one life and it is way too short to be unhappy with yourself, puffed, tired or any other symptoms you might be experiencing it is time to say yes to yourself.
Chloe shares life as a mum and business-woman and how not much changed when she fell pregnant with both children. She would listen to her body and honour what she was feeling in her body. Nutrition was a very big part of her pregnancies and then back in the gym within 6 weeks post-partum but it was about reminding herself she had time and to ease back into it, monitoring every step.
Chloe has written a book called ‘Living Awake’ based on hearing the self-talk that women had each day. She started to delve into all aspects of living well and the areas that women struggle with. After each chapter there are reflective questions to help the individual on their own journey. It is broken down into four parts.
Awake – The first part is about becoming more awake, to question more, get curious, look into the why you do what you do, what is in the products you use, how well you eat and drink, reflecting on oneself and question why negative self-talk and beliefs are there. Expand the expectation bubble and surrender to the process.
Expand – The second chapter is looking at how you can expand your world view by looking at the seven life areas including love and money. This is about how to be in the driver’s seat of your life and knowing how to ask for and receive help. Personal development is important and uncovering your unique qualities as well as how to set and create boundaries. Flexible routine is freedom.
Nourish – Chapter three is about nutrition as a form of self-care, movement as a non-negotiable, essential oils, journaling and yoga, the importance of sleep and lastly, she talks about the lunar and menstrual cycles.
Impact – The final chapter is about moving from the internal work you have done and then expand that out into the world. This chapter is about simplifying your life, ditching the chemicals, food waste, meat consumption, what is actually in our food, consumerism, living a life without plastic and then how to live a hopeful path forward.
Chloe believes if you continue doing what lights you up and do the things that make you feel alive this has a ripple effect.
As you let your own light shine you indirectly let others do the same.
We do get into the headspace of challenges and tragedies and how these can impact us all differently. But it still comes back to saying yes to yourself. What can I do today that will make me feel better? It can be as simple as running a bath with essential oils and journaling. Whenever there is challenge come back to the things that light you up. Check in on your micro habits and non-negotiables.
We talk about the children of this generation and how much the past few years have impacted their lives. She believes it is important to just be there for them, don’t sugar coat it, be real and make them know it is ok to experience a wide variety of experiences.
Chloe shares the joy of working with her hubby. Both are driven by the same things and they compliment one another. Chloe says her husband is more logical and Chloe is creative. She says it is important to not assume, to sync calendars, have shared passions and open communication.
Chloe said her life at Uni was amazing, but you do not need a degree to understand the psychology of being human. It is about being in the trenches, doing the work day in day out, having empathy and awareness, constantly checking in with each other and showing up.
Brene Brown says, ‘There is no intimacy without vulnerability.’
Chloe is a co-owner of a Strength based facility located on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, StrengthCity where she is a Strength Coach and Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach. Chloe is an author of the book Living Awake; which is about empowering women with the tools to become more self-aware so they can make informed choices about their health and wellbeing and in-turn, the health and wellbeing of the planet.
Above all, Chloe is a wife and a mum of two gorgeous children Koa and Letti!
After finishing her undergraduate in psychology and masters in public health, she went on a mission to strengthen the connection between mental health and physical health.
Building two gyms from the ground up, Chloe has impacted thousands of lives by inspiring, educating and empowering those (especially mums and dads) to live a healthy, strong and full life.
In particular, Chloe is passionate about facilitating women to find their true, courageous selves by breaking down the barriers they face with nutrition. She has journeyed along side women who have had physical transformations but has witnessed the struggles these women still face – comparison, fear of judgement, emotional blocks and limiting beliefs, disconnection and overwhelm and a complete lack of confidence. Not to mention the overwhelm associated with nutrition and the flow on effect this has in their lives.
Chloe is also passionate about living a low-chemical and low-waste life which she infuses into all her teachings.
Working on the premise of nutrition being the most basic form of self-care, as well as her near decade experience in the health and fitness industry, Chloe has facilitated thousands of transformations.
Her definition of Self Love is unconditional love for self and being at home with self. Know your values and know your boundaries.
To honour one-self Chloe feels that means things like:
Honouring your micro habits
Bathe every night
Move your body
Feed yourself well to fill the soul and body
Use essential oils every day
Slow down and breathe
Take moments of stillness and quietness
Journaling your life or pour your emotions out
Hugging your family
When asked what she wants most for her children she wants them to grow up and be so sure of themselves and be so in love with who they are that they can back themselves.
Her favourite quote is:
‘The risk to remain tight in a bud is more painful than the risk to blossom.’

SLP 170: Self Love Quicky – What Touches Your Skin Matters
Thursday Apr 14, 2022
Thursday Apr 14, 2022
We can be aware of all the messages about avoiding herbicides, pesticides and foods laden with other chemicals. We know how important the air we breathe can be when it comes to moulds and viruses. But what about what touches your skin? If you are looking for strong reasons why you should step up and change, or slowly exchange each product you have for better products, here’s 5 reasons why there is a conscious rising in awareness for the benefits of natural and organic:
Better for the environment – you might be told the chemicals included are only small amounts or you might be lead to believe they won’t affect you, but the numbers and accumulation effect of these synthetic chemicals (aluminium, lead, mineral oil, sulphates, parabens, phthalates, fragrance to name a few) can have dire consequences on our environment and eco systems.
Better for your health – the skin can absorb certain ingredients good and bad. Toxic chemicals like the ones mentioned above can have a direct effect on a number of the body’s processes. Many are known to cause different allergies, hormonal disruption, reproductive problems, eczema and even cancer.
Save our furry friends – it might be quite shocking to know that many of the big beauty brands do in fact test their products on animals, some countries won’t accept skincare products unless they have. Some of the testing practices are quite simply malicious and incredibly cruel.
Nutritious ingredients – there are many natural ingredients in skincare that are beneficial to your skin and wellbeing. Ingredients like jojoba and avocado oil, essential oils, shea butter, green clay and can be deeply nourishing, hydrating and nutritious for the skin.
Better choices – there is a lot of research suggesting harmful ingredients are absorbed into the skincare and create havoc on your health. There is also research suggesting these ingredients are completely safe. Is it worth the gamble or potential health risks? When you use natural you are creating better choices.

“And I feel like that’s very important. To be happy is to be able to look forward and say, alright now what? Now what is it I want to do in my life and how do I make that happen? Sometimes the adversity is the thing that actually gives you the gift of what it is that you want to create in your life.” Nicole Hannan
Volleyball defined Nicole Hannan (nee Sanderson) for sixteen years and along with a crazy upbringing she has used these parts of her life as wonderful foundations for who she is and what she is doing today in terms of her career, her medical research and as a mum.
Growing up in places like Borneo in the middle of the jungle, Jakarta, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands created amazing memories thanks to her father working in forestry. This meant in her formative years she had snakes and beetles as pets and got to swim with sharks and barracuda!
Eventually ending up back in Australia Nicole attended boarding school on the Gold Coast and in Perth. She found a love of volleyball when a teacher told her she would be a great player. The sacrifice and work ethic this sport gave her was second to none. If she was to time-line her life Nicole describes it like this…
– Boarding school at the age of 9 in Perth after her parents divorced
– Gold Coast age 10 to 14
– Boarding school in Perth for 2 years then back to the Gold Coast
– Year 11 second half in USA (Florida)
– Year 12 lived by herself on the GC as Mum lived in Thailand and Dad in Fiji
– Uni in LA on indoor volleyball scholarship for 4 years (Sports medicine degree)
– Moved back to Aus age 21 and started playing professionally on the beach.
– 2003 world champs bronze
– 2003 final world ranking 4th
– 2004 Athens Olympics 4th (even with some crazy injuries)
– Naturopath
– Master of medical research
– Current full time PhD and research on clinical trials
– Lecturing for a few years and clinical practice
– She has a daughter Charlie (12), and gorgeous husband Steve
– Now back coaching volleyball with Charlie playing for Qld!
Her daughter Charlie loves hearing stories of her childhood and has responded so well to all that Nicole can offer her from her own experiences.
Nicole believes her upbringing has made her more resilient and more versatile and taught her to find the best in every situation.
We get an insight into her life as an Olympian with some stories she has not shared publicly! Plus the disappointments of not making the 2000 Olympics through serious knee injuries.
Nicole believes it is ok to go through devastating situations with ‘woe is me’ feelings for a bit of time, and explains that the key to getting through such moments is managing your emotions. She believes it was only when she retired and then became a mum that she got more of a perspective on what she took so seriously.
Nicole admits she is still working on herself in regards to the need of validity in terms of results. Getting more titles or degrees or awards does not necessarily make you a better person.
The mental side and ability to handle emotions is apparent in her parenting. It is a balancing act. To be tough on yourself, to work hard, to know you can do more and give more is important without setting up a whole lot of self-worth issues. It is helpful to use the lessons on the court and translate them into life.
Attitude is hugely important, work ethic and striving to be the best is imperative to be at the top of her sport. But along with these skills, volleyball also gifted Nicole with friendships, travel and life experiences. These have all helped her in life as a Naturopath and Researcher.
Nicole shares how she got into doing the research she is now based on a medical condition her daughter had. It was important she created and found the evidence-based research to help patients with EOE (Eosinophilic esophagitis). She believes she would not have been able to help people as much as she has without her personal experiences, and this is what is driving her research for her PhD in complimentary medicine for people with EOE.
We talk a lot about medicine and complimentary medicine and the balance between the two and how do we make sure everyone has the quality of life they deserve.
Nicole says keeping it simple helps. Looking after yourself with a healthy lifestyle, good real food, movement, sleep, rest and sunshine. But the fundamentals are definitely lifestyle.
She has a degree in sports medicine and a master of medical research plus Naturopathy which supports her to have a wider perspective and appreciation for all sides.
Her definition of Self Love is about being able to sit back from yourself and be able to see you from a different perspective and to have empathy for yourself. Be ok with where you are at whatever that is. Be ok you are doing this thing to the best of your ability.
The self-love podcast listener are warrior kings and queens and Nicole’s final message to each of you is to always strive to be your best. Look at yourself and where you are at. Be kind to yourself and constantly keep looking forward. Make decisions based on what you want your life to look like. Work out the steps you need to take and then doing those things. The people who are most successful don’t sit around waiting for it to happen they take action to make it happen.
Her favourite quote is from: Our Greatest Fear — Marianne Williamson
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
— Marianne Williamson

SLP 168: Self Love Quicky – What Is NLP?
Thursday Apr 07, 2022
Thursday Apr 07, 2022
In this week’s Quicky the question, ‘What is NLP?’ is answered. Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) was created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in 1975. The techniques enable the individual to expand their own and others thinking. It is an incredibly powerful modality that also allows people to re-write the mind from negative self-talk and sabotaging patterns to positive highly successful empowered processes and outcomes. Through this kind of coaching, people can think, communicate and manage themselves, and others even more successfully.
Some wonderful presuppositions of NLP include:
The meaning of communication is the response you get.
The resources an individual needs in order to effect a change are already within them.
There is no failure, only feedback.
If you would like to know more about NLP and the amazing coaching experience you can check out the new website:

SLP 167: Everything Always Works Out with Dr Lucy Harvey
Tuesday Apr 05, 2022
Tuesday Apr 05, 2022
“It’s not that negative or things have bought me down haven’t happened, but when I come through the other side then I know that it happened for a reason. Maybe I didn’t get an opportunity cos there’s something else that’s going to come up for me. And I really am trusting in the Universe in that way I suppose, to sound a bit woo woo. But everything always works out for me and that’s even something that I say to myself, ‘Everything always works out for me.’ So even in a hard time or when I think something is not going my way, I know that it will in the bigger picture.” Lucy Harvey
Lucy Harvey grew up in a family of five kids who were all very active and lead a wonderful outdoor and sporting lifestyle. At aged 12 she fainted and fell which resulted in a fractured T8 vertebrae. After seeing many different therapists and specialists, it was seeing a chiropractor that changed her life and saw her become a chiropractor herself, thanks to the wisdom and care she received and a philosophy she fell in love with.
It was following this injury, which led to chronic headaches that she saw all sorts of doctors, physiotherapists and specialists to seek treatment. After months of seemingly going around in circles her parents took her to the local Chiropractor.
Lucy decided to become a Chiropractor after she experienced the benefits of Chiropractic care for herself. Lucy and her family were amazed by the explanation of how the spine, nerves and muscles can be related to other areas of the body, which explained her headaches. After a course of Chiropractic care not only had Lucy’s back pain and headaches improved, she also felt she was functioning better during daily activities. From that day onwards Lucy and her family have been receiving Chiropractic care – now from Lucy herself!
Lucy believes it is the people who prioritise their health, keep getting adjustments are the ones that seem to get through challenges the best. She recommends talking to as many people as possible when challenged and keep putting one foot in front of the other, no matter what.
The fundamentals for self-care and self-worth are taking time for yourself. Get outside, get a change of scenery, taking care, do things you love, get in the sun. Lucy did not believe the social distancing and isolation was the smartest thing to do. Everything is flipped on what we used to do like getting outdoors. She believes this is going to be a long term issue too.
Following two years of Covid and many lockdowns in Victoria, Lucy is concerned about children’s immune systems. She is also concerned with their development especially in wearing masks and how children are perceiving other humans as they grow. Lucy says the best time to get into chiropractic is birth and the second best time is now. It’s never too late.
We talked about practitioners believing in their clients and their ability to heal pain. Chiropractic is about looking at the whole body knowing that everything is connected, it is often not just one thing.
Lucy Harvey is the co-founder of Total Health Chiropractic. Over the past 3 and a half years, along with her husband Alex, they have opened 14 locations across QLD and Victoria offering Chiropractic care to the community. They have gone from being a team of two, to now having 24 Chiropractors in the team and even more reception staff. Lucy is proud of the way they have managed to grow the team so quickly while sticking to core values and creating an amazing culture at Total Health.
It has not a case of being lucky shares Lucy, it is more an opportunity meeting preparation. And these two are always open and ready. As you will hear in this interview it began with a big move from inner city Melbourne to central Queensland. Alex is the go getter and Lucy is more grounded but together they take action and believes in themselves wholeheartedly. They simply push and try as hard as they can!
Lucy describes the power of chiropractic care and how it protects the spinal-chord and brain. It is about honouring the nervous system. It is about prevention and wellness. If you have pain, stiffness, stress, disease or disruption it is usually a sign that the body needs support.
Lucy loves other modalities like acupuncture, essential oils, exercise, massage and is open to trying many different ones depending on her needs at the time. She recommends you be open and keep looking until you find the ones that suit you best.
One thing you will notice about Lucy is that she is positive, she is trusting in the Universe and believes everything always works out for her. She discusses the ‘vampire effect’ and how to protect yourself from those who always take from you too!
Lucy is also enjoying her most recent role as a mum to the beautiful Henley. 9 months ago, her life changed dramatically and for the better with his arrival. Lucy loves seeing him grow, learn to move and eat, meet new people and take in the world.
Her definition of Self Love is taking the time for yourself. Self-care is self-love. Taking the time and energy for yourself so that you can give more to others.
Her favourite quote is from Hans F Hanson:
‘It takes nothing to join the crowd, it takes everything to stand alone.’

SLP 166: Self Love Quicky – The Importance Of Loving YOU!
Thursday Mar 31, 2022
Thursday Mar 31, 2022
We hear it all the time – love yourself, look after yourself, be good to yourself, be positive – and we all know we should – but the truth is we find it much easier to dislike ourselves, beat ourselves up, knock ourselves and be negative! Why is that? Seriously what is this strange, degrading fallacy all about? It’s time to stop, take stock and love who we are and acknowledge no matter what we are all doing the best we can.
Whilst it is easy to find fault or feel like everything is too hard or that it is different for you, I truly believe there is actually only two choices that every one of us has. Love yourself or loathe yourself. There doesn’t seem to be much in between.
If you are not totally happy with where you are at right now then that’s ok, you have a choice to change that but guess what? If you really do want to change, you have to know you must act on it and do something about it. No point complaining about anything anymore, just get onto it and do what needs to be done. We all love to see how people transform their lives, we love before and after photos and we often dream it could be us. Well the time is now… It’s time to say I love myself and it’s my turn to make a difference!
From now on every step you take, every breath you take, every moment of every day is an opportunity to be grateful and to say I am worth it, I am beautiful, and I love myself to bits. It comes down to creating rituals that can anchor it in and make it a reality.
When you put good real healthy food in your mouth you are saying I love my body and I am worth it.
Every time you put gorgeous, natural, chemical-free products onto your skin you are saying how much you value your health.
A diffuser is the ultimate self-care ritual. Energy & Vitality is perfect to get you up and into your day, Instant Calm will help you retire at night and enhance a better sleep. Celebrate & Uplift would be perfect for those momentous occasions. Balance & Harmony when feeling out of kilt or emotional and Peace & Meditation for quieting the busy mind.
They are all valid feelings and they all matter. When you take the time to put on a diffuser you are saying I care for you – let’s anchor this positive feeling.
A Lavender and Peppermint footbath is such a treat at the end of a big day. A beautiful rejuvenating face mask says I am here for you and I want to make you shine brighter.
When you work out you are honoring your physicality and saying let’s get some feel-good endorphins into my amazing body. Walking barefoot is a fantastic way to feel more grounded and connected to nature. When you de-clutter your cupboards, drawers, wallet, handbag or office you are saying I respect you and our lives and minds feel more organized and open to new possibilities.
Saying grace, saying thankyou and writing in your gratitude journal are all ways to connect to something bigger and grander. And smiling is one of the most perfect ways to communicate to the world that you care, that you are giving it your best. Every single one of these rituals might seem small, maybe even insignificant on a big scale, but every one of them says I love me and I matter.
So no more excuses, no more if only, no more I don’t have enough time or money or living in the past. As of here, right now is a new beginning, a new chance and a new moment to say I care.
If you are still struggling on how to change your mindset, then how would you want your teenage son or daughter to love themselves? How would you want to hear your best friend talk about herself? Or your mum or dad? What would you like to hear them say about themselves? More importantly, how would you remind them of their goodness, strength and their beauty if they were running themselves down or not making an effort to care for themselves?
Well it’s time to turn that amazing advice on yourself and create your own special self-care rituals. And remember you are part of the ripple effect. Every positive thing you say and do has an effect on all of those around you. No more I am not good enough. This is the time to start a new trend, it’s time to say ‘Life is good, I am worth it and I love me to bits!’

SLP 165: Post Covid Recovery with Dr Nat Kringoudis
Tuesday Mar 29, 2022
Tuesday Mar 29, 2022
“I am really transparent, and I think talking about things really helps. So, I probably waited 5 or 6 days, and I was actually really sick by the way, we waited a few days and then came on and started talking about the fact we had Covid and what was happening. And people were not just blown away, so grateful to be able to watch somebody talk through the process of what they were experiencing. Because at this point in time, maybe we were one of 3,000 people in Australia, or at least in Victoria, that had Covid. So, you know talking about it, the messages were… I was inundated… thank you so much for making me feel better, I thought we were all going to die. And there was so much fear around it, where I’d always been of the opinion… guys let’s get as healthy as possible so that we can fair this as well as possible.” Dr Nat Kringoudis
It’s probably fair to say no one wants to get Covid. But if you have had Covid, or know someone who has had it or you are worried about it at last here is a no BS conversation that enlightens us on the effects Covid has on our immune system and most importantly what to do when you get it.
Dr Nat Kringoudis is passionate about women’s health. Using her research skills and desire to find answers you will hear this beautiful soul share her own experiences of having Covid, why long Covid exists and how to feel better and overcome all the fear associated to this virus.
This is a reminder as to how little we really know in regards to the virus, the recovery, what the vaccine was designed to do and the virus’s long term effects. So, here is an open hearted and fascinating conversation based on Nat’s own research around the evolutionary processing of disease and illness, after all viruses are not new. Nat shares how she has borrowed information from our history and other viruses.
What she has learned is about 30-40% of people with Covid will have long Covid. She has worked out ways to support our recovery especially with those lingering symptoms. She shares her own families experience of Covid and how we need to keep an open mind with all the theories out there. She appreciates there is a lot of divide, testing and judging, but if we can just remember we are all learning about the implications of this virus and to use history which always leaves clues.
Nat recommends understanding the long Covid symptoms like:
Respiration issues
Aches and pains
Fever
Skin issues including acne, eczema, dermatitis
Night Sweats
Low mood
Headaches
Insomnia
Hair loss
Reactivation of past problems
Gastro-intestinal issues
Fatigue
Brain fog
Chest and heart pain
There isn’t a symptom that may not be related to long Covid. There is a genetic factor but the four main issues of developing long Covid are:
Reactivation of previous condition
Antibodies
Viral RNA
Type 2 Diabetes
Profiling symptoms will help to work out the next step.
We also talk about the long-term effects on mental health and PTSD. We talk about the collective built up cellular memory and its impact on our society. Nat says nothing works alone and now we are playing catchup. She says to find strategies to get through this… know that it is ok, you are ok and you will get through this. It is important to work on the sub-conscious and approach our mental health with care and importance.
We discuss the effects on the ovaries and fertility which is fascinating and what this new vaccine is about. She does not believe it has been around long enough to say enough around the evidence that we will have antibodies as a result.
She says definitely based on her experience that those who were vaccinated seemed to have less symptoms and seemed to on some level not contract it as easily. She is not sure if that is coincidence but she does say this virus is definitely contagious. The best part is we have worked out how to recover.
This is an Immune Upgrade. It is like an amazing entire body reset. Nat discusses the reset, the entire body reset she experienced from Covid, and I share about the spiritual experience of this virus.
We discuss fertility, vaccine injuries and generational health. Her question is to see what has Covid done? What has it left you with? And what protocols will support you to recover well knowing it is an individual approach.
Her final message is to take a breath remind yourself it is safe to feel ok and safe to recover. Whatever has happened in past few years let it go. Say ‘I am ok, it’s all ok and I do not need to carry this anymore.’
If you would like to listen to Nat’s Masterclass on Mastering Your Post Covid Recovery here is the link for all of her research and fascinating information: https://atx1omtm.pages.infusionsoft.net/
Nat Kringoudis is a two times best-selling Author, two times podcast host and is all round women’s health and natural fertility practitioner. She founded Melbourne’s home of natural health her clinic, The Pagoda Tree where she has helped over 20,000 women rescue their hormones and reclaim their best life. You may even know her from her old online TV series Healthtalks…. or her latest book, Beautiful You.
Her favourite quote is from herself:
‘I am ok. It is all ok. And I do not carry this anymore’
Kim’s mantra every morning.
‘My body is remarkable. It aligns, it heals and it recovers with power and strength.’

SLP 164: Self Love Quicky – Natural Remedies For Coughs Colds and Flu’s
Thursday Mar 24, 2022
Thursday Mar 24, 2022
If you have been hit with a cough, cold, flu or even Covid you might be asking your immune system to step it up as you recover. The problem is if our immune system is a little rundown, or our reserves are low, then not only are these symptoms expected, but to heal fast can seem a little bit much to ask. So the key is to prepare and boost! Here are a few favourite tried and true remedies and foods that are a MUST in every home to boost your immune system as you heal.
Ginger – A must for winter as it warms the body, it is a powerful anti-inflammatory and it helps to strengthen our circulation system not to mention it is absolutely delicious! Fresh ginger root on hand for cooking is brilliant when added to meals like you would garlic. You can also pop a few fresh slices into some hot water with a little lemon and honey! And have a jar of crystallised ginger on hand to snack on as the perfect sweet treat.
Boost Your Vitamin C! Fruit and veges are the best way to load your body with Vitamin C. Fresh or frozen and dried berries are some of the best, blueberries, cranberries and goji berries to name a few. Also fruits like papaya, kiwifruit, oranges and lemons of course, and veges like steamed broccoli, and red peppers rate as the chart toppers. Chopped fresh parsley on every meal is also a winner!
Fresh herbs – Freshly picked herbs are powerhouses for phyto-nutrients and vitamins. Parsley helps purify the blood, Mint aids digestion and Basil strengthens immunity. You can get these easily from the supermarket or better still grow your own! Either way they are a must so get them into your food! Chives, oregano, marjoram, lemon balm, pick your favourite and enjoy the flavour burst they offer to your cooking! The key is to add them at the end of your cooking so you don’t destroy all their goodness through over heating.
Spice It Up – Just like herbs, spices offer amazing benefits to the body too. Cinnamon is anti-catarayl which means it breaks down mucus in the body. Cloves have an antiseptic effect and have been used for centuries to fight off disease. Turmeric strengthens the white blood cells, and is anti-inflammatory, perfect for any aging concerns too just quietly! Paprika and Chilli both warm the body, help the lymphatic system to cleanse and are also very anti-inflammatory.
Go Garlic! Nature’s natural antibiotic, add it to everything! A favourite for me is to squeeze the juice of one orange. Finely chop (not crush) a clove of garlic and add to the juice. Add 1 teaspoon Manuka Honey and a few sprays of Magnesium Oil, stir and scull!! In one swoop is best! This is the BEST slam dunker and is amazing if you feel a cold or flu coming on. Do a couple of times a day!
Immune Boost Aromatherapy Blend – This potent combination of Eucalyptus, Lavender, Tea Tree, Cedarwood and Pine is perfect for strengthening the body’s immune system to get you back on top fast and feeling great. These oils stimulate the immune system, decongest and oxygenate the lungs and cleanse the environment. Mix 6 drops into your 50ml spritzer bottle and spray around the home to cleanse and protect. And place 6-10 drops into your Diffuser. Add 3 drops into your body boost daily massage to strengthen the body! It’s amazing and smells divine! Go to www.twenty8.com and use your SLP discount code!
Magnesium Oil Health Spray – The miracle salt that not only calms the nervous system, stops aching muscles, helps you sleep, slows the aging process but it also can stop a sore throat in its tracks! In a little water add 3 sprays and gargle, repeat twice a day when the throat is sore and see the results!

SLP 163: The Best Comparison Is Our Self to Our Self with Cat Parkinson
Tuesday Mar 22, 2022
Tuesday Mar 22, 2022
Please Note: This interview includes conversation around alcohol abuse, depression, sexual trauma and domestic violence. If you need help or support in any way, please contact Lifeline on 131114.
“And that judging of ourselves, of not being enough compared to, you know I like to think that the only comparison that we can ever truly make is our self to our self. And letting go of that judgement of ‘I am not enough’ compared to that person or judging other people is really just a reflection on ourselves, our shadows the deepest parts of ourselves that just want to be loved. A lot of the time we judge ourselves for where we are not meeting up to the people’s expectations or our expectations of ourselves compared to someone else.” Cat Parkinson
Beautiful Cat Parkinson is a woman who has learned the power of self-enquiry and going within. Her whole life she has felt like she was on a mission to help people. Always wanting to help others she felt she was a magnet where people would share their deepest darkest secrets. She knows she feels deeply, she listens deeply and she always aspired to be the ‘good girl’. But this all came at a huge cost.
Cat is the owner and Director of Nine Lives Coaching specialising in helping people of all ages and genders to overcome addictions. This includes one of our modern days’ biggest dependencies, alcohol.
She uses a unique fusion of Hypnotherapy, NLP, Time-Line Therapy, Reiki, Embodiment tools and Access Consciousness to guide clients on a journey into the depths of their unconscious mind to understand why they sabotage and how to overcome when that seed was first planted.
Cat guides people to overcoming limiting beliefs, negative emotions and self-worth issues to create the life of their dreams as a happy, healthy individual who loves all parts of themselves.
Cat is 47, she is happily married and a mother of two amazing children. She has been on her own remarkable health journey healing herself from depression, an ‘incurable’ inflammatory bowel disease and the symptoms of menopause all with the power of the mind. Through doing the inner work, never giving up on herself -no matter how hard it got – and having professional guidance every step of the way, Cat is now living proof that anything is possible.
She has proudly overcome many of the challenges that could otherwise have ruined her life, including the trauma of sexual abuse and domestic violence and she has quit drinking and smoking.
Cat is now on a mission to help her clients overcome sabotaging beliefs and behaviours and heal their past with ease and grace. She has rebuilt her life and shows us that no matter what happens to you, nothing can take away the ability to believe in yourself and be your own best friend. Her passion is to help everyone create a magical life that is full of love, life and adventure.
In this week’s podcast Cat shares with us her story of growing up. Her dad left when she was 4 however, he had checked out way prior. She realises now how she put up an emotional barrier. She knew her mum loved them extra hard, but also appreciates through all the work she has done that you crave the parents love you can’t have the most.
She was always looking for someone else to love, for someone to fill that void. At 14 she lost herself in what she thought was freedom. It was a never-ending cycle of promiscuity and alcohol. She shares very openly about how that looked and how desperate she was yearning for love in perhaps all the ways that did anything but find it.
She shares all about the emotional and sexual traumas, the binge drinking which a huge part of the 90’s culture. There was so much confusion and pain and she just could not understand it so pushed that part of her down for a very long time. She believes that things like ovarian cancer can be emotionally linked. She had ovarian cysts at 19yrs of age and realised the pattern that unfolded was if she was sick she got the care she was yearning for from her mum. It was a way to get help without the guilt.
She got very thin and realised the gifts were no alcohol and no unsafe activities. She was also a people pleaser as she had learned she needed to be a good girl growing up for her mum. She had no idea who she was.
In her early 20’s her dad had a midlife crisis which we now call a mid-life awakening. Her dad then studied NLP learning under Tad James and did a session with Cat. She was blown away, it cured ALL her symptoms. Her body returned, she had more energy and more self-love.
As a police officer she fulfilled her love of helping, protecting and serving others. She was caught up in a shooting incident that forced her to get counselling. This is where she fist opened up about her dad, that she had always been chasing someone to fill that void of her father.
She learned to tune into and listen to her intuition and innate wisdom. She enjoyed the upward spiral and how to bring more healthy love in. She chose better friends, worked hard on what she truly wanted. She found meditation and found Hypnotherapy to be incredibly cool.
She met her hubby and decided this would be a different relationship. She behaved differently. He is the most respectful and loving gentleman. She realised the more she respected herself the more beautiful it felt to be loved.
She used hypnosis and guided meditations to awaken her heart. She learned to fall in love with getting high on herself not depending on alcohol, sex or drugs.
Cat explains more about her life as a police officer and why she was a domestic violence liaison officer. She loved protected and defending helpless victims. But this environment was not necessarily the right one for her as it also had a drinking culture and, in her words, there were plenty of police on tap!
As she grew more and more using the powers of hypnosis and NLP she also realised how much she wanted to learn how this amazing modality worked. The shadow work in particular was a huge a-ha particularly around her father. It strips away layers and expose your raw authentic self. She always felt she had magical hands and that there was something bigger, more spiritual for her and that she had a much bigger purpose. She felt she was a leader. A human translator.
She finally started to feel at home in her mind and body. And now she wants to help translate for others.
Cat appreciates the more you study the more you learn at a different level and it’s great to be a study junkie! She believes life is all about chaos and order and chaos and order. The work we do on ourselves affects everyone around us. Every single person is on their own unique journey.
NLP is all about language and how palatable it is whilst healing.
Time-Line Therapy takes you back in your life to heal.
Hypnosis is the true magic to shed layers and allow the mind, body and soul to truly heal.
Cat loves to be a coach helping people with addictions, in particular alcohol. She knows that as a coach you are always learning and healing yourself in the process. She believes you attract what you need in the moment. And she discovered she had a love of studying and learning. She has said yes to so many courses even though she thought alcohol had ruined her ability to learn.
She has tapped more and more into her spirituality and she now knows if she can do this work, the partying fun drunk girl she was, then anyone can do it. And through this process and niche was born. She works beyond the sobriety mask and implements the powers of understanding self and taking care of your heart in the process. She is a coach who loves to help people heal themselves particularly around shadow work and limiting beliefs.
Coaching is a journey and why so many of us are called to it. It is a constant healing journey and a coach can hold you as you grow and heal. It is about stepping into the uncomfortable all the time. It is a healing process of the soul and unconscious mind in a safe and loving way. The more work you do on self the more strength you gain. The more compassion and empathy evolves.
We discuss the powers in this style of coaching. This work is all about understanding the parts of us that have unmet needs. Understanding we are all one. That everyone is doing the best they can with the resources they have. Parents are acting out their own traumas. When we are at effect we are in blame and victim mode. When we are at cause we can learn more and we can love more.
Some of her self-love practices include:
– A bath with oils and candles
– Pilates
– Ceremonial cacao
– Some space and solitude
– Lotions and skincare
– Being in Nature
– Studying
– Reading
– Audio Books
Her definition of Self Love is: Doing whatever lights me up and whatever makes me feel at peace.
Her favourite quote is from Brene Brown:
In order for shame to thrive it needs three things:
– Secrecy
– Silence
– Judgement
Cat reminds us to tell our story, bring it to light, share ourselves, get support, get help and that it is ok to reach out. No one is ever alone.
